A word from Chestnut
Chestnut is an American restaurant. We are in a 1920s era building in downtown Asheville, right across for the Aloft hotel and the double decker coffee bus (Double D's Coffee and Desserts). Parking is plentiful (and cheap) at the public deck under the Aloft Hotel.

Diner Reviews
  • "What a great evening we had to celebrate my birthday, our waiter Bo was outstanding. Yes, we will be back! The food was wonderful."

  • "Wife and I went here for a short trip to Asheville. We chose Chestnut for their menu, our taste preferences are pretty simple (steak, chicken, fish). My wife had the lobster bisque, I had a salad and some homemade bread for appetizers. All appetizers were really good, the bisque was more than expected as was the bread basket. For dinner I had the NY Strip and my wife had the trout. Again good portion sizes and the scalloped potatoes (oh my!) I shared with my wife and had to fight for the last bite. For dessert we shared the dessert of the day (can't remember the name it was a fruit tart with homemade ice-cream) again really good!! The atmosphere wasn't as expected (looking for more cozy/romantic) but still nice. Would visit again."

  • "My wife and I had an excellent meal. Local draft beer selection is very good."

  • "I enjoyed their lobster bisque, nice blend of flavors and not too heavy; shared a trout, tender and tasty with interesting sides and glazing. Seasonal salad with crisp arugulla, pine nuts and asparagus, a dressing that was not too heavy and a very good parmesan crisp. Tiramisu creme brulee, light on coffee and chocolate flavors. It was even better the next day when I finished the leftovers. Service is friendly as ever and responsive to special requests such as gluten free food. I'll be back."

  • "I went to Chestnut hoping for a lively place to go with a group, but it's more of a quiet crowd. The menu is somewhat small, but the food was good. Nothing amazing, but everyone liked their meals. The bartender's drink special, a strawberry martini was excellent. The ambiance is a bit boring, but good for an early dinner with the kids, a weeknight meal or easy weekend meal. Not for a special occasion in my book."

  • "My wife and I ate on a Thursday evening, and it was one of the best dining experiences we have had. The server was attentive and responsive. He knew the menu and explained everything well. The food was superb! My wife had the Lobster Bisque appetizer and I cannot believe how good it tasted. Very good indeed. She also had the Chestnut Fish and Chips and it was delicious. I had Catfish with a wonderful asian slaw. We are definitely going back."

  • "Perhaps the best meal I have had in 8 years of living in Asheville and dining out 2-3 times a week."

  • "Food - creative menu, staff - so friendly and accommodating and service - timely and courteous. ALL 3 categories are excellent and it's not easy to get it all right at the same time. My new favorite place~~"

  • "I have been here many times. This had to be one of the best. The food was over the top and our wine choice was perfect fit to our meal. We had Sawyer as our waiter and he was just perfect. Hats off to Joe and the gang of Chestnuts. We also love the Corner Kitchen."

  • "Everything was enjoyable, although it is a little noisy."

  • "We had a great lunch experience at Chestnut. The food was outstanding, my wife and daughter had the Turkey Sliders (Special of the Day) and I had the Eggplant Parmigiana Sandwich. I also had the Mushroom soup which was amazing, best I’ve had. Staff was knowledgable and very attentive. The manager came around to see how we were doing. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and look forward to having dinner there soon."

  • "This bustling restaurant is from the same folks as beloved Corner Kitchen in Asheville's Biltmore Square. We'd heard good things from fellow foodies and now see why, after scoring a lucky last-minute reservation on OpenTable. We hate to mention specific dishes we enjoyed, because the menu changes daily, but highly-recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Overall, our meal was very good. However, there was some disappointment when the fish and chips arrived with actual chips instead of fries. My husband was looking for the traditional fries with his fish. They might rethink that. Also, bread pudding was ordered for dessert. It was very dry and just good at all. It seems like they did not allow the bread to soak up the liquid as in all bread pudding recipes. Having lived in New Orleans for many years, we know a good bread pudding when we have one -- this was not one of them. The restaurant is lovely, the wait staff is helpful, kind and courteous. We will go back and try something else on the menu."

  • "Service is good until you receive your entree and then the wait staff seems to disappear. You need to allow at least an hour after your meal is cleared if you want dessert or coffee. It takes a good 10 or 15 minutes to get a dessert menu and then another 15 minutes for them to come and take an order. The first time we dined there we had to skip dessert because it took so long to be waited on. This time we had extra time and the desserts were excellent!"

  • "One of our favorite places downtown came through again at Sunday Brunch. Friendly, helpful staff throughout. The fried chicken plate is enormous, tasty - well worth the calories! The chicken had been marinated in something so it was tender, juicy with a great crust. Amazing collard greens with molasses, creamy grits. A new take on a southern favorite. A small but nice touch: since winter seems not to be ending, it's nice when you go in a restaurant and they have a coat closet! Much more comfortable than sitting in a booth with a damp, bulky coat. More restaurants need this. Thanks, Chestnut"

  • "Our first visit, but certainly not the last. The lobster bisque is exquisite, and a must have. The PEI mussels were delicious, in a very tasty curry sauce. I would have preferred crusty bread for dipping instead of the Naan bread. The risotto cakes were fantastic. The wine list has many excellent by-the-glass selections. Wait staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "Dined here our first night in Asheville. I thought the food good, my husband found it middle of the road. If I could give it 3 1/2 stars I would because it is better than three, just not a four. You will find it enjoyable and tasty."

  • "Chestnut has been a wonderful addition to downtown! Food is very good and service is attentive. Empty plates are scurried away quickly and water glasses refilled without a wait. Love the ambience and decor.....very warm and inviting. The bar area is beautiful. Love Chestnut!"

  • "A group of 5 of us went here on a Saturday night before a show. We told the waiter what time we needed to be finished in order to make the show. He assured he would take care of us and he did. The service was great. The food was great. Four of us had the petite steak (3oz). They were all cooked very well and the sauce was excellent. We will definitely be back."

  • "I accidentally made a reservation for 2 when we were going to be 4 - on a Saturday night! Fortunately the hostess agreed to put us at a table that was booked for later, asking us to be sensitive to time. As it was we had 1:45 hrs for a very relaxing meal. Interestingly, when I told the other couple where we were going, they were thrilled. They had received a reference for Chestnut while traveling in the Amazon! What are the chances?"

  • "The luster on this gem has dulled some. In such a hot, crowded dining scene, it's now the server that chooses the restaurants. Everything was out of the sync the recent Friday evening we dined at Chestnut. None of our party left with the glow of that expected fine dining experience. The food was pretty much as usual though that may be part of the problem. The choices are serviceable but if you're from Asheville and a regular diner, you do crave heightened nuances and a change. There's only so many times that you can go back to that gorgeous lobster bisque. As in life, fluffing is a good thing."

  • "Chestnut easily accomodated our group of 7 - my daughter's college friend, her parents, and sister. Service from Sawyer was energetic and well-timed. We sat talking for almost 3 hours and never felt rushed. Calamari Kale Salad was a popular choice. The Risotto cakes with lobster ragout were also a favorite. We shared small plates and had plenty for everyone. The craft beer selection was good. Dessert choices were varied and all good. The waiter, Sawyer, comped two desserts for the birthdays in our group. Great night all the way around. We will be back very soon"

  • "Was visiting Asheville and happened on Chestnut for Sunday Brunch. Absolutely phenomenal meal for myself & 3 friends. I went with the special Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict which could not have been better. Would go back again and again."

  • "Across from the Aloft Hotel (GPS gives erroneous directions) the dish descriptions were good, but the food was better. Nice blend of flavors and textures in each dish. Menu changes daily. We were not in a rush and wanted to have a leisurely meal with many courses. This suited the speed and style of the restuarant. Pricing was very appropriate. All dishes were properly prepared. Patron at the adjoining table had a problem that was taken care of efficiently. Would definitely return."

  • "Easy going Sunday Brunch with good food, service and ambiance. Will try for dinner soon. Easy walking in downtown Asheville makes it close and convenient"

  • "Once again, a delicious dinner at Chestnut. I've had the trout dish twice and it was superb each time. The Kale Calamari salad remains another stalwart favorite if mine. Their beet salad is fresh and tasty with generous dollop of goat cheese. The kitchen was willing to substitute my sides without any fuss."
