Chestnut is an American restaurant. We are in a 1920s era building in downtown Asheville, right across for the Aloft hotel and the double decker coffee bus (Double D's Coffee and Desserts). Parking is plentiful (and cheap) at the public deck under the Aloft Hotel.

  • "Our server, Sawyer was terrific! what fun, accomodating service! I had the 1955 cocktail. a perfect Not to Sweet cosmo. Chestnuts offers small plates, which my husband and I love. Their small charcuterie plate was fab. The pork with pistachio terrine made me rethink all those "gooey " looking terrines in France. I'm hooked! My husband had a 3 oz.beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes that was scrumptious. I had 1/2 doz raw oysters. I dine on the coast al lot and these were as good as I've had anywhere. We'll be back!!!"

  • "Our first visit to Chestnut was a wonderful surprisingly great experience. My husband ordered the mussels on a medium plate with the bread basket starter for his entrée. Even as a smaller plate, it was a good sized portion for him. I ordered the stuffed chicken with mozzarella and prosciutto. This dish was paired with artichoke, asparagus sauce and the flavor combination was excellent. For dessert we shared a chocolate mousse and were equally pleased with it. We would definitely recommend this restaurant to others and will return again in the future. Service and atmosphere were also excellent."

  • "Excellent menu with great variety. The marinated salmon with sliced potato and cucumber salad in a light dressing was first class. It was matched by a crispy pork belly appetizer. The mussels were spicy and plump with naan bread to soak up the juices. Pan-fried trout with asparagus and greens was perfectly cooked. The offering of small but generous plates should be encouraged. All main course dishes were a perfect serving size and no request for alterations were questioned. The wine list is fairly priced with good selections of all the popular varietals. The service was excellent and knowledgable with owners visible in the dining room. There was a nice bar with hightop tables for more casual dining."

  • "We enjoyed every bite. The lobster bisque was so good, we were going to split one and the waitress suggested we each get a bowl. Glad she did, I didn't want to share it was so good! My husband had never eaten calimari thinking it would be chewy. It was perfectly done and crisp on top of a kale salad. Enjoyable dining experience."

  • "The homemade bread and mozzarella chicken with orzo was amazingly good!It was a little loud in our section but only because a large and boisterous table was next to us. Can't fault the restaurant for dinners being loud. They were just enjoying themselves, and how could they not?"

  • "I had made a reservation at this restaurant for breakfast, because the day before I had waited an hour and a half at another restaurant just to eat breakfast. Our two meals were absolutely delicious. We started with sharing a homemade doughnut which was outstanding. My mother order the chicken and waffles and I ordered the brisket hash. The waitress was extremely helpful in providing recommendations. Both meals were outstanding and we would return again."

  • "Went on a Saturday night but wasn't super busy. Took 20 minutes to get drinks and almost 30 minutes before bread (which was not free, just as an aside) arrived. Entrees arrived cool and needed to be sent back, though the flavors were truly lovely."

  • "We went to Chestnut on the basis of several recommendations from friends, for our anniversary dinner. The service was sub-par my $12 cocktails were whisked away when there was still a finger-worth of fluid in the glass. My husband's tea glass sat for nearly 10 minutes without a refill, this with server's assistants and others flitting about the place. The food was hit-or-miss. The mussels were divine, if a little overly-citrus infused. My dinner of stacked fried green tomatoes was fresh and acid-forward which paired well with the pimento cheese between layers of tomato. My husband's risotto was disappointing - the tomato sauce was reminiscent of Chef Boyardee while the risotto cakes were lacking the cheese the menu promised."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Chestnut. It was recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. We started with the beet salad and it was so balanced and surprisingly tasty. I was undecided on my main and our waiter recommended the creamy vegetarian farro ‘risotto’ with squash noodles and mixed mushrooms. I was hesitant at first, but when he said he was normally a carnivore and that was his favorite thing on their menu I just had to try it. It was delicious! I haven't had a vegetarian dish that good in a very long time. So rich and creamy and 'meaty' from the shrooms that I didn't miss out on anything. My boyfriend got the NC tilefish in a red curry sauce and although it was good, it didn't beat mine by a long shot."

  • "The lobster bisque was a great start. In my party we tried the petite filet, the crab cakes and the tile fish. All were wonderful. I exchanged a vegetable for my potatoes without an issue. For desert we had the soufflé. It was great! Sawyer our server was the best ever. Overall. Great restaurant. We plan to return during our next trip to the area."

  • "Chestnut is absolutely one of the finest restaurants in Asheville. The food is prepared with ingenuity and love, and the results are amazing. Of particular note: the lobster bisque is exquisite and not to be missed; they served a generous portion, but I ate mine as slowly as possible as to savor every mouthful. The other dish I would term amazing were the risotto cakes on lobster ragout; I had these on the recommendation of someone else, and I am delighted I followed their advice. I also had the fried calamari on kale salad; lovely touches were the oregano aioli and the fried lemon slices. We shared the breadbasket—a wonderful selection of homemade breads—and would advise ordering that."

  • "I love Chestnut's option for a 3 oz filet mignon and flexibility in leaving out the potatoes/increasing the vegetables to satisfy my dining needs. The filet was PERFECTLY cooked med rare. This along with a yummy cocktail--a manhattan made with Troy & Sons moonshine-- and dessert--lemon bar topped with ice cream--left me feeling quite satisfied and happy to have found this Asheville gem."

The lunch menu is diverse, original, and offers something for everyone from a standard burger to some really great interesting options. We all had something different to mix/match. Most prices were only $9 - $12 which included the entree and a side. I think the most expensive was $15. Price/value is terrific! Reservations not required, but the place got packed at the noon hour on a Friday!"

He had to check on us while he was moving quick and that meant we had to keep an eye out for him. I would recommend Chestnut but we have yet to find an outstanding Asheville restaurant."

  • "The decor is lovely, the noise not too bad, and good service, but have had inconsistencies that mar and excellent rating. Salmon was cooked unevenly. Did they let it come to temp before throwing it on the grill? Have had some other missteps there before, but the staff graciously apologized and offered desserts, etc. Last time I had lunch there, the diners next to us had some problems as well. Great place, but you'd think they'd have it working smoothly by now."

  • "Open 20 months, chef Joe Mitchell has created a masterful menu. The four of us who dined in this lovely spot had a difficult time deciding what to order-- just too many great choices! Three of us opted for the PEI mussels, beautifully crafted with green Thai curry sauce that was to die for. Three large pieces of naan accompanied the bowl of plentiful, succulent mussels. One guest loved his 1/2 dozen blue point oysters. For our entrées, I had a delicious piece of peanut crusted tile fish with sticky rice and a mild curry sauce. Another guest raved about his pan-seared, trout fillet. The fried calamari on kale salad wowed a third, while the pork belly, cheddar grits and chow chow were devoured by another. Ask for Ely, our wonderful server!"

  • "What a great restaurant! Every morsel of food was delicious. This coupled with our waitperson, Beau, who was knowledgeable and friendly made for a wonderful evening. Do try the farro risotto if it is on the menu. And, don't be put off by the pickled radishes on the salad which were surprisingly yummy. If wine is your thing, go there on Wednesday night which is "half priced bottle of wine" night. Don't miss the house-made ice cream for dessert!"

After going to get wine we ordered, our server returned to our table to tell us it was unavailable, we selected another bottle and he returned to say this one too was unavailable. Oddly, he then reappeared to tell us the first bottle, after all, was there. The experience was salvaged when the manager came to our table and took over. He provided wonderful assistance and went overboard to ensure our meals were precisely as we desired. Having recently been advised to omit gluten from my diet, the manager readily offered substitutions for menu items and was most accommodating. The evening was delightful from this point on, as were our dishes (swordfish and risotto cakes, kale and beet salads.) "

  • "Beautiful decor. Impeccable service. Menu changes daily which means many new choices but also makes it difficult to make advance reservations with assurance that there will be appealing choices. In our case the medium plates ( sort of a cross between a regular entree and an appetizer) worked out fine, but wasn't exactly the celebratory dinner we had envisioned. The live music which started halfway through the meal was very good but the noise level made conversation difficult. All in all probably more of a "happening" place than the quiet romantic evening we had envisioned."
