Diner Reviews
  • "Tried Chestnut a few nights ago. Menu was good, had a lot of interesting choices...something for everyone. The seasonal salad and beet with goat cheese salads were both very good. The stand out entree was the chicken stuffed with proceutto and mozzarella cheese. The orzo and sauce made the dish."

  • "We had a great dinner and enjoyed it so much we went back for brunch the next day and the brunch was even better than dinner!"

  • "Very well attended with full house at the bar. All entres were four stars except for the Trout. Wine list was acceptable and reasonably priced."

  • "Excellent food, friendly staff, very eager to please and make adjustments to menu items."

  • "My friend totally enjoyed his steak dinner. My grouper was one of the better fish dishes I've enjoyed. Dry gin martini definitely hit the spot. I'll be back for more."

  • "Service was great, food delish although my chicken with prosciutto and goat cheese was a little dry. Chose a Pinot noir they were out of and had to go with a more expensive choice, only so so. Everything else was great and we would definitely go back. Loved the decor!"

  • "I had a business lunch with two men and myself--a vegetarian female. It was great because there something on the menu for everyone. We all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch."

  • "After we ordered the waiter asked if we would like bread (he failed to mention there is an extra $4.00 charge for 4 pieces of bread and a pat of butter--and not that tasty). My watermelon and crab salad was very good BUT I found 4 pieces of crab shell in my salad. Our waiter was unwelcoming and "barked" at us and rushed us. We were entertaining a young couple who had just moved to Asheville. We were disappointed in our and their experience with Chestnut. We had been to Chestnut several times before and enjoyed the food and service."

  • "Everything was excellent, as always! This visit the creme brûlée flavor was tiramisu and it was so outstanding we went back two days later just for dessert."

  • "Once again, reviews from Open Table led us to a great dining experience in an unfamiliar town for a special occasion. We had an awesome meal at Chestnut. The service was fantastic; the food, even better. I love that Chestnut has a "middle plate" option - larger than an appetizer but not as large as an entree. More restaurants should do this!"

  • "This is a good place to go for interesting food and trying new things. Our group enjoyed the experience."

  • "We had sampled Chestnut while doing the Eating Asheville Tour. Couldn't wait to go back for dinner. The medium plates are an inspiration--just the right amount with one of the stellar salads, leaving room to share a dessert. The attitude of the servers is excellent: No "Hey guys" or "Are you done yet?" As senior citizens, we like being treated with respect."

  • "We loved Chestnut. The food and service are wonderful."

  • "We drove from Chattanooga to meet my sister, who drove from Greenville , SC, for a weekend in Asheville. Chestnuts had been recommended by a friend. Very glad we tried it. Service was superb and food was fabulous. It is a definite "must eat at" restaurant."

  • "Really enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. The only down side was that I was surprised and disappointed that the lobster risotto cake had been flash fired. Just not an Asheville kind of thing I usually find in such nice place. You all could do much better! The beet salad was great!"

  • "We have been here a number of times for lunch and dinner. Lately it seems the quality of food and cooking has been inconsistent I wouldn't recommend lox or salmon here. The ivory salmon was overcooked and was dry and hard. The steak is fine, as well as some other dishes. Overall a disappointment,"

  • "This venue stands out, even in a foodie-town like Asheville."

  • "Our server was friendly and made recommendations that proved to be helpful and well-founded. Food was light, prepared differently than have ever had it before (trout), and very flavorful. I would not hesitate to recommend Chestnut and will return there each time I travel to Asheville."

  • "Their other restaurant, corner kitchen, was far better. Chestnut has a limited and overpriced menu, overpriced and so-so wine lost, and inexperienced servers- and they ain't giving it away. Food good but there are better places for the money."

  • "I originally made reservations for 4 people and the day before I added two more with no problem at all. The restaurant has a great atmosphere with historic touches of Asheville displayed. Our server was very patient and accommodating as she approached several times and we were busy socializing and were not ready to order. My son wanted a touch of bleu cheese on his steak and that was added as a bonus. I had the mussels and lapped up every drop of the curry sauce. The medium plates were sufficient for the 4 elderly diners. It was a great evening with great service."

  • "Crowded on a Wednesday night, so I think they are popular. I suspect mostly tourists. Overly loud, seemed designed to amplify crowd noise. I guess that helps some people feel like they are out for an exciting evening, but I prefer to hear my server or the people at my table. Food was fair, but nothing remarkable. Would go again to join others, but not likely to choose it myself."

  • "The very best lobster bisque I ever tasted anywhere. It's a "must order" item. After that, the risotto cakes are a dream. Then have whatever else strikes your fancy, but don't skip dessert."

  • "What a wonderful evening! There were 13 of us celebrating a dear friend's 60th birthday. We were treated to wonderful service and fabulous food. Our waiter, Beau, was just wonderful and took great care of our large group. The cocktails, beer and wine were exceptional. We started with three baskets of Chestnut-made breads and the Chestnut Charcuterie Plate ( local cheeses and housemade meats). All delicious! Favorite Entrees were the ribs, the trout, tuna and petite filet. Everyone loved it! Great food and great service. Thank you!"

  • "Excellent on everything!!! The food was the best I have had in a VERY long time!!! This was definitely a top quality restaurant with excellent food, outstanding people, and an amazing atmosphere. All the wait staff were extremely courteous, knowledgeable and professional. I was able to speak to the manager, and it was a pleasure to meet him. We will definitely be back, and I would greatly encourage others to make this a destination!!!"

  • "We had a great meal at Chestnut! My family of four dined there recently, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The restaurant itself is located in an old downtown building, and the new owners found a nice balance between old and new when designing the place. We were seated immediately, and our service was excellent throughout the meal. We enjoyed appetizers, salads, entrees, and the soufflé for dessert, and all were outstanding. In particular, the grilled watermelon salad was delicious, and my family enjoyed the stuffed chicken, trout, and beef and pork entrees. We would definitely return!"

  • "I had an opportunity to visit this place. Overall, it made a great impression. Service was great! However, deserts were not all that great..."

  • "I'm sort of a restaurant "snob" and Chestnut is one of my all-time favorites. Consistently excellent food, interesting menu, wonderful ambiance and attentive servers"

  • "The food and service were superb. I had Lamb Merguez and Feta Stuffed Chicken and Tracy had Ricotta cakes and Lobster Ragout. I started off with Rabbit and Wild Rice soup, YUMMY... And our waitress Ely brought us a Chestnut Charcuterie Plate, that was out of this world good. Ely was one of the best waitresses I've had in a good while. She took real good care of us while we were dining at Chestnut."

  • "A great compliment to downtown Asheville. Food was interesting, dialed, and delicious. Service was helpful, weird (a good thing in Asheville) and timely yet not bothersome."

  • "Great food and wonderful service. From the cocktails through the peanut butter soufflé it was a wonderful anniversary dining experience. The lobster bisque had a good amount of lobster in it. Rabbit soup was unique and fine. My steak with accompanying wedge salad was outstanding. I was a little distress that an elegant steak was served with French fries but count me wrong on that. Very thick and flavorful. Wife's tuna was seared perfectly and a generous piece was served. Only criticism is that we we're seated at a table practically adjoining the one next to us as if we we're eating together. Traded a few comments about our respective dishes and although it was pleasant I would have preferred a little more privacy at these prices."

  • "We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Chestnut, and couldn't have made a better choice. The atmosphere is lively, yet romantic. The server was pleasant and very knowledgeable. And the food was spectacular. (Best ribs I've ever eaten and my wife adored the trout.) The next time we're in Asheville, we'll return to Chestnut."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner at Chestnut! Ate at the bar and was taken care of by Cody(?). Had a salad starter but wish I had gotten the watermelon; everyone was raving about it. Had the trout and ti was excellent. I would highly recommend,"

  • "Chestnut offers upscale casual dining. The menu does change, but is always very good. The small plates are a real advantage for those who do not want to eat too much. The petite filet is a great size and is absolutely delicious. Desserts are to die for."
