Diner Reviews
  • "What a great restaurant! I had the tuna tartare and the the halibut. The tuna was very good and the halibut was outstanding. My husband had a lovely baby lettuce salad and the whitefish- also outstanding. The service was very good. The lighting and noise level was pleasant. The wines by the glass provided excellent choices and the white sangria was delicious! All in all a wonderful meal."

  • "For the price of these meals, you would expect better service. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant are lacking…desparately needs updating. The waitress forgot bread and took forever to bring back our check. For special occasions, I would prefer Stained Glass or Found."

  • "The wine list was fabulous. The staff took great care of us and paired the menu to our liking. The food was wonderful. I would come back again soon. I would also recommend this restaurant to anyone who is a foodie."

  • "Went to celebrate a family birthday. Everything was perfect! Had the rack of lamb that was very tender, served with simple side dishes that complemented the flavor of lamb. My daughter had the berkshire pork chop and potatoes, that were loaded with flavor. Seafood served as appetizers and as main courses were appropriately seasoned, not overpowering the seafood. Wine is served by the bottle and by the glass. Will go again and would recommend to anyone who enjoys high quality food and service. The restaurant is near a Metra stop, yet no sounds of train were heard in the restaurant."

  • "We have had dinner there many times over the last 9 years and the food has been consistently excellent. We were disappointed this time only because the food was very salty. The salt took away from the wonderful flavors chef Jose is so capable of creating."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner here. Very good food, superb service, nice atmosphere, etc. Highly recommend it."

  • "It has been over a year since we visited Chef's Station. The original owner retired and the space has undergone a recent significant make over. Peter was actually there to greet us , even though he has retired. While I do miss the old casual chic decor with the copper pipe lamps, the new look is relaxing and comfortable. what I do miss are the old prices! I always felt that the restaurant was a moderately priced good value considering how wonderful the food and services was. Our current dinner was still a a delicious enjoyable dining experience , but higher priced by 20-25%. However, the extensive wine service is really quite a bargain with many fine choices in the $30-40 per bottle range when many places are charging $ 8-12 a glass."

  • "WE came to celebrate our son's graduation from Northwestern. We chose a variety from the menu and all were pleased with their selection. If I lived in Evanston, we would definitely go back here for special occasions or just a fun night out."

  • "Menu and food preparation is excellent. Little older crowd which lacks in vibrancy."

  • "My wife and I went to Chef's Station for our 43rd wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed in any manner. She started with the tuna tartar and I had the beets. Both very visually delicious and both tasting delicious. We followed with the swordfish special and the halibut entries. Superb!! I have never tasted such perfectly cooked swordfish before. One of Evanston's excellent restaurants."

  • "Excellent flavor of the beef tenderloin entree, however I requested that it be cooked medium rare, but it was served medium well to well done., making it a little dry. Other than that, excellent salad and dessert, creme brûlée."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "The chef overcooked the swordfish but the waiter took it right back and redid it for me. Everyone was very gracious."

  • "Pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. Our last visit had been a disaster. This time the food was back to its high quality. It is so nice to go to a restaurant on a Sat. Night and not have to shout to be heard. "

  • "Our favorite fine dining establishment in Evanston. Quiet and tucked away under the train tracks (no, you don't hear or feel the train come through), the dishes are always delicious and inventive. We go there for our anniversary almost every year."

  • "My wife and I have been dining at Chef's Station for special occasions since shortly after it opened. We have always been delighted with the food and service. My wife said the rack of lamb she had on our last visit was the best she ever had in her life. "

  • "We have lived a few miles away from the restaurant for years, and had never heard of it, before finding reviews for it online. The food was amazing, from appetizer through desert. The decor is a bit basic, and the ambience is also basic, but the food makes up for it. Highly recommend the halibut and tenderloin for the main course."

  • "When suburban and city friends meet in the middle in Evanston, a consistently popular choice is Chef's Station. The food is great, and it's conversation-friendly."

  • "We have always enjoyed the Chef Station. This time was not up to par. We have always had a wonderful dinner here and looked forward to another fantastic evening. The dining room was full and greatly understaffed. We waited one hour until even bread arrived. And then the courses came slowly. I love leisurely meals but this was just poorly managed. My husband ordered lamb chops which are usually delicious and they came more done and not juicy-like they were sitting under a warming light. I hope that they get their act together because it was one of our favorite restaurants in the past."

  • "We decided to go to dinner at Chef's Station for our anniversary in the middle of the week. We hadn't been there in a very long time. The restaurant was fairly empty, but we had a wonderful meal there and were quite pleased overall. We had a sea bass special that was very delicate and well seasoned, and also the duck breast, which was quite tasty as well. They had a special corn bisque that was delightful, and for dessert we had grand marnier souffle, which I hadn't eaten in years and which was light and terrific, accompanied by a wonderful grand marnier sauce. We were able to order a half bottle of a lovely white Cote de Rhone wine, and overall we were very pleased with our meal."

  • "We've eaten here several times in the past few months; it gets chosen because even on a busy Saturday night, you can still hear the conversation at your table without having to yell. And it doesn't hurt that the food is fabulous and the service is professional and friendly. Don't miss trying the crispy spinach."

  • "The quality of the food was great... they need more waiters for the service. The couple next to us was visably upset for having to wait for a long time. Still, for the food, I would highly recommend it. Had the best rubarb bread pudding and omelet ever!"

  • "Tried this restaurant for the first time for Easter brunch for a 1pm reservation. Ordered from a fixed menu and enjoyed our appetizers, although my fiance's salad had beets, which he asked to be removed but he was able to eat around it. My soup was delicious. After an hour of waiting for our main course, we asked our waiter to pack up our dessert as we were anxious to get outside to enjoy the spring weather. After multiple excuses from our waiter and another 20+ minutes later, we had to flag down a different waiter to tell him to cancel our order as we were done waiting and being hungry. We understand mistakes being made but very poor management of expectations after an obvious snafu. Very disappointing first impression"

  • "We had a fantastic dinner there - both my dining companion and I enjoyed a meet dish: she had pork and I had short ribs. Both were divine as were the accompanying sides. The wine list is good and while we didn't have time for dessert, the dessert list was enticing. Highly recommend."

  • "We love everything about this place. The food is great; we've had the lamb loin, the duck, and a couple of the fish dishes. All were fabulous. And we never go without getting the crispy spinach. Amazing. Best of all, you can be here on a crowded Saturday night and still hear the conversation at your table. "

  • "The food and the service were excellent. They recently redid the inside and it was nice. The only downside is The ambiance didn't match the excellent food and service. "

  • "One of the best meals in a long, long time. All four of us LOVED our dinner --- something unusual in this day and age. I would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "I went on a date there and the food was some of the best I've ever had. I had the lamb and my date had the duck, and they were both succulent and melted in the mouth. The homemade ice cream was a great ending. Pricy (expect $40/person) so its not an everyday thing, and reservations are practically required to get a table. Its also easy to miss being right under and next to the Metra station. Dress up and have a special night there."

  • "Enter this restaurant from the paint flaking cave like underpass of the Davis street Metra station and find yourself immediately transported into a cheerful, homey and quiet space with excellent food and a most reasonably priced wine list. The help is cheery if a bit rushed and the menu has had some definite thought put into it while not being precious."

  • "We've been to the Chef's Station several times, usually on some special occasion. Most recent visit was a birthday celebration. You will find a menu of sophisticated preparations. This is not your traditional steak house. If fact, on this visit there was no steak offered. We each started with different salads, both of which were made of fresh ingredients and just the right amount of dressing. My wife ordered one of the evening "off menu" specials -- fresh Halibut -- with which she was very pleased. I ordered New Zealand Lamb Loin, which was presented artfully and was very good. The portion sizes were sufficient and I thought a good value, overall. Service was very attentive without being intrusive. The staff makes you feel very welcome."

  • "We had a lovely dinner here with all the elements of a fine dinner just almost making it great but not quite. Chef's station is in a bizarre location under the railroad, but the interior is spacious and attractive. The bread was served as a slice each of nice warmed bread, but a second slice was never offered. The foie gras appetizer was outstanding, perfectly prepared and sweet without being cloying. The lamp entree was just a bit overcooked, medium not medium rare, and just a bit less tender than ideal, but tasty and a generous portion. The short ribs were delicious. For dessert the coconut pecan pie which was just OK, slightly dry. But the napoleon of berries and custard was fabulous, a perfect light and sweet ending. Worth eating here."

  • "We were a party of 6 who don't get together often, so a restaurant where table conversation didn't require a raised voice was a pleasure - despite the restaurant being full. It was also a special occasion, so we were hoping for both good food and service, and were not disappointed. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. The waiter was attentive, but did not hover, and we never felt rushed even though we were the last table to leave."

  • "I have come back to this restaurant many times over the years. The food is always reliable; the menu is manageable and the people from the owner down to the busboy are all very nice and devoted to making your evening enjoyable. The restaurant is quiet and welcoming. During warmer months, there is outdoor dining. A varied menu changes periodically to remain seasonal and fresh. This is not the highest end most unusual or most romantic place, but it is terrific. You will not be rushed and will feel a sense of ease, of unwinding and being able to enjoy the social event of dinner with friends or family as it should be."

  • "We love the food and the ambiance but we didn't get either our drinks or bread for 35-40 minutes. They were short staffed but not apologetic. The dinner was also served a good half hour after we ordered. We would love to come back but would hope the service is much better."

  • "The restaurant is extremely attractive and very inviting. It was also quiet, even though there were many people dining. The service was only okay. We had to remind the waiter that we had ordered a bottle of wine, and when it came it was not chilled properly, and the waiter didn't seem to care when we mentioned it. Also, the food was delicious, but it was not hot -- only warm. And all four of us at the table commented on that. We also had to ask for more bread, which came ... but no butter. So we had to ask for that. So all in all, it was a mixed experience. We will probably think twice before going back as it is fairly expensive and for that amount of $$$, we expect better service."

  • "I have visited Chef's Station with friends, my husband and alone - and I have never failed to have a wonderful meal. Great service, excellent wine list - and of course the heavenly souffle for dessert. Our server asked if my husband and I wanted to share one - I mean, really. I have visited just for the souffle! Highly recommend for the food, adult ambience, warmth and wonderful libations!"

  • "Having never eaten there, I chose the Chef's Station for Valentine's Day based on the reviews. Based on it's rating, I would like to believe the reviews are still true...just not on Valentine's Day at 7pm. We arrived a little early to a line of about 15 other couples waiting to be seated. The owner/manager seemed overwhelmed and understaffed with the number of patrons that were in line. I know stuff happens, but a glass of champagne (or something similar) would of gone a long way during the 20 minute wait. The preset menu and wine selection were good (butternut soup = amaz) and had a modern twist but the atmosphere was dated (seating, ceiling tiles, carpet, lighting). Might be back for lunch, but would spend $300/w tip somewhere else."
