  • "The food is amazing. Like you have your own private chef! Brought our parents and we all loved it. The service is excellent too."

  • "I loved every single thing about this restaurant, the food, the workers and most of all the chef, chef Melba. If you're looking for high quality food this is the place for you. As you walk in the environment feels stress free and you are greeted by the wonderful staff. I tried this plate called the casino, and the taste was beyond this world. I enjoyed the freshly made pico de Gallo , the richness in the meat , absolutely everything . For dessert I had a chocolate box served with chocolate mousse and a fresh strawberry to top it off. I've never seen this any place else and I definitely fell in love with it . This was my first time here and I'm looking toward to bringing my friends. Once again thank you for your service chef Melba."

  • "Delicious food. And no corkage for the first bottle on Sundays. That was a lovely surprise. We had a wonderful server who made great recommendations but the kitchen's timing was off. All the plates for each course did not come out simultaneously. And it could be up to a 5 minute delay. But I would still highly recommend it."

  • "We greatly enjoyed our dinners on Sunday evening at Chef Melba's, feasting on sea bass, ahi tuna, halibut and prime rib. All were exceptionally prepared and delivered hot to our table. All the seafood was wonderful, but the prime rib was particularly good. Done medium rare with a sauce that was more than just au jus. The spices in the sauce rounded out that dish to make it one of the best prime rib dinners I've every had. We will be back, and we highly recommend Chef Melba's for anyone looking for a great dinner in a relaxing atmosphere!"

  • "We've eaten here numerous times and the food is always delicious. While we missed our ahi tuna tower, they had a different ahi tuna appetizer that was equally delicious. We appreciate that Melba offers different items without deleting the essence of the dish. My husband's lamb was tender and superbly prepared. I had the fish stew in coconut broth - superb, and the third person had fish - a large portion (which is not always true for fish in other restaurants), and he said it was delicious. The crowning event was the chocolate bag...mmmmm."

  • "Heavenly, started w/ Ahi Rice Cups, fresh ahi topped rich avocado served in crisp rice cups w/ habanero sauce on side so can control how hot.Clams, a plentiful dish w/ a wonderful wine sauce.Nice wine choices, reasonably priced, can start white switch to red w/ dinner.Speaking of dinner, Melba cooks everything herself including my Seabass which melted in my mouth,so great!Served steaming hot w/ delightful tropical salsa, vegs cooked perfectly.Everything sounded so good, shortribs, scallops, halibut, friend got day boat,a whole roast Loup de mar fish,I almost got jealous over.Equally delicious. Server had impeccable timing, she was helpful &friendly.Signature dessert is dark chocolale filled with wonderful mousse & fresh berries. Amazing Place."

  • "I was wise enough to choose Chef Melba's Bistro to treat myself to dinner on Saturday night. I was seated immediately by the friendly and accommodating host and shown to my table. Let me just say: my server was fantastic! His wine knowledge was unparalleled, even by some French somaliers I've met and he directed me to a beautiful bottle of red to accompany my meal. Speaking of which, the cuisine was divine! I ordered the tuna cups to be followed by the whole branzino. I've paid double that amount for such a fish at other places where it wasn't as good as Chef Melba's. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, with a crispy outside layer and tender interior texture, this branzino was to die for! For desert, I ordered the chocolate bag! A must!"

  • "Chef Melba's handling of and creativity with fish and seafood are outstanding. What a treat this was. I had the best Sauvignon Blanc I ever tasted. Esk Valley from New Zealand 2011. This was simply unforgettable. The waitress attending my table was the sweetest and kindest person. A quality I really appreciate. Very nice dining and (relatively speaking) reasonably priced for fine dining in Hermosa Beach"

  • "We so wanted to love it, but couldn't. Service was excellent and ambience was nice but a bit loud since it's small. We started with some apps - raw scallops and tuna cups. The tuna cups were pretty good (highlight of the meal) and the scallops were decent. We then moved to the macadamia encrusted halibut and the seared scallops. The halibut was actually devoid of much flavor and the veggies were also pretty bland. The scallops were good but nothing to write home about - pretty standard. Portions were were also relatively small. For the money we were expecting food that was so tasty we'd have to come back. That was not the case and therefore not worth the price. We should have tried the lamb shank I think. Good people, food average, pricey."

  • "Ambiance is informal, much like a niche European restaurant-- unpretentious & relaxed, but with attentive service and good presentation of food. This was my third visit in the last year. I have had only fish dishes, e.g. the macadamia encrusted halibut, the sea bass, both fresh and succulent. Excellent, definitely a match for some of the pricier places in the South Bay or West L.A. area. Had a wedding dinner there (closed for 35 guests) with wonderful hors d'oeuvre. Have sampled the braised ribs, also excellent. Salads are simple fresh greens with interesting fresh additions and delicate dressings. Chef Melba gives personal attention to all the food preparation."

  • "I made a reservation for a one year anniversary and was not disappointed. This restaurant is a couple blocks north of the pier, so we were able to escape the normal hustle and bustle of Hermosa. Our server Anna was very knowledgeable of the menu (both food and drink) and was very pleasant to talk to. We saw amazing-looking dishes everywhere we looked and finally decided on the braised short ribs and almond crusted sole. PHENOMENAL. Chef Melba herself was busy cooking up dish after dish and answering any questions the patrons directed in her direction. We were able to chat with her after our meal and found her to be quite delightful. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant and we will be back in the near future."

  • "We had a reservation for 7 pm on a Saturday night. When we arrived, we waited until 7:40 before we were seated. We had to remind the hostess that we had a 7 pm reservation as she was going to seat 7:30 reservations before us. When we did get a table, it was right by the kitchen and very awkward. Since the restaurant is so small, they need to work on spacing out their reservations to make sure to accommodate them on a timely basis. The food was okay but nothing special."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday and wanted to take our time with dinner. So we ordered 4 appetizers. The waiter brought them one at a time. All were exceptional - the minced tuna cup and the uni were amazingly fresh. The popcorn shell fish comes with an excellent spicy sauce. The scallops were also very fresh with a perfect light slightly tart sauce. Entres were equally good. The grilled rare tuna steak with a citrus sauce - it was so good, I cut it into tiny pieces to make it last longer. The house steak was good and came with especially good veggies. The fish soup was good, too. We got the chocolate cup desert - just fine. We brought our own wine - no problem. Service was excellent."

  • "I absolutely love Chef Melba's. It is our go-to place for a nice night out. The food is amazing! On this particular night, service was a little slow. However, this was the first time it has been anything but perfection out of the numerous times we have dined there. Will definitely be returning soon!"

  • "The service was awful, too many tables in a very tight space, too little help, what help there was was nasty and overwhelmed. And then the appetizer was so small and the entrees we received were not what we ordered. The waitress was annoyed when we ordered a bottle of wine. Said we should only have a glass and was very rude . NEVER AGAIN! And it's not cheap! Incredibly loud"

  • "The reviews sounded made it sound so promising. But when we arrived, Chez Melba was way too loud, way too crowded, and had tables so close together that you were part of your neighbors conversation whether you wanted to be or not. The waitress was slow to bring drinks, and slower yet to bring our appetizers. On the other hand, when they arrived, they were delicious, but our waitress was so irritable and rude, it cast a pall over the evening. No one was happy in the restaurant, probably because they'd all been waiting so long for their food. An hour into our wait, we were told that one of our entrees (the lamb) not available - the substitute (chicken curry) was a bust. No one in our group will be going back....."

  • "Chef Melba's is consistently good. It is small and the tables are close together, but, that can be an advantage when you see something being served that catches your eye...without a doubt the staff and customers are always friendly perhaps because everyone is so close."

  • "Best fine dining in Southbay. Excellent food and quaint atmosphere."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "We started with the roasted peppers and mussels. (One must request bread by the piece, even with the brothy mussel appetizer!) We followed with mixed seafood soup and mushroom ravioli. Both were good, neither was outstanding. The lamb shank and sea bass, which we had come for, were sold out. It is a small restaurant, and the waitstaff was apologetic, explaining that they had been especially busy on Friday, so even though it was only 7 pm on Saturday, some items were not longer available. So, the food was fine. But the ambiance -- not so much. It was really loud! And there were only two other parties in the place. Tables are very close together, the waiter could barely squeeze through. OK for groups, but not really a date night place."

  • "Chef Melba always greets you with a big smile from the open kitchen as you walk in! The macadamia crusted halibut was excellent as is everything on the menu. My favorite restaurant in Hermosa"

  • "A big party of 12-18 (2 tables) took over the small room the whole time I was there...very loud and too close. I wish I'd known. Next time I would ask what is happening there before going. Fish was undercooked. Otherwise food was good. Desserts excellent."

  • "the food was fantastic. i made a reservation online and when we arrived (right on time), a table was ready but they refused to seat us. 15 minutes later, the same table was open and no one had left the restaurant, and we were finally seated. It is a fairly small restaurant with an open kitchen which made a great atmosphere. nevertheless, the service left a lot to be desire. by the time we ordered, every table the was seated before us (except one) had their food, but it still took about an hour and a half to get our food."

  • "Chef Melba is a proven commodity. Always fantastic food prepared like no where else. We have been long-time customers who have never had an underwhelming experience. Very glad to see she revamped the menu entirely. It means many more exciting visits to Chef Melba are in-store for us."

  • "Whatever you do, do not judge this restaurant from it's outside appearance (it looks like it might be small and crambed but once inside it was wonderful). The food was to die for, the service was excellent, and the owner was a pleasure to talk with. I will be coming back for sure."

  • "I was in town for the ncaa title game and looking for a nice dinner spot near Hermosa Beach as we were going to a big pre game party there on Sunday night (1/5). So I used open table, as I usually do when I'm traveling, and Chef Melba's Bistro caught my eye. It was wonderful! I had the scallops, which were incredible, my wife had the spinach ravioli which was equally wonderful. The service was absolutely great, we met "Chef Melba" She was awesome. The experience could not have been more pleasant. A quaint dining room with tons of charm, great food, impeccable service, in a beach town in SoCal. Doesn't get much better."

  • "I have walked by this place many times looked in the big windows, I have always wanted to stop in and I am SO GLAD I finally did. I had some friends come in from town and we had the best dining experience I have had in a long time from the moment we walked we where instantly greeted by the waitress and Melba, and it just gets better from there after we got seated she went over the specials which was a treat I just had get a whole fish snapper with a tangerine glaze, friends had Scallops, & Jon Dory everything was so moist tender cooked to perfection!! We where not sure what wine to get so many great choices she recommend a fine white wine and also mentioned some 1st bite to start off Ahi Tuna. Great Service and FOOD will be back"

  • "We are from montreal and first went to Melba's in May. It was one of our best dining experiences we have ever had. We returned in December and planned to have our Christmas Eve dinner there. The experience was not the the same, the food was mediocre and the service, which was so friendly the first time was almost rude the second time. We felt rushed and the waitress seemed bitter about working. At one point she just threw cutlery on our table, the charm of the Resturant was Melba who was friendly as usual."

  • "Each visit to Chef Melba's is a new and enjoyable experience. Since the menu changes regularly with the availability of fresh seafood, fish and vegetables, it is rare to find the same thing on the menu on consecutive visits, so you will never be tired of ordering the same thing. Entrees are prepared to perfection, and appetizers are always unique and very tasty. One regular dessert item that you must try is the dark chocolate bag. My Open Table reservation, made earlier that same day, was not on the restaurant's reservation list, but we were looking for a seat early enough in the evening that they were able to accommodate us. However, the restaurant was full by the time we left, so that could have been a different scenario!"

  • "This is our 3rd meal at Chef Melba's and as always, the food was outstanding and the service was mediocre. I don't know why they can't get this right. Our server was nice, but I wouldn't say friendly. She wanted to turn that table so fast we were in and out of there in one hour and a $100 (and we brought our own wine!)."

  • "I hosted a business dinner for locals and out-of-towners. Chef Melba's was selected based on the many favorable reviews and the chance to find a new place to dine. The food, as well as the service exceeded our expections. The entire table was pleased from appetizers through main course on into dessert. The wine list, all-though not extensive, offered excellent selections to compliment the menu. I will dine here again! Thanks Chef Melba!"

  • "We reserved for 8 and were seated right on time. Service and ambiance were great, and the place smells wonderful with the open kitchen. We loved all our appetizers and salads. Their fish soup entree was somewhat bland, and two fish entrees we ordered seemed overcooked. One of us ordered the whole fish (snapper?) that was a special, and it was wonderful. The chicken curry was also really good. Of the desserts, we preferred the apple cobbler with its amazing sweet crust, with the chocolate bag and bread pudding a distant second place. We'll go back but we'll stick to appetizers and specials when we do."

  • "We always have great food here and almost always order seafood, which is the specialty. Our party of three was very happy once again, although the Petrale Sole only had one caper on it and the guest would have liked more. The meal started with grilled bread as always, and it was fantastic. We will continue to eat here."

  • "Chef Melba's Bistro wants to be a gourmet destination (and charges accordingly) but neither the special appetizers nor the scallop or curry entrees we had were of particular note. Actually the shredded chicken in the curry was overcooked and chewy. The wait staff were friendly but green, and one was possibly the owner's early-teen daughter. Somewhat charming, but not what you would expect of fine dining. The expensive wine list is equally uninspired with most wines on it available up the street at Vons for a fraction, but the $15 corkage fee means you are likely stuck with $30 for the cheapest bottle."

  • "I normally don't write reviews, but Chef Melba's was something special. I took my mother & sister there after a long weekend of dining out at some of the highest rated restaurants, and we all agreed Chef Melba's was the best. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the servers were extremely knowledgable. The food was excellent. It was artfully plated & so fun to look at before we dove in. Everything was delicious. We all ended up passing plates around so we could eat some of everything. You could tell most of the guests were regulars, and the chef made a point to speak to everyone & always had a smile on her face. It was an overall great dining experience, and I can see myself going back again and again."
