At Chef Melba’s Bistro, we use the freshest of ingredients to create your meals, and our menu changes with the seasons. As such there may be slight differences between what is posted on this website and what is available on the day you dine with us. We may also add daily specials utilizing fresh ingredients found at the local farmer's market. This menu has been put together with the goal of healthy life and healthy living in mind; to that end, Chef Melba uses organic natural products and wild seafood to the greatest extent possible.

We have a delightful selection of premium wines and beers to accompany your meal - see our wine menu for some of our current selections. You may bring your own bottle for a modest corkage fee.

  • "The favors in each dish stood out. Starting with the mango ceviche and the scallops to the fish stew and lamb with chorizo. The fresh and clean food worked really well for the people in our group who are gluten allergic and vegetarian. The chef took care to check in and share her culinary journey and philosophy. Every part of the meal including desserts were amazing. One of the best seafood restaurants in LA."

  • "This is a very small gourmet restaurant near Hermosa Beach Pier. If you like quality food...this is the place for you. I had the butter dish which was absolutely delicious. My daughter ordered the braised short rib. Both dished were beautifully plated. The salad produce is local organic. Get ready.. desert was a delectable chocolate box filled with fresh berries and passion fruit cream and raspberry purée. I love restaurants where you get a chance to meet the chef. Melba comes out a mingles with her patrons. This is a small restaurant and the noise level is high. I would definitely return to Melba's Bistro."

  • "Chef Melba greeted us as, & asked about our experience as we left. Waitstaff attentive/knowledgeable. A bit cozy, quite noisy. Kitchen is open view with a homey feel. A bit of bumping chairs/elbows (no one seemed to mind). Bread is grilled & delicious. Popcorn Conch (a tad bready). The Lamb Shank was tasty served in a large bowl, swimming in Chorizo Chili. The shank continued to submerge in a sea of chili so I blindly tried to locate & cut it while trying not to cause a tidal wave. The Apple Cobbler was phenomenal! It was out of this world. The waiter was kind enough to offer more quarters for parking so we could an additional cobbler at my daughter's request. Overall, the food was good, Chef Melba warm & friendly & waitstaff was spot on."

  • "I travel to the area for business multiple times a year. Lately I've been in the habit of going to the same restaurants over and over again. This trip I made it a point to find someplace new and I couldn't have been more impressed. The food and the service were fantastic. So much so I had to go back a few days later to try more things on the menu. Over the course of my two meals I experienced 5 appetizers, 3 entrees and 2 desserts. I had my favorites but everything was impressive. You really can't go wrong. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again with coworkers, clients, or by myself. This is my new favorite restaurant in the area. Darren's just lost a lot of business!"

The restaurant is built like a neighborhood diner with a small dining area surrounded by windows. Our early evening experience was bright and airy with plenty of beach people watching in the funky neighborhood."

  • "Food quality was below average. Cigars good. Clam broth was watery and unsalted. Sashimi was over sauced. After meals Main dishes continued with mistakes. Desserts were average too. Chocolate box ok, apple crumble was less than average. Not the best. Overall, food looks good but lacks flavor. Seating is only good thing about this place, as you can interact. Service low too, waiter tried to hit on my date when I went to the lavatory. Not recommended, we both agreed we will not go back and said good to try."

  • "Great restaurant. Have already recommended it to numerous friends in Hermosa Beach and even the Valley. The fish was great. One of the best I've had in LA. Service was spot on as they were very helpful and not over-bearing. The only minor issue was the noise level. After 8ish it got busy and very noisy (even noisier than Bestia). Still, the food was so good I was too busy eating to do any talking. Will be back again."

  • "Chef Melba's is absolutely one of my most favorite restaurants in all of Los Angeles and THE place to go for seafood. High praise, I know, but I have had seafood around the world in over four different continents, and this still tops my list. Not only are the ingredients incredibly fresh, but the flavors that Melba sears in are just downright sensational. I have not had squid, scallops and halibut as amazing as this. On par with the quality food is the customer service. The staff is extremely friendly, quick, and above all - Unpretentious. Melba herself is a charismatic, effervescent, and gracious host who treats each customer as if they were coming to her house for dinner."

All the plates for each course did not come out simultaneously. And it could be up to a 5 minute delay. But I would still highly recommend it."

  • "I loved every single thing about this restaurant, the food, the workers and most of all the chef, chef Melba. If you're looking for high quality food this is the place for you. As you walk in the environment feels stress free and you are greeted by the wonderful staff. I tried this plate called the casino, and the taste was beyond this world. I enjoyed the freshly made pico de Gallo , the richness in the meat , absolutely everything . For dessert I had a chocolate box served with chocolate mousse and a fresh strawberry to top it off. I've never seen this any place else and I definitely fell in love with it . This was my first time here and I'm looking toward to bringing my friends. Once again thank you for your service chef Melba."

  • "We greatly enjoyed our dinners on Sunday evening at Chef Melba's, feasting on sea bass, ahi tuna, halibut and prime rib. All were exceptionally prepared and delivered hot to our table. All the seafood was wonderful, but the prime rib was particularly good. Done medium rare with a sauce that was more than just au jus. The spices in the sauce rounded out that dish to make it one of the best prime rib dinners I've every had. We will be back, and we highly recommend Chef Melba's for anyone looking for a great dinner in a relaxing atmosphere!"

  • "We've eaten here numerous times and the food is always delicious. While we missed our ahi tuna tower, they had a different ahi tuna appetizer that was equally delicious. We appreciate that Melba offers different items without deleting the essence of the dish. My husband's lamb was tender and superbly prepared. I had the fish stew in coconut broth - superb, and the third person had fish - a large portion (which is not always true for fish in other restaurants), and he said it was delicious. The crowning event was the chocolate bag...mmmmm."

  • "Heavenly,started w/ Ahi Rice Cups,fresh ahi topped rich avocado served in crisp rice cups w/ habanero sauce on side so can control how hot.Clams, a plentiful dish w/ a wonderful wine sauce.Nice wine choices, reasonably priced, can start white switch to red w/ dinner.Speaking of dinner, Melba cooks everything herself including my Seabass which melted in my mouth,so great!Served steaming hot w/ delightful tropical salsa,vegs cooked perfectly.Everything sounded so good, shortribs,scallops,halibut, friend got day boat,a whole roast Loup de mar fish,I almost got jealous over.Equally delicious. Server had impeccable timing, she was helpful &friendly.Signature dessert is dark chocolale filled with wonderful mousse & fresh berries. Amazing Place."

  • "I was wise enough to choose Chef Melba's Bistro to treat myself to dinner on Saturday night. I was seated immediately by the friendly and accommodating host and shown to my table. Let me just say: my server was fantastic! His wine knowledge was unparalleled, even by some French somaliers I've met and he directed me to a beautiful bottle of red to accompany my meal. Speaking of which, the cuisine was divine! I ordered the tuna cups to be followed by the whole branzino. I've paid double that amount for such a fish at other places where it wasn't as good as Chef Melba's. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, with a crispy outside layer and tender interior texture, this branzino was to die for! For desert, I ordered the chocolate bag! A must!"

  • "We so wanted to love it, but couldn't. Service was excellent and ambience was nice but a bit loud since it's small. We started with some apps - raw scallops and tuna cups. The tuna cups were pretty good (highlight of the meal) and the scallops were decent. We then moved to the macadamia encrusted halibut and the seared scallops. The halibut was actually devoid of much flavor and the veggies were also pretty bland. The scallops were good but nothing to write home about - pretty standard. Portions were were also relatively small. For the money we were expecting food that was so tasty we'd have to come back. That was not the case and therefore not worth the price. We should have tried the lamb shank I think. Good people, food average, pricey."

  • "Chef Melba's handling of and creativity with fish and seafood are outstanding. What a treat this was. I had the best Sauvignon Blanc I ever tasted. Esk Valley from New Zealand 2011. This was simply unforgettable. The waitress attending my table was the sweetest and kindest person. A quality I really appreciate. Very nice dining and (relatively speaking) reasonably priced for fine dining in Hermosa Beach"

  • "I made a reservation for a one year anniversary and was not disappointed. This restaurant is a couple blocks north of the pier, so we were able to escape the normal hustle and bustle of Hermosa. Our server Anna was very knowledgeable of the menu (both food and drink) and was very pleasant to talk to. We saw amazing-looking dishes everywhere we looked and finally decided on the braised short ribs and almond crusted sole. PHENOMENAL. Chef Melba herself was busy cooking up dish after dish and answering any questions the patrons directed in her direction. We were able to chat with her after our meal and found her to be quite delightful. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant and we will be back in the near future."

  • "Ambiance is informal, much like a niche European restaurant-- unpretentious & relaxed, but with attentive service and good presentation of food. This was my third visit in the last year. I have had only fish dishes, e.g. the macadamia encrusted halibut, the sea bass, both fresh and succulent. Excellent, definitely a match for some of the pricier places in the South Bay or West L.A. area. Had a wedding dinner there (closed for 35 guests) with wonderful hors d'oeuvre. Have sampled the braised ribs, also excellent. Salads are simple fresh greens with interesting fresh additions and delicate dressings. Chef Melba gives personal attention to all the food preparation."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday and wanted to take our time with dinner. So we ordered 4 appetizers. The waiter brought them one at a time. All were exceptional - the minced tuna cup and the uni were amazingly fresh. The popcorn shell fish comes with an excellent spicy sauce. The scallops were also very fresh with a perfect light slightly tart sauce. Entres were equally good. The grilled rare tuna steak with a citrus sauce - it was so good, I cut it into tiny pieces to make it last longer. The house steak was good and came with especially good veggies. The fish soup was good, too. We got the chocolate cup desert - just fine. We brought our own wine - no problem. Service was excellent."
