My husband and I go to Chef Mavro every year for my birthday and are impressed by every element of our experience - the food, the wines, the service - EVERYTHING is phenomenal. It was wonderful to see Chef Mavro himself presenting dishes to his guests and it was lovely to have his wife Donna visit every table sharing her aloha. I have traveled to many incredible destinations in my life and had some amazing dining experiences, but NONE compare to the experience of Chef Mavro. It is creative, delicious, world class dining without the pretentious atmosphere - everything is done with aloha. Chef Mavrothalassitis will always be my favorite chef and Chef Mavro's will continue the #1 fine dining experience I recommend to friends and family.

Chef Mavro ranks as one of the best restaurants at which we have dined. Frankly, it is hard to believe that there are not lines outside the door waiting to get in. We think that it is just not that well known, and that soon it will be just as hard to get into as Alan Wong's. We had one four course meal and one seven course meal. The Hudson Valley foies gras on the latter was described by my wife as the best she has ever had. When Chef Mavro himself cut open the salt-crusted Onaga table side, it just blew our mind. The wine pairings were exquisite, particularly the 2009 Brunello paired with the succulent lamb loin. A little stuffy for some and in a sketchy neighborhood, but the French/Hawaiian cuisine can't be beat.

You only have two choices here: both are wonderful price-fix meals. Each is outstanding and come with optional wine pairings which are very well thought out. Service was attentive and professional and for a pleasant change, this is a restaurant where it is quiet enough that you can actually have a conversation. $$$ but worth every penny.

Having dined all over the world and loving good food this is one of the top dining experiences of all time. The care in menu selection, the tastes, the ingredients were all so fine! Healthy, delicious food paired with great wines in a warm and unpretentious atmosphere. This is excellent dining for the traveled foodie or for people like us who simply love delicious food and tastes that create a great food memory. Our hats are off to Chef Mavro! Our introduction to Chef Mavro came when we pulled in to the parking lot and were escorted to the door by the parking attendant. Good start, but something about the wait staff seemed "off key" - - perfunctory service, no coordination. The wine flights were not well-selected and were mostly tart. The salt-crusted fish turns out to be fish cooked in pastry. Well, actually, it was overcooked and lifeless. Not good value for $500 plus for two.

If you like great food and wine pairings, this is the place for you. We did the Chef's tasting menu (the more expensive of the 2) with some substitutions from the regular tasting menu. We split one wine pairing between the two of us which was enough except for with one course. The service was very good. It is an expensive evening out, but I would definitely recommend it for a special occasion.l

My wife and I went for our 10th anniversary dinner and had an amazing dinner! Flavors were superb; portion size and presentation were perfect; and the wine pairings were all spot on. Service was outstanding. The only thing they could improve on are the decor and view; just could use an update. Once you're inside it's very comfortable...and the service and food more than make up for it. Once the course start coming it doesn't matter where you are...just bring more of the delicious food!

My wife loved the return of the greatest hits menu including the fresh vegetables, Salt Crusted Onaga (served table side by the chef himself--perfectly cooked and topped with a vibrant flavorful tomato sauce), lamb loin with eggplant caviar in a crispy dough package, and the light as air bite sized Malasadas with vanilla bean ice cream. I tried the Chef menu and was wowed by course (the duck with Bhutanese black rice and lobster were favorites) after course perfectly paired with wine. I reluctantly shared one course with my wife--the goat cheese with kumquats and white honey, but I kept the decadent chocolate to myself. Service was warm and friendly. Special celebration and memorable evening!

My friend and I are dining buddies who can afford to indulge our tastebuds at least every 4 - 6 months. Our dinner the other evening at Chef Mavro's was quite an experience: the excellent service is a given, and, the 4-course meal was a delightful series of surprises. At the end of the dinner, we were happily stuffed, yet, we walked, not waddled, out the door.

This is my go to restaurant when I want a gourmet dinner and have had enough talking wait staff and huge portions. The food is of international quality and is served beautifully with attention to the look as well as the taste of the dish. Local ingredients are used as mush as possible for an international menu. The wine pairings are excellent and are wines that often one doesn't see much of, here or on the mainland. I eat here with each season and sometimes more as there are plenty of choices. It is the best dinner in Honolulu in my book. Just the palate cleanser with fresh watermelon balls in a gelee is enough to know you are in the presence of a true chef.

Foie Gras perfection with mango three ways(pickled mango in one preparation adding a bright hit of acidity). The wine pairings with each course elevated the entire experience to a high note. Another favorite was the mushroom salad with hearts of palm, poha berries (loved this pop of flavor!!) and fresh taste of the sea--sea asparagus. The China town day boat catch was exceptional in preparation. It was difficult to choose our favorite course, but with out a doubt, the Wagyu beef with crispy Brussels sprouts was near the top of the list. The local goat cheese course with white honey is exceptional. And oh, the chocolate....it was out of this world with mac nuts, caramel and more.

The food was fabulous. The portions were more than sufficient and perfect for a multi-course dining experience. The staff were very observant, courteous, professional, and knowlegable. I had previously read reviews about portions being too small and the wait period between courses too long, but I found neither to be the case. Everything was appropriate and perfectly fitting for a true fine dining experience. We celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary and were able to create a wonderful memory at Chef Mavro's. If I wanted a quick, cheap, and large portioned dinner I would have gone elsewhere. However, I wanted a classy fine dining experience with exquisite food and service and I found that at Chef Mavro's.
