Diner Reviews
  • "We had the 11 course dinner with the wine pairings. Lots of wine if you don't drink much. But, worth it. Every course was something to talk about. We will always go back there. Go hungry. Delicious experience! "

  • "Went with a group to celebrate after taking a board exam earlier in the day. Service was exceptional. A couple of the courses on the new menu were not my favorite, but others were phenomenal. The wine pairings were great as well. A special congratulatory dessert at the end was a really nice touch and really tasty as well. While the meal is definitely pricey, it is truly a great culinary experience making it great for a special occassion."

  • "This is a restaurant for the food, not a bar scene or drinks. There is no bar, no wine list, you go for the food. The menu is a fixe' menu with either a 5 or 7 course meal, only a main entree option on the menu and the option of wine pairing. For the caliber of restaurant the corkage fee is a reasonable $25, but make sure to review the menu first since you'll want to take a wine that will compliment the dishes, not a heavy red wine. Though the portions are not large, there are an ample number of them to make this a complete meal and not leave hungry. Each course is superbly and meticulously made to offer splendid blends of texture and flavors. None of it is standard high end kitchen preparation such as Alan Wongs. Recommended!!!"

  • "An excellent dining experience but very expensive. Would return to dine for a special occasion but not suitable for regular dining outings."

  • "The food and service are always great at Chef Mavro!"

  • "We had the four course dinner, with wine pairing, at Chef Mavro. Each course had so many wonderful flavors and the wine pairings were spot on. The fish course was one of the best pieces of fish I have ever had -- tender and tasty! Overall, a fantastic dining experience - would definitely recommend!"

  • "The day boat China Town style snapper was exceptional - cooked to perfection. However, it is hard for my wife and I to select a favorite course . . . selecting from the beautifully prepared lobster, with the light as air Chorizo Taro dumpling, to the Wagyu beef with lightly sweetened Brussels sprouts and a celery mousse. Wow. The cheese course with kumquats was combined with a white honey which we couldn't stop licking off the honey dripper. Everything paired with gorgeous wines. Relaxing and fun atmosphere with seamless service."

  • "What I love most of all about dining in Chef Mavro is that each dish is harmonious and pleasing to the senses in ways that are not found in upscale restaurants. Recently I had the opportunity to dine at several high end restaurants. If I were to select one, I would choose Chef Mavro. It was our anniversary dinner and we couldn't have had a better experience."

  • "We dined here to celebrate a birthday and it was the second to the last night of the winter truffle menu. Excellent and I can't wait to see what the new spring/summer menu will bring."

  • "Went for New years and had an absolutely amazing experience! This is the place you have to go to if visiting Oahu. Get the wine pairing dinner and you'll be telling your friends about it . . . FOREVER! The service is perfect and the food is THE BEST !"

  • "It was our Anniversary dinner. The service was outstanding! From the moment we parked to the end of our dinner, the entire staff was extremely courteous. The décor was modern, but nothing very memorable, I just recall thinking thank goodness that the window was partially frosted next to us because for part of our dinner, there was a man standing right outside. The food mostly was great, portion sizes were perfect. We got the wine pairings and it did make a difference on the overall food experience. I should have asked about the price however for choosing special menu substitutions - got the wagu beef instead of the duck, not really worth the price for what you get. Disappointed by the desserts - not a strong point to the menu."

  • "Chef Mavro and Donna: Thank you for the wonderful food and service. Even if my sister and I visit once a year, your staff remembers us. That is special. Also, your staff was so accomodating when we asked for only 1 wine pairing but that my sister wanted a sip of each wine serving. We did not expect a set of wine glasses for her. Keep up the good work! We'll be back again."

  • "Having lived in Honolulu for 24 years, my choice is the Chef Mavro for the excellent food and rare and great choice of wine pairings. Outstanding service by welcoming staff, comfortable seats, fresh Hawaiian Protea flower on the table are my favorite. This time, Fried Bhutanese rice (small side dish for duck) was amazing for that texture, taste, looks and I loved it so much."

  • "Food was really nice. Every dishes were very tasty. They served glass wines that matched each dishes. That service was very good."

  • "2nd course was a little dry (don't recall the name of the fish), but otherwise everything was exquisite. The 4-course dinner with wine pairings was our selection, and I upgraded to the better wine selection on one of the courses. Quite pricey at $440 with tax and tip for two people, but we had to see what all the buzz was about!"

  • "Most creative food in Hawaii. Carefully prepared food from start to finish. Best wine pairings in any restaurant I frequent. Service is unobtrusive, but very efficient. A must stop in Honolulu."

  • "Fantastic experience with beautiful, delicious food, thoughtfully paired wines and impeccable service. Off the beaten path, but worth the modest effort to get to Chef Mavro!"

  • "We had a good meal, except for one course (the catch of the day, onaga) which was basically flavorless. Service was quite slow. Sommelier provided only limited description of each wine pairing."

  • "It was awesome...the waiter was very personable and took great care to explain detail...everyone in the staff knew it was our special occasion...has been the same since we were here 4 years or so ago...Good job Chef Mavro! And finally the dessert (chocolate??) was out of this world!! - Great job pastry chef!"

  • "I've been to Chef Mavro many times but haven't been there in a while. It was a great experience and the food pairing was the best. I ordered the 11 course with wine and truffles. I didn't know what to expect with the truffles but it was a truly new experience for my palate. Always something new and unique, I will definitely treat myself to a dinner here again."

  • "the food is excellent. one of the best fine dining places around waikiki. however, the ambience takes you straight back to the 80s."

  • "Best restaurant in the islands. Offers a unique tasting style menu combining traditional French haut or grande cuisine with Island Fusion cuisine with great diversity of dishes. Expensive but worth it. Reservations a must."

  • "We were a little disappointed with Chef Mavro although the food was quite good. The Valentine's day menu was expensive and we warned the restaurant in advance that my wife does not eat oysters or beef. Instead of the oyster and caviar she was given a tiny salad of undercooked corn and instead of the wagyu beef she was given some fennel and a small layered vegetable dish. She is not vegetarian and the substitutions were not in any way equivalent to the dishes they replaced. No discount was offered although the two most expensive ingredients were omitted. Overall the tasting menu was good but in our view it was overpriced, as was the wine pairing. Based on this experience, Chef Mavro is certainly no Joel Robuchon."

  • "Food was tasty and the experience was wonderful however it is ridiculously too expensive for just a few bites and bread. Not something i would do again in the future. Service was good. The wait times between treats or "meals" was lengthy, we were there for nearly 2 full hours. I was expecting a live band, a show or lively performance but no, just sit there and eat 2 ounce snacks."

  • "We happen to read about chef m in open table. We reserved for valentines. They called a couple of weeks later to say they had a 7 course V Day menu with win pairing and asked if we wanted on. It was extremely expensive but worth it. Cost as much as meals for 9 days on the island. Wine pairing were great. Variety wonderful. Service spectacular. I could go on and on. If you have the money GOOOO"

  • "Chef Mavro's is among the best dining experiences of a life time. From the impeccable staff, to comfortable, elegant and in obtrusive surroundings to the brilliant menu and extraordinary preparations, there is no better place. We were there for truffle night. The menu is prix fixe featuring 4. 6 or the grand 10 course degustation menu. We opted for the 6 course. Not on the menu is a marvelous amuse bouche of marinated onaga suchi with lemon grass; my bouche was hardily amused there is also a nice palate cleanser and some lovely sweet treats. The menu changes with the seasons. The wine pairings are great, but treat yourself to the sommelier selections; they are extraordinary. If you are in Honolulu with a big budget, this is the place to go!"

  • "What can you say about Oahu's (by far) best restaurant and, probably, one of very few contenders for best in the United States?"
    Dined on 2/11/2014
  • "I am hardly an expert critic, I rate a restaurant according to how happy I am when I leave. And I was very, very happy when we left Chef Mavro. We had the fixed menu with wine pairing and every course was beautiful to look at, delicious and perfectly paired. I gave this the highest rating because the service tipped the experience from very good to outstanding. The only small criticism I have was we felt a bit cramped. We were on the upper level and there was a couple seated right behind us. I wonder how they felt looking at our backs all night. Otherwise, beautiful experience."

  • "Can't get much better than this on Oahu...well, there's only one other AAA 5-Diamond on the island (La Mer) and Chef Mavro used to rock that place too! Three of us took the plunge into the Grand Degustation and what a grand experience it is...let alone that we synced it with the truffle menu and the salt-crusted Onaga. Be prepared to invest 4+ hours to get the full Monty of 11 courses (14 really if you count the in-betweens), so make your reservation on the early side of 6-9. Staff all around is outstanding and if you are there on a night with Chef you may get to have a great chat with both he and his wife, Donna. The evening is no small investment, but worth it all for the best cuisine creations you'll find."

  • "The tasting menu was quite good, but not great. The flavors of many of the key items got lost in the other ingredients. However, the presentations were spectacular. It was still a fun time to be had."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful 6 course birthday dinner at Chef Mavro! The truffled poached egg was sublime! WOW! We did not leave a drop of the potato mousse with Serrano ham! Other favorites...the lobster and lamb as both were prepared perfectly with vibrant sides of vegetables..fresh corn with one and peppery watercress with an aioli on the other. The feta cheese course was incredible. The wine pairing and service were spot on. It was the best birthday...delicious in every way and memorable."

  • "Great dining experience. We were able to meet chef Mavro in person. The food was impeccable and delicious. The wine pairing was superb. The chef also made a small cake for my wife's birthday which was really nice surprise. Overall A+++"

  • "This is our second time dining at Chef Mavro's. It was our anniversary and we let them know that fact. Once again, the food, the service, everything was perfect. We sent back our plates all empty. We both particularly enjoyed the appetizer - scallops 3 ways. My wife and I both are not really into scallops, but this dish was so delicious we finished all our scallops. Chef came out and personally served us the fish dish. We felt so honored. Also notable is the lilikoi creamsicle dessert. This is the first time I had it (last time I had the chocolate), and I absolutely love it. Because it was our anniversary, they sent us a slice of cake. Thank you Chef Mavro's, it really made our anniversary a special one."

  • "Found the service outstanding. The food was good although personally I didn't like all of the items served. (Note, my dining partners liked each and every dish. And one was a teenager!) Atmosphere and presentation, excellent."

  • "Great for gourmands! We've dined at Joel Robuchons and Guy Savoy and Chef Mavro is definitely in the same league! Excellent cuisine and service."

  • "If you're a serious foodie and have been wondering where the truly good food is in Oahu, the only place to get your foodie fix is at Chef Mavro. The wine selection is decent as well although it is arguable if they're pairing and wines available are adequate. It's a matter of personal preference but unfortunately the selection is limited. Definitely does not give justice to the outstanding food Chef Mavro painstakingly prepares each day using as much fresh local ingredients each day."

  • "First time at Chef Marvo. Made reservations four days prior, received a call from Donna confirming time and one diner's special gluten free request. Menu was sent by email for review upon request. On arrival was greeted by parking attendant then Donna at the door. We were early but seated immediately. Decorations at tables for New Year's Eve was festive. We were given New Year's party favors which we could wear if we chose to. Service was impeccable. Wine pairing excellent. Food outstanding. Neighboring diners were friendly but not intrusive. We could easily strike up conversations. This is a high end restaurant, not for everyone. Expectations and fellow diner experiences may differ. Attention to details made this dining a pleasure."
