  • Perfection, as always

Perfection is the only way to describe Chef Joseph's. As soon as you walk in, the ambiance is perfect - historic building and decor, rich colors with lots of natural wood, live music on the piano played softly. Most of the time, proprietor John is right there to greet and seat guests as soon as they walk through the door. Then the wait staff promptly and politely introduce themselves, explain the evening's specials, and take drink orders (the hand-crafted drinks are perfect as well). The menu is a perfect blend of unique, classy, and elegant dishes. Simple enough to be a single-page menu, but with a wide range of choices for all aspects of the meal - vegetarian, chicken, beef, duck, lamb, seafood. The food itself is second to none. The plate presentation is beautiful. The flavors are amazing. The portion sizes are on target. The first, last, and every bite in between is perfect. Not to mention on multiple occasions, Chef Joseph has hand-delivered the meals to our table or stopped by during the meal to ask how the food tastes. Dessert follows in the same perfection as everything else. On top of everything else, they offer a variety of daily food and/or drink specials that can be found on their website or by downloading the Chef Joseph's app.

Really enjoyed the Connoisseur Room prior to our symphony performance. Food was good. The scallops were incredibly good. Nice mix of customers--wide age range, jeans to dressy. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The live music was a nice element. At times, though, it seemed a bit too loud and hearing conversation with friends was strained.

Chef Joseph's at the Connoisseur Room is one of our favorite restaurants. We especially like the ambiance. One of the owners meets you at the front of the restaurant and welcomes you. The food is very good, with a limited but frequently changing menu. Local food and drink vendors are supported. Service is both personal and efficient. The restaurant has local musical talent playing soft music to enhance your dining pleasure. The restaurant is located downtown and is an ardent supporter of the arts, offering meal discounts if you have tickets to that evening's performance.

The service was attentive without interfering in our conversation. The food (I had the scallops; he had the steak and we split the wedge salad) was fantastic. Because it was my birthday, we shared the warm chocolate brownie with berries and whipped cream that was recommended by our server. It also was terrific. We were headed to the theater and told our server who kept us on time-- again without rushing us. The piano player near the bar was a bit too loud but the music was so good, I really cannot complain. It was a delightful evening. I highly recommend Chef Joseph's. Great food, lovely piano music for diners, friendly staff. A pleasure!

The dessert was disappointing and I didn't care for the entree or soup. The ambiance was terrific and the service was very good. I most enjoyed the jazz harpist and the friendly, prompt server.

A friend of mine went to dinner at Chef Joseph's prior to attending a play at IRT. I made reservations on line and they had a table ready when we arrived. The staff was friendly and responsive. I ordered a wonderful wine and a ravioli dish that was outstanding! My friend opted for the soup of the day and a side salad and loved both. They were able to allow us to have an enjoyable dinner and get out to our play on time, without feeling rushed or anxious.

We are in Indy regularly to visit our daughter at college and have made a point to eat at local (non-chain) restaurants. Chef Joseph's is a great new find. The ambience is fun if you enjoy a piano bar. We sat in the main dining room and even with the piano and a singer it is quiet enough to have a conversation. The food was outstanding with quick service. If you are on a date, I would request slower service. The calamari appetizer was great - lightly battered, spicy dipping sauce and tender. We had 3 different entrees and all were delicious. The soup of the day was a white bean and sausage that I would order every time I walked in the door. We will be back.

I had a lunch meeting for work (2 people) at Chef Josephs. We arrived on the early side, so it was vrey quiet upon arrival. When other diners arrived, they also seated them by the windows, which did increase the ambient noise (but i understand that showing diners at the window is a seating plan to good "create some buzz" for others walking by. The service by Juan was outstanding and very attentive. Food was excellent and well priced considering the quality.

The food was pretty good but nothing extraordinary - lots of sauces vs letting the food "speak" for itself Restaurant is nice from the street but feels dated inside with lots of velvet Friendly and attentive service. We asked for a table away from the pianist but the maître'd insisted we stay right next to it because the music was going to be good. While he was friendly that's not what we asked for.

We dined with a friend. The singer was good but at the end of our meal it was too much sound. The food was nicely presented and good but not as good as I expected. The shrimp was a bit overdone though the dish was flavorable and I expected some type of bread which was not served with any of the entrees. Service was very good, however, so we did enjoy our meal.

Took my wife for a birthday dinner. We were seated promptly and our server was quick to take our order. The server had no knowledge of the menu and actually leaned over my shoulder to read the title of my entrée. When we asked about any sort of substitution she had to go back to the kitchen to ask. The food was good and reasonably priced. Something in the ventilation system above us was squealing like a banshee, which definitely detracted from the ambiance. Overall, the setting and the live musician set the restaurant apart from its very similar competition, but I think we would still choose Morton's or weber grill, which are similar in price with more entrée options.

Stepping into Chef Joseph's is like taking a step back in time to an old fashioned supper club complete with red carpet, plush draperies, lively bar, singer and piano player. It would be an awesome place for a cocktail and entertainment. The food was another story. Heavy-handed in every way possible. If you're trying to eat healthy and watch your waistline there is very little on the menu to help you. Even the fish was smothered in unnecessary crab and the apple/bacon slaw was mostly bacon. The kale salad side was good but odd as an accompaniment to fish. Lean the menu up a bit and I would try it again.

We stopped by for a late night dinner last week. It was our first visit to Chef Joseph's. We enjoyed our meal (beef short ribs + Devour downtown menu). The food was straightforward and presentation was nice. It was a very good value, and tasted delicious. However, the level of service is what made the night so enjoyable. We decided to have dinner at the bar, and were helped by nearly every member of the Staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to enjoying the dining room as well next time. PS - we thought the Magnificat was a surprisingly good pairing with the short ribs

Our visit was simply amazing. Everything from the ambiance to the service to the food was outstanding. When we arrived, there was a woman playing the piano and singing...somewhat like lounge music, although many were popular songs done as a rendition of lounge music. By the end of our meal, there was a stand-up bass player and dedicated singer. It added a great environment. The bar area was having a great time as well, but they weren't too loud to disturb the quiet and classy feel in the dining room. We've lived in Indianapolis and worked downtown for decades and are still scratching our heads at how we'd never found Chef Joseph's before now. We will return regularly now that we know of this terrific place!

This was our second visit to Chef J's - this time for a romantic anniversary dinner to celebrate 40 years. My wife had the Chilean Sea Bass topped with crab while I very much enjoyed braised short-ribs. The music set a wonderful background for quiet conversation and our waiter was perfect, always there when we needed something but never hovering or in the way. To top it off, the chocolate mousse and creme brulee were amazing! Take time to visit - this is a gem of a place near the circle in downtown Indy.

I visited a few days ago on Thursday night and it was their 1-year anniversary of the Broadway Sing-along. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised! Great atmosphere and the food was great! Service was a little slow though--our reservation was at 6:45 and we were seated and served drinks but our waiter didn't make it to our table for our food order til 7:05 so we had missed the 1/2 price small plate appetizers, not our fault, I felt, but he said it was after 7pm so they wouldn't be 1/2 price anymore. I had the cobb salad and the calamari and both were wonderful--I'll definitely order them again. The crowd was lively and we definitely did our share of audience participation from Broadway tunes to pop songs.
