Diner Reviews
  • "We love dining at Chef Geoff's and the food (lamb, mussels with toasted garlic baguette, dessert, warm rolls) excelled as usual, but the service was uncharacteristically bad--our waitress was MIA and would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a stretch, leaving us hunting the horizon for any likely waiter who could help with more bread, refills on water, retrieving a dropped knife.... The negligent service was the exception, not the rule, and we will return."

  • "It was great to be back outside in the warm weather again after the long winter. Always a good meal with excellent variety and every dish is always good."

  • "Your attendants were gracious and sensitive to our needs, especially for our 9 years old grandson and his choices of food. We are a family that gets together often at restaurants for laughs and talks about what we have been doing which includes relatives and friends that we haven't seen in a while."

  • "I am a regular diner at Chef Geoff's and usually enjoy my dining experience. However, this time my table was not only not available, others who arrived after we did were seated. I wrote a letter direct to Chef Geoff's about a most unsatisfactory evening."

  • "Great food, good service, lovely space for outdoor dining! Indoor dining area feels crowded, and the noise level is loud. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem."

  • "5 pm reservation turned out to be a good choice as the indoor tables soon became full. We were a group of six out o celebrate a special occasion. The food was excellant and several of us ordered the "sunset"specia", salad, main course and desert with about 3-4 items to choose from in each category. Service was a little slow due to the number of guests, but server was attentive and friendly. I would recomment this restaurant for almost any occasion."

  • "Waiter was very cordial and helpful in explaining the menu items. He did forget several requests (bread, butter, drink refills, separate checks for the two of us). Filets were cooked to satisfaction, but both the meat and mashed potatoes were much too salty! Noise level is very bad. Very difficult to have a conversation."

  • "Another very good meal at Chef Geoff's on Saturday night. The place was "jumping" even by 6:30 pm. We had another very good waiter, Derrick. I was very pleased to see that a veal dish (Bavarian style veal chop) was added for the Spring menu; it was excellent and cooked perfectly. My wife and I split the grilled artichoke for an appetizer, and it was very tasty, especially the aioli dipping sauce. For a main dish, she had the pomegranate glazed duck breast and enjoyed it very much. We were so full that instead of ordering dessert, we took home a box of the house-made chocolates; they were pretty good."

  • "In general, I always enjoy the food at this restaurant -- except for my last visit, when I ordered the fish tacos. Never again - the plate was covered with fried plantains. The service is always good, but you have to sit in the back room where it's quiet if you want to have a conversation during dinner without yelling."

  • "We have taken to calling Chef G our dining room as it simply feels like an extension of our home. That could be the result of our frequent visits, but more likely it's the warm familiar welcome from the Chef G team every time we walk through the door, combined with the great table side service. No request is a problem and it always feels like saying goodnight to family as we set off after a leisurely visit. Laughter, good food and great spirits - my idea of a perfect evening with friends."

  • "I've become a frequent visitor to Chef Geoff's since I'm a professor at AU. Afer 9 p.m. at night, I expect better service. Begging for ice tea and water refills (and begging for adequate ice in the tea.) Asking numerous people to bring condiments and reasking (with little) help. But boy, was I impressed that they delivered the two tablespoons of condiments (tops) in a silver cup on its own plate and napkin (NOT). Just bring me enough catsup/mustard for my fries. So disappointing. And a waste of money."

  • "We have a group of ten who get together every year to kick off the Nationals season. This was our first time going to Chef Geoff's, and we had a fantastic experience. They set us up in a far corner so our group could all talk and hear each other, they were very attentive with the service, food was great - we had a great time. We will definitely go back, individually as couples and again as a group."

  • "Had a gift card so admittedly didn't seek out on my own. But have driven by and heard good things. Great food. Had rack of lamb and girlfriend had crab cakes. Both were delicious. The calamari appetizer was also tasty and generously portioned. Definitely recommend"

  • "There are too many restaurants like Chef Geoff in the DC area -- every is OK but there is nothing to get excited about."

  • "Yummy salads, great tuna tartar, cheese pizza is a winner, shrimp and grits a hit. This is just a terrific neighborhood gem. My only thought is you want to request front room if that suits you more. We've been fine in back room with a much larger group, but 4 or less table tops are more 'in the mix' out front."

  • "Good food at a reasonable price. Great selection o beers on tap."

  • "I have wanted to try brunch at C.G. for years, so I made a reservation. We are frequent diners at this restaurant and, overall, we have been happy with our experiences. Today it was a different story. We were seated quickly, which was the highlight of our brunch. The food was OK. It was the service that was lacking. Blame it on the time change - we did "spring forward" last night - but our table was not set correctly, our water was never refilled, and our waiter disappeared for most of our meal, and to top it off, our coffee was luke warm which is completely unacceptable when you are ordering (and paying for) an espresso drink. Probably will not brunch here again."

  • "I arrived second, my friend had a drink. After more than 10 minutes I had to find a server to get one. We were 3 for dinner. We ordered calamari to start, 3 salads & 3 entrees. We were not brought nor offered bread. The calamari arrived at the same time as salads, I let that pass. The entrees arrived while we were still eating the salads & squid. That is absurd. I sent them back. The waiter came by and was told. He apologized. Both my friends had Moroccan Salmon and loved it; I had cafe mussels which lacked broth and were dry (I suspect a product of sitting around waiting for me to finish my salad). After the table had been cleared, someone brought bread. Things are usually much better. I will still go back."

  • "My wife and I have been to Chef Geoffs several times and always liked it. This time we both got the shrimp and grits and it was outstanding. The food was great and the service was great. We will be back."

  • "Chef Geoff's offers a wide variety of lunch menu items. You can get a whole fish, Cesaer Salad with Shrimp, grilled fish, chicken, and calamari. They have kale salads with dates and pine nuts, soups, burgers and more. Its pretty busy and there wasn't a lot of checking in by our waiter but it wasn't difficult to get his attention if we needed something. When my mother in law asked for decaf with room for milk…he steamed the milk so it would be warm. Very nice. I didn't love the tanginess of the dressing on the Kale Salad but will remember in the future to keep dressing on the side. All in all it was a good experience and I would definitely go back."

  • "We were disappointed with the tastes of the variety of dishes we tried. Food at another location (Tyson's Corner) which we used to go was superior. So we were expecting better."

  • "One of the nicest restaurants in the Washington, DC area. We consider it our neighborhood place. Food is great and great wait staff."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "Food was great as usual. wait staff was awful. our table wasn't cleared between our different courses. No one removed our empty wine glasses or bottles once they were done. It took 20 minutes to get the check after we asked 2 times. I was sad because I really like this place."

  • "We had dinner with our kids and out of town friends. Everyone enjoyed the food and drink. We were early so we enjoyed the sunset special with a 3 course meal. Half price wine on Monday night was an unexpected bonus!! The salmon on the menu and the donuts are two of our favorites. Great meal and awesome value!"

  • "The food was amazing. The drink selection was amazing. We found the restaurant through Google as we were visiting from out of town. We truly enjoyed our entire experience there. The shrimp and grits were perfect, as well as the calamari 'snack'! We will definitely come back again."

  • "This is a neighborhood spot with generally good but weak service. Despite several staff at Host desk, it is always a disorganized/inept process getting seated. Servers, who seem to change every few weeks, are always very pleasant but need more training."

  • "We went here for Valentines Day with our 10 & 7 yr old girls. We were seated in the back room, which is much less noisy than the front room. I think they sat all the families back here, but that was fine! There is some weird air blowing thing going on - but it wasn't terrible. Our server was great at making suggestions and they had a kids menu with non standard kids fare - steak and salmon! I had the chicken curry and it was wonderful. Our desserts were yummy too. They didn't have many wines by the glass, but enough for us to find one we liked."

  • "We had a reservation for two on Valentine's Day and were going to a play afterwards so timely service was very important. Despite our being 10 minutes late, we were seated right away and the service was excellent from the time we received the menus to our very short wait for the bill. So Chef Geoff''s gets an A+ for service. The menu has something for everyone -- nice appetizers, a variety of salads, burgers, pastas, seafood and meat. We had the tuna tartare, which was served with wasabi mayonnaise and it was quite tasty. The lentil soup with bacon bits was a nice touch on a cold night. My partner had hamburger that was prepared exactly as ordered. Great service and good food, nicely-prepared and well presented."

  • "This restaurant is near work but I go there for the food. Their menu is always a little different and there is something new for both dinner and dessert. On two recent visits I really enjoyed the beet and cheese ravioli, the salmon with an amazing sauce with chickpeas and mango and the orange panacotta and bread pudding for dessert. All were well prepared and delicious."

  • "This restaurant really knows how to cook and serve. Our food was delicious and the service was impeccable. While not quiet, the noise level was moderate; we could talk comfortably without too much effort."

  • "Service was outstanding......never felt rushed nor neglected"

  • "Chef Geoff's will always be our favorite standby. Great restaurants in this part of the city are hard to come by, and the food, ambience and service here match anything the new foodie hotspots (Logan, H St., Petworth, etc) have to offer. If you have kids, CG's has a definite advantage: even without a reservation, they'll never tell you they can't seat you until 10:45 pm (they do take reservations, bless them), and you don't have to worry that your kids are blowing the vibe for all the 20-somethings around you! Yet there's still a hipness and energy here. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable. No fascinatingly weird food experiments here but the food is creative and always excellent. In warm weather the patio is fab. Way to go, CG!"
