Diner Reviews
  • "We were here July 3 and it was raining, so we decided to arrive an hour earlier than our reservation to avoid some of the downpours. We had no trouble being seated early. Loved the shrimp and grits and the key lime pie."

  • "Chef Geoff's Downtown is a branch of the more popular Chef Geoff's on New Mexico, in Rockville, and so forth. It is hidden on 13th Street, across from the Warner Theater. The menu consists of locally sourced and seasonally appropriate food, well prepared and served promptly. The wines, beers, and cocktails are also locally sourced, with higher quality wines available by the bottle. The service was slightly slow initially, but once our order was taken, the cocktails and food arrived promptly. The prices are appropriate for a downtown location, but not so high as to eliminate diners on a budget. I would recommend this location for groups, lunches, and those seeking to eat well without spending a fortune."

  • "I had a big urge for a turkey burger. In reviewing the menus on Open Table Chef Geoff's had one that looked amazing. We made a reservation there over other places because of that. How disappointed we were when we went to order to find out the Turkey Burgers were a seasonal item and weren't available. We were short on time so we stayed. The compromise was the turkey wrap which was quite good. My girlfriend's salad was also very good as was the service. The restaurant is definitely worth a visit but be careful as the menu shown on the Open Table site may not be what is available when you get there."

  • "I took my parents here for a nice meal when they came into town for a visit - surprised by the variety on the menu, several interesting dishes/combinations I hadn't heard of before and wasn't expecting for a place like this. It's pricey, but well-priced for the quality of food and service. Excellent service - polite, unobtrusive, and fast. Highly recommend."

  • "We dine here frequently and really love the food. Shrimp amd grits is always a winning choice!"

  • "There was an active happy hour group, but they seated us awaybfrommthe noise. We visit this restaurant whenever we are in town, and we really enjoy it. This time was no exception."

  • "My guest was late (she had to take Metrorail to our lunch). The staff were very considerate and found us a window table for our lunch. We were made to feel welcome and will return soon."

  • "I've been there several times for office gatherings. Although the menu has a great variety of plates, the food is sub par."

  • "We were seated promptly in the area with a lot of windows with great natural lighting...the appetizers were great. Salads were perfect, though dressing choices were limited. Our server was very friendly and accommodating."

  • "I made a reservation through Open Table. When I checked in with the reception, they did not have my reservation, but seated my party as they were not busy that Sunday. When another of my party came, the receptionist told her that we were there but had already come and gone. Which I found rather strange as the receptionist seated us about 20 mins before. The dish I ordered ended up being something else, and there seemed to be a lot of confusion that evening."

  • "My friend and I decided to try Chef Geoff's before our show at the Warner Theatre. There were so many things on the menu that looks great, it was hard to decide what to order. We ended up with the truffle popcorn as a starter, then had the beet and goat cheese ravioli, followed by the Pad Thai. We finished with the cinnamon doughnuts with three dipping sauces. Everything was wonderful. Our server was super attentive and very personable. We enjoyed it so much, we are planning a return visit soon!"

  • "We went here before a show at the Warner. Great rainbow trout, steak fries superb. Key lime and pineapple cake to die for! Good Pinot Grigio. Will come again and recommend to friends."

  • "The food was good, energetic crowd prior to attending theatre events and happy close to the theatres."

  • "Delicious meal - 2 of us had the steak, frites & arugula salad. Delicious. And 2 had the sesame tuna - also a big hit. Only negative was waiting for 30 minutes with a reservation."

  • "I read reviews before I went and they were all true. The service was amazing. The food was so so yummy and arrived at the so fast. I will be returning!"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "I have only had the salads and burgers. Nothing remarkable but they are fresh and well done. I understand that they are changing the menu this week. It will be interesting how dramatic the changes are. Wait staff pleasant but not overly friendly. And I consider myself a good tipper."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "Might have hit it at the wrong time, there was a show across the street and the place was absolutely packed with very loud, rather rude people. Despite that the service was perfect, the food well plated, and we never felt rushed. Grab a table by the windows for some great people watching."

  • "Either take the steak off the menu or make it better! Your fish is outstanding, most of your other dishes are simply great, but the steak was disappointing for my carnivore husband."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "Good food and had a more sophisticated menu for the kids, including a salmon that my daughter enjoyed."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "My kids were excited to return to Chef Geoff's for lunch on Sunday after visiting for dinner a few months prior. How disappointed were we all to find ONE lunch item (grilled cheese) on the kids menu for our noon lunch!? C'mon -- people with kids have been up for HOURS on a Sunday (ours slept in until 715am that day!) and are no longer interested in just breakfast options. We asked about a hamburger at least (since they were on the adult menu) and the waiter hemmed and hawed and finally offered to ask in the kitchen! They said they would do it but by that time one kid warmed up to the idea of a grilled cheese (he only ended up eating half and wasn't happy with the sweet potato fries) and the other kid split the steak and eggs with my husband"

  • "1st time visit. Service started out great, then he seemed to forget us. It was nice, but it would have been nicer if they had turned the air conditioner. Food was great. Worth a 2nd visit. Hope the service will be better (need more wait staff). If not, we won't be back, and we won't recommend it to our friends/family."

  • "Food was flavorful, service was attentive without being overbearing, and the location is great for those of us who spent the day "playing tour-guide" on the National Mall. 1 pizza plus two individual salads was the perfect amount of food for two hungry women."

  • "My husband and I had dinner here on Friday night and it was great! We visited based on proximity to the Warner theatre and a recommendation from a friend. The food was great, the staff was accommodating, attentive and friendly. We were looking for something low key with great food and we were pleased. Portions were a bit big but over all I would highly recommend Chef Geoff's to fiends ."

  • "The food was fantastic, especially the shrimp and grits. Thank you!"

  • "Our party had a tasty risotto, lamb samosas with fresh sauces, a perfect hamburger for our teen, and nicely prepared fish tacos. An eclectic menu and all prepared well."

  • "We ate early, 4:30 PM on Tuesday. Our daughter was graduating from high school at DAR Constitution Hall about a mile away. It was fairly empty but getting more crowded as we left. could easily handle larger parties. Food and service were great. Favorites at the table were shrimp and cheese grits and the donut dessert dish."

  • "Chef Geoff's is always a great place for lunch. The food is good and so is the service."

  • "Went here for brunch on Father's Day (not *for* Father's Day, that just happened to be the day we visited). The food was very good, especially the hanger steak special which I had. Service was generally good and attentive, although my wife had to send back her food after they brought her the wrong order. Atmosphere was fine, though I think in retrospect I would rather have sat inside than out on the enclosed patio, which was a little noisier with kids than I think the main dining area would have been."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Our meal was superb, and the restaurant was quite attentive to our request to reduce the sound level of the music, which made talking possible. On the down side is the lack of street parking[--even on a Sunday morning--and the expensive garages in the neighborhood."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "went there on Sunday. Was disappointed that the lunch menu was not being served though they gave us the lunch menu along with the brunch menu. Limited choices on the brunch menu. Though the quantity was large, the food quality was so so... nothing special. Barbecue sauce on the pork belly was way too sweet."

  • "Everything from service to the meal was fantastic. We will be back. Thank you."

  • "A classic example of a chef having more than one place, spreading himself too thin so the result is mediocre food and service. To start, bread was stale and busboy was in a rush to clear our plates when I still had bread in my hand. Plus he clearly didn't understand English. My artichoke and spring pea risotto was delicious but it was missing artichoke. When I pointed out to the waiter he went to the kitchen and brought me a plate of chopped artichoke. Nice gesture except it was all the tough and chewy parts that no one should eat. I feel like if the owner was present more he would be able to correct these things. Plus we sat in the patio and ceiling fans were covered in dust and chair rails were also dusty. A total turnoff if or me."

  • "Fantastic service. New server - male- from Texas. Just moved to DC."

  • "Terrific again! Second visit in a month and everything was outstanding. The calamari is definitely the best I've ever had. Light, crisp and very fresh with not one but 3 dipping sauces. Rockfish was perfect with a bit of nice crisp skin and lamb kofta was moist and not over spiced Ready to go back and try the rest of the menu"

  • "I really enjoyed my dining experience with Chef Geoff's. The food was outstanding; (I had the seared scallops and my partner had the rock fish), the drinks were on par (I had red wine and my partner had martinis) and the seating very comfortable. However, one word of caution, if you are looking for a quiet dinner between the hours of 6-7:30pm, this may not be the place for you to dine out. It has a very active bar and loud, but vibrant and lively. I would definitely dine here again."

  • "I went here with a friend before a show and we had plenty of time but the food came out super quick. They had good mixed drinks and big beers."

  • "The entrance to this business is on 13th Street not Pennsylvania Ave. Don't expect to see the restaurant while driving on Pennsylvania Ave...you'll never find it. We arrived during happy hour and our table was near the bar. Way too loud to enjoy dinner. Server used her "outside" voice to inform us that happy hour ended at 7pm so it might calm down. She was correct, the loud crowd left by 7:15pm. I would never make reservations for this place prior to 7:15pm"

  • "Chef Geoff's Downtown is a good choice if you're looking for something downtown, convenient to the Metro, and more upscale than pub food. The service is very good, perhaps because they are geared to theater-goers (The Warner is across the street). The menu seemed to be trying a little too hard to be trendy--almost every item has something a little odd in in it, such as plantain in the pork tenderloin. I can't say that I was overwhelmed by items I wanted to try, although I didn't have trouble finding something I liked. There is a good selection of beer. The sound level is in the "must speak with raised voice" range and perhaps a little above that."

  • "Attend an event at the Warner Theatre. The restaurant made sure theatre patrons were out in time for the show. The food and service was good. The bar area was crowded. Excellent location."

  • "The meal was served very quickly and tasted as if it had been under the warming lights a while. The place was very noisy. The bread triangles on my Mediterranean dish were tough and tasteless."
