A word from Chef and The Farmer
Go to nowhere and turn left...you'll discover an extraordinary, epicurean experience where Chef Vivian Howard practices culinary artistry in a place steeped in tradition. Vivian has returned to her southern roots to create Chef and the Farmer. It celebrates simplicity, freshness and its own heritage.

Anchored in a building that has meant much to a small community where Vivian was raised, she and partner Ben Knight converted a 100 year old mule stable into a warm, inviting, uniquely modern atmosphere. Chef and Farmer, like its name, blends the old and the new, seamlessly, comfortably and unforgettably.

Food was very good! First time we visited this establishment. Noise level made it difficult to communicate. Concrete floor, tin roof and hard walls enables high noise levels and makes communicating across the table with your dinner partner very difficult. Before I go back, I will ensure I had a better seating location which enabled us to communicate more comfortably.

Drove from Charlotte to Kinston, 4+ hours, to eat at both the Boiler Room and the Chef and the Farmer. Loved them both. Great Oysters Rockefellar at the BR! And great Fried Green Tomatoes and pork belly topped salad at Chef & the Farmer. Will definitely be back.

Our first visit to Chef and The Farmer. We were not disappointed! We introduced ourselves to the couple beside us and shared a few bites of appetizers with them. It was fun to taste four different starters. The fried collards melted in your mouth, the grits/cheese/apples was delicious and my favorite was pork belly skewers which were incredibly delicious. I chose the red drum as an entrée and ate it with a spoon to enjoy all the delicious broth. My husband ordered the beef which I did not taste. Loved the informal, congenial atmosphere. We will be back. We shared a coconut lemon curd dessert. We also discovered the Bentley B&B and had a marvelous breakfast the following morning!

Our dining experience was wonderful. From our welcome as we entered to our departure, the service was impeccable. Our appetizer, entrees and desserts were generous in portion and were delicious. We drove from Emerald Isle about an hour and fifteen minutes but the drive was worth the experience and we are already planning our next trip.

We were very pleased with the unusual (and outstanding) meal we had. The vegetables were so freshly prepared they melted in the mouth. We were celebrating two birthdays and couldn't have had a more joyous food experience. The best strategy is to bring a larger group so that you can share the various dishes and get more appreciation for the breadth of the menu.

Unrivaled food and service! Here's a gem of New York styling and expertise in the country. The staff has been flawlessly trained so service is incredible from the moment you enter until you leave! Chef Vivian from "A Chef's Life" (PBS) has melded southern classics with modern culinary skills and made something utterly unique in this small North Carolina county! We drove 3.5 hours from the Outer Banks and we won't hesitate to visit again and again to enjoy the farm-to-table seasonal dishes! Ambiance is open, fresh & not stuffy at all! All I can say is to GO! Make this your next dining destination!

We recently returned to this wonderful restaurant inspired by the weekly TV shows by Chef Vivian. Kingston is not near our home on the NC coast, but again, the drive was worth the awesome food we had. As always, we ordered fried collars, a must in my opinion, but in addition, this time we were in owe by two new dishes: the peaches with ham and the best piece of fish I have had in years: drum (I had heard of it but not seen it in any restaurant menu) in a fantastic spice crust -- almost crunchy on the outside and white and firm on the inside. For dessert: muscadine cobbler. Try it.

We loved our entree of Pimento cheese grits. It was delicious and ample. Next time will try some desserts as they were tempting. Enjoyed our Mother Earth Beer. Appreciate the fact that the local brewery is offered in the restaurant. The interior decor is attractive and classy. Would like to return again and try the tomato pie.

Food was phenomenal. Service was good and wait staff very friendly. We had probably one of the latest dinner slots - 9:30, so they were out of 1 or 2 entrees, but what we ordered was incredible, tasty, unique. The fried okra with ranch icecream was a perfect combo of textures and flavors, and our entrees - tomato pie and trout, were delicious. I highly recommmend this place.

The food gets the four stars. It was as good as I hoped it would be. I wish I could have had a taste of everything on the menu. The ambience gets two stars. The place was packed on a Saturday night. Staff appeared stressed rushing around trying to keep up. This perception was probably due to our seating back by the the kitchen door. It was a constant flurry of staff rushing past our table all through our meal. The noise level was was extreme at some points during the evening. Not a relaxing evening. Maybe a weeknight would have been better.

Chef and the Farmer was the perfect setting for celebrating two birthdays. We brought friends with us for their first dining experience here. Our server was friendly and helpful as we selected our courses. Fried green tomatoes and fried okra treated our taste buds in their unique presentations. Main courses of trout and the pork chop were moist, perfectly seasoned, delicious and disappeared.

Chef and the Farmer is a gem in southeastern NC. The food is absolutely spectacular. I sampled 9 different dishes, including appetizers and desserts, and everything was phenomenal! I can't begin to describe the sensation of eating chipolte ice cream...ice cream that heats your mouth like pepper..just amazing! Staff is absolutely professional. We had a main waitress whom of which was well versed in the menu and offered intelligent suggestions, one waitress that specifically refilled water and one that made sure your napkin was perfectly folded on your chair should you leave to visit the restroom. The atmosphere is very low key and classy. Vivian Howard's restaurant definitely made an impression and I will be visiting again!!

From the moment you walk through the door to the moment you leave, it is a sensory experience. From hostess to servers to a knowlegable (and entertaining) sommelier, the food and wine parings met every expectation. Having seen A Chef's Life on PBS, it was our goal to visit while traveling in Eastern NC. Vivian Howard's food and presentation is amazing and the flavors (the novice would never imagine) she combines to engage ones taste buds are just amazing from richly steeped blueberrys to roasted figs. If you have not made the trip to Chef and The Farmer - you MUST! We "pre-gamed" across the way in the Boiler Room which is equally inviting and lively. Just a great experience all the way around!

I have been going to Kinston on business for 8 years and have enjoyed this restaurant for a number of years. There is no place better for amazing fresh food. I had the squash pizza for an appetizer and it was a perfect balance of flavors including the smoky taste from the wood fired oven. Then tomato pie that was out of this world and dessert that was a perfect blend of sweet, savory and salty. Look forward to going back next year!

We stopped at Chef and the Farmer on our way home to Raleigh from the beach. We had never been to a restaurant with such attentive service or so many employees waiting to serve! It was a Wednesday evening. We shared the Chips and Dip appetizer and were bowled over by the flavors. We also shared the fabulous tomato pie with charred summer vegetables and the pimento cheese grits. At first bite, I knew we were in the presence of greatness. The complexity of flavors and textures was really a treat. Because we were driving home, we didn't sample the wine or other beverages and we passed up the dessert menu too so we could get back on the road. Next time!

We were seated immediately even though we were a little early and it seemed like the place was packed. Our table was at the window looking into the kitchen, which we liked as we do like to see how things run. The flash fried collards were delicious - chopped a little too small to be easy to eat like chips as were told to but very tasty. The pork belly skewers were perfect. Steak was perfectly cooked, the trout was whole fish and superb. The sides were a perfect match to the proteins. Dessert was just as delicious as dinner! Drinks were a little pricey but very well made. Superior service. Our servers were very knowledgeable about the menu and had very helpful suggestions. Would definitely go again to try different menu items.

The chicken with goat cheese and farro and sweet potatoes was absolutely delicious!! It was like Thanksgiving in a bite. I wish I had ordered it also like my husband did. I had the trout dish and was disappointed. I didn't realize there would be so many bones, but in addition to that, I did not like the taste or texture of the panzanella. The roasted okra was fine, but overall, the dish was very disappointing. The muscadine grape cobbler with goat cheese ice cream was fabulous! We really enjoyed the pork belly/gouda pizza, but would have liked the crust to be more crisp- we would definitely order it again though. The grits and beef were also delicious. We will be back again next month.

Chef and the Farmer is well worth the wait. The service was above and beyond. We thoroughly enjoyed all four courses, especially with the recommended glasses of wine/port to pair. We will note that the ambiance was a bit disrupted due to our table neighbors who were 'enjoying themselves' to the point where everyone around them noticed. Other than that we loved our experience and can't wait for our next visit.

Interesting menu; dishes impeccably prepared. Timing was good, service practically perfect. We made one mistake; when given the option to choose chilled and filtered tap water or select a bottled water, we chose the filtered tap. It wasn't horrible, but next time we will choose a bottled mineral water. There was a taste of old pipes about the chilled tap, in spite of the filtration. That was the evening's shortcoming. They did a great job and we thoroughly enjoyed the seating by the window overlooking the kitchen.

The food was very good. The wait staff was attentive, but not overbearing. Lots of inventive combinations of flavors from local produce. We liked especially the blueberry sauce with both the benne fried green tomatoes and the current chicken entree. We loved the breads and the egg salad with a hint of curry. Save room for dessert- the tres leche with peaches was superb! It is well-worth the trip to Kinston, NC to discover the new combinations of flavors the chef devises each week. The extra special treat is that chef Vivian Howard is on site and steps out of the kitchen to meet patrons and visit the tables periodically.

The food was very interesting and well prepared, the service was excellent, and the decor was very nice. The restaurant is definitely fit for foodies, food items had complex flavors and the presentation was excellent. We enjoyed trying the fried collard greens, they were good, interesting, even though a little greasy and too salty. The pear preserves were excellent. The fried whole okra was good. The pork chop was excellent and very large. The tomato pie was very intense with flavor, though a little small. We tried three desserts and all were good, especially the fig cobbler. Service was excellent, attentive, and friendly. Noise level was a little high.

Since we had watched and loved their PBS show, we decided to stop off at Chef and the Farmer on our way from Durham, NC to the coast. What an amazing gem in the middle of eastern NC! We loved everything we ate. Innovated combinations of fresh, seasonal ingredients, all cooked to perfection. The tomato pie was the best I've ever tasted, with the flakiest, most delicious crust ever created! Honestly. The pork chop was juicy and flavorful, topped with a jalapeño/peach glaze, containing just the right amount of heat. With so many enticing offerings to explore, we will definitely make a point of stopping there again on the way to the beach. Just wish it wasn't 2 hours from our home!

My wife and I live in Durham. We were very knowledgeable about the restaurant from UNC TV show and many other articles that have been written about it. We finally got reservations and made an overnight trip to Kinston. We had great fun. Kinston was really fun with the Brewery, old southern downtown that reminded me of the small NC community I was raised in. We cannot wait to get back and enjoy the area and the Neuse River some more. The restaurant was fabulous. Great food and superb service.

Everything was right - from the friendliness of the bar staff to the knowledge and friendly attentiveness we got from the waitresses. The restaurant itself is beautiful, greatly enhanced by the artwork. A super wine list - the wine we enjoyed - recommended by the bar staff - was right on for the food we had. We started out with the fried green tomato appetizer which was bedded in a blueberry chutney - the combination was amazing. We also enjoyed their bread plate which came with pear preserves and salted butter. For the entrees, we thoroughly enjoyed the blueberry BBQ glazed chicken and the rice crusted catfish. All in all, this is the best dining experience we had in many, many years.

As usual, service is excellent and the food is mostly delicious. Their fish tartare used to be fantastic but is now so-so with stale sweet potato chips. Since the restaurant has gained acclaim, their small plate and shared plate portions have gotten much smaller, all the while prices have increased quite a bit on all food/beverages. Noise level made it hard to hear fellow diners at the same table. The noise level was discordant, jarring, detracted from the experience.

There were 4 of us who were there on a Thursday night - it seemed really busy but the staff said it was actually a slow night. The noise level is an issue- hard to hear the person across from you with all of the noise from the other tables. The table lights are pretty but whew- I did not like the aroma from them. Staff was hugely helpful in guiding us through the menu. We had to have the fried collards and would get again - loved the tomato pie and the veggies. Serving for shrimp/grits was a bit shy - we would recommend sharing for 2 not 4 for most items. It was a fun night - we would definitely go again.
