Vivian has returned to her southern roots to create Chef and the Farmer. It celebrates simplicity, freshness and its own heritage.

Anchored in a building that has meant much to a small community where Vivian was raised, she and partner Ben Knight converted a 100 year old mule stable into a warm, inviting, uniquely modern atmosphere. Chef and Farmer, like its name, blends the old and the new, seamlessly, comfortably and unforgettably.

  • "My husband and I were so intrigued by "A Chef's Life" that we made a 9-hr round trip and paid for a hotel in order to dine at the restaurant. So glad we did! We were promptly seated by our accommodating hostess at the perfect table for two. We could converse easily, no problem with noise. I simply can't say enough about the food and service. The tomato pie was divine, as was the berry cobbler with basil ice cream, peaches wrapped in country ham, and for that matter, everything. Server, Mary, and her assts, James, and Scott, were outstanding. This was opposed to some other so-called high end eateries where we were left wondering if our server had left the building along with Elvis. Add CATF to your bucket list!"

  • "Food was absolutely delicious, service was outstanding, ambiance was wonderful. I will definitely return. The fried okra with the ranch ice cream was fantastic and the fried collard appetizer was to die for. We also had oyster appetizers at the Boiler Room prior to our reservation at Chef and the Farmer and the oysters were fresh and delicious. Staff there was friendly and welcoming."

  • "We've recently traveled from coast to coast by car, June, 2014, sampling the cuisine all across America. We live in North Carolina and vacationed recently in New Bern, NC. My husband loves the TV show "Chef and The Farmer". He insisted on dining there on our trip to New Bern. I made reservations the previous week and was surprised to receive an email and telephone confirmation. We were very pleased with the food and the rustic atmosphere. The volume of conversation was a bit loud making it hard to have a conversation without elevating our voices. However, the food excelled the cuisine I have sampled in France and Belgium. Far superior! My husband announced during dinner, "I've found a NEW favorite restaurant"! Chef and The Farmer!!"

  • "We had such high expectations for Chef and The Farmer, but the restaurant did not quite live up to them. We had the bourbon pork lasagna and the grouper. My husband found the pork to be prepared too sweetly, but I thought it was excellent. The portion of grouper was very small and was not filling, but the flavors were fresh and good. The best thing we had were the fried collards--out of this world amazing! We tried the berry cobbler and chocolate mousse for dessert. Berry cobbler was good, not great. We didn't like that the mousse had chunks in it. We got our appetizer quickly but waited a very long time for our entrees. The noise level makes it difficult to hear. We would go back and try different entrees."

  • "My son, daughter and I had the opportunity to experience Chef and the Farmer on a recent trip to the NC coast. Definitely a one of a kind splurge experience! The menu was unique and everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend a visit here and don't forget to try the double chocolate mousse dessert!"

  • "A wonderful evening with a tasty and varied local meal, well-prepared, well-seasoned and delicious! Attentive and pleasant staff. We arrived early for our reservation, sat at the bar area while we waited, and looked over the evening's menu. There is not a single item on this menu we would not choose, which makes it all the more difficult. We asked if there was seating at the kitchen bar. Luckily the last two seats by the oven and the plating/order pickup opened up right at our reservation time. What a night--a wonderful meal *and* a floor show! We sat and watched the line cooks, the wood-fired oven and pizza-making, and everything that came out of the kitchen as it was plated."

We had great conversations with both locals and travelers who either made a special trip or a detour to eat at Chef and The Farmer. It is worth going out of your way to eat here."

The food is so delicious and well prepared at this restaurant. The berry cobbler with basil ice cream married fresh blueberries and blackberries, buttery pastry, and a complement of basil. Loved it."

It was as if it was a place for celebration - possibly because of the open bar - as spirits are consumed people tend to get louder with time.   • "Food, service, wine, all wonderful, as I expected! I sat at the kitchen bar overlooking the kitchen staff cooking diligently. Server was attentive and suggested the perfect white wine, not too dry or sweet. She brought a Spanish wine, just as I described. I had blueberry BBQ pork belly skewers that melted in my mouth and rice crusted catfish, which I would not usually order, but server said it was awesome and it was. Catfish was served with blue crab, corn puree and summer veggies. Delish! Didn't save room for dessert, but looked over the dessert menu and wished I could have tried something. Will definitely make the 25 minute drive to Kinston next time I'm working in the area."

My husband and I were celebrating our one year anniversary and every single staff member that we interacted with, wished us a 'Happy Anniversary'. It was a wonderful touch that made us feel extra special. We were lucky enough to be staying at the B&B of supplying Farmer; Warren Brothers, making the farm-to-table experience that much more tangible. Everything we ate was delicious, beautifully presented, fresh, and perfectly prepared. Our table overlooked the kitchen where we watched each cook craft their 'art' with equal passion from the time were seated to way beyond the time we left. Though a little loud, we were wowed. Highly recommended!"

  • "Our daughter gave us a gift certificate for our 42nd Anniversary to the Chef & the Farmer. First of all my husband had to stare at the wall all night & we were too close to the people on the sides of us. The noise level was unreal, it was impossible to talk to each other without shouting. We ordered an appetizer that was really tasty but it was suppose to have 6 skewers & we only got 5. I ordered the shrimp & grits...it was such a small potion with soupy grits & only 4 shrimp & it was lukewarm at best. My husband had the steak & it was very good. We were there 2 hours...everything was slow. Also by 7:30pm they were already out of 3 things on the menu. I'm really proud of all this Lenoir County Native has done but was very disappointed."

  • "I knew to expect a limited menu and that most if not all of the food is locally grown. That was the extent of my knowledge of this restaurant prior to dining here. We arrived early for our reservation and they were able to seat us sooner which was a pleasant surprise. The food was what I expected - unique pairings. The service was completely confusing - we must have had at least 4 different servers during the course of our meal (and we didn't have appetizers or dessert). I still don't know who our actual server was - there was a different person for taking our order, another person for bringing our food, another person for checking during our meal, another person for refilling our drinks, CHAOS!!!!"
