  • "The food was good, not great. For the prices, I would expect great. My big peeve was the small portions at such high prices. From the appetizers to the entree (petrale sole and blackened cod) to the dessert, the servings were so tiny. I felt that I needed to stop by McDonalds and get a burger afterwards. The service was spotty; it took long time before ordering to when we got our food and drinks. The entire dinner took 2 1/2 hours and we are not slow eaters."

  • "We had dinner reservation for 3, 2 of us got there first my other gf was 8min away. The hostess would not seat us til she got there. They asked us to sit at the bar when there were no seats available, plus we don't drink and the bar was very noisy. So we just stood there by the door. Again, after 5min of standing there I told the hostess that my gf is about to arrive in 3min if we can sit order water and appetizer? Once again hostess refused to seat us while the manager is just standing behind her looking at us and not doing or saying anything. I understand restaurants don't like to seat ppl when the whole party is not there, but 2 outta 3 guest were there it was on a wed night not so busy, there were open tables every where"

  • "Six of us ate at Chaya Brasserie last Saturday night. The service was excellent, but we felt the food left a lot to be desired. My dumpling appetizer was lukewarm, with a nondescript sauce. While the chowder was excellent, the salads were ordinary. Main courses tended to have unimaginative sauces (black cod and lamb shank), while the tuna roll was just dry. We all eat out a lot and have no trouble paying top prices for great food. In this case, we ended up walking away thinking we had paid a lot for an ordinary meal."

  • "Saw good reviews so we took a chance on Chaya. Food was the best. Tuna stuffed with crab not only delicious, but imaginative and artistically presented. Liked the crunchy crust. Black cod cooked perfectly, buttery consistency. Salmon and risotto also delicious. All wait staff were efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable. Wine good, too. Our favorite dessert surprisingly was chocolate croissant bread pudding, even better than the cute, tiny ice cream sandwiches. The only thing we didn't like was our table. Not enough space between ours and the others, which detracted from the dining experience. Waiter kicked purse on the floor. Expensive but memorable, so worth the money."

  • "I don't know if it's because we looked young, or because I have disheveled hair, or any other number of things, but our waiter didn't seem all that interested in selling us food and drinks. I don't want a waiter that talks my ear off, by any means, but if I ask for a suggestion, or help picking out a sake, especially at a restaurant like this, I do expect my waiter to have helpful feedback, to have tasted the food, to know more than the average joe about the spirit list. If our waiter knew the food and spirit list, he certainly wasn't sharing that information with us. That said, the food was wonderful and the view of the bay bridge at night, especially with all those lights on it was super romantic. It might help if you look rich though"

  • "I reserved and requested a table with a view of the Bay Bridge. We arrived early, had a drink at the bar, and were lucky enough to find a table. When we were shown to our table which wasn't a window seat, but close enough so that our guests could sit and have a view of the bridge. It was loud but as the restaurant began to thin out, we could speak in normal voices. It took a while for the waitperson to take our order. I had the clam chowder which was about the best chowder I've ever had. The sushi and sashimi was excellent. Good taste, texture, and presentation. We did have bread pudding which is with a croissant and bits of chocolate. OUTSTANDING! I would definitely return. We ordered no wine. Total bill was about $225."

  • "While Chaya has been a date night favorite of ours since moving to the Bay Area, the chef inexplicably decided to change the menu to limit diner choice , particularly in the sushi roles selection, which used to be one of the primary reasons , in addition to location and ambience , why my wife and I ate there more than any other restaurant downtown. Not sure why limiting diner choice will be a successful strategy but we will not automatically choose Chaya as our go-to date night spot. We will have to see what the chef chooses to offer us before going there again."

  • "We ordered sushi, duck and a salmon. I had the salmon, which was very moist, and complementary risotto had a nice balance of creaminess and tanginess. Overall, food was flavorful and portion was filling. Rose wine I had by the glass was one of the worst I've had at a restaurant. It was served too cold; it tasted as if it lost all its original flavor and came out from few days old bottle that was left open. The overall service was good, but we didn't have a great experience with our waitress. After the mains, the waitress just came and left the dessert menu on the table without a word. We felt this was queer, and agreed that we've never had this situation before, not at a place within Chaya's price range. It is courteous to at least ask!"

  • "After having to wait about 20 minutes from our 10:15pm time, the service and food didn't disappoint. They had a special 3 course tasting menu with some nice choices. The first courses were good, and the main course was even better. Fish is the way to go, with some unique preps. Deserts were good, though the cheese course wasn't anything spectacular."

  • "I made reservations for two to celebrate a birthday. I wrote in the reservation that we were there for a birthday, and I chose Chaya specifically because of their birthday desserts. Upon arriving, the host and hostess were great! They were high-spirited and kind. Our waiter was not so great. He wasn't nice. He seemed snobby! He neglected us and NEVER replenished our drinks, and surprise! Zero birthday acknowledgement. No birthday dessert. There was a table across the room being taken care of for a birthday, but not us. Really disappointing, especially since the waiter was so sour. Two stars for service when I definitely would have given five since the rest of the waitstaff really was outstanding! We had bad luck with the grouchy waiter."

  • "When I got a reminder call I didn't to like then guy. Than when we got there the guy told host seat us right by the door which the wind would blow right by us every tine people comes in so I ask for another table. When I was there few years ago the service was good now these people have attitude and don't have positive energy to serve customers. It would be nice if they change the whole staff of employee. The food is ok and the drinks are ok. They just need to change people that works there!"

Service was pleasant and engaging--even though we were three 60ish women ( many reviews seem to address people like us being treated poorly ). We had several rolls, filet mignon, duck and cod. The dumplings were so good we had them for dessert as well. Such a pleasant evening- a reminder of why we live in the Bay area"

  • "Chaya Rocks! I needed a place to take visiting In-laws that offered a variety of food, nice wine list and good vibe. Chaya is located right on the Embarcadero, I pulled up and use Valet for only $12. Went inside and found my In-laws at the very nice bar having a pre-meal drink. When everyone arrived we were seated at one of the fantastic front tables with a terrific view of the light display on the bay bridge. Awesome! The food was terrific. Great portion sizes of Californian-Asian fusion. Seasoned just right. Fish was incredibly fresh. Service was paced and perfect. Deserts were unique. The overall experience was worth the $$$!"

  • "OK, the restaurant is "hot." We, however, showed up @7:35 for a 7:30 reservation and were told that they were so busy our table for 5 had already been given away. An empty table for 5 however was only 20 feet away. We informed the host that our fifth person was hung up in a business meeting and would not be joining us and asked to seat the four of us. We were told that we could NOT sit at our reserved table for 5 and that no tables for 4 were available, but that we could wait in the bar. So we waited in the bar for an HOUR... Meanwhile the empty table for 5 remained empty... for an HOUR... The host never checked on us and we only got a table at 9:30 when the restaurant was emptying out... so they get a ONE STAR from us."
