  • Great HH, Terrible Lunch

I recommended this restaurant for a company birthday lunch, because I always go to the bar in the evenings. My experience at the bar is always very positive - great bartenders, exceptional service, lively ambiance, etc. The company lunch was the polar opposite. There were 3 other smaller tables at the time. After ordering, our server disappeared for 30 mins and did not tell us our plates would be late until my boss inquired about the food. Tortas for 7 people took over an hour. We were told the desserts would be out in 2 mins, but even boxing them took over 20 mins. We were told that the reason for the delay was a new line chef. The bar experience at happy hour and in the evening is amazing, but the lunch experience was terrible.

I wanted to like this restaurant, as a child the Crest was THE hotel in Austin and I spent a lot of time there. Right now, the restaurant looks out of place. You have to go through the rundown lobby of the hotel to get to the restaurant and they do not match at all. Interior of restaurant is really nice but food is ok on the Austin scale. I am not a fan of deconstructed dining and this restaurant tries too hard. It will be a tough road ahead. I have never been asked to give them my credit card before being served dinner. That set the mood for a bad night. There are just too many high-end restaurants ($70+ per person) in Austin to be just average. Just like Qui, they are trying too hard.

It took 30 minutes to get our food. We ordered, respectively, a burger and a salad. We were the only customers there. Our waiter, when I asked what the veggies in the salad were sauteed with, said, "I don't know. I would guess olive oil." I told him I'm counting calories and he didn't even bother to go ask in the kitchen. We were there on our lunch hour (1 hour) and barely made it back to work in time, even though we work across the street. Once our food was served, our waiter went over to the bar to hang out with the bartender. I had to wave my arms around for about half a minute before he noticed me. Had to ask for the check. The food was good. Service was ridiculously slow.

Food was good--bluepoint oysters, grouper perfectly done, small but well executed filet. Service was attentive and efficient. Especially appreciated the quietness of the place--not dead by any means but four adults could actually make conversation across a spacious booth, a rarity in Austin's current dining scene

Loved this place, despite it being in a hotel setting. The floor to ceiling windows of the river really open the place up. You feel like you are in a treehouse. The presentation of the food was photo worthy. And the quality was even better. Loved the oyster nachos, heirloom tomato salad, grouper, enchilada side dish, and steak. Will return soon.

Had a small birthday lunch. I am a big fan of Michael Hsu so somewhat picked the restaurant for the atmosphere he created. Love SW cuisine and Shawn Cirkel cuisine so knew I could not go wrong. Wanted a light lunch so picked the large heirloom tomato salad because I would be dining again for dinner latter in the day. It was beautiful and tasted fabulous but wow the portions for us all were tiny. The description on the menu of large salad was not appropriate. If the portions had not been so stingy, I would have rated 5*.

Well we were looking for a new brunch spot and we liked it we were just surprised that it was a Buffett style only. I wish we would have known ahead of time. The restaurant being in a hotel, we knew would be pricie but a Buffett style is not what we were looking for at a high cost. Service ambiance quality of food are perfect and we will visit again just not for brunch.

The Place - I have to say the restaurant looked & felt fantastic. It was open, clean and simple in a very good way. Not bold, aggressive, but very comfortable. Great deign, except for one thing, the all wooden chairs were very uncomfortable. Bad selection there! The Food - The early signs were great. Ice tea with lime (true to a real Mex. restaurant place), a great Caesar Salad (again a real Mex detail most don't view as Mexican). The Ribs appetizer was excellent, cooked perfectly and the favor light but delicious. The soup was just ok, thin on flavor and thin on substance. The entrees not so much, both entree's lacked flavor and really under delivered. The meat (pork) was not tender, the chicken (mole) was very bland.

We went to Chavez for my birthday dinner and had a great experience. Not only was our waiter attentive, the dishes we ordered were beautifully presented and there were a few unexpected twists like the butter-marinated onions that was served as a side to the beef brisket empanada. The Herb Crusted Mahi Mahi was good but the Grouper was outstanding. Portions were just right. Highly recommend the Cafe con Leche dessert which is gluten-free. Ask for a table with a lake view.

The restaurant is stunningly beautiful, in modern decor, mostly white, that still somehow manages not to be cold or intimidating. The service is the same; professional but still warm and personal. The food is, quite simply, delicious. The empanadas and sopas are excellent appetizers, as is the smoked salmon. For main courses, the blade steak al pastor can't be beat for flavor and surprising tenderness, though my husband liked his lamb mole nearly as much. This is my third time at this restaurant, and I'll be going back again. It's that good.

I held a small business dinner at this facility. They seated us next to a beautiful view of the lake, with a great view of the bats leaving late evening. Once a couple of very large parties finished dining the noise level was very expectable. I found the food very well prepared and presented. I would definitely go back again.

Ordered drinks at the bar to wait for the table. Arrived when we already were seated at the table. Disappointing blade steak: if braised it should be tender, if grilled it should not be overcooked. Rest of food ok to good (grouper, lamb). Dulce de leche without much dulce de leche, good churros de mais. Now the point: the restaurant site/menu states 18% gratuity for parties of 6. We were 6. The check arrived with a so-called "suggested" 20% gratuity already added. I requested a check without gratuity, which was obtained. "Thrown onto the table" is a better description. Nonetheless added 18%. Then we left without even eye contact with our waiter still present. Maybe a French-speaking table looks like a deer park? Been living in TX for years.

My husband and I had lunch after a wonderful hike in the morning, so the view of the lake and others walking around or paddling along was perfect for the tone of our day. Very quiet, and lovely ambiance. We were underdressed and didn't feel out of place because of it. The renovation is gorgeous, and greatly appreciated the tone of the restaurant. The dessert was our favorite part, SO delicious with a great mixture of textures and tastes. Wonderful service, with the right amount of attention! We will be back.

pros: the ambiance and decor of the restaurant was phenomenal! food was very tasty - lamb in mole and oyster tacos were both excellent! the cornbread was also a nice treat. server and managers were pleasant. cons: slowest service i have received in a long time, seriously. people in my party did not receive items that they ordered - drinks, salads, etc., when the entrees finally came, some of the food was not hot, almost cold. because of the wait, we got complimentary dessert, which was sorbet, and even that took a long time. overall: good food, good ambiance, nice staff, but they need to get it together with timing and serving large parties.

My group of six international business colleagues had an excellent experience at Chavez. I had wanted to find a restaurant that would provide a representative southwestern experience and Chavez really came through. Our meals were outstanding; the Mahi Mahi and salmon was fresh, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully, and the steaks were tender and cooked to the requested temperature. One of my colleagues is a vegetarian and the chef prepared a sumptuous array of beautifully-cooked fresh vegetables. My colleague was very pleased. However, our server pointed out that there were a number of vegetarian options on the menu. Service was prompt, attentive, but not intrusive. And the view over the river was splendid. We were all delighted.

This was our second time having dinner here and it was just as great as the first time. Don't know why The Statesman gave it a negative write up a few months ago, but we never pay attention to any of their reviews. Our waiter Jacob was efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable, as was the wine expert who steered us to two wines we were not familiar with and we loved them both. We brought another couple who had never tried Chavez and they are now hooked as well. We will be back again and again - a great place to watch the bats if you get a table by the window.

We actually went to Chavez once before for dinner. I liked the ambience but we were all disappointed in the portion size for price. I don't think any of us knew the type of restaurant we were going into and that is pretty much our fault. This was also during SPURS playoffs and there were only two tvs in the bar area. It would have been way better if the giant screen in the meeting room, where we ate, was working. Food was delicious and staff was decent that night. I think if we had the right expectations, we would have enjoyed ourselves more. I have to say, I did not intend on going back to Chavez due it just nit being my cup of tea. Then I received the coupon via email for a free lunch and decided to go. Lunch experience was more my speed

This was my first visit to Chavez and since the food had gotten mixed reviews on Yelp I wasn't sure what to expect. My friend and I went for Sunday brunch and ordered from the breakfast menu. I ordered chicken fried steak, scrambled egg whites, and fried potatoes. The chicken fried steak was some of the best I have ever had - not too much breading, not overcooked, great flavor. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were good but not what I expected. It seemed like they fried two medium sized potatoes by just dropping them in the fryer whole. I have never seen that before. Our waitress showed up occasionally but, mostly, our water glasses remained mostly empty. It took 15 minutes to find her so we could get our check.

Had a business dinner entertaining clients. Put a note requesting a window view and they graciously complied to my delight! Great food! But no vegetarian main dish... That caused problems as waiter said they can get the chef to make a special dish, but later she came back and said he's too busy. That really upset my client. However... The manager came by to apologize and without our asking he comp'd his meal as well and showered us with many free appetizers. Apparently this night they got slammed and he said they are working to improve their execution. I appreciate the honesty. I value that over free things which is why I still will recommend them and plan to go back. Enjoyed the lamb in mole and their fancy chicken wings!
