Diner Reviews
  • "I love this place. The food is fresh, light, thoughtful, healthy but decadent."

  • "We decided on Chavez for two reasons; the food and the view...for bats, of course. Bats performed as required and the food was wonderful. We each had something different and shared... Excellent! And the staff was extremely accommodating. Will be back! Bats or not!"

  • "Beautiful view of Town Lake, peaceful dining room, very good service, loved the homemade chips and guacamole, Torta was okay, I was not a fan of the bun it was served on but the veggies and fried fish were terrific."

  • "Had a small birthday lunch. I am a big fan of Michael Hsu so somewhat picked the restaurant for the atmosphere he created. Love SW cuisine and Shawn Cirkel cuisine so knew I could not go wrong. Wanted a light lunch so picked the large heirloom tomato salad because I would be dining again for dinner latter in the day. It was beautiful and tasted fabulous but wow the portions for us all were tiny. The description on the menu of large salad was not appropriate. If the portions had not been so stingy, I would have rated 5*."

  • "Well we were looking for a new brunch spot and we liked it we were just surprised that it was a Buffett style only. I wish we would have known ahead of time. The restaurant being in a hotel, we knew would be pricie but a Buffett style is not what we were looking for at a high cost. Service ambiance quality of food are perfect and we will visit again just not for brunch."

  • "Love the food, raw bar, cocktails and wine list. The chocolate dessert is killer. The restaurant design is gorgeous - just wish it wasn't in a hotel. If the entrance was separate, rather than through the lobby, it would help tremendously."

  • "The Place - I have to say the restaurant looked & felt fantastic. It was open, clean and simple in a very good way. Not bold, aggressive, but very comfortable. Great deign, except for one thing, the all wooden chairs were very uncomfortable. Bad selection there! The Food - The early signs were great. Ice tea with lime (true to a real Mex. restaurant place), a great Caesar Salad (again a real Mex detail most don't view as Mexican). The Ribs appetizer was excellent, cooked perfectly and the favor light but delicious. The soup was just ok, thin on flavor and thin on substance. The entrees not so much, both entree's lacked flavor and really under delivered. The meat (pork) was not tender, the chicken (mole) was very bland."

  • "We went to Chavez for my birthday dinner and had a great experience. Not only was our waiter attentive, the dishes we ordered were beautifully presented and there were a few unexpected twists like the butter-marinated onions that was served as a side to the beef brisket empanada. The Herb Crusted Mahi Mahi was good but the Grouper was outstanding. Portions were just right. Highly recommend the Cafe con Leche dessert which is gluten-free. Ask for a table with a lake view."

  • "Pros: Nice design, great drinks, great appetizers, great dessert, great service. Cons: The entrees weren't great. We have designated this a drink/appetizer hangout and will return."

  • "I had a long list of places I'd like to try downtown...thought we would check one off of out list. That was accomplished but not much more. Service was awful, and the food was mediocre at best."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "The restaurant is stunningly beautiful, in modern decor, mostly white, that still somehow manages not to be cold or intimidating. The service is the same; professional but still warm and personal. The food is, quite simply, delicious. The empanadas and sopas are excellent appetizers, as is the smoked salmon. For main courses, the blade steak al pastor can't be beat for flavor and surprising tenderness, though my husband liked his lamb mole nearly as much. This is my third time at this restaurant, and I'll be going back again. It's that good."

  • "I held a small business dinner at this facility. They seated us next to a beautiful view of the lake, with a great view of the bats leaving late evening. Once a couple of very large parties finished dining the noise level was very expectable. I found the food very well prepared and presented. I would definitely go back again."

  • "This restaurant is a gem. Newly opened and replacing a TGIFridays, it offers an interesting menu with a number of healthy choices."

  • "Ordered drinks at the bar to wait for the table. Arrived when we already were seated at the table. Disappointing blade steak: if braised it should be tender, if grilled it should not be overcooked. Rest of food ok to good (grouper, lamb). Dulce de leche without much dulce de leche, good churros de mais. Now the point: the restaurant site/menu states 18% gratuity for parties of 6. We were 6. The check arrived with a so-called "suggested" 20% gratuity already added. I requested a check without gratuity, which was obtained. "Thrown onto the table" is a better description. Nonetheless added 18%. Then we left without even eye contact with our waiter still present. Maybe a French-speaking table looks like a deer park? Been living in TX for years."

  • "This was not a good dining experience for us. The service was good, view was pretty. But the food not so good. Brisket sandwich was so so. Hamburger was just ok. Caesar salad just average. Special salad was overpriced and had no flavor."

  • "I visited for the first time recently. I loved the décor and ambiance - just lovely. The food was delicious. The service was great. The wait staff was really helpful recommending dishes and was right on target."

  • "My husband and I had lunch after a wonderful hike in the morning, so the view of the lake and others walking around or paddling along was perfect for the tone of our day. Very quiet, and lovely ambiance. We were underdressed and didn't feel out of place because of it. The renovation is gorgeous, and greatly appreciated the tone of the restaurant. The dessert was our favorite part, SO delicious with a great mixture of textures and tastes. Wonderful service, with the right amount of attention! We will be back."

  • "pros: the ambiance and decor of the restaurant was phenomenal! food was very tasty - lamb in mole and oyster tacos were both excellent! the cornbread was also a nice treat. server and managers were pleasant. cons: slowest service i have received in a long time, seriously. people in my party did not receive items that they ordered - drinks, salads, etc., when the entrees finally came, some of the food was not hot, almost cold. because of the wait, we got complimentary dessert, which was sorbet, and even that took a long time. overall: good food, good ambiance, nice staff, but they need to get it together with timing and serving large parties."

  • "We really enjoyed the ceviche and the oysters. Ask for chips with the Civiche and they'll happily accommodate. (Crackers otherwise). The crab tostadas are wonderful! We shared several appetizers/tapas and an entre. That's a great way to try a little of everything."

  • "My group of six international business colleagues had an excellent experience at Chavez. I had wanted to find a restaurant that would provide a representative southwestern experience and Chavez really came through. Our meals were outstanding; the Mahi Mahi and salmon was fresh, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully, and the steaks were tender and cooked to the requested temperature. One of my colleagues is a vegetarian and the chef prepared a sumptuous array of beautifully-cooked fresh vegetables. My colleague was very pleased. However, our server pointed out that there were a number of vegetarian options on the menu. Service was prompt, attentive, but not intrusive. And the view over the river was splendid. We were all delighted."

  • "The shrimp salad was delish and presented beautifully. Great wine selection as we'll. A word to those on a schedule, though: service is super slow and it can take a long time for servers to get to you. We have reservations for 4 at 8 p.m. Hardly crowded, but we didn't get out of there until 10:45. Atmosphere is open and modern. Great view."

  • "This was our second time having dinner here and it was just as great as the first time. Don't know why The Statesman gave it a negative write up a few months ago, but we never pay attention to any of their reviews. Our waiter Jacob was efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable, as was the wine expert who steered us to two wines we were not familiar with and we loved them both. We brought another couple who had never tried Chavez and they are now hooked as well. We will be back again and again - a great place to watch the bats if you get a table by the window."

  • "We tried half the menu on our first visit to Chavez and were very happy. There were a couple missed but both were on the specials card and not on the main menu. I recommend going in a big group and ordering one of everything on the menu, you'll thank me! Also, don't forget desert... incredible!"

  • "We actually went to Chavez once before for dinner. I liked the ambience but we were all disappointed in the portion size for price. I don't think any of us knew the type of restaurant we were going into and that is pretty much our fault. This was also during SPURS playoffs and there were only two tvs in the bar area. It would have been way better if the giant screen in the meeting room, where we ate, was working. Food was delicious and staff was decent that night. I think if we had the right expectations, we would have enjoyed ourselves more. I have to say, I did not intend on going back to Chavez due it just nit being my cup of tea. Then I received the coupon via email for a free lunch and decided to go. Lunch experience was more my speed"

  • "Our meal was outstanding. The food and cocktails were fresh and innovative. The menu had a intriguing variety of choices. The service was attentive, but our waitress was not very personable or knowledgeable about the wine or drink menu. Dessert was beautiful and delicious. The new space is very attractive, but still had a hotel restaurant feel."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "The look of the restaurant is very nice, but it isn't a new place anymore and the service is still very questionable. The food is just average."

  • "This was my first visit to Chavez and since the food had gotten mixed reviews on Yelp I wasn't sure what to expect. My friend and I went for Sunday brunch and ordered from the breakfast menu. I ordered chicken fried steak, scrambled egg whites, and fried potatoes. The chicken fried steak was some of the best I have ever had - not too much breading, not overcooked, great flavor. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were good but not what I expected. It seemed like they fried two medium sized potatoes by just dropping them in the fryer whole. I have never seen that before. Our waitress showed up occasionally but, mostly, our water glasses remained mostly empty. It took 15 minutes to find her so we could get our check."

  • "Had a business dinner entertaining clients. Put a note requesting a window view and they graciously complied to my delight! Great food! But no vegetarian main dish... That caused problems as waiter said they can get the chef to make a special dish, but later she came back and said he's too busy. That really upset my client. However... The manager came by to apologize and without our asking he comp'd his meal as well and showered us with many free appetizers. Apparently this night they got slammed and he said they are working to improve their execution. I appreciate the honesty. I value that over free things which is why I still will recommend them and plan to go back. Enjoyed the lamb in mole and their fancy chicken wings!"

  • "We asked For Two starters Two mains and a side dish. The 2 mains where fantastic, fried hen and monkey fish, Great presentation, fantastic taste and original combination of ingredients- the raw bass is a joke, nice quality of the thinnest filet you've seen over a whole $1avocado. The corn side dish worths the visit. Great decoration and nice ambience. Good service. Quantities are pretty small, we left the restaurant pretty hungry."

  • "The food was excellent and the waitstaff very attentive. Their signature margarita was one of the best I've had. Chavez has the best view on Lady Bird Lake and we had what we think was the best seat in the house--a lovely table in the corner by the window with a full view of the lake and the Ann Richards Bridge. If you're looking for a special-occasion place with wonderful food and a view, dine at Chavez!"

  • "Booked Chavez because I wanted a romantic dinner with a view of town lake and was in the mood for upscale Mexican - Chavez delivered! In my open table request, asked for a quiet table with a view and was seated at a corner table by the window. Overall decor is beautiful - sleek, modern with full wall of windows overlooking the lake. Bar was cool - great cocktail selection. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable; made great suggestions (corn side was a highlight). Manager stopped by to see how we were enjoying it. Wine selection, dinner (had steaks) and after dinner latte exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend."

  • "Chavez is the upscale makeover of the old TGI Fridays that is in the Radisson Hotel at Congress Ave/Cesar Chavez. The restaurant makeover is modern and very attractive. Obviously, this is THE spot for bat watching at the Ann Richard's Bridge. The food was very good and presented well. The house crafted cocktails showed imagination, and were very tasty. I thought the menu was a little thin, with only two meat entrees offered: carne guisada and pork steak (which i had and enjoyed). Our server was knowledgeable of his menu and cocktails, attentive but not overly, and was a capable representative of this new addition to downtown. We will be back."

  • "Friday night at Chavez with my niece. Restaurant was full, but that did not affect service at all. Our food was so delicious and fresh and cooked perfectly. Our waiter was attentive without being annoying, made great suggestions, was personable and professional. Mango salad, pineapple cucumber salad, ribs for appetizer, filet, and grooper- all amazing. Very cold gray goose martini as ordered, and a very nice 'house' merlot. Beautifully designed restaurant - lovely pecan wood walls and Texas oak floors - floor to ceiling windows viewing Lady Bird Lake and 'bat bridge'. Noise level not horrible."

We sat by the window with a lovely view of Lady Bird Lake and the Congress Street bridge. The food was terrific - a very interesting menu - and our waiter was really good - informative and friendly, but not intrusive. The decor is stunning. We will be back!"
