Diner Reviews
  • "The service at the Chart House was outstanding. When arriving at the restaurant we were promptly greeted by hostess and seated immediately. The waiter arrived a short time later and was very personable and knowledgeable of both the food and wine menu. Recommendations were made for appetizers and main course. Appetizers along with drinks were served while we waited for our meal to be prepared. Our server would check with us periodically as we made our way through appetizers and also we received a visit from one of the managers. Our meal arrived shortly after finishing appetizers and it was delivered to the table by white glove service. Everything about this evening at the Chart House was perfect. "

  • "We went to Chart House on one of those "when will winter ever end?" nights. Cold, rainy. Sleeting. It was the perfect place to cure the blahs. We were seated near a "fireplace" and at a window. The food was very good. Service was great. This place is towards a higher end, price-wise. If you are looking for family seafood dining in Old Town Alexandria better to try the Fish Market. If its business or romance, go to Chart House. They have a large outdoor seating area which seemed like it would be great in the summer!"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant many times over the past 20 years. It still has a lot of charm, but we went on a Sunday evening, and I was disappointed by the salad bar, which was always one of the best features of the restaurant. I found it messy and the selections poor. There was no one visibly around to replenish items or keep the salad bar presentable, and my husband had to ask our waiter twice to bring bacon bits, which were out of stock on the salad bar. The door where you have to reach down to get the plates is difficult to open. Yes, it is good to keep plates cold, but the door should be easier to slide. I would like to be able to recommend the salad bar again but feel that it was not up to standard this time."

  • "We took the water taxi over from National Harbor to Alexandria, Va. We had a wonderful birthday celebration and a fantastic table "with a view". The food was great and the Mud Pie for a birthday dessert was delicious. Will definitely be returning."

  • "I have been to Charthouse a number of times and have never been disappointed. The steak is always cooked perfectly, and there is usually some interesting appetizer to try. The last 3 times I have been there has been with a small group of up to 6 people. The restaurant is always accomodating and everyone always enjoys the evening."

  • "I blame management for the poor service which due to lack of proper training. Servers don't know how to open and poor wine. Wine list has crappy low level bottles on it, pacific rim and mirrisou really!!! Bring your own wine for best results and open it your self. Restaurant has potential just need better managers and suitable wine list."

  • "Went there based on reviews in open table. It is over rated, unless you want a very noisy restaurant. Two of the three entrees were disappointing."

  • "Seated 15 minutes after our reservation time. Sat down, and it took 5-10 minutes before a waiter came, he took our orders. He came back 15 minutes later with our calimari and one drink, and ten minutes after that we still had not gotten our 3 other drinks. We flagged down the waiter and inquired where our drinks were. He came back with a few drinks, but they still had not gotten my beer. By the time i got my beer, it had been 35 minutes since I ordered. He said they were 'changing the keg'. The soup and salad finally came out 55 minutes after we sat down, main course came 1 hour and 25 minutes after we sat down. Food was excellent. Service was poor as waiter was covering way too many tables."

  • "Enjoyed the lovely view, the food, great service and quick. Nice selection of wines and loved that you had in the menu the "petite" bottle of champagne."

  • "I am not sure why we keep going back the Chart House, as every time we leave we talk about how bad the food is. I guess the allure of the picturesque view keeps us coming back. As a party of six we had a diverse array of food, none of which was good. The saving grace of our lunch was a beautiful day, excellent service and a great view. While we can recommend the salad bar, we cannot recommend anything else."

  • "We ordered two dozen of oysters since we really appreciate that but they had no taste, literally NO taste Fortunately we sent them back and the manager offered us one of the two dozen but they were awful Globally it s not the restaurant we were expecting our pretension was high and we figured out this restaurant was not that good The ahi tuna was very good but the pieces were too small"

  • "Nothing special. Silver wear dirty, waiter took forever, messed up the order and way over priced"

  • "The restaurant is a wonderful choice for a special occasion event. Our seating was perfect, the food was excellent, the wait staff was attentive. The only issue that we had was the large group sitting in front of us. There were approximately 14 in the group and they were loud. This was the only issue that affected our trip. the restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere provided of course, if they sat large groups in a totally different area that was more secluded from the regular patrons. I would also suggest they require a more strict dress code for this restaurant. Blue jeans and cut offs just do not make the grade."

  • "Again we had a wonderful lunch at the Chart House. The view on the water makes your meal special. The food is way above average. Fresh, flavorful and plenty of it. I've been to the Chart House before and always get excited about coming back. It never disappoints!!"

  • "The food, service and views were great. I only have two complaints which resulted in four stars vice five. The draft beer selection is underwhelming and it is served in an undersized glass - not a pint. The other complaint has to do with the extraordinarily uncomfortable chairs - they are really worn out."

  • "The Chart House has the best view of the Potomac from "Old Town" Alexandria. Robert our waiter was fantastic. We had the best table in the house. Definitely, request a window seat. Meal was one of the highlights of a great get-away weekend."

  • "Great waterfront restaurant. Outstanding food menu selections. Good food (seafood, meat & poultry) and drinks. High ceilings reduces noise level and great waterfront views. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Mr. T McLean, VA"

  • "Each visit has been slightly less satisfying than the previous one. This visit had another mistake by the staff. Last time the tenderloin medallions were over cooked. This time the waiter put in the wrong order and the fish was slightly over cooked....like it had been under a warmer too long. But even with these mistakes, the rest of dinner was good....especially the crab cakes. The manager always offered something to offset the mistakes, so that was nice as well. We would still go there for our dinner dates.....location and ambience are hard to beat."

  • "My wife wanted lobster for our 12th Wedding Anniversary. She ordered the Cod stuffed with lobster dish for $40.00+, and received Cod and breadcrumbs. No Lobster! We complained to the waiter and got a tiny little dish of dried out lobster. The rest of the dinner and the Lava Cake were both delicious. The service was very good, and we enjoyed a table by the window as requested."

  • "I am a little disappointed the food in Chart House Restaurant. The food here is average. it does not meet my expectation because my friend recommended me to this restaurant. The view is nice. The atmosphere is romantic. If the food is better, that will be great. For example, we ordered the Rib (or steak) in medium, but when I tasted it, it was over cooked. And I think the salmon is too dry, which I saw it is the signature in the menu. I was disappointed about the salmon. The chocolate lava cake is delicious which is the only food I would recommend to my friend. Hope this comment would help you to improve it in the future."

  • "I live in the area but my four sisters arrived from Oregon, N.C., MI and MD to spend time with my mother who is in an Alexandria nursing facility. We all stayed at a hotel in Alexandria for the weekend. Our best dining experience was at the Chart House. They are foodies, one a former Chef, and enjoyed everything presented. Henry, our waiter, was amazing. The restaurant was very full, very noisy, yet he gave us full attention and answered all of our questions in a polite and non-rushed way. We all hope to return together to dine there in the future."

  • "We took my husband's elderly mother for a birthday lunch - the restaurant were wonderful about congratulating her, gave her a personalised menu, a cake and candles etc and fussed over her very nicely. The downside was that the seating was rather cramped for a lady in her 80s with limited mobility and the restaurant was busy so noisy and she struggled to hear what was being said to her. She was delighted with the food and thoroughly enjoyed herself."

  • "As in any Chart House, the view and outdoor setting was truly perfect. Watching the sunset over the docks was a great way to end the day. The food was good, high points and low points. The crab soup was very good with a flavor punch that was definitive but not overwhelming. The beef medallions were perfectly cooked and well flavored with the sauce. The coconut shrimp were bland, greasy and only flavorful when dipped into the sauce. The high point was the wait staff---very courteous, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and efficient. And not just those assigned to our table, but everyone we came into contact with during the evening. Couldn't ask for more. Wish the food had been better."

  • "We were visiting Alexandria from Florida and wanted to enjoy a good meal with a great view. Though the restaurant is a chain, we had an amazing and personal experience. Our server was truly outstanding. She gave excellent suggestions, was attentive without being intrusive, and really made our experience great. The food was also great. We enjoyed the hot crab dip appetizer before our entrées and we're impressed by the amount of lump crab on the dish. For entrées we enjoyed the seafood sampler (can't recall the exact name) and it was the perfect portion with unique flavors for each item. Some sample platters are clearly just different seafood cooked the same way-but the salmon, shrimp and crab cake each had excellent and distinct flavors."

  • "I had a surprise dinner for my wife and the guest were already seated before we arrived. The service was OK, the waiter didn't explain anything on the menu to start and he did mix up one of our orders. the Floor manager came over to check on us and when we told him about the mix up, he took care of it right away!"

  • "Unique and wonderful waterfront seafood experience. Right on the main dock in Old Town Alexandria. The service and food were great. In season reservations are a must as this great restaurant is in heavy demand by tourists and locals. Denny, the General Manager, goes out of his way to make sure all the guests have a wonderful experience. When this restaurant is fully packed with enthusiastic and happy guests the background noise is somewhat elevated. When this is the case and you have serious business to discuss ask for the upstairs dinning room, which is a little quieter but still has great views of the Potomac River and local boat traffic."
