A word from Charlie Trotter's
Charlie Trotter's restaurant is located in an elegant, residential style townhome in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Chef Trotter's cuisine originates from the finest foodstuffs available. A network of over 90 purveyors provide the fresh, healthful ingredients that inspire him to create flavorful masterpieces. From the naturally raised meat and game, to the line-caught seafood, to the organic produce, every component of each dish is the purest available. Charlie Trotter's degustation offers three tasting menus to highlight the finest, freshest foodstuffs obtainable. Chef Trotter prefers his cuisine to be experienced in a progression of petite courses with each course laying the foundation for the next. Chef Trotter's wine list is created with Charlie's culinary philosophy in mind — that food and wine are intended not only to complement each other, but to inspire one another, making the selection and interplay of the wine and food an integral part of the dining experience.

The food was amazing--even better than I remember from a visit 4 years ago. The service was a mess. I don't know I'd the waiters even knew what they were serving. Guess that's what you get 2 days before shut-down. Glad I got to enjoy one last meal at Trotter's.

Another fantastic experience at Chef Trotter's. Sad that this is the last week of a gem for Chicago. After 6 dining experiences here over the past decade, I'll miss Chef Trotter's front of house greeting/razing, as well as the fantastic service, dining and wine.

Top 3 places we've ever eaten. Easily the most interesting and well paired meal I've ever eaten. Heavy european influence in the food, with the exceptional american service. Most of the attention to Charlie Trotters is focused on the menu. A satisfying meal without the heavy over indulgence so many establishments aim for. We ate and drank for 3 hours without feeling like calling it an early night. The single best service we've ever received. The resident wine snob was anything but. He was young, yet clearly educated. He offered enough with each of the 7 pours to accompany dinner, without overwhelming and was ready to answer any question or elaborate when asked. The wait staff was attentive, without impacting our dinner. Fabulous!

While the service started a little slow it picked up and ended up being outstanding. The food was well planned and executed, the staff was personable and funny. When trying to decide my favorite dish I could only narrow it down to 4 (out of 8), I think that speaks to the precision and delightfulness of each dish. Truly a memorable experience and I am very sad they are closing their doors later this month.

I went to Charlie Trotter's becuase it is going to close soon and I wanted to experience the legend. Overall I am not surprised it's closing - it was a subquality experience. I dine frequently at michelin star restaurant in Chicago and elsewhere. Typically it means good service, speciall attention and exceptionally good food. The food was very good but not mind blowing. The four course dinner I had the week before at Boka left me more satisfied and cost me 1/3 of the price. The wine list and the bakery really stand out as the best in Chicago in my opnion. The service is really what makes me upset. A supponent waiter, very slow service (3+ h for 6 course ??) and the fact that we were not allowed to complete our meal are not justifiable at 850$

I had made a long journey to eat at Charlie Trotters. I felt I had to to experience it before it closed. Don't get me wrong the food was good but I guess I was just never "wowed" by anything. Having a degree from the CIA as well as a degree in hospitality management maybe I expected too much. But then again this was the great "Charlie Trotter's" and they had only days left and I was hoping every last meal would be as best it could possibly be. It was a good meal and some dishes definitely did shine. The antelope was phenomenal and the duck breast was seared perfectly. But, my one of our halibut's were dry and we both had just under tough short ribs. I guess at the end of the day every one just seemed "tired."

We flew into Chicago from Philly the day of our dinner reservation at Charlie Trotter's (and flew home the next day). We walked to dinner (it was a lovely night). Since we weren't sure how long the walk would take, we left ample time and as a result, arrived about 25 minutes early. We were told that was not a problem, and within five minutes we were seated. We opted for the Grand menu and the wine pairings: although very pricey (which we knew and expected), it was worth it for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. When each course was served, both the wine pairings and the dish were explained. We were surprised by a complimentary course of Wagu beef which was excellent! We would have loved to meet CT, but he had left. It was a great night!

I was expecting much more from my Trotter's experience. The food was well executed and interesting and the service was good, but not demanding of the price point. Many other Chicago area restaurants now execute this concept better and at a lower cost. It was also almost insulting to have 18% automatically added to my bill for service charged, based on food AND wine, and then have the valet remind me twice that parking and his tip were not included in our dinner.

I would have given Trotter's a perfect 5 had not for the very poor service i.e. water rarely refilled, inconsistent table setting after completion of each course. You would have expected better for the price you pay to dine. I had way better service at Alinea. However, I am glad that the food out shined the service -- devine!

We were celebrating a birthday and anniversary and so flew in from California for the occasion since we were married in Chicago. We were fortunate to be able to get reservations since the restaurant is closing at the end of the month. We got the wine flight which we enjoyed to go with the tasting menu. The starting course of mussels, quinoa and sweet and sour cucumber really set the tone for a delicious meal. I would say that this is the best meal we have had in months. My wife even got a kiss from Charlie and we were given a kitchen tour. It was a memorable event and were glad to be able to celebrate at Charlie's.

  • An Ode to Charlie Trotter

It is a shame that Chef Trotter is hanging up his apron at this famous and well-loved restaurant! I remember going to dine there in his early years and being wowed by the food (it was served on a different lovely china pattern for each course)and service. I thought after that experience that it was the only way to dine: small portions of the most delectible foods with intensely rich sauces! I believe that his restaurant started the "grazing" style of entertaining. I hope that after a rest, he'll come back with another fine dining venue. There are enough casual and barbeque joints in Chicago! I saw an article in Newsweek Magazine naming the top 150 restaurants in the world. I was shocked that not a single restaurant in Chicago was named!

Upon arriving at Charlie Trotters, we were greeted by the hostess and when she heard our last name, she said Happy Anniversary. It's the detail that makes this restaurant so amazing. Our menu had "Happy Anniversary Dan and Theresa". We ordered the Grand menu and wine pairings. Our servers were all very knowledgeable and presented everything with wonderful explanations. The food was exquisite and the wine accented the flavors beautifully. Each dish was a work of culinary art and it appealed to all of our senses. After dinner, we were able to go into the kitchen and then to the Studio kitchen. I am so thankful we were able to dine here before the end of this Charlie Trotter venture. Surely he will open another restaurant sometime

We came here last weekend, in the final couple weeks the restaurant will be open. The food was great - interesting flavor combinations and many different things to taste. The server seemed bothered when my wife asked for suggestions from the wine list. She said she was open to everything except Chardonnay. His first suggestion...Chardonnay. Finally, with our first course waiting on the table, we got the wine ordered. The rest of the night the service just seemed unattentive. As for the food, this is what made it so disappointing; the menu was an 8 course GRAND menu. The courses were too small. Also, of the eight courses, three were desserts! For comparison, Alinea's courses were small but at least two were larger than every course at Trotter's and there were 14 courses. After the first dessert, we asked for the check. By the time we paid we had one more course. We needed to go and find food. At midnight!

  • Tax on the service charge?

Wanted to try this place before it closed. While it was really good, for the money, it did not live up to what I expected. While a couple of dishes were really good, some were just ok (salt making up for most of the flavor). The wine pairings were really nice (except for the Chard) and our waiters were friendly and on top of things. I was surprised that the service charge was automatically added and more surprised that they charged tax on it (I even questioned them on it and they said they didn't, but I've now reviewed my receipt and unless the Chicago tax rate is 12.6%, they certainly did).

Disappointing. I see why he's closing. The wallpaper is peeling at the seams and the carpet is bare. The decor overall is dated. The food was good, but it didn't blow me away like Alinea, Next, Everest, Tru or Arun's. The highlights were the wine pairing and the service.

Had heard about for years and because Chef Trotter was retiring soon-made the trip to Chicago to specifically dine there. Food was good, not exceptional, and service was fair. Wine Sommelier(RYAN) was excellent-dining area upstairs in the back was tired and unattractive. I spent $1200 for dinner and wine for 3. I don't think this restaurant would ever make it in Houston Texas.

    Dined on 8/15/2012
Ive visited several exquisite restaurants and this was a major disappointment. I left with a sour taste in my mouth. Or maybe that was a salty taste from the overly salted pretzel bread or perhaps it was dry mouth from the overly dry raspberry dessert. Upon informing both my waiter and the hostess of my poor experience, no accommodations or even apologies were extended. I can easily afford to eat here but considering the cost I wouldn't dare suggest dining here to anyone. Instead, visit one of the many other gems in the City (most cost far less)! Walking away from the restaurant, my guest and I couldn't help but wonder the true reason it's closing and nick naming the place Charlie Spotter for the lack of consistency in taste.

Given the fact that the restaurant will be closing in a few days, it seems a waste of time to review the experience. However, given all the things that didn't quite function last evening, I have a desire to get this off my chest. First, because the restaurant was packed, service was slow ... and very confused. Three waiters knew nothing about the wine list. I ordered the vegetable menu but continuously received courses from the Grand Menu. Every mistake added significant time to the dining experience. Some dishes were cold when they arrived, others were not very tasty. We left without eating any of the dessert courses after already having spent 3 1/2 hours there. I waited 20+ years to dine here: sadly, it wasn't worth the wait.
