Our menu comes from New York's farmers markets, Long Island fishing boats, country fields and the wondrous meanderings of spirited travelers with passionate palates. We're crushing seafood, roasted meats, crazy good wine and creamy espresso. We present a wine list broad enough for you to come by and enjoy wine with us every night or you can order something you can't get anywhere else in the world. We're Italian influenced, American executed and entirely New York.

  • "They rush you through your meal. I'm guessing so as to accommodate their next reservation. Our plates were taken away as soon as we finished our last bite and they even offered to take away our sides which we were still working on. The bill was promptly placed on the table when we declined dessert. We were definitely rushed through our meal as evidenced by being in and out of the restaurant in less than an hour. Disappointingly awful service for an otherwise well-reviewed restaurant."

  • "Visited on a Friday evening and had been really looking forward to it. We had a table reservation, but opted to sit at the bar since it seemed to have a good vibe and ambience for us to enjoy. That lasted just until the bartender appeared. Luckily for him, I never asked his name and tossed my receipt, but throughout my 12 years living in NYC I have never had such atrocious service. New levels of rudeness, a totally unfriendly demeanor and basically he could not have made us feel less welcome. On a positive note, the food we tasted was good. Of particular note, both crudo dishes we had -- razor clams and the scallops -- were fresh, vibrant and flavorful. TINY portions, but delicious."

  • "We had lunch reservations for 1:00 on Friday and did not end up leaving until after 3:00 pm. It took nearly 45 minutes for our appetizers to arrive and then at least 30 minutes between when we finished our appetizer and when our main course came out. But that wasn't even the worst part. Our waiter was extremely sarcastic and rude. Every thing I asked for was answered with an extremely sarcastic and annoyed response. He even rolled his eyes when we asked for the check after we had been trying to get his attention for 15 minutes. We were a party of 3 and spent a lot of $$ on our meal and drinks. All in all, I love Charlie Bird's food and have been 3 times but after this service, I most likely will not return."

  • "Lots of hype for this restaurant and it just wasn't all that. First, diners piled up in the vestibule because the front door was locked until precisely 5:30PM when it opened. And it was like 7 degrees out. The space is visually well done, but they were blasting hip hop music (Jay Z but still most of the diners were middle aged at 5:30PM and it wasn't conducive to a calm dining experience). Although many of the workers, especially the hostess was very friendly, we had the dullest server with no personality. I had the rigatoni and it was very salty. Wines by the glass were just ok. Not in hurry to go back."

  • "The deconstructed veal pastrami 'sandwich" was fantastic, as was the brussel sprouts salad. My friend loved her poached egg with polenta. I thought the wines by the glass were ridiculously overpriced, but the one reasonably priced red, the barbera ($12), was quite good. We also enjoyed the lemon pistachio cake with lemon gelato. All in all, a very good meal, in a lovely setting, and the service was terrific. Our waiter was so attentive yet never intrusive. I definitely recommend it."

  • "Such a gem. Now I understand why this was one of the best new restaurants of 2013. Though it was extremely cold out and sitting by the window you could feel the cold draft, the place is so cozy with the wooded walls and floors, it makes it feel warm, like a ski chalet. The food was quite fantastic, especially the farro salad with pistachios, mint and parmesan - a superb combination of flavors. The butternut squash side was very tasty, and the duck entree cooked to perfection. A very nice wine selection, the "very Tuscan" Bellos by Jordan Salcito was perfect. A very lovely experience."

  • "Charlie Bird is leading the (Manhattan) pack in terms of the new, trendy style of restaurant in NY serving solid food with a well thought out wine list in a very casual setting (with old an school rap playlist to boot!). And that’s great, except for the fact that you’re really paying through the nose for this hip ambiance. The food, although solid, really doesn’t justify the prices or the foodie media hype. No pastry chef here either which means dessert is anticlimactic and not a grand finale. Suffice to say, if you’re really looking for excellence in food, rather than a cool vibe, then I would look elsewhere. By the way, I agree with the earlier reviewer regarding the tiny $19 pour of Riesling; it’s ridiculous."

  • "The crisp salad that it came with was a bit indiscernable. I wasn't sure what I was eating. I still don't know, but it was sown thing fried. There was a pate on the plate I washy prepared for, but it was good, not great. And then am avocado-based pate that didn't blow my socks off either. I also wasn't expecting the roasted chicken to have been dredged through flour but it was nicely cooked. I also had the farrow salad with pitachio and mint. It was fresh and a nice way to begin the meal. The place has a lot of buzz so perhaps the other "large" plates and the pasta are great but the roasted chicken was not great."

  • "I liked the fact that the menu included the wine list for all diners. Also there is an option for half bottles. I do not know if there is an up charge. Great casual restaurant. Can't compete with New York three star restaurants with waiters in sneakers and street clothes. Service was spotty and over casual. Waiter dropped a Liter of water and a liter of still water on our two top and said "help yourself", really? We did not recieve bRead but noticed the deuce next to us did. Maybe Sunday at 8:45 is the wrong time to go?"

The service was also really exceptional -- every single person we interacted with was friendly and went out of their way to ensure our experience was good. The wine list was extensive and offered a lot of options at a variety of price points. Would definitely go back, but probably only for special occasions given the price."

  • "Was really looking forward to trying out Charlie Bird but will not be going back their any time soon. While the food was pretty good, the service wasn't great at all and the wine list was ridiculously overpriced. After I complained about the 2 ounce pour I received for a $19 glass of desert wine, our waiter literally threw our check on the table and knocked over my friend's glass of wine. He never apologized and walked away. Charlie Bird is waaaay too overpriced for what you get."

When we showed the hostess the email confirmation from opentable, they were confused and apologetic, but made no effort to seat us immediately, on time (8:30 pm Sunday). And there were plenty of open 2-tops! Poor showing. The food is delicious, but we won't risk going back until the system works!"

  • "It is wonderful to come across a restaurant that clicks for you, the diner. The food is imaginative, the wine list in a class well above the ordinary, the service is professional, and accessible. The setting is a little crowded, and the place can be loud, but the dining experience makes those issues worth putting up with. Many people in New York consider themselves restaurant critics (in their own minds) and I am certainly one of them, but this restaurant is worth many return visits."

I would go back if I was in the area but I wouldn't wait 2 weeks to go back there. They didn't have anything that stood out in my mind. in my opinion this time next year it will be easy to get a reservation there."

  • "We shared a smattering of dishes and all were top-notch. The veal ragu and suckling pig were particularly wonderful. Beware, however; service is good, but slower than usual for NYC restaurants. This would not be a problem except you only have your reserved table for two hours. The space is good, but it fills up after 6p.m., as this is a current hot spot."

  • "Overall experience was just okay-- octopus appetizer was overcooked and chewey, while the scallop appetizer and warm figs /prosciutto were very good. Just when I forgave the disappointing octopus experience, the mushy, oversalted grilled summer beans arrived--I found myself trying to eat them, but each bite was painful. I tried to to will them to be good, but it was impossible. The black bass entree was also a letdown-- it, too, had way too much salt in it. Wine was wonderful and music fantastic: if they could get the food right, it would be a superb neighborhood gem. For now, I'll pass it by and definitely not recommend it to friends."
