  • "We've been going here for years, including the Troy and Palm Beach venues. It was a holiday weekend and there were not a lot of customers. The service was awesome, Stephanie couldn't have been better. The food was soso. The shrimp was over cooked, the mussels weren't all opened and the molten cake didn't run. But the crab was excellent. Not sure if we had a less experienced chef or if it's a deeper issue. Never had any issue before this visit."

  • "I have visited Charley's Crab more than 30 times previously. This was a bit disappointing compared to every other visit. My guests were very happy with their selections. However, my king crab, while generous and tasty, contained all claws and short pieces, making it very tedious to consume. I returned the following morning as another person's guest for Sunday Brunch, which was very much up to my previous expectation. I will assume my crab was an anomaly, and expect to be returning many times in the future. The service was, as usual, outstanding. The staff was very attentive, but not obtrusive or overbearing."

  • "Our dining experience was phenomenal. It began at the front door and continued to the tasty brie appetizer, summer themed drinks and incredibly delicious meals. Our server was friendly and very efficient. She attended to every question and was quick with a response to our needs. She was polite and helpful. Every bite was delicious and I have told many people about what a great experience it was. I also appreciated placing a reservation on-line. I will definitely return, not only for a special occasion, but just because I want to!"

  • "I treated my four spirit sisters to dinner to celebrate all kinds of wonderful things. We had a fabulous meal and our waiter, Calvin, was just fabulous! We don't get to be together very often, so this was an important time for us. Thanks for a great experience!"

  • "Food quality at brunch was terrible. Paid a lot of money for items we could have gotten from the breakfast bar at Big Boy. Belgian Waffles were soggy, French Toast was burned (I wouldn't have fed it to my own family) and mashed potatoes were runny. Three of the six in our party ordered omelets and they couldn't even get the cheese fully melted in any of them. And their dessert bar? What appeared to be store bought cookies and Rice Krispy Treats... really? Brunch for 6 cost over $180 (less tip) - we expected much better."

  • "Our waitress was Olivia. She was a very awesome server, friendl, always smiling, checking to see if how everything was, and very knowlegable regarding the menu. Charlie's Crab has the best waitresses in town. I do have to say the Chef's dessert of Strawberry Shortcake was ok, the bread topping was pretty dry and really does not to be put on top of the dessert...Otherwise everything was delicious."

  • "Group of 4 sat outside on the deck for dinner on a beautiful evening. Outside is much more casual than inside and a lot noisier. The traffic noise from US131 was loud enough to made it difficult to talk. The table and chairs weren't as clean or as nice as indoors. Service was wonderful as usual. Food was very good. Martha's Vineyard salad was super good (I get that every time). Whole Branzino very tasty (and very expensive), but difficult to separate the fish from the bones."

  • "Were there to celebrate a special occasion. Had the table in the corner by the window, so nice view of the river. Food was ok, nothing special - I had chicken marsala and my husband had the whitefish which he described as "good but just fish with hash browns on it". There were 5 of us and 2 of us each had a drink and 2 others split a bottle of wine, and the bill was over $220. Service was as good, not spectacular and, like I said food was good but a little overpriced in my opinion."

  • "The plusses included our table (our favorite, with a clear view of the river for all), our waitress (who earned five stars), and the quality of the food, excluding one out of the seven meals. The seventh meal - a steamer pot - was comprised of undercooked potatoes, overcooked shrimp and corn, and properly cooked but cold crab and mussels. While the rest of our group thoroughly enjoyed their meals, I ended up eating McDonalds on the way home. Six excellent meals out of seven is good statistically, but not so hot if you are the seventh diner! In addition, there were only three tables filled in our area of the restaurant, but it took an absurd length to time for us to be served our meals."

  • "We have enjoyed brunch at Charley's Crab several times for special occasions but were very disappointed on Father's Day. We arrived at 12:45 p.m. for our 1:00 p.m. reservation. We were not seated until 1:45 p.m. (45 minutes after our reservation). I am quite certain (unless they are very poor planners), people were taken ahead of us who had not made reservations. We had requested (through Open Table) waterview seating. Although there were tables available we were not seated there. The selection of brunch items was not as varied as the typical Sunday brunch at Charley's Crab. They also kept running out of food. They also did not clean up well. Everything looked "picked over.""

  • "The food was okay but for the price and reputation of the restaurant, I expected better food and larger portions. The Surf and Turf was comparable to something from Outback and the King Cove Sole was bland. We didn't send ours back because it wasn't terrible but we did see another couple send their food back. The service, however, was extraordinary. Our waitress was very attentive, I liked how the waitress picked you up from the front and seated you, and the manager checked on us twice during our meal. The drinks were great and the ambience was on key."

  • "My wife had never been to Charley's Crab before, so I took her there for our anniversary. The service was acceptable, but our waiter seemed out of place in fine dining. I ordered the sockeye salmon; it was a very small piece of fish (4-6oz), and totally unevenly cooked--medium on one end and rare on the other. I was told I'd have broccoli and carrots with rice; I substituted potatoes for rice, and received two large pieces of asparagus with the potatoes, which I don't eat. My wife had salmon Rockefeller. The fish was ok, but her vegetables were undercooked and a bit fibrous. Her rice was cold. Not at all what it used to be, and a disappointing meal. If I'm spending $100 on a dinner, it needs to be outstanding--this wasn't it."

  • "The service was good, but the food was only fair. For a seafood restaurant, they did not have a good selection of seafood. Mostly just different types of salmon. They also had shelled shrimp on ice. You would think for the money you spend they could shell the shrimp for you. The sushi did not look edible and was not fish it was a roll with rice and pickled red pepper (at least that is what it looked like). The breakfast portion was fair, but the lunch portion was bland. The salmon with rice was overcooked. They had ham and roast beef but no sides to go along with it. The desserts were dry and the creme brule was not hard on the top, so it was basically custard. I would not recommend spending $30 to go to brunch here."

  • "A beautiful dining room with handsome views, but the food is a disappointment. Soft-shell crabs were dry and bland (!!). What they call bouillabaisse bears no relationship to the richly flavored, saffron-infused real thing. Fish (several varieties for different people in our party) was all overcooked, dry, and tough--this at a restaurant that bills itself as a seafood place, so one expects them to know, at the very least, how to cook fish. It took three tries to find a wine on their list that they actually had. Service was good and friendly--what was served, not so much."

  • "We made reservations at this restaurant with the expectation that they had some of the top seafood in the Grand Rapids area. My husband ordered the surf and turf (medium rare). The filet was well done, and the lobster was so tough it was nearly inedible. Aside from that, the fish dishes were very good, and the chicken was average. Our server did a wonderful job of making sure we had everything we needed, and the view over the Grand River was amazing. I'm not sure we will be back, because, for the cost, we did not receive the stellar food expected."

  • "If you want to go for a great brunch, this is the place to go. The place is on the Grand River and watching the boats go by is wonderful. The wait staff was very accommodating and cheerful. We had a baby with us and my mother-in-law with a walker. The seating was great for both. The food was fabulous and omelets were made to order. Definately the place to go on Sunday! Highly recommended. There were other children as well and our granddaughter even got her first taste of salmon! She loved it."

  • "Nice place for special occasion but not even close to worth the money. When you pay $30-60 for an entre you would think you would be full afterwards. The shrimp was chewy and the steak was flavorless and kinda dry. My drink was empty for most of my meal they finally refilled me just before handing me the bill. I can finally say I ate there but like everyone else I know I wouldnt go back, to many other restaraunts in the area with better food and lower prices"

  • "The overall experience was fine. Areas in which Charley's could improve: 1. The table configuration in the area in which we were located resulted in our chairs being up against those of another table (ours was round, the other rectangular). There was some "unused space" adjacent to us but the rectangular table was "one small table" too long. The other side of our table was a narrow walk-way where wait staff and other guest had to pass in single file but often "brushed" the guests at our table. 2. The staff filing the buffet selections could not or did not keep up. There were a number of times that selections were "out" and guests either had to return later or have the food on their plates cool off. "

  • "We used to love this place for Sunday brunch but after a recent Mothers Day there I think we will be finding somewhere new. The view is great but inside the service and food have gone way down. Wait staff stood around and chatted so much my children noticed. The buffet was nothing great in fact it looked empty half the time. And nothing on the buffet stood out as tasting spectacular at all. The omlettes we ordered were very good though. But my absolute favorite moment of Mother's Day came when I turned around and saw a waiters pink boxers hanging out of his pants. That really roped the whole experience off. "

  • "Made reservations thru Open Table for a Saturday at 5:45 pm. The restaurant was packed due to college graduations downtown. It was obvious that they had seated way too many people without regard to their reservations. Waited quite a while for our table although we were offered a table outside in 55 degree weather. After being seated, we waited again for quite a length of time until our waitress noticed we were in her section. Entrees came out fast however, well before the salads. Not sure this restaurant can handle being busy."

  • "Our group of five had reservations for 5:30 (after GVSU graduation) on April 26. Some arrived a early to ensure we didn't lose our table, as graduation ran late. We all had seafood. The Potato Encrusted Whitefish was moist and delicious. The Snapper Milanese was very good. The Bouillabaisse was wonderful (but scallops were a bit overcooked). The Pasta Pagliara had an incredible garlic broth (but scallops were also overcooked). All in all a wonderful meal. Our server, Chris, was exceptional. The only thing I found interesting was that the Sunset Dinner selections (all $20 if ordered before 6:00) were not available. Why? Graduation (a lot of diners). Hmmm. Interesting. I guess you can't count on the $20 dinners if they're busy."
