The good stuff: Charcut is popular, trendy and puts out very good food in a nice ambiance. The bad stuff: the food is overpriced and the wine list is very limited.
The $90 steak in question is a bone-in New York strip offered at $45 per person/mimimum of 2 people, and you have to order the sides/potatoes, etc. extra. We were out for a special occasion and treating some friends so we had this steak and the whole fish (which at $25-$30 is well priced). The other food and drinks got our bill for 4 to $375, including tip.
It was a great evening but at those prices, I doubt I'll go back. Charcut provides there full menu past midnight which is incredibly rare in Canada. The burger is the best that there is, and the service, no matter the time of day, is touch notch. Table reservation wasn't good, uncomfortable and spacing too tight. Sat at the 2nd table from the window (4 tables x 2 seats). Servers had to serve at an angle. An incident occurred when my colleague got a close call with a bottom half in her face as the waiter served the window table. Talked to reception after why they didn't alternate seating arrangement in this section? 2 of 4 tables were not booked for the time period 11:30am-12:45pm. She didn't give a reply. Simply, the food was excellent, the service knowledgable and not intrusive and the atmosphere is lively. We went on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was full, which is great, I enjoy a lot of people in a restaurant, it makes it vibrant. I realize that tastes are subjective, especially food wise, but we enjoyed what we were served. I won't bother with details, after all that's the fun of a balanced menu, it will work for anyone, and the part of the enjoyment is in the selection process. We have eaten in many good restaurants, some live up to their reputation, some fail miserably ; this one deserves its acclaim. Like that there were several vegetable sides to add to the meal .. more than what I recall a couple years ago which was the last time we were there for dinner. It was a lot of fun to see a portion of what goes on to get the food ready. It was both entertaining and educational. The service was excellent the first night, but the second it was a bit slow. It really depended on the server you got. That said it was busy both nights so it was understandable. I got two variations of the Chorizo Verde. It was excellent both times. The broiled oysters are fantastic. The poutine is delicious as well. Each time we ate at the Chef's bar they brought us out samples of some of their house made sausage/cured meats. Charcut proved to be an excellent choice - the best waitress I think I've ever had, creative appetizers - a sampler; and family style entrees; pork chop, prime rib, and chicken. Everything was superb. The dessert sampler the waitress recommended was also a huge hit. This really was a dining experience and a wonderful way to show off Calgary. From the moment we were greeted to the excellent service from our waiter, this is a place i have already recommended to a dozen people! It was our first time dining here and our waiter was patient but friendly and on-top of things. The food was so fresh and mouth-wateringly delicious! Save room for dessert and do not opt to share the cheesecake. It is so good you will want more! And dont be afraid of the duck fat poutine. It is wonderful! The small valet parking sign was obscured by an over-size truck which was there the whole time we were at lunch. I wonder how many people gave up on the restaurant because they couldn't see the sign or park anyplace convenient?
Background music was too loud. It was like being at a rock concert. If I wanted a rock concert, I'd go to one.
