Diner Reviews
  • "Dinner and service were disappointing. Food was not hot and/or overcooked and waiter was condescending and uninterested in us."

  • "We introduced our friends who had just moved to Denver to Charcoal and they just loved it. Service was prompt and friendly. We enjoyed drinks and starters, dates wrapped in bacon were superb, beforehand in a pleasant sitting area and then were shown to a lovely table. A very attentive waiter and speedy food service. We just loved the menu choice and all and all a great evening with friends. The noise level was lively but not too loud for easy conversation."

  • "We went to Charcoal for my birthday. Our waitress was the perfect amount of friendly and attentive. We started with drinks, the martini had a hint of sweet pepper and my husband greatly enjoyed the muddled with pulp old fashioned. The brussel sprouts were delectable - a mix of soft-boiled egg, pistachio, duck confit and vinegar. We were quite pleased. For our main course, I had the Chilean sea bass - it was amazing. My husband had the trout and basically licked his plate. For dessert, he got the lavendar lemon cake and I had the ice wine, both, again delicious. With Denver touting so many foodie restaurants, we have noticed that not all are truly ones worthy of a second visit. Charcoal outdid itself, and we will return!"

  • "Charcoal is our new favorite restaurant. Every aspect of dining at Charcoals was outstanding. The service was excellent, and the food was terrific. We asked for our favorite appetizer, crispy Brussels Sprouts, and they were again excellent, even though they are not on the Brunch menu they made them for us. Excellent!"

  • "We're season subscribers to the Curious Theatre Company over at 11th and Acoma here in Denver. We regularly grab drinks and dinner before the play as it is only a two-block walk from the restaurant to the theatre. We have never had a bad meal or poor services at Charcoal. Consistency seems to be very challenging for many restaurants and, fortunately, it has not been an issue at Charcoal. Compelling menu, great staff and convenient location. I think the only caution is that is doesn't seem too appropriate for families. I'm sure the staff would be just wonderful but it's very much of an adult venue."

  • "We always enjoy Charcoal and took friends for their first time. I had a lovely Mojito cocktail and shared bacon-wrapped dates - always crispy and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food from steak to fish. We had dessert, which is unusual for us, and really enjoyed the lemon lavender cake and a chocolate mousse thing. Such a nice neighborhood place - but close to downtown. Bonus: easy parking on the street."

  • "people around us were yelling to be heard - nice that they have a valet"

  • "We had the gnocchi and the trout. Both were superb. The appetizer was not served quite as described on the menu but still good. Service on beverages was sloow..."

  • "Outstanding food. A bit noisy, especially for a party more than four"

  • "I really enjoyed the arugula and spinach salad - dressing was tasty and not overdone. The bread was served with olive oil. Since the bread was sweet-tasting, we both felt it needed butter instead. I got the pork entree; the pork was fairly tasty but the fiddlehead ferns were bitter. The wine pairing was very good. We decided on the tropical tart for dessert - it was awful. The crust was mushy and everything didn't blend together for a tasty dessert."

  • "My husband and I like the place for its location, interior comfort and excellent service regardless of who the waiter is, and, especially, well-prepared food. This time around we were seriously disappointed. Though the idea behind each dish was great and all the ingredients fresh (Brussels sprouts and arugula salad as appetizers, Mussels and Sea Bass as main courses), the amount of salt used in every single dish was exceeding ALL possible limits! If not the time limit (we were heading to the theater after the dinner), we would have returned ALL dishes to be redone."

  • "I live in the area but hadn't been in before. We had two different meals and appatizers to try things... All of it was fantastic. Will definitely be back frequently- I'd say at least every other week. They mentioned the menu is seasonal with quite a bit of change so it'll make it enjoyable to continually try new things. Can't wait to go back"

  • "I never get tired of the chicken liver mousse with homemade cucumber pickles on wonderful toasted bread."

  • "At a restaurant like this, with such a top quality chef, take a chance, and try something you wouldn't normally order. The chef is so good, he's sure to deliver a dining experience like you've not had before!"

  • "Excellent food, good service and a nice feel. Will be back."

  • "Our dinner with another couple was cut short when they had to cancel. No matter, we went anyway and were glad we did. The appetizer of crispy brussel sprouts and fresh bread got us started off nicely. My wife enjoyed a glass of pinot noir, but I didn't drink anything that evening. When our entrees arrived (she had the seabass with sardines and I had the pork belly hamburger) we fell silent. She enjoyed the fish, but kept eating the truffle fries off my plate. The large and impressive hamburger might be the best I've ever had (which is really saying something). The service was excellent and we enjoyed every aspect of the meal."

  • "My husband & I had a lovely dinner while sitting at the restaurant's bar. The smoked wild boar sausage dish was wonderful. Marcio (sp?) was a superb bartender, friendly and made a perfect martini. I have dined here many times for lunch. The restaurant never disappoints. The food is always fresh, interesting but with a comfort aspect, a great mix of flavors and textures."

  • "When I mentioned to the waitress that my favorite item was no longer on the brunch menu, she quickly said, "oh, we can still make that for you." I was delighted! The green chile is excellent, but so is everything else I've eaten at Charcoal. I enjoy introducing it to friends and out-of-town guests. All have shared my love of the food and service. Only downside is that it can get noisy when crowded, so I tend to go early for brunch in particular."

  • "Had lunch with a couple of friends and I tried their food as well. Everything I tried was excellent! My friend had the green chili which was amazing the meet was charcoaled and it just melted in your mouth. My other friend had the white cheddar cheeseburger and that was perfect. I had the salmon salad and it was to die for."

  • "Charcoal is one of my favorites. The changing menu is always well-constructed and they have a decent wine list. This visit, I went there on a weeknight for a fairly early dinner. A little noise from the happy hour crowd, but not too bad."

  • "Friends took us to Charcoal about a year ago and we have been back a number of times. We have recommended the restaurant to quite a few people and it's all good. Our friends have thanked us for the recommendation and we truly enjoy the quality of the food and service. I had the Sea Bass this last visit and it was excellent. The time before the meat entree that I ordered was for me a little under cooked. Not only did our server have my meal re-done but he also gave us a complimentary appetizer while my entree was being cooked to perfection. It's a great place."

  • "I have been to Charcoal a number of times. My 1st visit, I was so impressed with everything from the space to the service to the food. I thought, perhaps, I was caught up in the hype of a new restaurant as I sometimes will be and then it fades. I returned and found what I thought a year ago, was holding true. I ordered the Roasted Local Free Range Chicken Breast. / potato puree, crispy Brussels sprouts. Do not let the simplicity of the meal fool you. This chicken was unbelievably tender the flavor as outstanding. The potato puree complimented the chicken so well and then there came the Brussels sprouts. I am almost embarrassed to admit how fast I moved them from plate to move and only wish I could have more. One of my top 2 in the city!"

  • "This is my third time to Charcoal. The food was good but not quite as good as the first two times I'd eaten here. The service was excellent and I'll definitely give it another try."

  • "A friend of mine lives in NYC and she was complaining that Denver just doesn't have the quality of food that NY does... whatever! So I took her to my favorite brunch spot and she had to begrudgingly admit that yes, Denver has some quality food..."

  • "We enjoyed a Sunday morning breakfast. The Swedish pancakes are crepe-like little pancakes served on lingonberry preserves. Amazing! The scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and potato pancakes were outstanding, according to my husband. We'll definitely be back for breakfast again, and have also scheduled a dinner one evening as well. The restaurant is inviting and comfortable, and the service was perfect."

  • "Its a shame when you can't give a restaurant uniformly great reviews for food, ambience and service. My wife and I decided to try this restaurant after reading the mostly favorable reviews and we're glad we did. We'll try Charcoal again. We had to wait 25 minutes beyond our 7:30 Open Table reservation, and we sat at the bar and looked out over the restaurant. We were seated at a nice table near the open kitchen. A soup starter was meh and not hot enough. Lamb shank was excellent, as was the steak frites (sans frites in favor of mashed potatoes). But this is where the service fell apart. I couldn't even get anyone's attention ask for a steak knife. Lack of service continued through the remainder of the meal."

  • "All in all a nice dining experience. Service was a little slow but it was a Saturday so what can you expect. My review of Open Table's Noise Level is a one star. If the upper range on Noise Level is "Don't Recall" you have to be kidding, right? The next level down is "Energetic" which is also misleading at best. So, let me help you out: One Star: Quiet Two Stars: Moderate Three Stars: Loud Four Stars: Can't Hear Yourself Think I would put Charcoal somewhere between three and four stars. Really, I go out to dinner to spend time with my wife. If I can't hear he and she can't really hear me that kind of defeats the purpose, right. More restaurants need to invest in noise abatement."

  • "The Saturday brunch tasting menu; the "RARAKA" with honey smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, sour cream; and the bottomless mimosas and bloody marys were special. Wait person was friendly and fun, attentive, but not in your face. Try Charcoal, you'll like it."

  • "One of the best restaurants I've eaten in in Denver. It is rare that I go into a restaurant and everything on the menu looks wonderful. I will be back to try everything I haven't yet ordered!"

  • "After a weekend of skiing and in transit to the airport, we found this wonderful restaurant. There were 8 of us. We order the 5 course family style option for brunch. It was enough to share but not to much. Service was fast. I recommend this restaurant. ."

  • "We tried this place out for restaurant week and were very impressed! Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. One of the servers brought me a little sample of the gnocchi after I had asked a couple of questions about it - it was delicious! We had the flat iron steaks and they were cooked and seasoned perfectly. I'm from Texas and somewhat of a steak snob, but they definitely met my standards. My boyfriend especially enjoyed the salted caramel creme brulee for dessert. We look forward to dinning there again soon!"

  • "Enjoyed our Restaurant Week dinner so much! Complex flavors (wild boar ragout, smoky salmon "pastrami" and to die for chocolate tart with Meyer lemon) were so evident. Wait staff was friendly and accommodating without "hovering". Ambience was noticeably noisy at times due, I think, to open ceiling but loved the energy of this lovely little gem! Will definitely be back!"

  • "Lots of nuggets on their menu. Recommend the gnocchi and wild mushrooms."

  • "Went here for restaurant week. Extremely disappointed that the RW menu at Charcoal didn't match the website menu. The food was good, nothing outstanding except the arancini which were fabulous. Gnocchi was good. My main problem with Charcoal is the smoky smell inside. I know it's called Charcoal and it does a lot of flame grilling but it really was too much. My clothes smelled and I had a headache the next day. Time to replace the filters, fellas. Also, they were a bit full of themselves - someone I assume was the owner approached us at the end of our meal and bragged that they're "strictly word of mouth and always full " (not true for that night or in our case)."

  • "Although the wait staff was excellent and We loved the beet salad and cream brûlée offered on the 5280 menu. But unfortunately both the salmon dish and the flatiron steak was VERY salty ...not impressed with this visit!"

  • "A perfect spot for a birthday lunch for a friend. The salmon was delicious and the house salad was plentiful and full of surprises, like pine nuts and shaved romano cheese. The restaurant was quiet, the food and service superb."

  • "First time to this restaurant. Everything was I had been told. Really good service...attentive and pleasant. Steak was tasty and cooked as I requested. Would eat here again."

  • "We chose from the Restaurant Week menu and were very pleased with our meals. The wild mushroom ragout was excellent, and the smoked salmon ("pastrami") garnished with long curls of carrot and parsnip, was outstanding. One surprise: the simple black molded chairs were very comfortable. Our server was gracious and attentive; it was not her fault that we had to wait a while to order wine & food (two extra place settings were left on our table, cueing her that other diners were still to come). While waiting, we enjoyed watching the open kitchen at work. We definitely plan to return to Charcoal for brunch, and for dinner in the spring/summer. It's a casual and comfortable place to enjoy a generous glass of wine and excellent, interesting food."

  • "We eat out a lot like New Yorkers, here's out take: Food - arinaci superb, beet salad so so, steak one of best but salty which I like for steak, gnocchi great but a salt blast that even I couldn't take, lemon tart was block of ganache like awful dry mud and a tiny drop of lemon, salted carmel cream brule one of best ever but needs balance to salt again Service - service was crazy slow. One of those places you hand your credit card to when they take your dessert dishes. Atmosphere - very busy. room too open, just plain unexciting, like ugly sheets covering windows? Totally uninviting compared to place like Root Down or the like Overall: probably would not go again. too salty, slow, pricey, boring, claustrophobic"
