  • "We were seated by a table next to a dish clearing station, despite having a reservation. The filet mignon was not seasoned at all and was bland to say the least. If it was just one of our meals, I can understand an error. However, it was all of them. The ribs were also mediocre. The food is vastly overpriced and simply not worth it. The service was mediocre at best. If you want a NY steakhouse, stick with Sparks, Mortons or Ruth's Chris. Frankly, Outback Steakhouse is a MUCH better option for steak than Char."

From the friendly smiles of the ladies at the bar during the welcome cocktail to the knowledgeable staff tending to our dinner table, our evening was superb. The bone-in steaks were delicious and cooked perfectly medium-rare, while the extensive wine list gave us plenty of choices. Thank you Char!"

  • "If you're an early bird or looking for a twofer....go to Denny's. If you want the best steak, outstanding food recommendations, world class educated staff, the possible sight of a celebrity, and a meal you'll be talking about for a few days...make a reservations a few days in a advance and go to Char. Ask for Justin as your waiter and then ask him what you should eat. Bring your wallet and pallet."

  • "We have visited Char in the past and this visit was not up to its usual standards. One recommendation we have is to make sure not to sit at the stop of the stairs. The dirty dish station is off the dining room and is loud it is very distracting when trying to have a conversation- the sound of dishes and loud staff conversations."

  • "Char is an upscale steakhouse charging NYC prices. The food is very good and the waiters think nothing of recommending 85 dollar bottles of wine and expensive specials. So it was quite a relief that throughout March they had a restaurant week midweek 30 dollar per person price fix. You can not go wrong getting a soup/ salad , entree ( including a petite filet) with two sides to share and a dessert. We have taken advantage of this deal twice now and it is well worth the money. Call ahead or check char's Facebook page to see if it is still being offered. If you choose to order off the regular menu you will not be disappointed especially if you have an expense account."

  • "Dinner was just ok for me. Nice restaurant and plenty of service staff. Had the wedge salad to start, Kansas strip steak and a few side. Steak was a bit over cooked and didn't have much flavor. Don't order the mash potatoes. They tasted plain. French fries and cream spinach were really good. Not worth the price of the meal. Could have got the same thing at outback for much less."

  • "They look and feel like a high end Steakhouse in the dining room but don't seem to know how to be high end in the kitchen. French onion soup was delicious but would have been better if it was hot. The Caesar salad was mediocre. My totally bland filet mignon (ordered medium) came out luke warm and after sending it back it came back warmer but never hot. The thing I loved best about the valet parking is they some how have managed to take over city parking meters on the street with signs taped over the meters that say no parking 5PM & 2AM. I think they meant to say 5PM - 2AM but how is it that a city street with free parking after 6PM now is a $7 valet spot? For the same money we could have gone to Ruth Chris and had an amazing meal."

  • "This was our second time at Char. The first time we sat downstairs and had a great meal. This time we sat upstairs right next to where the staff inputs the orders. You felt like they were at your table with you. There should not be a table there or move the computer to where no customers are sitting. The food was good but no onions or onion rings at a steakhouse and the mash potatoes were cold. I would go to Copper Canyon over Char for a steak."

  • "I recently dined at char with my family paid $7 to valet, not too expensive, worth it not to have to walk with my elderly parents, unfortunately when I went to retrieve my car the valet wasn't present, I waited and when the valet came back he looked at my ticket and then politely told me I could get my own car it was about 100 feet away, I was shocked by this and returned to the restaurant to get the rest of my party of 5 . I mentioned this to char they said they don't hire the valet, red bank boro hires the valet. This to me is not proper service for this type of establishment. I Love Char but will not return, front end management did handle the situation properly and the town and valet company did not return my calls."

The filet mignon was sensational! Cooked the way I like it and extremely tender and flavorful. Creme brulee was also excellent. Will certainly consider going back when I need a red meat fix. Only negative comments - had to ask for the restaurant week menu. That should have been given automatically. Even when asked for it took the hostess a few minutes to produce it. Also didn't feel the waitress was as well trained as I'd expect in a place at this price range. Busboy however was very professional."

  • "I went to Char when it was Ashes & it's an amazing change! Food was great but it was over priced! NY price which was ridiculous! I go to a lot of Nice Restaurants from Chakra, Chart House, 3 West, Old Mill Inn, Tabor Tavern, Gratto, Huntley Tavern, Roots (and their prices are outrages as well), pazzo pazzo, etc. All excluding Roots have the same style menu & meats yet are priced right. I had the $40.00 surf and turf & at another location I got more with my meal for the same size/cut steak & lobster than I did here. I go to a lot of Nice Restaurants from Chakra, Chart House, 3 West, Old Mill Inn, Tabor Tavern, Gratto, Huntley Tavern, Roots (and their prices are outrages as well), pazzo pazzo, etc. And they are all priced right for location"

If you want the same experience, first make a reservation (open Table) then request Pierre our server, he knew the menu inside and out, we followed his lead and the experience was unforgettable. Lobster mac and cheese to die for, Steaks cooked to perfection Oscar style my preference, Grilled vegetables, Lobster Avocado salad, the Bread Presentation, I can't say enough about this place, all of the staff professional and friendly. Can't wait to return,"

  • "We enjoyed our first visit to Char so much when Restaurant Week in Red Bank started that we decided to go back again. We were not disappointed. Our filet (beef) was excellent and very flavorful. I tried one of the salads this time which was good. The bread basket that is carried to each table has the best selection of rolls and popovers. Char had a large wait staff on hand to take care of every table; water, bread, removing used plates,etc. Very efficient! Again, however, the $30 pre fixe menu was not mentioned by our waitress. What a nice town Red Bank is for a walk after to burn off some of those extra calories from dessert!"

  • "We keep trying this restaurant because it looks like it should be good. But 2 out of 4 steaks my husband has ordered have not been good. One was full of gristle and this time his steak came out extremely rare even though he asked for medium. Pepper was not offered on the table and we had to ask for it for our salad. On the plus side the mushroom soup and dessert were delicious. Then we had a long wait to get the check. Not sure we will be returning here."

  • "We had 7:30 reservations but when we got there we were asked to wait for about 10 minutes. 20 minutes later they take us to our seat where we walk throughout the whole restaurant and pass many open tables for 2. Then by the time we sat down till we got our first course was about 45 minutes. Service took a very long time to get started but once started, things went well. Food was awesome and I'd recommend it. Service wasn't *terrible*, just not what you'd expect for a restaurant like this."

  • "We decided to try Char during Red Bank's Restaurant Week (Feb. 2014). We had enjoyed some wine at the bar first before heading upstairs to the main dining room for dinner. There was a lot more space upstairs than we thought! They have a bar upstairs as well. We were seated at a table near the windows that over look Broad Street. The only negative I would mention is that our waitress did not mention the Restaurant Week Special Menu until we asked (after her lengthy description about the regular menu.) The French Onion Soup was delicious but the filet mignon was perfection! Family style mashed potatoes and a nice dish of thin green beans with almonds were served as well. The desserts were fabulous."
