  • "Reservation was at 8:30pm on Sat. before St. Patrick's Day. Water was poured but server did not come to table for almost 15 minutes while other diners who sat down after us were taken care of. Once server appeared with apologies, rest of service was very good. Oysters and appetizer special of papperdalle pasta with mushroom ragu were exceptional. Filet, wild mushroom risotto and braised kale were all very good. Date and mascarpone torte with sweet potato ice cream was fabulous. Though there was a good deal of noise and activity associated with St. Patrick's Day revelers at the bar, we enjoyed a lovely anniversary dinner. Would recommend this restaurant."

  • "My group of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Char. The bar was really loud and energetic which is why we were glad we were put off to the side in another room which was much quieter. It is a little awkward that there really is no separation between the restaurant and the hotel. If you enjoy pickle martinis ask for one here even though it is not on the menu, they are fantastic. We started with oysters which everyone loved, beet salad (could be skipped, was really small and nothing special) but all of us had filets that were delicious especially with the horseradish mustard sauce. Three sides of kale, macaroni & cheese, spaghetti squash were enough to share between 4 people and were really good! Dessert was 2 plates - 3 scoops of ice cream!"

  • "We have been to Char a few times, we drove from Toronto to visit the Museum of Play. We make Char a must go spot every time. The beef tartare is the best I've had in North America. Keep up the good work! We had 6 kids and they were able to accomdate us in the party room."

  • "Everyone in our party had Filet and they were all perfectly done and delicious! There are several sauces to choose from - the smoky blue cheese and bacon butter melted over the steak was fantastic! The sides are ala carte, but family style so there is more than enogh for 2 in a portion. We had the potato and celery root gratin which was very good. The desserts are made inhouse and there are several to choose from - I highly recommend the spiced creme brulee."

The sommelier dropped off a wine list but offered no expertise/recommendation and the waiter knew little about the menu or wines. Overall experience was pricey and food just so-so. The wood burning grill provides the differentiator when it comes to flavor and getting a unique steak experience. Our server was enthusiastic and had the perfect amount and timing of visits. Methodical table clearing by the staff, but not obtrusive at all. Great atmosphere and the bar is great for before and/or after dinner drinks. 9.5/10"

  • "Settled for (bland) side salads since they were out 2 of 3 main appetizers listed. What? I had a Filet Mignon - tender & tasty. My wife had the Lobster Risotto entre and felt that it too was tasty. Very poor presentation. I had a Patron margarita that was just okay. It came in what appeared to be a cheap water/iced tea glass, not a cocktail, goblet, or margarita glass. Again, not what one would expect. Very cordial and friendly waitress. Pricey: We didn't feel the experience justified the cost. Bottom line: Nice restaurant, not a great view (should be on the top floor overlooking the cityscape), okay food, good service, okay drinks, high price. Likely won't frequent it again unless invited there as part of a gathering of friends."

  • "It was Valentines Day and I wanted to take my fiance nice. I have been here several time for business meetings and thought it wouls be a good place to eat. The first thing the hostess did wrong was seat people with later reservations before us. We went to the bar to order a drink was was ignored by the bartender, had to be cashed out by the barback and sat in the reception area by the main door where the draft from incoming people was, at times, unbearably cold. I don't even usually get cold but it was that bad. Food was good but they over cooked my lamb chops- which they came out to apologize for... And oh yea, we had the extra special view of guests using the pool walking through the lobby. VERY Romantic."

Bar was fun - we purchased the breakfast the next day and the service was extremely slow. Did not seem to have enough wait staff. Buffet was not repleneshed - ordered off the menu and was good but again, service was extremely slow."

The biggest problem was the cold air that poured in every time someone came in from outside...the restaurant obviously was aware of the problem because they had a small space heater (which did nothing). Not very impressive to eat a $50 steak next to a $29 heater."

  • "One of the best meals I have had in years. Had ahi-tuna encrusted in sesame seeds as an appetizer and ice-burg wedge. We had a nice view through the window of an outdoor fireplace. 16 oz rib eye and creamed spinach. Fine cabernet. Great service. Steak as good or better than the finest steakhouses I have eaten at. Wife's filet mignon was also perfect. Waiter advised what was good and I am glad we listened and ordered the Ahi. We stayed at the hotel for a fun weekend."

  • "We mainly chose this restaurant based on its ambiance & modern feel for girls nite out. We were deeply disappointed when we were seated in the very back. It looked to be an extension of the restaurant & had the feel of a hotel conference room or a cafeteria. The decor was bad and it was very quiet we had to whisper to not disturb other guests. Luckily we asked to be seated elsewhere and they were able to accommodate us to another location. Char should really think about something different for this back room. We were told it's used to accommodate large parties so they should not seat a party of three in the nose bleed section and do something with the decor! It totally does not match the rest of the restaurant! Service/food was awesome!"

  • "The drinks, dinner, dessert, and service was out of this world! My Martini was spot on!! My filet mignon was so tender I could cut it with a fork & the carmelized onion and sherry sauce was spactacular! I also tried the horseradish sauce and that was even better!! I also had shrimp which tasted great with the horseradish sauce and the potato and leek gratin which was okay... My Spiced Creme Brulee was out of this world! Our server Mike was so wonderful too!! The next day we had the breakfast buffet and that was out of this world as well and our server Alisha was so wonderful and made our breakfast so enjoyable!"

  • "This is my 2nd visit to Char since its renovation. The atmosphere is elegant without "intruding". We were pleased to be seated by a window overlooking a large gas fire in the courtyard. The menu is not extensive, but offers enough selection to please all 7 in our party. Our lunch entrees were all delicious - I particularly enjoyed my roasted turkey club, but could as easily have enjoyed that day's wood grilled flat bread. Dessert was outstanding - the richest flourless chocolate concoction I have ever tasted with a dollop of cream cheese ice cream. The attentive wait staff quickly caught on that we were celebrating a birthday and provided an unexpected candle to the celebrant's dessert. I eagerly look forward to my next visit!"

  • "We had brunch here on Sunday 1/19/14. The ambience and decor is fabulous-minus the loin cloth lighting. I ordered the heirloom tomato salad, which was nothing special but adequate. It was served with croutons and I would've preferred crostini. I also ordered the stuffed French toast which was good itself, but the fresh berries and coarse granola were delicious. My niece ordered the griddle cakes and after having one bite, I wished I had ordered them. They were excellent! My husband had the steak and eggs-he enjoyed it very much. My mother had the crab cake benedict. The crab cakes were fishy and cool, and the hollandaise was too thin and bland. I didn't have coffee but I heard it was excellent."

  • "We had the Grilled Stuffed Calamari for an appetizer--delicious. Then, I had a sirloin cooked to a perfect medium, with a side of potato/leek au gratin--Really, really good. My friend had the pasta special that came with duck sausage in a tomato ragu. We were very impressed. Service was great and, for the meal you get, the prices are more than reasonable. Definitely check it out!"

  • "I've had steaks at the old Roadhouse grill that were as good as the steak here! I paid $50 for the 18oz bone-in prime NY strip steak and it was ok at best. I ordered it rare, it came medium well. Just not what I expected for what I paid. I should have gone to Black & Blue for a good steak."

  • "The food could not have been better. You may have to leave your right arm *and* first born at the door, but you will get what you pay for, and sometimes that's okay. Fantastic, no regrets. Wait staff was professional and personable, and they let us stay three hours plus without any hint of pressure or fuss. Last time we were there was Valentine's Day. Different menu, equally good."

  • "We felt most welcomed when our server put down two glasses of champagne and with a lovely smile wished us a happy anniversary. The food was glorious! My husband and I shared a squid ink pasta with chunks of king crab claws. We also shared a thick and perfectly done rib eye with a blue cheese and bacon topping. It was the best rib eye we ever tasted. The sides were fine... And the sorbet for dessert tasty and refreshing. Thanks to our server and the chef for a truly memorable evening. Kudos to Char!   • "I have a new favorite spot for our rare date night dinners! Everything was just awesome! Probably the best meal I have had in Rochester! Simone, the sommelier, was fantastic! The overall service was just great! We had a scallop appetizer that was phenomenal! The scallops were tender and the flavor was unique and delish! Then we each had the 5oz filet. I had it with the crab leg and my husband had the lobster tail. Both were served out of the shell for ease of eating and were so good. At first we were confused because the seafood was not served with drawn butter, but as soon as we tasted it we understood why! It was prepared perfectly and needed nothing! And the filets were cooked perfectly as well. We will definitely be back!"

  • "I've eaten there twice in a week. The first time was truly wonderful but the second time ruined my good feeling about the place. First time, excellent food and attentive wait staff. Second time, both food and servibuttered bad. Coffee was served STONE COLD, the soup was tasteless (I didn't eat it), and the service was a joke. My husband and I were actually embarrassed in front of our guest. It took us two painful hours to get through lunch. In fairness, my husband's sandwich was okay and the desserts were good, although the selection was limited because they had run out of what I wanted. I'd consider going back for dinner only because I assume the chef and manager are there then. The second string dropped the ball."

  • "This was a very special occasion and had heard that the steak was unbelievable, so very excited to try it! We were a party of 4, and after spending $300.00 we left very disappointed. The steak was dry and tasteless, even those who ordered rare, the soup was fair, over priced, and sides were nothing outstanding . A great meal at half the price can be obtained at many restaurants in this City, once the flair is over I don't see how this restaurant will withstand based on food quality. Staff could of been more helpful, attentive and friendly. (Instead of trying to be impressed with themselves). I would not visit again, and do not recommend."

  • "This was our first dinner at Char. I have to say it was the the best dinner experience I have had! We enjoyed a wonderful bottle of wine before dinner in the lounge area in the comfortable area by the fire. Brian who took care of us at that point was incredible. Helpful, friendly and very welcoming. At our table we were greeted by more very friendly and personable staff. Our calamari appetizer was spectacular, followed by salad and lobster bisque which was amazing! My husband and I both had the filet with caramelized blue cheese sauce and side of brussel sprouts. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed our meal and the whole experience. The ambiance, food, staff is exceptional. We live just around the corner so can't wait to go back!"
