  • "My wife and I went to Char based on curiosity and we were not disappointed. I ordered the scallops and she had the steak frites. Overall very good (although the scallops were a little over caramelized for my taste). Will definitely go back and try the grilled octopus. The drinks were expertly mixed and the highlight of the evening."

  • "Food was very good, though portions were quite small. Service was attentive but not overbearing until we finished our entrees, at which point it slowed down considerably. The restaurant at that point was almost full, and it took quite a while for dessert to arrive, and then we couldn't get the waiter's attention to get the bill. It was also noisy enough that our party of 3 felt like we were shouting to talk. We will return, though at a quieter time. "

  • "We were looking for a place to eat before a show at The Capitol Thtr in Portchester. Well what a great find this was!!! The food was fabulous, I loved the specialty cocktails and the food was awesome! I had the Edamame dumplings which were delicious (though I wished they were steamed - they are fried) and the Seared Tuna Niçoise salad which was to die for. Really well presented and taste was magnificent. My friends and I had great meals and topped it off with desserts that we really shouldn't have had but who could resist. Service was very attentive. And they have a parking lot which is always key. Truly a wonderful evening! "

  • "We have been to this restaurant before and had a few really good meals but the special (very small) menu on Mothers Day was not up to par. Also, I had I know there was to be an abbreviated menu we would have chosen a different place, I wish it had been clear on Open Table. One dish was so salty I had to send it back, which I never do and the replacement was exactly the same. We will return another time when the menu is normal but this was a disappointment. "

  • "We enjoyed our first time try of Char. We were just a group of four and managed to secure a table within the inner room section of the restaurant. This was relevant because the overall noise level of the restaurant is high - and not a buzz of energy "high"; just loud because they have absolutely nothing within the walls of the wood interior to absorb noise. A larger group will have difficulty having a full table conversation. As such, we will return but I would highly recommend the owners consider adding something to the decor to reduce the noise level, particularly as it seems like they do cater to large groups."

  • "Char is a wonderful spot which offers bold and delicious cuisine and a vibrant atmosphere. We went on a Friday night--the joint was packed. Our server was attentive, informed and seasoned in the art of making sure diners choose well. Great service is a sign of great things to come food-wise and we were not disappointed. Every dish was a hit: the pea ravioli with mint, edamame dumplings, pan roasted sea bass, crispy cod. They also have a good wine selection --and a lot by the glass which is really nice to see. The restaurant is definitely convivial--i.e. on the louder side--but everyone at our table and all around us were totally enjoying themselves. Without a doubt we will be returning to Char."

  • "This was our second visit to Char and it was on Easter Sunday. The waiter was inattentive and we even had to ask him for the specials for him to even offer. The first time we went the service was outstanding as was the food so perhaps it was a bad night because it was a holiday."

  • "This is a very energetic restaurant with carefully crafted dishes. Bar is fun -try the Char-not overly sweet. Hosted a nearly 2 and a half hour dinner for a group of clients and each of us had a remarkable dinner. No one wanted to leave. I love the frugal with fig salad, the cod dish and the french toast bread pudding was amazing. Restaurant can be noisy but our corner table was perfect this past Saturday night."

  • "food was delicious-b/w the 4 of us we had 4 apps spinach and pear salad, octopus,&something with chorizo which were all excellent.main courses were equally as delicious-salmon,cod,chicken & another fish. my issue was with the service which i thought had an attitude: 1st the hostess tried to seat us twice in the smaller room next to 2 huge parties when there were plenty of tables for 4 in the other room.the waiter overfilled our wine glasses & then asked "do we want another bottle?" this is a lousy trick.then, because it was passover (a jewish holiday observed by many in the new york area)I couldn't eat barley that was served with my dinner.2 sub something else i would have to pay a surcharge,although it was 4 relig reasons. also v. noisy "

  • "We are generally tolerant of delays on a Saturday night, but our experience at Char overtaxed all patience. While appetizers arrived fairly fast, we received no entrees for more than an hour. We were not alone: diners from different tables began talking about the delay as wait staff repeatedly apologized and said our food would be right out. After nearly two hours, we finally left our table to go home (as had another larger group already) and, as we were near the door, our food finally came out of the kitchen and we were urged to stay. Unfortunately, the food was marked mainly by its saltiness. The restaurant was apologetic and cut our bill by 50 percent. This was our first time at Char ... Hopefully, just hit it on an off-night."

  • "There were four of us and we could actually talk and hear one another. This is a great restaurant to go to if you want a delicious dinner ... gumbo the best, scallops perfectly cooked along with the other fish dishes, who would know that chicken could taste so good and you simply can't avoid the bread pudding dessert ... pastry chef certainly has created a very special ending to your meal. Service couldn't have been nicer, lovely atmosphere around the fireplace. Certainly would return again ... a nice change of pace from the noisy restaurants in Greenwich and ... they have plenty of parking!!!! Also a wonderful place for a family brunch."

  • "We thought everything was just okay. The service was good, but we found the menu a bit dull. And that was the new spring menu. There just wasn't anything we were excited to order. I would have liked to have some lighter entree choices like sandwiches, maybe ,, there isn't even a burger on the menu. We just found it uninspired and a little boring"

  • "Went to this restaurant twice and both times it was amazing. First time we sat at the bar and meet the chef. He gave us great recommendations for dinner. I had the chicken, it was juicy and delicious. My boyfriend had the Lamb Bolognese -- OMG to die for!! Great atmosphere and the food is delish.. oh and I would also recommend getting the bread pudding for desert you won't regret it!!! Loved it so much the first time brought a group back for a friends birthday dinner."

  • "The owner walked around and introduced himself to diners and asked about how everything was. I am a frequent diner in the area, and it is a rarity to see this. This is what is missing in many of the restaurants today...hospitality. The food was excellent and the accommodated my dietary needs. I found the owner and his staff to be very professional and that is why I will absolutely return and recommend this restaurant to my many friends."

I had the Duck and Goat Cheese Bruschette appetizer, Char Grilled Hanger Steak and French Toast Bread Pudding all were delicious. Especially the Bread Pudding. It was lunch during the week so the room was quiet in general."

  • "We're planning a private event, so we had dinner here first to check it out. The good news is that the food was delicious (the spicy shrimp appetizer is a must, my filet mignon was perfect) the service was very friendly and attentive, and the decor is striking. It was a little noisier than I'd like, but that's true of most places these days. Our only true complaint was that it's very cold inside. In fact, the woman's bathroom thermostat actually read 55 degrees! Apparently, the owners plan to revamp the heating/cooling system this spring. They opened in July 2013, and this is their first winter (and a bad one at that), so this came as an unpleasant surprise to them. If they get that issue fixed, this place would be nearly perfect."

  • "Despite sub-zero temperatures and perhaps because of them we were looking for a warm, welcoming atmosphere with delicious food. Char fit te bill. The decor is lovely, a fireplace, great food and a very attentive waiter. A great night all around. Other restaurants have been tried in this locale and all have failed. I think the curse has been broken with Char."
