Char No. 4Great food, service "off night"Char No. 4 is one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, with consistently "very good" food and friendly service. They're good with reservations, meaning you don't wait for 15 minutes despite having made a reservation--a.k.a. prompt seating. The four of us enjoyed our dining experience, though the restaurant is somewhat noisy. If you're into a quiet spot, this isn't the place.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways delightfulThis is a great spot for a date or dinner with friends, as the food, drinks, and service are all 4 star. The one caveat is that the main dining room is VERY loud, so be prepared to yell. Have a bourbon cocktail (try the Hound Dog with grapefruit and mint) and definitely do not miss the lamb pastrami appetizer! This restaurant is a meat lovers paradise, and well priced.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSoft shell crab speciala great way to enjoy this seasonal fave - sammy, beer and a shot5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMthe food knocks my socks off :)my wife and i have eaten here several times. every time has greeted us with a flavor explosion and something innovative. the food is very accessible, but it is way more complex, varied, and deep than your average american-influenced eatery.
We had the soft-shell crab sandwich with slaw and also a side of the bbq baked beans. sounds 'pedestrian' right? WRONG. i have never experienced so much flavor on one sandwich. the slaw was smoky and chipotle-ey (it's a word, trust me). the beans were sweet, hearty, and satisfying. yum.
our server was also very knowledgable, polite, and accommodating.
all-around - a great experience.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMeven though this restauranteven though this restaurant is in a so so location the food makes it worth the visit!5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat BrunchInstead of overcharging for too much food, price was right for excellent food.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThe brunch was yummy--unpretentiousThe brunch was yummy--unpretentious but creative. I had the specials: beet and bourbon cured lox with homemade poppy cream cheese on brioche and French toast sticks with maple custard (as an app for the table). Having custard instead of syrup means more sticks to the French toast sticks! The lox was something special. The greens were bitter dandelion type, which I quite enjoyed though for everyone. My friends enjoyed their eggs and grits breakfasts, though said the grits are grainier than they are used to. I enjoyed the biscuit bites I stole. The booths are a little dark in the front room and noise level is "energetic", but that didnt bother me. The back room has lots of natural light but can only seat parties of 4 or fewer.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome food!! Service wasAwesome food!! Service was a little slow, but it gave us more time to sip on our bourbon - unique, interesting and delicious cocktails, reasonably priced. Would definitely dine here again.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMA terrific restaurantThe quality of the food is excellent. Wait staff is knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. Their knowledge of the vast array of bourbons is impressive and very accurate. A true favorite5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMbourbon heavenGreat place for bourbon afficionados Food menu limited but what was available was excellent5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic Friday LunchWe had a great lunch on a Friday. Food was fantastic. Waiter was wonderful. Bartender was a huge help navigating the drinks list! His recommendations were a huge hit!
Will definitely go back for dinner!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFavorite spot in the neighborhoodChar No. 4 is consistently my go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. Their menu is always interesting, and the dishes were wonderful. The Wild Boar Sausage currently on the menu is spectacular. Service and knowledge of the staff is impressive. The bartenders and waiters study the menu and whiskey list and can explain them all in detail.
This place is great because of their acknowledgment of food allergies. They always have a gluten-free option (usually more than one) and the servers know whether a dish has gluten in it or if it could be made without it. They also have multiple vegetarian dishes on the menu as well.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBourbon Bloody & Biscuit BenedictI love coming to Char No. 4 for brunch. I'm always torn between the biscuits benedict which are served with bacon gravy (in lieu of hollandaise), and the bacon cheddar grits with poached eggs, which are served with fresh green onions. Either way I always have to get a bourbon bloody mary which always comes a bit pickly and salty...just how I like it. The coffee is strong. The food is reasonably priced for the neighborhood and quality. Best of all you can (and should) make reservations online and just stroll in at brunch time. I'm there at least every other weekend. Yumm.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, but very loud.Food was very tasty, but the noise in the restaurant was so loud it was hard to have any sort of conversation. Also, we were seated at a table that was just too small for our party of five.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMCan't get enough of this place! My boyfriend and I dine here 2-3x a month and have not be disappointed yet. We just celebrated his 28th birthday there with delicious Manhattan's and steak to match. 5 stars all around!4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is the second time thereThis is the second time there and I can confirm the positive impression I had last week. Food is consistently good, neat in presentation, although a kind of overpriced along with the cocktails available for brunch. The one I tasted this Sunday was definitely not my best choice but the other lime cocktail(s) I tried was excellent. I'll be back in other time for the whiskey tasting and check the crowd of evening/night4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMSmith Street GemHighly recommend, especially for a party of 4, seated in one of the amazingly comfortable booths. Most restaurants of this quality and price range tend to forgo comfortable seating for visually appealing but rickety/vintagey, design forward furnishing. Whether this choice is for budget reasons or to enable a 2-hr turnaround of tables, whatever the reasons, after eating at Char No. 4, I'll take more notice of "comfort level of seating" when giving my opinion of a dining experience. My dining partners had 1 glass of wine, a cocktail for me, an entree each, shared an appetizer, two desserts. Total bill w/ tip = $215. Last words: Perfect portions. Able to speak freely w/o shouting. Must order: SMOKED HALF CHICKEN. Unforgettable.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, the food was deliciousAs always, the food was delicious and the staff was excellent.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and bourbon were amazing..Food and bourbon were amazing.. It's pretty loud but then it again it was a full house! I'd go back.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMEach bite melted in our mouths!Char No. 4 is now officially the top of my list of favorite restaurants! I live in Brooklyn and I've tried a good many of the amazing restaurants in the borough, so I must admit to having become a bit jaded. I had heard that Char No. 4 was good, but I didn't expect to be blown away by each bite of every dish at our table and by each sip of every drink that we ordered. There were six of us, and we can be a loud group, but there was silence at the table at each bite with bursts of "oh my good, yum!" The service also was amazing. We had two little ones with us, and she answered their questions about the menu with as much attention, care, and patience as ours. A perfect night out!4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was honest and awesome. The food was honest and awesome. The pricing of the 4 B's (bourbon, burger, bacon & beer) was a great value.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMlove this place, typical oflove this place, typical of Brooklyn restaurants (not much to look at from outside but wait'll you start eating). they also host classes on various types of whiskeys. food is delicious, an easy winner if you're in the hood and showing off.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat for whiskey lovers.great for whiskey lovers. Im not a whiskey fan but they had some really interesting bourbon cocktails. went there for dinner, you must try the pork nuggets and the crab cake...amazing! Service was was great too, very friendly, a little slow, but we were in no rush so it wasn't an issue. Overall great experience.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMMy boyfriend and I had suchMy boyfriend and I had such an amazing time at Char no. 4. We are from out of town and took a gamble and it completely paid off. The food was absolutely sensational. While the whiskey was priced a little high in my opinion, the food was priced fabulously. We had two meals and split an appetizer that was absolutely delicious for a very very reasonable price. Beautiful ambiance, and attentive service. FABULOUS RESTAURANT!!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went for brunch - SO gladWe went for brunch - SO glad we did! The prefix is very good, but the Char no. 4 Biscuits Benedict are amazing!!! Their bacon gravy is to die for and the Chipotle Bloody Mary was very good too. Definitely going back soon!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe foods was very very good. The foods was very very good. Not amazing, but definitely worth trying. I find the food under-seasoned - but dishes are still tasty, fresh ingredients, meats cooked perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend the fried cheese curds. They have drastically improved (different cheese, larger curds, piping hot). Also, skip the hangar steak. It's boring. The meat is fine, it comes with potatoes, but overall blah.
Last: When booking online, I asked for something special (anything, seating, whatever) b/c it was a special occasion. And we got nothing. No acknowledgment, NADA. THAT was more disappointing than the food. First time I have EVER been to a restaurant & such a request has been 100% ignored. Not a special occasion spot for that & reasons above.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMthe host and wait staff werethe host and wait staff were very nice, food came quickly and was delicious! would definitely recommend.3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWhiskey whiskey whiskey!Great food and the best whiskey/bourbon selection I've ever seen. Our waitress was not terribly knowledgeable about whiskey, but the bartender came over and pointed us towards whiskeys to try that fit our tastes. The food was fantastic and would gladly visit again just for that. Definitely need to make reservations as it's very small and otherwise we would have waited for hours.3/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
