A word from Char No. 4
Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

Diner Reviews
  • "4 out out of our 5 brunch entrees were exceptional, 1 was very good. The service was excellent and friendly. Very welcoming place!! Definitely worth checking out!!"

  • "My parents and inlaws were in town and our group of six had excellent experience. bc we wanted quiet chatting time (plus older ppl in group a little hard of hearing) they seated us in back area and turned off music for our whole section after I requested just a lower volume. So nice! So, great service -- and delicious food! Note though that we arrived at 10am so place was nearly empty. By time we left at noon place was fuller, louder and busier. So for peacefulness go early."

  • "I love the vibe of this restaurant – you can sense the neighborhood feel to it, yet it's also a great place to go for a special occasion. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, I will definitely be back soon."

  • "Thick cut bacon appetizer is a must. Great whiskey selection"
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "The food here is not worth the price. Everything tasted as if it had just been reheated, and our shrimps and grits tasted as if they hadn't even been reheated properly. I really don't recommend it unless you really love whiskey."

  • "Food was tasty but server seemed to be not happy to be at work. Pass on here."

  • "And Char No. 4 has it. Along with a deep bourbon selection and great cocktails, this is probably my favorite restaurant on Smith Street."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "What could be bad...lot's of whiskeys and BBQ lamb"
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "Great cocktails before dinner then it went down hill. We went with two waitress recommendations which somehow made it worse."

  • "Came to Char No.4 for dinner on a Saturday evening. We were seated immediately and the hostess and all servers were very pleasant. We ordered two delicious bourbon drinks and two equally delectable appetizers- thick cut bacon and smoked chicken wings. Both were perfectly savory and well complimented with homemade sauces. For dinner we had the brisket, which was incredible, and the shrimp and grits, which left much to be desired. While the brisket was perfectly tender and flavorful, the shrimp was tough and the grits were bland. I do give Char No.4 my recommendation, but with a disclaimer to stick to the smoked meats that the menu focuses on rather than the southern inspired seafood."

  • "The short ribs, crispy grits! And perfect collards were great. The braised rib was among the least fatty I've Been served and the whole combo was delicious. A great duel with the bourbon and beer. Seriously pleasantly surprised at the dinner.thank!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went on Saturday night and really enjoyed the ambiance. He's a big fan of bourbon and since we moved to Brooklyn, he's been missing Maysville in Manhattan, so this was a great find within walking distance of our apartment!"

  • "We chose char no.4 because we'd had exceptional meals (and whiskey) there in the past and wanted to go one more time before we move across the country. Our server was clearly more concerned with turning the table over than he was with taking care of us. He forgot several drinks and side dishes and told us that if we jdidnt order entrees at the same time as our appetizers that the kitchen wouldn't be able to handle it and we might not eat for hours. This is some of the worst service I've ever had, and while I'm sure the restaurant is used to $300 tabs, I'm not and I'd expect better service for spending that kind of money. The rest of the staff was very helpful when covering for our server by dropping off our drinks and forgotten dishes."

  • "excellent whiskey bar with good cocktails. food is good, not as great."

  • "The food was great, though we were not prepared for such a short menu. There are not a ton of options, but what is there is great. Also the decor is a little strange if you are used to over-the-top NYC restaurants out-doing each other with interior design. Personally, I am fine with less than amazing decor if the food is good, and it is."

  • "Went on Christmas eve. Service was awful but willing to forgive that because they had a big crowd on Christmas eve. However food was boring and uninspiring. Can't forgivethat! Good bourbon made the night enjoyable despite these flaws"

  • "Went here with friends for an impromptu dinner. Was able to easily score reservations for 4 on a Friday night(same day), their service, in restaurant, was great. They have an extensive selection of wines, whiskeys, scotches, etc. That's were the goodies stop. The food was pretty bad all around. There were 4 of us so we were able to try most dishes on the menu and were all surprised at how bad, basically, all the food was. The ribs were completely dry (had to rip them off of the bone). The mac & cheese was completely tasteless, the pork nuggets were in desperate need of salt. I can go on and on.... Best thing there was the chicken special, which was disappointing since I was hoping to have something a little more interesting than chicken."

  • "What started as a special occasion find has now resulted in a third enjoyable visit within 6 weeks. The first trip was an intimate birthday celebration. The second was inspired by a whiskey sampling. The third was a Christmas Eve special that we couldn't pass up. Even though they had run out of the acclaimed porchetta by the time our reservation rolled around, their other delicious entrees, friendly staff, and comfortable atmosphere delivered (as they usually do). Tip: sign up for their email list. They are always offering tastings and specials that make me want to rearrange my schedule to swing by!"

  • "We've been here a few times as the food is good and the atmosphere is great, but on two different occasions we've had issues with service. This time we waited an hour from appetizer to entree and it wasn't until we pointed it out that they apologized and bought us a round of drinks. After the meals came - no apologies even when we left. Also, they seem to "run out" of menu items, which leads me to think that both of these issues are a management issue. I'm sure we will give them another chance, but 3 strikes...."

  • "I had been to Char No 4 a few times a couple years back and loved it! The food was well-seasoned and unique. This time around, I felt everything was a bit plain Jane for my tastes and was lacking in salt and pepper. Hm."
    Dined on 12/22/2013
  • "Second time eating there and could not be more different than my first experience--- quality of food, presentation, and service were all significantly worse compared to my first time dining with them."

  • "An entire book of bourbon and southern cooking. Every wed they do a special course that is always great."
    Dined on 12/12/2013
  • "Char #4 has very good food, but what really sets it apart is its outstanding choice of whiskeys served by the ounce."
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "Every time I go to Char, I love the food; however, everything is served lukewarm - the entrees, the appetizers, the coffee."
    Dined on 12/1/2013
  • "What I liked the best about this place was the southern comfort food direction they're going with the food--we had smoked chicken, potatoes, mac 'n' cheese, collards, etc. I think they should be even more obvious about trying to be a southern comfort food place and take a step away from trying to seem like a foodie place. I really liked my food, but initially I was a bit disappointed that the menu was as simple as it was, not that being simple is at all bad!"

  • "Amazing whiskey selection. They should just say they don't carry beer instead of the perpetual "our taps are broken" (they have been for over a year...). Food is definitely good."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "Great cocktails, long & expensive whiskey list. Limited food, especially for vegetarians, but what they have is excellent"

  • "It does not matter if it is the two of us, if we are out with a few friends, or if we bring our two 9 year old sons – Char is always great! We have been going for years and I always forget to write a review. The drink selection is hard to beat, the food is sensational, and the service has been consistently perfect – very hard to find even on a street as good as Smith –"

  • "This restaurant is a MUST-GO! I met a girlfriend for dinner before we headed out Saturday night and had an AWESOME time! We started with the beets salad and both ate the shrimp and grits - HOLY GOODNESS! The shrimp are grilled "just right" and the taste of the greens truly makes the meal! The offerings of the wine by glass and by the bottle are pretty expansive which is nice for all wine lovers! We weren't rushed AT ALL and even had a friend unexpectedly join us and they gladly moved us to a larger table. Excited to go back!"

  • "I have walked by a million times and thought, "I should check this place out." When a special occasion came around, I did just that. It was a fantastic evening. From the casual, inviting ambience to the whiskey selection and food menu, the night was perfect. I'd recommend ordering the large snack to start—we inhaled the flavorful deviled eggs in no time. Then we moved on to our entrees. I had the sweet tea marinated chicken from the smoker. The dish smelled amazing; the first bite caused a double take and a smile. I couldn't keep the fork out of my mouth until my plate was clean. My date had the grilled skirt steak, which inspired audible confirmation that his dish was equally tasty. The perfect amount of food to leave you satisfied."

  • "Have been here before for dinner, but brunch totally stole the show. The pulled pork with poached eggs and cheddar grits were out of this world. Though notorious for slow serving times with drinks, you don't really notice it because it's always worth the wait."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "This is my second visit to Char 4 and the food continues to be good, however the service on this was not. We waited 30+ minutes before having to asking the manager to follow-up on our drink order. The waiter should have been more proactive."

  • "I am a big fan of Char No 4 and I am continuously impressed! The Manhattan's are perfect and the wings are delicious... their Wednesday night specials are not to be missed!"

  • "As the title states, I cannot ask for anything more. I go to this place because they are consistent, they are good and they know how to make the patron happy to keep coming back. Any place that does that consistently for me is okay by me."

  • "I frequent CNo4 quite often and have left a handful of outstanding reviews..However, last night I had a very negative experience. We had to wait for about 15-20 minutes after we arrived despite the fact that we had a reservation. This would not usually bother me but there were at least 2 open tables that our party of 3 could have sat at. Once seated, the waiter did not come over for another 10 minutes and once we placed our drink order it was yet ANOTHER 10 minutes to receive 2 glasses of wine. We ordered the burger special, which has consistently knocked my socks off since is just oozes with deliciousness. However, last nights burger tasted like a frozen patti from Costco that never had a chance of tasting good. Overall, disappointing!"

  • "My wife and I were decided we wanted to go to brunch on Sunday. I saw that Char No.4 has great the reviews and decided to check out the menu online. The brunch menu looked great so we decided to try it out. When we got to the restaurant it was almost empty. I looked over the menu and was disappointed to see that the menu I was holding in the restaurant was very different from the one I had viewed online. The online menu had interesting, and unique takes on Brunch food, the actual menu had fewer options, and they were also less exciting. When the food came out it was mediocre at best. My poached egg was under cooked and my wife's pork sandwich underwhelming. I haven't been for dinner, but I suggest avoiding brunch here."
