A word from Char No. 4
Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

waitress was terrible. completely clueless . took ten minutes to get waited on (unless you count the 8 times we had our water refilled) she forgot my husband's drink. Took almost 15 minutes to get the bill processed and we might still be waiting had we not called her over at which point she looked for it --the bill with our cc still unprocessed in her apron while she wandered about the restaurant refilling coffee. too many good waitresses to bother going back for that experience.

We had a reservation but were still taken to some kind of a back room and had to ask to be seated in the main dining room. The food was great when it finally arrived. Appetizers came quickly but then we waited a LONG time fort he main course. Finally my husband got his and after about 5-0 minutes me and my son were told that our food had been served to the wrong table so we had to wait while they prepared then again. To make up for it they brought us 2 desserts without even asking if wee wanted them. There are so many good places around this area that I am not sure if I would go back to this place although the food was very good.

Char No. 4 serves a delicious brunch ( and dinner). The lists of wines and spirits are astonishing - specializing in whisky. They also smoke their own meats. The menu is varied and loaded with tasty, interesting entries. At brunch recently, I appreciated the low level of the music, which made conversation easy. I recommend this restaurant unreservedly.

Had a great dinner with friends at Char No. 4. Char No. 4 is a neighborhood favorite. Their meals are on the pricier side but they had their 3-course price fixe for Brooklyn Restaurant Week on, PLUS we caught the end of happy hours (ends at 7PM) and they offer a great deal on their whiskey drinks. As a table we tried a variety of awesome dishes. I loved the pork nuggets, deviled eggs, and the smoked ribs with collards were SO GOOD. the Smore pie was underwhelming. The drinks (whiskeys straight or whiskey cocktails) were all delicious.

I took my boyfriend here for brunch because hes a whiskey lover and this place has an extensive whiskey menu (including the brunch bloody which was superb). The fod was great, but we were slightly forgotten about at our table. We ordered the chefs brunch which has 2 courses. It took us 30 min to get our drinks, and then we didnt get our first course until after we received our breakfast. Not an awful experience, but it was frustrating as we were pretty hungry.

The whiskey list was extensive. Definitely a place to come to for whiskey tasting. The food was otherwise not impressive at all. They Butcher's Steak was cut up. All of the dishes served were lukewarm at best. While the servers were attentive, the one we had was not knowledgeable about the alcohol menu. This was disappointing.

I perhaps had too high of expectations for Char No. 4. As a lover of BBQ and bourbon, Char No. 4 has been on my must do list since moving to the city. Unfortunately, it was only ok. We got to the restaurant an hour earlier than our reservation and the hostess was so accommodating and welcoming. Honestly she was the best part of the restaurant. She sat us right away. Our server seemed somewhat annoyed by our presence and didn't seem very excited to be working. We received our meal and the food was served luke warm. I ordered the brisket and it was overwhelmed by the sauce. I might go back for drinks as my manhattan was delicious but there are many superior BBQ places in the city. This place is straight up mediocre.

Best brisket with poached eggs ever!! Seriously And from what my friends ordered, cheese grits and bacon (with maple syrup) side were really good too. My only comment about the service is that they were a bit slow. It took them 10 minutes to prepare us an empty table despite being a very quiet afternoon

Based on the online menu we were quite excited to find a BBQ restaurant that not only had mouth watering entrees and sides, such as thick cut bacon but also served top notch whisky. While we did have a great meal of brisket and whiskey, we were left in a state of confusion. The menu was considerably scaled down (3 entrees: fish, chicken and brisket); the sauces paired nicely with the food but were perplexing when drinking whiskey and finally thick cut bacon was no where to be found. Again, the food was great but did not meet our expectations as a BBQ restaurant. On the other hand, if we were looking for a Whiskey bar that served BBQ on the side, we would have been impressed.

went for brunch last weekend. ambience is not great for brunch. it's dark and better suited to being a bar - just one big window far from the actual tables. as for the food, pretty tasty southern inspired breakfast. bloody bourbon however was watery and nothing special. service was pretty bad. had to wait forever for drinks. waiters would never look our way. practically had to shout them down despite the fact the place was not crowded

We had an overall enjoyable experience here, but neither the service or the food was that memorable. We came with a large group for brunch, and amongst us, we tried the fritatta, chef's special breakfast, the salad, and the potatoes. The potatoes were probably the best (which says something). My friend who ordered the chef's special asked for it with egg whites, which came with an incredibly small egg white scramble. The service was also just OK - I felt like we were looking for our waiter a few times, and it's a small restaurant!

I've been going to Char No. 4 for a few years now. I am a fan of bourbon so there is no lacking in excellent choices here. I have done a number of their weekly specials as well as ordered choice cuts for the holidays. I have highly recommended Char No. 4 to friends and family. However, the last time I went I was a little underwhelmed. I had the lobster roll which was tasty. My problem was with the side of fries. It seemed like it was a rationed small portion like an after thought. There was no problem with the flavor. The plate just seemed incomplete.

The 504 Burger night was a hit! We originally popped in for the burger/beer special, but couldn't just do only that! Appetizers were chicken wings, fried green tomatoes. Wow! Then quite possibly the best burger I've had! Paired with Abita amber beer, it was truly one of the best specials I've been to in the neighborhood. Although we were more than satisfied, we couldn't resist the fresh batch of bread pudding for dessert. Overall, we walked away very pleased customers.

I wanted a group birthday dinner for my husband where we could catch up with friends, hear each other, and eat delicious food. Char No. 4 was perfect. The cocktails were tasty and original, everything we ate was fantastic, and the ambience was festive while still allowing us to all talk and hear one another. Making a reservation for 8 people at 8pm on a Saturday night was easier than I imagined it would be. Couldn't have asked for anything more!

Good food (amazing pancakes!), but not much room for substitutions (i.e. I'm allergic to egg yolks, but they wouldn't make an egg white quiche for me). Also, their brunch and lunch menus on opentable differ from their actual menu. Our waiter was kind, but he seemed very nonchalant and took a while to get us coffee. Also, if you're a coffee person and you go for brunch, prepare to be disappointed (unless my family and I just got a bad batch that day).

Ambience, music awesome, food was not. Service average. Tiny white clumps in the coffee AFTER the milk was stirred in, we asked for a fresh cup but got "I checked the expiration date and it says the milk is good"(repeated twice), instead of "I'm so sorry I will get a fresh cup". Had to say "even though the milk didn't expire, don't you see these things floating on top? Can't we just have a fresh cup?" The check came with "I"m sorry about the coffee, no charge" preferable would be apology, fresh cup no, struggle. Brisket tasty but cold; bun overcharred, bad aftertaste; too much bread for small portion meat and collards. Lamb pastrami very cold, bread on the side (why?) charred soggy. Crispy grits were NOT, also bland, tasteless inside

Granted it was a Tuesday evening, but I'd passed by Char No. 4 on other weekday eves and felt the buzz. No buzz though this eve; the bees had flown the hive. If I hadn't had a reservation I might've kept walking down Smith Street to find more hum. Bourbon's the thing here at Char and we weren't disappointed. A flight of whiskey for my friend and a bourbon and a beer for me. Tho I found myself wishing I was back at the new White Oak Tavern a few streets away that had an awesome Kelso IPA on draft. We shared a ubiquitous kale salad which was generous and well dressed. But the shrimp and grits had lost their oomph. At 20+ bucks, I expected something snazzier. Seems like Char needs to turn up the flame again if they want to stay on Smith.
