A word from Char No. 4
Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

  • First negative experience at Char..

I frequent CNo4 quite often and have left a handful of outstanding reviews..However, last night I had a very negative experience. We had to wait for about 15-20 minutes after we arrived despite the fact that we had a reservation. This would not usually bother me but there were at least 2 open tables that our party of 3 could have sat at. Once seated, the waiter did not come over for another 10 minutes and once we placed our drink order it was yet ANOTHER 10 minutes to receive 2 glasses of wine. We ordered the burger special, which has consistently knocked my socks off since is just oozes with deliciousness. However, last nights burger tasted like a frozen patti from Costco that never had a chance of tasting good. Overall, disappointing!

My wife suggested this restaurant as a date night. As someone who is beginning to truly love and appreciate whisky (I opt to use the Scottish/Canadian spelling because I'm Canadian) I was really looking forward to trying various whiskies from all over the world. Needless to say I was not disappointed! The manager was also very kind and knowledgable about the bar stock. I do have to admit that the food tasted very salty.

We ordered a few different apps and all 4 people enjoyed them along with their entrees. That said, the menu is limited and the dessert selection was poor, there were only 2 pies to choose from. Expansive drink menu and all were well made. We did ask the bartender what the best whiskey was and he refused to answer... while there are dozens of whiskey's available and it is tough to choose just one, he wouldn't even recommend one or tell us his favorite which was just annoying.

My wife and I were decided we wanted to go to brunch on Sunday. I saw that Char No.4 has great the reviews and decided to check out the menu online. The brunch menu looked great so we decided to try it out. When we got to the restaurant it was almost empty. I looked over the menu and was disappointed to see that the menu I was holding in the restaurant was very different from the one I had viewed online. The online menu had interesting, and unique takes on Brunch food, the actual menu had fewer options, and they were also less exciting. When the food came out it was mediocre at best. My poached egg was under cooked and my wife's pork sandwich underwhelming. I haven't been for dinner, but I suggest avoiding brunch here.

Nice to find this neighborhood gem in Brooklyn. Good lighting and vibe. Loved the deviled eggs and cornflakes-crusted crab cake. Yum! Potatoes as a side were uniquely good. Our waiter was a bit lower-key than we're used to, but certainly effective. Will return next time we're in the area!

I took my girlfriend here to Char No 4 for her birthday and we both were impressed. The food was great, the setting was comfortable, and the service was well above par. I have been told that this restaurant is known for its whiskey selection, but I went more for the dining experience as I am not really a liquor connoisseur. For our appetizer, we had the thick cut bacon with candied almonds, pickled rhubarb and apricots (which was probably my favorite). For mains, I had the Shrimp and Grits, and my girlfriend had the hanger steak. I can confidently say I will be going back for more, and would recommend to anyone who likes comfort style food with a bit more class - Brooklyn Style.

This was our fifth or sixth time at Char 4. The food continues to be exceptional. Everything is wonderful, and the wine list and bar menu are excellent. Also very good service. I'm happy to say that for the first time we had been there, the place was absolutely packed, with people even eating at the bar. This restaurant deserves to be packed every night. Having said that, however, the noise level was so deafening that we couldn't wait to get out of there. We had guests visiting from out of town, and we had taken them to Char 4 last year. They requested that we go there again because they loved the phone, but we could barely carry on a conversation. We went elsewhere for coffee and dessert so we could actually talk!

I passed this restaurant dozens of times on my home from the subway and didn't stop in until last Friday when a friend suggested it. I am gluten free so I always check the menu out ahead of time and call first. Dave the manager was great, answered all my questions and made a few recommendations. We were two couples and we all had a great meal. I was able to choose from all the entrees and most of the appetizers. We all got the clean plate award when we were through. Some items we had were the lamb pastrami, snap pea risotto and the hangar steak. All got a thumbs up. Definitely would go back. By the time we left, there was a happening scene at the bar and lots of people waiting for tables.

Char 4 always offers something special in the way of great food and interesting beverage choices, as long as you love a variety of Bourbon, which I do. We have been frequenting this place since it opened. It is a staple in the vast selection of quality establishments in the vicinity. For brunch, lunch or dinner its always been good. We love Derby Day when they offer Mint Julips and a chance to pick a winning horse in the race. Try the shrimp and grits.

Was here for brunch with a friend. Had eggs n grits -- they were very tasty. A huge portion that I couldn't finish. Oh, and bacon, which was thick cut and yummy. We also had a few bourbon bloody marys that were pretty good, though I tend to like them a bit spicier. Only drawbacks were: it was a hot, hot day and it was fairly hot in the restaurant. Not unbearable, but hot enough that when I got up, my chair had sweatmarks where my legs were touching it, and my skirt was stuck to me. Ew. The chairs were also not super comfy, and the decor is kinda meh. Otherwise, this would be a 5-star place: very good food & drinks & service.

We wanted to go to a restaurant that featured barbeque, and selected Char No. 4 because it was near the Cobble Hill Cinema. Char No. 4 is one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, with consistently "very good" food and friendly service. They're good with reservations, meaning you don't wait for 15 minutes despite having made a reservation--a.k.a. prompt seating. The four of us enjoyed our dining experience, though the restaurant is somewhat noisy. If you're into a quiet spot, this isn't the place.

This is a great spot for a date or dinner with friends, as the food, drinks, and service are all 4 star. The one caveat is that the main dining room is VERY loud, so be prepared to yell. Have a bourbon cocktail (try the Hound Dog with grapefruit and mint) and definitely do not miss the lamb pastrami appetizer! This restaurant is a meat lovers paradise, and well priced.

I like Char No 4 a lot and will be back, but since I've been sent this thing, I will tell you two things that were disappointing about my last meal. !. the cucumber soup was billed as having grilled (I think) shrimp in it. My date and I had a hard time locating any shrimp. When we did the pieces were so small that any grill effect was lost. It seemed like the kitchen ran out of shrimp for the soup. 2. The dessert seemed like it had not been baked that day- the chocolate tart. It was really hard to put a spoon through it.Drinks- the bourbon tings were delicious and well-crafted. The service was very nice. Also, thanks for taking reservations.

my wife and i have eaten here several times. every time has greeted us with a flavor explosion and something innovative. the food is very accessible, but it is way more complex, varied, and deep than your average american-influenced eatery. We had the soft-shell crab sandwich with slaw and also a side of the bbq baked beans. sounds 'pedestrian' right? WRONG. i have never experienced so much flavor on one sandwich. the slaw was smoky and chipotle-ey (it's a word, trust me). the beans were sweet, hearty, and satisfying. yum. our server was also very knowledgable, polite, and accommodating. all-around - a great experience.

Our food arrived in this order with about 5 minutes in between each: main course, appetizer, cocktails - once we were served, our waitress never came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. We watched our cocktails sit on the bar waiting to be picked up for over 25 minutes after we ordered them. We had to get up in order to find our server to get our check. Food was average at best and clearly the kitchen and wait staff do not have their act together. When we left, we passed by our server and three others. Not one person said goodbye or thanked us for coming.

The brunch was yummy--unpretentious but creative. I had the specials: beet and bourbon cured lox with homemade poppy cream cheese on brioche and French toast sticks with maple custard (as an app for the table). Having custard instead of syrup means more sticks to the French toast sticks! The lox was something special. The greens were bitter dandelion type, which I quite enjoyed though for everyone. My friends enjoyed their eggs and grits breakfasts, though said the grits are grainier than they are used to. I enjoyed the biscuit bites I stole. The booths are a little dark in the front room and noise level is "energetic", but that didnt bother me. The back room has lots of natural light but can only seat parties of 4 or fewer.

Char No. 4 is consistently my go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. Their menu is always interesting, and the dishes were wonderful. The Wild Boar Sausage currently on the menu is spectacular. Service and knowledge of the staff is impressive. The bartenders and waiters study the menu and whiskey list and can explain them all in detail. This place is great because of their acknowledgment of food allergies. They always have a gluten-free option (usually more than one) and the servers know whether a dish has gluten in it or if it could be made without it. They also have multiple vegetarian dishes on the menu as well.

I love coming to Char No. 4 for brunch. I'm always torn between the biscuits benedict which are served with bacon gravy (in lieu of hollandaise), and the bacon cheddar grits with poached eggs, which are served with fresh green onions. Either way I always have to get a bourbon bloody mary which always comes a bit pickly and salty...just how I like it. The coffee is strong. The food is reasonably priced for the neighborhood and quality. Best of all you can (and should) make reservations online and just stroll in at brunch time. I'm there at least every other weekend. Highly recommend, especially for a party of 4, seated in one of the amazingly comfortable booths. Most restaurants of this quality and price range tend to forgo comfortable seating for visually appealing but rickety/vintagey, design forward furnishing. Whether this choice is for budget reasons or to enable a 2-hr turnaround of tables, whatever the reasons, after eating at Char No. 4, I'll take more notice of "comfort level of seating" when giving my opinion of a dining experience. My dining partners had 1 glass of wine, a cocktail for me, an entree each, shared an appetizer, two desserts. Total bill w/ tip = $215. Last words: Perfect portions. Able to speak freely w/o shouting. Must order: SMOKED HALF CHICKEN. Unforgettable.
