A word from Char No. 4
Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

  • "Good food (amazing pancakes!), but not much room for substitutions (i.e. I'm allergic to egg yolks, but they wouldn't make an egg white quiche for me). Also, their brunch and lunch menus on opentable differ from their actual menu. Our waiter was kind, but he seemed very nonchalant and took a while to get us coffee. Also, if you're a coffee person and you go for brunch, prepare to be disappointed (unless my family and I just got a bad batch that day)."

Tiny white clumps in the coffee AFTER the milk was stirred in, we asked for a fresh cup but got "I checked the expiration date and it says the milk is good"(repeated twice), instead of "I'm so sorry I will get a fresh cup". Had to say "even though the milk didn't expire, don't you see these things floating on top? Can't we just have a fresh cup?" The check came with "I"m sorry about the coffee, no charge" preferable would be apology, fresh cup no, struggle. Brisket tasty but cold; bun overcharred, bad aftertaste; too much bread for small portion meat and collards. Lamb pastrami very cold, bread on the side (why?) charred soggy. Crispy grits were NOT, also bland, tasteless inside"

  • "Granted it was a Tuesday evening, but I'd passed by Char No. 4 on other weekday eves and felt the buzz. No buzz though this eve; the bees had flown the hive. If I hadn't had a reservation I might've kept walking down Smith Street to find more hum. Bourbon's the thing here at Char and we weren't disappointed. A flight of whiskey for my friend and a bourbon and a beer for me. Tho I found myself wishing I was back at the new White Oak Tavern a few streets away that had an awesome Kelso IPA on draft. We shared a ubiquitous kale salad which was generous and well dressed. But the shrimp and grits had lost their oomph. At 20+ bucks, I expected something snazzier. Seems like Char needs to turn up the flame again if they want to stay on Smith."

  • "Had read good things and was regrettably disappointed. Ribs needed AT LEAST another hour. Mac and cheese was, I kid you not, plain shells with some cheese grated over top and melted. No sauce. No mustard. No nothing. Cheese and shells. Get the deviled eggs and then stop. "

The food was soggy (the only word to really describe it) and the table smelled like mildew, as if you were eating at Applebee's. Disappointing in general. The service was good-the server was lovely and even cleaned the table at our request--but it didn't make up for the subpar food and experience in general. "

  • "I would give this place 5 stars for its whiskey/bourbon selection and friendly service, but only 2 stars for the food. I was extremely impressed with the whiskey/bourbon selection. The food menu is extremely limited and focuses on smoked meats. We started with the fried pork nuggets which were tasty, but a bit dry - the white-sauce served with them was good. The thick cut bacon appetizer was excellent - best thing we ate here! The baby back ribs and hanger steak entrees were both very mediocre - the ribs were dry and the steak was a bit tough. I was also a bit disappointed by the price-tag - I felt it was a bit pricey for relatively small portions of comfort food. I would definitely go back for drinks, but probably not to eat. "

I would like to try the back patio but it's tiny and doesn't look very inviting. The staff is very attentive and accommodating. We felt well taken care of. "

  • "My parents and inlaws were in town and our group of six had excellent experience. bc we wanted quiet chatting time (plus older ppl in group a little hard of hearing) they seated us in back area and turned off music for our whole section after I requested just a lower volume. So nice! So, great service -- and delicious food! Note though that we arrived at 10am so place was nearly empty. By time we left at noon place was fuller, louder and busier. So for peacefulness go early."

  • "Came to Char No.4 for dinner on a Saturday evening. We were seated immediately and the hostess and all servers were very pleasant. We ordered two delicious bourbon drinks and two equally delectable appetizers- thick cut bacon and smoked chicken wings. Both were perfectly savory and well complimented with homemade sauces. For dinner we had the brisket, which was incredible, and the shrimp and grits, which left much to be desired. While the brisket was perfectly tender and flavorful, the shrimp was tough and the grits were bland. I do give Char No.4 my recommendation, but with a disclaimer to stick to the smoked meats that the menu focuses on rather than the southern inspired seafood."

  • "We chose char no.4 because we'd had exceptional meals (and whiskey) there in the past and wanted to go one more time before we move across the country. Our server was clearly more concerned with turning the table over than he was with taking care of us. He forgot several drinks and side dishes and told us that if we jdidnt order entrees at the same time as our appetizers that the kitchen wouldn't be able to handle it and we might not eat for hours. This is some of the worst service I've ever had, and while I'm sure the restaurant is used to $300 tabs, I'm not and I'd expect better service for spending that kind of money. The rest of the staff was very helpful when covering for our server by dropping off our drinks and forgotten dishes."

  • "Went here with friends for an impromptu dinner. Was able to easily score reservations for 4 on a Friday night(same day), their service, in restaurant, was great. They have an extensive selection of wines, whiskeys, scotches, etc. That's were the goodies stop. The food was pretty bad all around. There were 4 of us so we were able to try most dishes on the menu and were all surprised at how bad, basically, all the food was. The ribs were completely dry (had to rip them off of the bone). The mac & cheese was completely tasteless, the pork nuggets were in desperate need of salt. I can go on and on.... Best thing there was the chicken special, which was disappointing since I was hoping to have something a little more interesting than chicken."

  • "What started as a special occasion find has now resulted in a third enjoyable visit within 6 weeks. The first trip was an intimate birthday celebration. The second was inspired by a whiskey sampling. The third was a Christmas Eve special that we couldn't pass up. Even though they had run out of the acclaimed porchetta by the time our reservation rolled around, their other delicious entrees, friendly staff, and comfortable atmosphere delivered (as they usually do). Tip: sign up for their email list. They are always offering tastings and specials that make me want to rearrange my schedule to swing by!"

  • "We've been here a few times as the food is good and the atmosphere is great, but on two different occasions we've had issues with service. This time we waited an hour from appetizer to entree and it wasn't until we pointed it out that they apologized and bought us a round of drinks. After the meals came - no apologies even when we left. Also, they seem to "run out" of menu items, which leads me to think that both of these issues are a management issue. I'm sure we will give them another chance, but 3 strikes...."

  • "What I liked the best about this place was the southern comfort food direction they're going with the food--we had smoked chicken, potatoes, mac 'n' cheese, collards, etc. I think they should be even more obvious about trying to be a southern comfort food place and take a step away from trying to seem like a foodie place. I really liked my food, but initially I was a bit disappointed that the menu was as simple as it was, not that being simple is at all bad!"
