  • "Like the ambience, etc. but the Sunday brunch was a disappointment: had steak and eggs but steak was gristly! Eggs Florentine cooked to order but not much flavor. Nice potatoes and fruit. Bottomless mimosas were delicious. I wish they had told me they were$12.00 each! Would recommend Char for late night on the patio but not for Brunch."

  • "Made Thurs night reservation on Wed afternoon, anticipating crowd for App State graduation weekend. Turned out we shot the gap in crowds , between the dining group that probably finished at 8 and the bar crowd that filtered in starting probably at 10. But despite the empty room and surprised acting waitstaff, we had good experience. Highlight was a curry duck breast (I know it sounds weird, but it was recommended by the waiter and it was superb), modest filet, caesar salad, and outstanding draft beer lineup. If possible, eat out on deck and away from gathering bar crowd. This is excellent option for Boone area."

Given the restaurants to choose from in the Boone area, I would definitely not recommend Char. Vidalia a much much much better choice and it's just right around the corner. No plans to return."

  • "Living locally, this restaurant is often the one we choose, often with out-of-town guests. The interior is very nice and the atmosphere friendly. Last night, my husband enjoyed the tuna, which is consistently wonderful. I had the flounder special, which paired with roasted celery root and red potato hash, asparagus and chanterelles was one of the best meals I've had anywhere. Plus, the presentations were beautifully done. Jeremy, our server, couldn't have been better. The staff is smartly hired and expertly trained - in addition to being very personable. The menu could be considered somewhat limited, so check it out before you go and maybe call to ask for specials. We've never been disappointed. Great for lunch, too."

  • "Love Love Love their New Orleans Style Wings with the Dry Rub! Cooked Crispy is a must. Their Happy Monday Wing night is our new place. A great find for my husband and I. Topped off with a Margarita was the perfect match. Prices are just right for the college students and for us young at heart. Enjoy!"

  • "My scallops were excellent, beautifully prepared. Grilled asparagus was also excellent. I found the mashed potatoes I ordered to be very ordinary, served in a white cup with not even a sprinkling of parsley. Only problem I had was that my scallops were not hot when they reached the table. My husband loved his shrimp and grits and he is a connoisseur of this dish!"

  • "First time eating at Char and we weren't impressed. Dining area is dark and devoid of atmosphere. Good menu though and our watiress was personable and prompt. Problems began with a long wait for our food. When it arrived, my wife's trout was lukewarm with pastey grits. My friend scallop plate only had 3 small to medium scallops and they were not appealling (he did not eat them and they removed them from his bill). My son ordered beef tips (appetizer) and a wedge salad. The tips came with everyone else's meal, but they didn't bring the wedge out for another 10 minutes. Char would be okay if all the other good restaurants in Boone were booked -- better than fast food, but that's about it."

  • "Waitress was very attentive. Appetizers of fried plantains, and pesto flatbread were awesome.. My son and I both had the veggie plate and were pleased. My wife had a pasta dish which she also enjoyed. The outdoor seating space was a lot of fun. Will definitely go back when we are in town."

  • "Thai Beef Tidbits were savory and cooked perfectly; Plantains were crisped fantastically, their cilantro/lime sauce was flavorless and oily; Fried Calamari w/ basil aioli was clean and standard; the real let-down was the Ahi Tuna. This was described: "Seared & chilled sashimi-grade Ahi tuna served over fried wontons topped with Asian slaw & dressed with our citrus-ginger vinaigrette." The ahi would have been perfect if served alone - but it rested on dry, undressed green & purple cabbage which in turn sits on even drier fried wonton and a conspicuous lump of wasabi on the plate. Dressing missing and inedibly dry without it. We asked for the dressing and were told nothing came w/ the dish but that we could get 'soy sauce, if we wanted it'."

  • "Lovely place. We had to send the soup back because it was served luke warm at best. Obviously reheated in microwave. The NC Trout was over done and the cheese grits had consistency of paste. The manager noticed the meal returned mostly uneaten and came out to comp the meal, apologizing for the fish. I may try this restaurant once more, if I am in the area, but it won't be at the top of my list."

  • "We were staying in Blowing Rock Sunday night but drove to Boone to go to Char because it was highly recommended by a friend. The server was absolutely wonderful and friendly. They were out of the scallops dish I chose so I ordered something else. A few minutes later the waitress came back and said they were out of my 2nd choice as well so I ordered the Tilapia. My husband ordered the Ribeye. When our food came, mine was OK but my husband's steak and all of his sides were cold. The restaurant was not very busy so not sure why the food was cold. he waitress and the manager were very kind and wanted to make it right and comped my husband's glass of wine. We really wanted to like Char but won't be back."

HOWEVER, one of my friends and I asked if we could have a little more of the sauce that was on our filets and the chef said that he would have to charge us $1 because it was made with red wine!!! Really?! I am paying $29 for my entree and you are going to charge me for a little more sauce?! Probably won't return because of that. Chef needs a little lesson about how to please his customers."

  • "The most frustrating restaurant experience I've had in a long time. The "featured" wine list included a by-the-glass price, but we were told we couldn't order "featured" wines by the glass. So then we ordered a bottle of a featured wine, and 10 minutes later were told they were out of that wine. So we ordered a bottle from the excessivly complicated wine list, 10 minutes later were told they were out of that and that the bar tender recommended a different wine, so we accepted that offer. When that wine came is was horrible. We had been seated for over 25 minutes and still didn't have a drink, much less anything to eat. When the server returned, we thanked her and left."

  • "This was our first visit to Char and we really liked it. They have a gluten free menu, and it also noted which item was vegan. The chef was knowledgeable about food allergies and the food was delicious. We had the spinach and artichoke dip, and they subbed carrots and celery for the flour tortilla chips. Then I has a veggie plate and my husband had a mediterranean salad with salmon. Both delicious. I liked the wine list. Nice atmposhere, pleasant wait staff. We will return!"

  • "We have visited Char several times. There are many things we like about the place. The food is delicious. The service is impeccable. The atmosphere is inviting and relaxing. We have tried several different menu items. My favorite is the red pepper crab bisque and pesto flatbread. My husband prefers the ribeye. We have also sampled the desserts. The coconut layer cake was incredible. We like the outdoor dining area. It is quiet and romantic. We will return. You can not go wrong with this place. There is something on the menu for every food palate."
