Diner Reviews
  • "Chapmans seemed to have fallen off the map for a bit, but it's in a great location with really good atmosphere, and the new chef and menu are wonderful. We hope that more folks hear about it and venture out and that the people at Chapman's continue to update the menu and reputation. It is a very nice meal in a very nice venue."

  • "I have been dining at Chapman's for many years and it remains one of my local favorites. Among its virtues are its quiet ambiance, especially for lunch, but also dinners except for weekends; its fine musical performances on Friday and Saturday evenings; its generally excellent cuisine; its modern, elegant bar; and its large banquet areas for special occasions. Their menus have been updated frequently, so the choices have not become stale, but many old familiar items remain. Service is not consistent and is sometimes understaffed, but when it's good, it's very good. Highly recommended."

  • "We had four adults and one five-year old. Wonderful food for all of us, and a secluded dining room. Could not have been better, and the service could not have been more attentive."

  • "This was our first visit to Chapman's in Bloomington, IN. We expected Chapman's to be a sophisticated dining experience. It was so much more. The ambiance was lovely. Our server, William, was very welcoming, gracious and attentive. The food was delightful and presented in an attractive manner. The menu offered a generous variety of options and prices. The evening we were there, musicians with a grand piano and bass played light jazz and even offered to play our requests. It was an all-around wonderful experience. We look forward to returning."

  • "We visited Bloomington and wanted to see some friends, so we invited them to join us for Sunday brunch at Chapman's. What a perfect choice! The servers were attentive and efficient; Sunday brunch buffet was outstanding. An omelet station and a "pancake to order" station allowed for creative combinations of ingredients. A lovely salad bar had fresh options for topping a crisp spring mix. Tomato rice soup was piping hot. A variety of breakfast and lunch options, from "quiche squares" to lasagna, from biscuits and sausage gravy to veggies, were offered. Dessert options included divine flourless chocolate cake (more like fudge!) and cheesecake. I also enjoyed the unlimited mimosas, which were green in honor of St. Patrick's Day (next day)."

  • "We are frequent visitors to Chapman's and have been for years. The service is always excellent as is the food, drinks, and the music. Whether it is themed special nights such as Valentine's Day or Wine/Food Pairings or the regular menu we always find our dining experience extremely satisfying. We can bring our two teenage children earlier in the evening and they can order a gourmet burger or enjoy a romantic evening later by ourselves. We also enjoy the piano music and the jazz ensembles. We would certainly recommend Chapman's to anyone!"

  • "We had a great experience, but do not go here if you are in a hurry. Wasn't a problem for us because we were on our Valentine date and had time to enjoy each other. Tomato soup was excellent, shrimp were huge and juicy, and the filet was cooked perfectly. My husband was a little turned off by the caesar salad, but that was because it was prepared in a traditional way (filleted anchovies on top) and he had never experienced that. Overall a good night, and I'll go back for sure."

  • "We arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday evening (yes, that's early for some), and were immediately seated. It was nice and quiet for our romantic dinner. Food was fine, service (Aaron) was GREAT, prices were on the mark. A wonderful experience, which we will do again!"

  • "It is such a bountiful brunch with choices for all. The omelets are my favorite but the fried biscuits run a close second. The service is great."

  • "My decision to take my valentine to Chapman's Restaurant (this was our first visit ever) turned out to be something we plan on making a tradition. The food and service were excellent…. a little pricey for me, but for a special occasion it was perfect. They even provided a long stemmed rose for my valentine."

  • "Our wait person was really great. But the food was awful. Haute Cuisine is such a joke. The ambiance was nice except for the jazz piano player. No one likes to have to listen to jazz while eating. Fortunately they were able to give us a private room away from the piano so we didn't suffer too much. I know they think it gives the place a sophisticated atmosphere, but it doesn't. If you have to have music, pipe in some Mozart or Beethoven. Oh- one other tip- if you put ANYTHING in mashed potatoes (except for salt, pepper and butter) please do not call them mashed potatoes. Call them what they really are: mashed potatoes with garlic, sour cream, shallots and anything else you put in them. But don't call them mashed potatoes."

  • "We were looking for new dining experience in Bloomington and came across Chapman's through Open Table. The menu was enticing though some of the past reviews were critical of the service levels. We found our waiter Tobias to be attentive and happy to help, as were others. The food was very good - from the soup to the varied entrees and all the way through our homemade ice cream dessert. The restaurant was not at all crowded which at first caused us some concern but it was raining and the restaurant is a little out of the way. We were still surprised that more people were not there given how good the food was and how much we enjoyed the experience. Looking forward to going back."

  • "Chapman's used to be a great find for that special occasion or fancy dinner. I went there with co-workers for lunch and the menu was basic and food was just okay. There was nothing there that was horrible nor great and will likely not go back unless I hear that it has improved tremendously. We just have too many other better options in Bloomington."

  • "The resturant was filled with parties the noise was well controlled, However the service suffered as a result. The NY Strip was not up to standard. It was not tender and not been cooked will. It was prsented nicely. The salad was good. The waiter never came back with bread or water and was pre-occupied with the large party in the next dinning room. We have eaten here several times over the last few years and have been satisfied. However, your prices are way to high for Bloomington locals and we may not come back for that reason."

  • "One of the better places for lunch in Bloomington. our table was ready on arrival, the menu presented a good selection of American food. The service was excellent (partly due to a small l8unch crowd that day). We enjoyed it."

  • "The food was nothing to write home about for a Thanksgiving meal. Lots of casserole dishes and not many options. The carving station was nice though. And the noise level in the room was terrible. We will not be going back there next Thanksgiving."

  • "The food and ambience at Chapmans were outstanding, and although the staff was friendly and nice, my family's server was slow and made multiple errors, so that was disappointing. Other than that it was a wonderful experience and I will definitely return and recommend Chapmans to others. cheers, turkeywing p.s. cheesecake to DIE for :)"

  • "They ran out of turkey for the 2nd seating of Thanksgiving. Seems poor planing. Other food was mostly cold. Service was awful...the waiter kept complaining about how busy he was - should have spent less time complaining, more time serving! We eventually got our own drinks by going to the kitchen..."

  • "Took an old friend here for dinner. Each of us had been here before several times. The menu offers many things and appeals to carnivores, seafood fans, and those who prefer vegetarian. The salad ingredients were crisp and fresh, and the rolls were warm and yeasty. My friend opted for chicken marsala and I selected the seafood stew special, both of which were perfectly prepared. Service was knowledgeable and attentive without "hovering." In Bloomington, which is a college town, if you want a place which is more likely to be patronized by adults rather than students, Chapman's is a good choice."

  • "Chapman's Restaurant in Bloomington has always been our go-to special occasion restaurant. But we hadn't been there since they changed their chef and menu so we went for our Wedding Anniversary dinner and took our granddaughter along. Fabulous salads, great ribs and happened to be all you can eat Walleye Fish night...also outstanding. The only bad thing was that dinner was so filing, we didn't have room to try dessert. Maybe next time!"

  • "We had a group of 10 on a busy IU football weekend. It was a great place slightly away from the crowds with good food and pleasant atmosphere. The service was great!"

  • "Three of our party of five were seated. Apparently, our name was then wiped off the reservation list. So when our other two guests showed up, they were told there was not a reservation and were seated elsewhere. Twenty minutes later we 'found' our two guests in a booth. Very embarrassing--especially since they had never been there before. Also, when we returned from the second 'round' at the buffet, our used plates had not been removed. I gathered them and put them at the end of the table. Not the kind of service I expect at Chapman's."

  • "There was a piano player that started to play after we had been there about 20 minutes and it was a nice touch to dinner. I was disappointed that there were several dishes we had ordered that they did not have. We ordered the smoked Salmon and Blue Crab Dip as an appetizer, and the seared scallops and they were out of both. We ordered but the waiter come back to us and said they were out of the Ribs. I don't remember where I have gone to dinner that there were so many items they were out of. We did however like the food we did receive. Our party of 4 ordered 3 of the 8oz filets and they were all cooked the way we asked and I had the seared pork tenderloin that was moist and tender."
