A word from Chapeau (fka: Clementine Restaurant)

**Chapeau has now merged with Clementine!**

Classic style reminiscent of a Parisian restaurant. The service and ambiance are what you would find at a more expensive white-tablecloth restaurant and the food is a bargain.

  • "started with mussels...my wife kept stealing the fries...crispy and delicate and yummy. had salmon for entree. slightly smoked was a great description and a nice touch. not overdone. subtle but present. the lentils and artichoke provided a hearty compliment to the fish. my wife had the baby chicken which is a new item and was tender with crispy skin. had the chocolate cake for dessert and worth the wait for freshly baking it. all in all another fine experience at chapeau which our new regular spot. service was attentive with great wine pairings. • "We love La Folie (also Etoile/Napa), but even we can't eat such rich expensive food every month. Chapeau is a lovely compromise: you can be satisfied with excellent French cooking at a reasonable price. We love that some dishes here are in half-portions as well as full-size; wish more restaurants would do this. Loved the sweetbreads (even tho we're not truffle fans and could do without them completely), the salade Landaise, onion soup, roast chicken, and filet mignon. Desserts were good but not quite so interesting. We were there on a Sunday; place had a couple of big groups and seemed understaffed. M. Gardelle, owner/chef, was pitching in and helping, but we had some longer-than-average waits. Don't be in a hurry here!"

  • "It's nice that this restaurant is on Clement St. and not downtown. I enjoy being able to stroll to and from a restaurant, even for a more fancy meal and/or occasion, over having to call a cab. Neighborhood restaurants like this are what make a city special. Delicious food, and almost too many yummy choices for me to choose from but I figured it out! My dinner partner and I both enjoyed ourselves."

  • "They gave us the worst table in the whole place, when there were better tables available, and after I requested a nice table for my husband's birthday when I placed my reservation. They should not even have that table there, it was obviously squeezed in to fit one more table in the dining room. It is so close to where the servers come in an out of and all you have is a view of the extra chairs and register screen. I have taken my husband here for the past five years for his birthday and he always looks forward to it, but this year was highly disappointing. I will not be going back again."

  • "Our experience at Chapeau is consistently high quality food and service. Two special notes: 1) Phillippe, the owner-chef greets guests throughout the evening to ensure they enjoy themselves, hugging and kissing (both cheeks) if you are a return guest. 2) Previous to this recent experience, when Phillippe came to our table several months ago, in response to his "how is everything?" I said that the only item I wished he had was Cassoulet, my favorite French dish. He said, call 2 - 3 days in advance before we next visit and he should be able to accommodate. When their reservationist called to confirm 2 days ahead, I asked if Cassoulet would be on the menu, she checked with Phillippe who said that it would be there! And it was great!"

  • "In comparison to the many other moderately priced French bistros in SF, I was disappointed. Dinner started with a complimentary amuse-bouche of cauliflower soup. I liked it, but my wife thought it was too rich. For appetizers, we had Beet salad and the Salmon Trio. The Salmon was great, the salad OK. For mains, we had Skate wing and Cassoulet. The Skate was great, the Cassoulet OK. For dessert we split a creme brulee, which was perfect. The service was excellent, but delivery of food from the kitchen was leisurely paced. Prices are high for the food quality, there is a charge for palette cleansers, and many of the dishes have add-on prices to the set menu. Ambience is romantic but the dining room looks a bit tired."

  • "We love dining at Chapeau. We live a long ways away (300 miles) and so we are particularly delighted each time to see that the same quality of food and service are always available. Everything we had to eat was elegant, unique, and tasted wonderful. We will be back!"

  • "What a lovely restaurant in a nice area of San Francisco. We went here after seeing the mystery diner episode on food network. My daughter wanted to celebrate her sweet 16 in San Francisco so I had to give Chapeau! A try. The hostess Erika was a gem she got us in a day early and the entire staff was very professional. The owner came over and introduced himself to us and as we were leaving he said goodbye to us and took a photo with us. Now about the food... I encourage everyone to try the sweetbread it was outstanding. For my main course I had the filet with black truffle sauce and it was cooked to perfection. The wine selection was not extensive because it doesn't need to be when you are supplying the perfect wines. A++++"

  • "Have been to Chapeau half a dozen times now and am never disappointed. The duck confit was succulent, not fatty or greasy as were the sweetbreads that I had for appetizer. (Oy, my cholesterol!). My dining companions raved about the vegetarian open ravioli, as well as the french onion soup. Service was crisp. My only disappointment was that I asked for a glass of Sancerre, but I assume they do serve it by the glass. I was offered a french white which was a tad bit too dry for me. Next time I know better. Overall, a wonderful dining experience as usual."

  • "We've been going to Chapeau! since it was located near 15th Avenue and it continues to impress. The consistency with which they turn out top quality dishes time after time is amazing. As good as the food is, my favorite part of any visit is the attention Philipe and Ellen pay us and the other patrons - its a joy to be around people who truly love their profession."

  • "I've dined at Chapeau! a few times throug the years, but never had a mind-blowing experience. However, the boy accepted residency into UCLA this week, which meant we needed to celebrate and begin our "Bye, Bye SF Tour." Despite my experiences at Chapeau!, I was swayed once again by their stunning reviews. Run-down: Classic French food w/ hearty portions. Pleasant atmosphere. Of the eight dishes, the only notable items were the butter (yes, that goes with the bread), the cauliflower soup amuse and baked Alaska. Which makes the $200+ meal a big fat flop. Our waiter gave us three tight-lipped smiles, didn't refill my water and played favorites with other tables. Tipping him was a painful experience. For your money, go to La Folie."

  • "Everything was perfect. I had the moules with frites. It was perfect. My friend with a very small appetite had the pork tenderloin with bacon. She ate the whole thing! We shared a beet salad with piñon nuts, goat cheese, and paper thin slices of potato. Heavenly. Dessert was a molten chocolate cake. Devine. A 5-star evening."

  • "This was our or fifth or sixth trip Chapeu and it just keeps getting better. Four of us had their Early Bird three course fixed price menu. The crab cake which was actually a small crab cake sitting in a bowl of tomato based soup was delicious. The soup was spicy and the crab cake crisp even though it was sitting in the soup. The scallops sitting on a bed of risotto were perfectly cooked, the risotto, full of flavor and chewy, not soft and mushy. We each had a different dessert, creme brulee, fruit napoleon, profiterole, french toast. Everything was excellent and just enough."

  • "California French - not too heavy and great food. The average age seemed to be high, but great neighborhood restaurant. Service was attentive though it was pretty busy."

  • "My husband and I have been wanting to come for a long time to Chapeau! because we love French food, and my best friend highly recommended this place. As soon as I got there, I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and the owner who shook my hand and said thank you for coming. The servers are all very professional, highly knowledgeable and super friendly. Even the guests were super friendly - looked like most of them are regulars as well. The food was perfectly cooked, perfectly presented and so delicious. All the ingredients were fresh and very appealing. Very good wine list with French wines as well as California wines. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Wow! What can I say but "Merci Beaucoup Pierre!" We had an incredible birthday gastronomic experience with Chef Pierre. He made my favorite steak tartare table-side to a huge round of applause. It wasn't even on the menu so we asked-what service. The entire dinner was superb and you made his Birthday so special, esp placing us at the corner table. Now he wants to come back regularly so we'll be seeing you again and again instead of just occasionally."

  • "Me and my finace recently dined at Chapeau, mainly because it is close to where we live and we were curious because we recently watched the restaurant being reviewed on Mystery Diner. The ambiance was really my only complaint. The restaurant is outdated, I don't think there was music playing, and tables were very close to one another, so you could easily hear your neighbors conversations. I chose the 3 course option. I wished that there were more appetizer choices, but the butternut squash soup I chose was very nice. My date got the duck for his entree and I got the mussels. Both good. There is no cocktail list (maybe if there was, and more of a bar, I would consider giving this another go)."

  • "Stopped by Chapeau on a recent trip to San Francisco. Had read great reviews in Trip Advisor and went anticipating a great meal and was not disappointed. Looking for parking on the street out front was a bit challenging…Found metered parking and also found the restaurant's owner/chef walking down the street at the same time. We didn't have any change for the meter and the owner paid the parking…Amazing and memorable. Food quality and service was exceptional. Will definitely repeat."

  • "I have worked within a block of Chapeau for many years and just tried it a few days ago. The price is very reasonable considering the excellent quality of the food. I went on a Monday night and the place was packed. The wait staff was very busy, so the service was rather slow. Other than that I have no complaints. The owner is very attentive and charming and I definitely plan on returning."

  • "According to the Chef / Owner Phllip, Chapeau without the "!" means hat. Chapeau!, however, means WOW! And WOW! it was. Dinner there reminded me of Paris -- the food, ambiance, the service. We liked it so much, we went back a few days later."

  • "Transport yourself to Paris where the couple next to you and the wait staff speaks fluent French. The dishes- confit of duck leg, French onion soup, cassoulet, escargot, and warm baguette are accompanied by a glass of wine from France. Prices are reasonable, especially the Early Bird Specials Sun-Thurs. Service very attentive. Tables can be cramped in this small neighborhood gem and the place is always packed on weekends."

  • "Really nice French restaurant! I went with my friend on a Sunday night. Owner greets us when we arrive. Our server was very attentive and knowledgable. We had the 3 courses menu. For appetizer, we had the trio of salmon and sweetbreads. Both were tasty and we were enjoyed. We had duck breast and filet mignon. The duck breast was decent, not too flavory in my opinion, but my friend loves it. My filet mignon on the other hand was excellent and flavory,I the meat completely melt on my tongue. For desert, we had hot chocolate cake and trio sorbet. They both were good, but we were so stuffed at this point so we couldn't even finish the desert. Overall, we really like chapeau and definitely would come back to try other food on the menu."

  • "Chapeau has superb French food. Everything on the menu is excellent. It's real French! The raw oysters were meaty and delicious, but that was the only dish that didn't have a French touch. We loved the "sweetbreads" in the rich mushroom and herb sauce. The green herbs were a nice touch and very tasty. Even the green salad had a nice vinaigrette dressing. But the cassoulet, the vegetable casserole (very artfully presented) and the sea bass dishes were amazing and very French. And the caramel meringue dessert and lemon tart were exceptional. Chapeau is definitely one of the top restaurants in SF. The meal was thoroughly enjoyable and the service quality was excellent! It also is a pretty restaurant with easy parking outside."
