Diner Reviews
  • "The mussels were great - the rest of the food definitely not so much. Service extremely slow - waited ages for food, had to try to nab passing waiters if needed something. Too noisy (it's a "live" room anyhow then the music is cranked up) should be able to easily talk to each other, and please lose that dryer in ladies room, hurts ears. Put back towels. Used to love this place - now might book somewhere else first."

  • "Food was great, though a tad overpriced. The service was excellent but the noise levels were too high. We had difficulty carrying on a conversation at our table."

  • "We went to Chambar as part of a blitz tour of Vancouver for a visiting friend and were not disappointed! It was exactly what we wanted in a restaurant to showcase the vibrant food scene. The restaurant is, of course, beautiful with a great atmosphere. It had an awesome, upbeat energy. The food was honestly some of the best food I have tried. The menu items are exotic, featuring squad and pheasant, but as also familiar, with a great steak and fish. Will 100% be going back."

  • "Chambar has excellent food and has a high tempo energy that is great for a night on the town with friends. However, my wife and I went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. While the food, wine, and service was top notch, it was very busy and not conducive to what was planned as a romantic night out. While I recommend Chambar for a gathering of friends, I cannot recommend it for a romantic night out."

  • "First time at Chambar.. heard they were good and definitely Chambar lived up to it.. if you are visiting Vancouver or local resident, must visit restaurant. Really enjoyed the food, and "East Van Vodka Coctail" was the best!! Cheers"

  • "The food and service were both amazing. I would highly recommend it. The noise level is high though so be prepared for that."

  • "The mussels frites were fabulous, but the portions of the mussels were too large. No room for most of the fries or any dessert!"

  • "Generally food and service were good. Biggest draw back is the noise level. Almost impossible to speak with anyone at our table in a normal tone. It made what could have been a really nice evening just good. Lots of large groups."

  • "Creative menu.Delicious food. Artistically plated. Especaily the Birthday girls's desert plate.Good service. We sat in the back of the restaurant which is very noisy, We were 7 at one table and hard to have a converstion at the other end of the table because of the level of noise."

  • "We really liked the food and the service, as well as the location of Chambar. There was one tiny glitch in the service which the staff apologized for and then made it up to us with a special dessert. We will go back!"

  • "As always, wonderful food, good wine. We had the mussels, all three versions. Prefer the vin blanc. As a retired food formulator, I would reduce the tomato and increase the coconut milk in the congolese version. Cumin spot on! Be sure to sop up the liquid with their great bread. Too full for dessert!"

  • "Our evening was wonderful. The noise level made conversation difficult at times and we were disappointed with how long it took for our first drinks to arrive, however our server was wonderful and did all he could to offset this. Would definitely recommend and return. Looking forward to seeing the new space when they move."

  • "Chambar was fantastic in every sense of the word, except for the fries which were disappointing. I am Belgian, so fries are definitely a point of pride for me, and the fries I got were tasteless and common- nothing like Belgian fries should taste. Apart from that, they have excellent food and an even better selection of Belgian beers- absolutely amazed at the variety! I got a meat plate, peppercorn new york steak, and it was delicious. Cooked to perfection (rare, thank you very much), and seasoned elegantly, it's a dish to remember. Though it was a loud restaurant, the experience was great overall. The mussels were very popular with other diners, and the cocktails looked great. 4/5 only because of loudness and fry disappointment."

  • "We were visiting Vancouver and Chambar came up a number of times from people in the City so we decided to go. The food was amazing, service was attentive and they we very accommodating with our almost 2 year old son. Will go back when we are back in Vancouver."

  • "As usual took some friends who were visiting town to Chambar. Although Vancouver has a great beer culture it's always nice to have a few Belgian beers and enjoy the terrific beer list at Chambar. Congolaise Mussels and Frittes is what I ordered and the mussels where cooked well, and I finished but just barely, very satisfying meal."

  • "Great restaurant, food was fantastic and servers friendly and attentive. Would suggest for reservations to indicate to customers that one half of the restaurant is very open, well lit and more family friendly, while the other half is more lounge/pub like - more romantic atmosphere - so that people know what they're getting. Overall, fabulous!"

  • "I've been here a few times now and never disappointed. The cocktails are fantastic, the food amazing, and the service is very professional, thoughtful, helpful, and unpretentious. The place does get noisy, but is still suitable for a romantic dinner. Highly recommended."

  • "That was the best food we've eaten in a while. The beet carpaccio appetizer was so amazing. The staff were excellent, and most helpful with the impressive Belgian beer list. Being a Friday night, it was packed and very noisy, but that's the price of success. We'll definitely be back..."

  • "Textures, flavors, presentation and serving sizes lacked consistency. Service was average at best. Foie gras was served warm and began to melt on plate. It was served with frozen cherry compote. The textures are a clash. Why frozen? Pheasant dish had good flavours with the exception of Spring roll which was too oily. The serving size was too small, closer to appetizer portion. Lamb shank lacked flavour and was served with/in a watery gravey/jus. The eggplant was served chilled?! Why chilled? It did not go with the rest of the dish at all served this way and was left We did not venture on to try desert as we had lost confidence in quality, and the desert menu didn't show much imagination. Wine list was not bad, but very expensive."

  • "Our Chambar experience was very good in some areas but lacking in others with an overall okay result. It was very busy and it took some time for the server to welcome us and take our drink order. Once ordered, it took quite some time for the order to arrive. Fortunately, when the drinks did arrive, the lambic beer that I ordered was very flavorful and refreshing. The server made some menu suggestions and we decided on the Cocotte mussels, followed by the lamb tajine and the veal tenderloin. The mussels were fresh, well prepared and delicious. The frites and sauce were equally delicious. Had the meal stopped there, I would have left an outstanding review but our mains especially the veal was lacking. Would go again for the mussels."

  • "We were pleased to find out that the Chambar was still open for another few weeks while they move to a location right next door. Great Belgian beer selection and wonderful seafood makes this a great choice. Wait staff are very knowledgable on both and were able to provide great selections to guide the meal without being pushy. May be closed in early July while the move takes place so stop in now."

  • "While the meal was tasty and nicely plated, my sense is that the prices are a bit too high. I could have dealt with that, but the back dinning room is just to loud and not conducive to comfortable dining with friends. I don't know whether it is the back of glass windows and brick walls, but the sound simply reverbarates in the room reaching, in my view, uncomfortable levels. We have enjoyed Chambar in the past, but I don't think I will return for a while."

  • "Chambar never ceases to deliver on ALL fronts - food is always excellent (we have eaten there at least 5-6 times in the last few months) - servers are spot on - knowledgeable and non-intrusive. The MOST important thing is that the music is tasteful and quite enough so you can actually hear the conversation that is taken place with the other people at your table! WAY TOO MANY other restaurants do NOT subscribe to this policy.... Would suggest Chambar for ANY occasion...."

  • "My partner and I went to Chambar to celebrate our one year anniversary and it was the perfect location! Red brick walls, candle lights, the energy, the food and the 5-star service made it an amazing experience for us! We started with "Canard Fume", then moved onto "Congolaise" and "Tajine d’aziz à l’agneau", and had "Jardin de Fraises" as desert. They were all soo yummy!! Everyone in Vancouver should definitely try this restaurant!"

  • "We were surprised by the laid back and interesting interior: the funky mix of lighting and decor made us feel relaxed and glad that we were not underdressed in jeans. The attractive clientele looked to be mostly in their 30's and 40's with several tables of all girls. We ordered a couple of interesting cocktails, then switched to their extensive beer list. We ordered the mussels in coconut/tomato/lime sauce and the rack of lamb, and for dessert we had their version of Tiramisu - light wafer carmel things with mouse and other goodness. Everything was delicious. When I go back, I would share one main dish and split an appetizer because the portions are large."

  • "this is the perfect party scene restaurant not the perfect 3rd anniversary romantic dinning experience. my wife felt that she had to rush through her dishes because of the volume of noise and crowded conditions(I had to squeeze between to very tight tables to get to my seat and even then there was no room to turn around without hitting my neighbour in the head with my butt when I sat down) I can see why this venue is popular with groups, it lends itself to party mode but not for the intimate dinning experience. Some of the dishes were very good and presented in an aesthetically pleasing manner but the pheasant was a little dry and stringy. The evening started with a very average martini and ended with an astringent desert ."

  • "What I love most about Chambar is the unique cocktails and food. I love reading the cocktail list and trying out new flavors - it's always a tasty adventure :) The service is always fabulous, too. The servers are attentive, but do not hover and I also appreciate their expert advice on what is especially yummy that day. Thanks for making our dining experience fun and special."

  • "Excellent dinner - lamb, salmon and halibut all well prepared and appealing. Good service and friendly. No trouble getting out in time to make it to a concert at Rogers Place but expect to spend at least 2 hours at dinner."

  • "We were looking for a nice restaurant in the area and came across Chambar as a well-received option. We had the Boeuf et Champignons, the Moules Frites - Coquotte, and the Gnocchi side. The food was fantastic - my one complaint would be that half of the gnocchi dish was beets, which wasn't even listed on the menu! (And we both detest beets). Service was nothing special, and our server was quite neglectful at times - there was probably an 8-10 minute period that we didn't even see her, which despite not sounding long, is a bit frustrating when you're waiting for a top-up on water! In any case, overall it was a very pleasant experience, and though it's not a place I'm rushing back to, I'd have no hesitation to going again :)"

  • "I surprised my fiancée on his birthday on June 17 by bringing him to Chambar for dinner. He loves it here. We had a great server, David, and the food was fantastic as usual. We had a reservation however since our table wasn't quite ready when we arrived we sat at the bar for a drink. The cocktails we ordered where great. The only thing we did not like was the "lamb collar" appetizer. Everything else was fantastic as usual. Thanks for a wonderful evening!"

  • "Incredible food & cocktails. All the components are perfectly balanced & plated beautifully. Cocktails are varied & unlike what you would get anywhere else. Everything was timed well, we didn't have to wait long but we weren't rushed either. The servers are attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable. The decor is warm & comfortable while staying chic & simple. Wood floors, large artwork & huge windows, wrought-iron doors, heavy wood tables. 5 stars except toward the end of our dinner a large party came in with about 10 little kids (bring them somewhere else!) and it became very loud. My husband LOVED the Boeuf et champignons, it was the highlight of his dining experience. As far as cocktails, try the Palomino's Fortress & the Smoke Show."

  • "We took Dad here for dinner on Father's Day and thoroughly enjoying the meal and service. Food was well presented and yummy! We never felt rushed but at the same time food was presented in a timely manner by two polite servers. I had foie gras followed by moules and frites - delicious, my other two dinner guests enjoyed the veal tenderloin. We will definitely go back again."
