A word from Chalkboard
Chalkboard restaurant, open May 2013 under Executive Chef Shane McAnelly, offers a modern small plates menu emphasizing seasonal and technique-driven fare. McAnelly sources much of his menu from local purveyors and farms, with many ingredients coming from the restaurant’s own dedicated 3-acre vegetable and herb garden located at nearby Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards. Highlights on the daily changing menu include crudos and tartare, house-made pastas, just picked salads, roasted and grilled meats and seafood. The dining room has been completely remodeled into a contemporary and welcoming space with an open kitchen, new banquettes, hardwood floors, hand-forged iron finishes. The bar has also been renovated to create a lively environment with new finishes such as a Carrera marble bar-top. Offerings of local wine flights and an extensive list of wine-by-the-glass are a major focus at Chalkboard, as well the cocktail menu inspired by fresh ingredients from the Chalk Hill garden.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "What stands out is the willingness for the chef to make a meal for a vegan that is not entirely on the menu! Well done!"

  • "What a drop in quality. The landlord gets rid of CYRUS, which was world class, and puts in a mediocre restaurant like Chalkboard. During our visit there were more staff in the kitchen than customers in the restaurant. Go to Baci Cafe & Wine Bar, which is much better than Chalkboard."

  • "Food was excellent and service was outstanding. One of our best experiences this trip."

  • "We have been to Chalkboard on numerous occasions. The food is always good, not great, but good. The "small plate" concept, which we like actually, seems more and more popular; but there is a downside. You often wait a while for any dish, then get multiple dishes all at once--even when trying to achieve some reasonable pacing by ordering just a few at at time or telling the server (which often seems pointless) how you would like the dishes to be served. Such was our last experience at Chalkboard. The restaurant was packed, and we are happy for their apparent success, but it seemed the staff was intent on rapid turn-over. While the servers are pleasant enough, it just doesn't make for a pleasant dining experience."

  • "The service and ambience were excellent in this restaurant. My glass was never empty and the food pacing was very nice. The only negative about this place I found was the table of loud women sitting close to us and that of course had nothing to do with the restaurant. While I wouldn't call Chalkboard inexpensive, everything we had was well worth the price and I will definitely be returning and recommending it to friends."

  • "everything was delicious - great service and wonderful food - will plan on going again! I am very picky and this exceeded my expectations"

  • "We sat at the bar and ate a little of everything, crudo, tartare, fritto misto, artichoke/fava salad, liver on toast, asparagus with that inevitable 63(?) degree egg and melted leeks... We were consistently impressed with each course. Come here, eat, drink and be merry."

  • "We made a last minute reservation based on our hotel's recommendation. We checked once earlier in the day and nothing was available, then a few hours later as we were browsing OpenTable for another restaurant, 8:15 at Chalkboard popped up and we snagged it immediately! So glad we did! We actually gave up our table as there were seats available at the bar, and we prefer that. The food was incredible. We had the grilled asparagus (the grits and egg set this dish apart), the beef tartare (flavorful and delicious, but the beef was overshadowed by the other ingredients), the buttermilk fried quail, the pretzel crusted filet, and the cheese plate (the caveman blue was to die for!) Just perfect after a day of wine tasting and wandering the town."

  • "If you liked Pres a Vi or Va Di Vi then you will LOVE Chalkboard. Nothing will replace Cyrus as one of the best restaurants in the world that resided in this location for many years, but Chalkboard will make you grieve less. Pork Belly sliders on homemade biscuits, tuna tartar, beef sliders were all standouts. We had 4 plates between 2 adults and it was under $50 for a high quality lunch in Healdsburg. We would make the 2 hour drive from the Peninsula just to come here, it was that good."

  • "The food here was exquisite. Went with my parents and sister while vacationing in Healdsburg, and everything we ate was delicious. The crab tater tots were wonderful, as was the spring onion soup. We also enjoyed the crudo of the day ( ), the grilled asparagus, the ricotta gnudi (so good, as soft as pillows), the seared scallops, and the buttermilk fried quail. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious. For dessert, we had the donuts, which were great, and the flourless chocolate cake, which was fine, not as nice as the rest of the meal. Service style is a little odd - seemed that we had two waiters who kept switching off throughout the night. Both servers were friendly though, and the food was amazing. Would definitely return."

  • "We ate here because friends had recommended it. The food was nearly inedible, most of it went back to the kitchen uneaten. What was surprising was that the server either didn't notice or didn't care. The service was very good but didn't make up for the food. Most of the grilled items were closer to charcoal than grilled. The shrimp was awful. Sliders were terrible. It's a shame because the setting, location and service are good."

  • "This restaurant serves innovative food without overdoing the use of unusual ingredients the way that some restaurants that are trying too hard do. The grilled chicory salad that I had there was probably the best salad that I have ever had. And the candy bar dessert that my husband and I split was a noble end of a memorable dinner."

  • "Sensationally prepared, beautifully conceived small plates -- explosions of flavor in every bite, perfectly paired with flights of subtly different wines. Not cheap, but a terrific value, and an exciting lunch. We'll tell our friends, and we'll be back!"

  • "Good place. We know the Chef, the GM and some servers from another place we go frequesntly. They spun off to this place so we wanted to try it. Good selection, unique preparations, good experience all around."

  • "Loved our server who was outstanding and very knowledgeable of the menu. There is lots of small plates that are meant to be shared and that way you get lots of choices, tastes and dining adventures......everything from pork belly biscuits to buttermilk chicken to scallops on risotto cakes and more...really fun experience!!"

  • "Same location as Cyrus BUT soooo different in many ways. Small plates galore. Every plate we tried was really really good. Start with the pork belly biscuits, carrots never so good, baked brussels ummmm good. As they say, try it , you'll like it.... a lot. Service, very good, prices very fair. Make certain you have a reservation. We'll be back for sure."

  • "Great small plates menu with enough diversity to have choices but not overwhelming! The scallops, pork belly biscuits and grilled chicory salad and brussel sprouts were standouts. Save room for dessert...the donuts and candy bar are sublime."

  • "Nice place, great service and food. Didn't appreciate our seating in the corner as the ONLY party next to the couple with a small child ( do love the kids but when you want to get away to some peace and. enjoy a great meal...) . Would go again-our waiter was very funnyand had good timing with our order."

  • "They've really figured out the small plates concept. They wowed us with intense flavors and varied textrues, beautifully presented. Very knowledgeable and helpful wait staff and a warm and friendly atmopshere. coktails were great and the wine list superb."

  • "There are so many tasty items on the menu you'll want to order nearly all of them. Though highly recommended by a local, we found the dungenous crab tater tots a bit uninspired, but everything else was fantastic. The lumachine mac 'n cheese with duck confit was unbelievably tasty...and rich. The yellowtail jack crudos...mmmm! The fried brussel sprouts made me want to eat vegetables more often. Of course, the day boat scallops were a pleaser and we topped it off (though we didn't need to) with the braised short rib sliders with blue cheese and bacon. Surprised we could walk back to our B&B afterward."

  • "Although the entire restaurant scene in Healdsburg and surrounding areas have upped their game, Chalkboard is already a winner in an enviable circle of truly exceptional restaurants--do not miss the sliders, and make sure you ask the knowledgeable waitstaff what wines go with which dishes. Though the menu is mostly "small plates" - they are surprisingly large, and even more tasty than the descriptions on the menu. I hope it continues to thrive."

  • "My husband, of 36 years, and I spent a fun evening drinking favorite wines as we chose a small plate(or two) from each of the food options on the menu. We shared and remarked about the excellent preparation and delicious sauces and herbs with each dish. We topped the evening with the sweet and salty candy bar dessert. We were in the mood for romance and Chalkboard delivered!"

  • "We were not especially hungry, but we wanted to try Chalkboard. Our waiter, Vito, was delightful, humorous and quite helpful. We ordered the crab tater tots (forgot their real name) and the pork belly sliders. The crab tots were quite good, and fit the small plate moniker. The pork belly sliders were absolutely delicious, and the portion (four decent sized ones) was quite generous. We were not hungry enough for dessert, but they read quite well on the menu. It was a very enjoyable evening and the price was actually quite reasonable. We WILL be back to Chalkboard on future visits to Healdsburg."

  • "we have enjoyed chalkboard since it opened! lovely service and if something is not quite right, they fix it right away. i find the plates are just right for sharing, some men may find it "not quite enough" but so many tasty tidbits to choose from it would be crazy to walk away hungry."

  • "Wonderful service. Great wine menu - as you'd hope given its location! The menu is fun and innovative, celebrating fresh, local ingredients... but not overdone. Portion size was right for sharing. Enjoyed the evening... would have liked a little spacing between dishes so we could stay longer!"

  • "I always want to have the same thing when I go to Chalkboard because i fell in love with the sliders and tempura green beans with black garllic aoli. I had the sliders but the green beans were not in season so I had the fried broccoli instead. It was quite good and a new way to serve broccoli. It gave me some ideas for cooking it differently at home. My dinner companion thought the Kim Chee influenced sauce was too strong but I liked a small amount of it on the broccoli. The cold pressed asian pear slices in the broccoli dish was a nice balance to the spicy sauce. You can't go wrong with the short rib sliders, I could eat them every time. The crab tater tots were ok."

  • "The food was spot on. First time visiting chalkboard, can't wait to go back. Have to have the sliders again, oh and the shrimp and grits. Staff treated our 10 month old like an adult, made dining out easy!"

  • "This restaurant has it all. Some of the best of food I have ever had. Period. No hyperbole. Terrific, friendly, knowledgeable service. A true fine dining experience. Go now."

  • "I love tapas restaurants for the easy ability to try many things and share with fellow diners and Chalkboard does a great job and the food is mind blowing. I didn't think it was possible, but everything we got was better than the last item. Services was impeccable and the atmosphere was intimate, but exciting -- loved the open kitchen."

  • "Chalkboard serves small plates of imaginative seasonal fare from salads, to seafood and lots in between. Stand out dishes on this visit were their mac n' cheese with duck confit, scallops on a risotto cake, yellowtail crudo, and crab tater tots! Also fun are their flights of wine which give one the opportunity to taste three wines. Desserts are also delicious. My only complaint is that the room can get very noisy, especially when the group table is filled. There were empty tables during our visit (on a Monday night) and it would have been nicer to have been seated way from this table especially since I'd made the reservation at least two weeks in advance."

  • "Bottom line, the amount you pay for the portion size is ridiculous! This place is a RIP OFF!"

  • "I really wanted to like this place. It gets such great reviews so I had very high expectations. The fried brussels sprouts was by far the best dish. Crispy and lots of caramelization. Mac & cheese with duck confit was also good but not so much duck. Baby turnips were just plain bland. Also had the toasted fusilli pasta with dungeness crab - the pasta was way overcooked and mushy and there was hardly any crab. These are small plates and it's fairly high priced for what you get. I live locally so I may give it one more shot when they change the menu. Our waitress was fine but there was another young woman who also brought us out some of our dishes and she had quite the puss on her face every time she served us. Not a happy camper."

  • "We enjoyed the pork belly sliders, the snake bite tartare, cheese plate, candy bar. Less impressive were the crab tater tots and scallops. Prices are decent for the area and the wine, beer and mixed drink list is good. The only real issue with the place is that the noise level was too high with the place crowded to even have a conversation or hear the server. The seating for two is crammed in along a bench so close that there are mere inches between tables, barely enough to squeeze past and certainly not enough for any privacy in conversation even if you didn't have to yell to hear each other."

  • "Our experience at Chalkboard was so perfect the first time we went that we returned five days later and had the same wonderful experience. The food is delicious and the chef takes charge of creating exciting and different dishes in every category on the menu. I'd recommend Chalkboard to anyone who is interested in tasting food in an interesting and delicious way."

  • "We loved our dinner! We enjoyed 4 small plates and had the crab tater tots, duck mac and cheese, scallops, and filet. We absolutely loved everything, and it was hands down the best dinner we had during our week of vacation. They had a great wine selection, but we took advantage of the $15 corkage fee to enjoy some wine we picked up earlier in the day. We would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "We ate at the Chalk Board last fall, and it was wonderful. I am not sure what changed, however, it could have been just an off night. Our server, while very nice, was not as good as the one we had before. We brought friends with us and we were looking forward to an excellent dining experience. While everything was good, it just did not have the little extra that I remembered from our first visit."
