A word from Chalkboard
Chalkboard restaurant, open May 2013 under Executive Chef Shane McAnelly, offers a modern small plates menu emphasizing seasonal and technique-driven fare. McAnelly sources much of his menu from local purveyors and farms, with many ingredients coming from the restaurant’s own dedicated 3-acre vegetable and herb garden located at nearby Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards. Highlights on the daily changing menu include crudos and tartare, house-made pastas, just picked salads, roasted and grilled meats and seafood. The dining room has been completely remodeled into a contemporary and welcoming space with an open kitchen, new banquettes, hardwood floors, hand-forged iron finishes. The bar has also been renovated to create a lively environment with new finishes such as a Carrera marble bar-top. Offerings of local wine flights and an extensive list of wine-by-the-glass are a major focus at Chalkboard, as well the cocktail menu inspired by fresh ingredients from the Chalk Hill garden.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I recently dined at chalkboard while staying at Hotel Les Mars. It was our anniversary and they immediately brought sparking wine to our table to congratulate us. The food was amazing. Loved the grilled calamari and sliders. We also enjoyed the cocktails- nice change after a day of wine tasting. Don't miss this place!"

  • "Had dinner here after a day of sightseeing - staff was very welcoming and helpful, which is sadly somewhat uncommon when one is traveling solo. Every course was perfection, and the flights perfectly complemented my food. Waiter was knowledgeable, helpful, and attentive without being obtrusive. Highly recommended."

  • "My husband and I organized a family birthday celebration at Chalkboard for our 25 year daughter. All nine diners gave the experience 5+ stars. We sampled many diverse dishes and found each to be fresh, flavorful, and creatively prepared. Several of our guests commented that Chalkboard ranks among their all time favorite restaurants. We will definitely be back the next time we visit Healdsburg."

  • "Californian cuisine can be boring, but that is not the case at Chalkboard. The dishes were inventive and well executed. This place is excellent, and this is coming from a harsh critic who is unhappy with many restaurants outside of San Francisco."

  • "I've been to Chalkboard many times since it opened a year ago and have never been disappointed in the food. I am gluten intolerant and the wait staff has always been helpful in pointing out which choices are safe for me to eat. I had a friend visiting from out of town who had never been to Chalkboard so we decided to go there for dinner one night. I specifically requested their al fresco dining as I knew that inside seating can be overly noisy thus making it difficult to converse. We ordered their pre fixe menu which was a rare offering and two paired wine tastings. Everything was sensational. Although we had a great waiter, the food and wine didn't always come at the same time--but he did his best to remedy the issue."

  • "The food was hit and miss. Good service. I wish Cyrus never closed down in that location as many others feel as well. Cyrus will be missed."

  • "Chef McAnelly cooks the same here as he did at Va de Vi, so if you are Michael Bauer you will love him. If you are not, then like us you will find the food sometimes good but all too often sloppy. Duck liver crostini were good, but beef tartare was disgraceful: poorly trimmed of fat, chopped in thick unattractive shreds. Grilled asparagus were perfect, but the vaunted "63.3 degree egg" was nothing of the sort--61 degrees at most, with an egg white like cloudy mucus. Spicy shrimp weren't fresh. The spicy sausage pasta was wonderful, but the duck confit mac'n'cheese was a leaden lump. Service was condescending (we don't look like people who spend five figures/yr dining out, but we are). You'll find us at Spoon Bar a block down!"

  • "Loved it. As last time, food is interesting and tasty, service perfect. The arugula/nectarine salad was refreshing, the quail light and complex. The tartare was meaty, not over processed, seasoned well and lovely presentation. The new patio is very nice. Need to make this our go to spot for our regular "Healdsburg Hobble""

  • "Food was delicious and unusual. We shared starters and dessert, but had individual mains. Highlights: the pulled pork biscuits, and the doughnuts."

  • "Chalkboard never disappoints! As a local, I appreciate being able to get a table on the weekend. Food is inventive and delicious! The pork belly biscuits are so good they need to be sold by the dozen to take home! I am a fan of the bar and fabulous drinks, and sitting in the "library" after dinner is a pleasure! Finally, the staff sets just the right tone of warmth and efficiency. They always make us feel welcome and we leave satisfied and looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "Our dinner experience was nice. Small portions and 4 to 5 are suggested. You can taste different dishes and combine that with some nice wine. Very creative food combinations. I highly recommend Chalkboard, it was a nice experience."

  • "It was my boyfriend's 50th birthday and being from Healdsburg, he decided that he wanted to go to Chalkboard for his birthday dinner. What a treat! Our waitress and the manager picked 2 different glasses of wine to go with each of our dishes, so we were able to see for ourselves what worked best. Service was amazing, food came out at good intervals, and overall it was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time."

  • "We took our son, who was home from college, here for the second time at his request. We were greeted immediately at the door and were given a couple of seating choices. We sat outside for the first time. What a pleasurable experience. Nice secluded and beautiful courtyard. Love the interaction that develops making menu choices. Our reserved son became quite involved and talkative as the evening evolved. Food was both interesting and excellent. Waitress was exceptional too! Love this place!"

  • "Every dish we ordered was amazing. There were four of us dining for fathers day dinner and we probably ordered at least 10 dishes off the menu. It was all around a very memorable experience the food was exceptional. We loved all the food and the loungy outdoor seating. The staff was attentive and very helpful. The coconut cream pie was possibly the highlight. All of the flavors worked so well together."

  • "Better a bar than restaurant. Small plates "eclectic"( 'confused' or 'not integrated'.) Diverse selection interestingly seasoned, fairly well cooked dishes--they're well presented. CAL spin on food reflecting worldwide range of herbs and seasonings--forunately not in one dish. The variety of offerings makes transition from one course/dish to another displeasing. The flavors from the lst course linger and are most often not complementary. Very smart--they sell wines by 1/2 glass, glass, etc. Actually some of dishes difficult to pair w wine. Altho I dont drink, beer might be better."

  • "We are local and had been wanting to try Chalkboard for some time. We finally dined there in Father's Day with our 10 and 8 year old budding foodies and had a fabulous experience. Everything was delicious, but the pasta dishes,l pork belly biscuits and beef sliders were standouts. And the donut duo with tangerine glaze. Holy yum. Gorgeous interior, great service...a 5-star experience! While the restaurant is not geared toward kids, we went on the early side and it was perfect! The service was upbeat and friendly...we all enjoyed our celebration."

  • "With the addition of outdoor dining, and its continued commitment to great food, Chalkboard remains one of our favorite restaurant. Chef Shane has kept the menu alive with the "oldie" hits such as the pork belly biscuits, while also introducing specials such as the salmon crostini. We took the whole family for Fathers Day and it was my son's first time. He is a bit of a foodie and we had talked up Chalkoard so much that I was worried he might be disappointed. I shouldn't have worried, as he said it was easily one of the best meals he had had in a long time. Go to Chalkboard, you won't regret it."

  • "I stumbled upon Chalkboard while looking for a place to eat in Healdsburg, and was drawn in by the menu and great prices. Eating there, I was blown away by the food. The two pastas we ordered--the squid ink gigli and the saffron fusilli--were some of the best pastas I've ever had. The gigli was both rich and light, and made me hungrier as I ate it. The truffle butter was amazing. The fusilli was tangy and salty and was beautifully prepared with octopus, capers, olives and breadcrumbs. The hamachi crudo was also fantastic, and I loved the crunchy quinoa playing off of the fresh cubes of fish and kimchi-style squash. The pacing of the meal was a bit slow, but overall everything was fantastic. I can't wait to return."

  • "With luck, I find myself free after the main lunch rush on some afternoons. That's when Chalkboard comes to mind as a spot to enjoy lunch by myself. The service is welcoming and the menu is interesting. The King's Ransom cocktail is a perfect starter. You can choose to mix and match and enjoy small plates in any arrangement. Save room for desserts!"

  • "Didn't know much about the restaurant but saw it listed on YELP. Food was delicious and the wine flights were very generous pours. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive and yet subtle. Nice ambience, a good find! We'll be back."

  • "Every dish we had was presented and served like a gift from the kitchen! We tried 7 small plates including a wonderful wild king salmon crudo special, incredible grilled shrimp in an Asian preparation as well as delicious dayboat scallops. The amazing dessert, the Candy Bar ended the wonderful dinner on a high note--my husband keeps talking about it and describes it as a deconstructed candy bar. Our server was excellent and so excited to deliver each course--this added to making this such a special meal."

  • "We were a party of six and came out of Chalkboard very enthused and happy. The small plates were plenty to share between couples. We ordered four dishes per couple and had plenty of food, plus an explosion of wonderful favors in our mouths! Server knew the food well, except for his handling of a special dietary need. It caused some concern with the gluten free member of our party. Would definitely go back!"

  • "A fun small plates restaurant in the heart of healdsburg. The small plates had plenty to share amongst the three of us. Some real standout dishes inducing the best steak tartar I have ever had to start the meal and an amazing sticky toffee pudding with green apple foam (which nicely cuts the sweet) to end the meal. Disappointed in the two pasta dishes (good but pasta was tough in both pasta dishes ordered. Sad). Good awareness of food allergies which is a plus. Beautiful, relaxing space with great service that was attentive but not intrusive. "

  • "Went ere a few months back. Still thinking about the meal months later. The pastas were spot on and cooked perfectly. We loved the pork biscuit sliders. Also the choices for a vegetarian were perfect. Chef's menu is very seasonal and well received but the people. Sean (GM) was very pleasant as well coming by and checking on our experience ever once in a while, nice touch... I have been back twice while driving up in the north bay."

  • "Chalkboard was a great experience. It has a fun and inventive menu. The menu changes frequently so what we had may not be there in the near future. It's one of those restaurants that uses local market foods(product). The sauces are inventive and delicious, preparation is well done with a simple and elegant presentation. Scallops were done perfectly which is very tough to do. "

  • "We have been here several times, and the food is just amazing as well as the presentations. But this is the third time in a row we have had poor or very poor service. Waitress was totally aloof, didn't seem to have a clue about drinks from the bar and when we did order them, it took 20 minutes to have them delivered. The place isn't that big and wasn't that busy as we were pretty early on a Saturday night so we couldn't figure it out. We will go back for the food but sure hope they get their act together with some more experienced wait staff."

  • "The food is high quality, but the portion sizes can be something out of Portlandia. If you're sharing like we were with a group of 5 there's not a lot to go around and the prices are high. 2 scallops for $18. Soup shots for $3. Little tiny knives to divvy up food might be useful. "
