Diner Reviews
  • "Loved the fact that I could get sweet breads though prefer it as a starter since the dish is so rich, The salad was very refreshing and was perfectly dressed. The duck was tasty and tender. The potato leek soup was also quite light which was a surprise. Am going to be a regular."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the patio. The dinner and service were excellent."

  • "My first visit here, but surely not the last. The menu is varied and quality of food was excellent. Service staff has been there for a long time, and their desire to make dining pleasant is very evident - but not overdone."

  • "We were greeted by the owner enthusiastically, the table was great, the waitress was friendly and professional. Escargot were hot and delicious. My wife had the petrale which she loved. I had the lamb shanks which were cooked perfectly, but the sauce, to my taste was a little bland. The salads were fine, a little too much dressing, but that is a taste issue. The soup was perfect. Enjoyable dinner, we will be back."

  • "Lovely little place on the edge of San Rafael. Our server, Linda, was most accommodating and amusing. The specials we had (sole and duck) were outstanding! Chocolate mousse lightest and tastiest I've had in a long time. Nicely stocked bar. All in all, everything you want from a nice night out to dinner and not TOO pricey."

  • "Chalet Basque has been in San Rafael for a long while. The food and service has always been great. We had moved out of the area nine years ago. This was one of the few times that we have been able to visit during that time. In fact, our server was the same one that served us in the long past. I had lamb shank which was very good. My wife also enjoyed her salmon. If you are looking for a dependable restaurant in Marin County, this is it."

  • "This place is like having dinner at a good friend's house. The service is great and everyone is friendly. The filet mignon my wife ordered was outstanding. My NY steak was great too. The house made pate was some of the best I have ever had. The wines are reasonable and there is a good selection."

  • "We have been going there for years. That speaks for itself. We keep going back. Wait staff are all super friendly as is Roger himself."

  • "Food was a bit expensive for the quality. Salad needs more than greens an a slice of tomato - wouldn't tak too much to take it up a notch. Rice or potatoes bland . Vegies over cooked. I'd suggest they Cut back on the number of choices and up the quality."

  • "Food was excellent, service a little slow at the end, warm welcome from the owner. We will go back, and in warmer weather look forward to dining outdoors."

  • "It is a Basque treat: Great food, wonderful wait staff and a multi tiered wine list with something for everyone. Began with the artichoke hearts with hollandaise sauce...a must have, by the way...and then enjoyed the leek soup family style, the chilled salad for all, some with cheese and some without, followed by our favorite main courses: Sweetbreads and Veal Piccata. Our Valentine's Day guests both had the Chicken C... Bleu. They loved it. I had a perfect Manhattan from the bar to begin and we shared a lovely bottle of red wine at a reasonable price All four of us agreed that we will be back sooner than we usually return because this is one of our favorite spots in all of North-Central Marin."

  • "Food is always excellent. I believe it has changed hands but they still have the same menu and it's always good. A lot of French items too."

  • "My main course, rack of lamb, was over cooked and the sauce almost smelled like it was burnt. I have been at the restaurant before and the food is usually fine. This time very disappointing."

  • "The food was superb and was the service! The cost is very reasonable too."

  • "Chalet Basque has solid food & service, but as a 50-something I think I was about the youngest person there. Perfect for folks of a certain age who enjoy this sort of thing, but I prefer a more modern style."

  • "This restaurant is such a nice surprise as the food is really excellent, while the decor is stuck in the past. We have returned several times in the last few months. The food is consistently cooked perfectly. Service can be slow if busy as there seem to be only two servers for the entire restaurant. The bar area has several booths for diners who enjoy the bar scene. We love that area, but maybe the servers are spread too thin to serve both rooms well. We shall continue to return and work our way through the menu. The liquor choices are very up to date and the bartender is great! Martinis fab and Manhattans made with all the best ingredients. Maybe we should go now!"

  • "Overall the food was good but I didn't feel it was exceptional. I eat Duck confit but the meat was not falling out of the bone like I believe it should. Plenty of quantity though. Great selection of wines."

  • "This was our first time at the Cafe Basque and we enjoyed it very much. The menu was definitely different and gave us chance to experiment with some new dishes. Our waiter waiter, Charles (?) (from Guatemala) was very helpful and really friendly. He helped make our experience very pleasant."

  • "I hadn't seen beef tongue or sweetbreads or rabbit offered on a menu for a long time and loved the idea that they were avaialable along with other more usual fare such as salmon, pasta, chicken or vegetarian options. I had the sweetbreads and loved them. The service was very friendly and we enjoyed ourselves a lot. We definitely would go back."

  • "Wasn't sure if the restaurant would still be good -- hadn't been there in 30 years. It was amazingly busy on a Saturday night, and the food was excellent! Had a party of eight and everybody enjoyed different types of meals--loved my prawns, perfect cooked and served HOT! People loved the petrale sole too."

  • "The atmosphere is friendly, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable. In particular I go there for lunch on Fridays for sand dabs. Clearly they are fresh, expertly prepared, and lunch includes homemade soup or salad. In addition to the full menu featuring country french cuisine, there usually are 3 or so "specials" every day. When the weather is mild, the outdoor patio is a perfect place to enjoy the sunshine as well as a delicious meal."

  • "We have been going to this restaurant for years, and we love it! Roger and his son always greet us with a welcoming smile. The staff are equally friendly and fun to chat with. Linda is an amazing waitress, and has been working there for as long as we can remember, which speaks volumes about the restaurant. We have tasted much of the menu and have never been disappointed. Sometimes, we just go down to enjoy a drink in their nostalgic bar and talk with people from the neighborhood! If you haven't enjoyed a meal at Le Chalet Basque, you need to put it on your calendar for 2014! It is a must!"

  • "I've never had a bad meal there. the New York steak with Bearnaise sauce and it was cooked perfect. My friend had the beef bourginione and the beef was so tender and the sauce was wonderful."

  • "This restaurant really needs to get a clue and move into this century. While it is not awful, it is simply dreary. The food is simply OK, not exciting in any way. The service is well-meaning but unprofessional, not what one expects from "fine dining." The menu, decor and service all desperately need an update. The only reason to go to this restaurant is that it is convenient to the Civic Center and symphony hall."

  • "You'll love Chalet Basque, with the same owners. We stopped in on a flyer having only seen the name online. To our delight, the menu is full of house-made items like the pate, plus Basque cooking. Excellent martini with the chipped ice afloat on top. We loved the charcuterie starter, then manhattan clam chowder, salad and our entrees. You can't knock the 50's style value! The bar is full of regulars and there's a homey feel in the somewhat faded decor. My duck a'la Orange was great and my partner's Dover Sole was a knockout. We wrapped up with a Gateau Basque and friendly chat with Roger, the owner and his son and their relatives visiting from France. All this plus some good wine values made it a great evening out. We'll be back for sure."

  • "My late husband and I were weekly lunch guests here for many years. Now I rarely get back but I'm never disappointed. At dinner last night I had the petrale sole, prepared just as I ask (sans batter) and it was spectacular. Like that soup and salad are included with entree but not in such large portions as to hamper the enjoyment of the rest of your meal."

  • "Chalet Basque reminds me of all the wonderful village cafes and restaurants I've encountered in travels to Italy, France, Spain, Germany. It's casual and neighborhood friendly, but there is pride in the food being prepared. The bar is like an international version of "cheers". There's a sense that you're a friend not a customer. On a nice day sit in the patio. Otherwise a booth in the bar is my favorite. We went for Thanksgiving and had a lovely 4 course meal at a very reasonable price. I had rack of lamb -a generous 6 rib serving cooked to perfection. Another in my group had a wonderful boeuf bourgignon, and of course there was turkey. The soup and salad were excelkent. The service was attentive as always. I'll be going again soon."

  • "We had a party of 7 getting together the nite before the larger Thanksgiving party at home. The waiter was very helpful, knowledgeable, attentive. We each found something we liked on the menu- from liver to prawns and a delicious boeuf bourginon. The salad was fresh and none of us had room for dessert, the portions are very generous. The only part we thought was mediocre was the potato leek soup. I want to go back in warmer weather- they have a great patio for outside seating. Parking was easy, too."

  • "The Chalet Basque has remained one my primary dining destinations since leaving the Bay Area 30 years ago. The personnel treat me as if I were an old friend who had never left. The informality and warmth generated by Roger, the owner, and all his staff make you always feel special and welcome. Mostly importantly, the cooking is superb. The Chalet Basque gets five stars from me."
