Diner Reviews
  • "The food and the service was excellent. My only negative comment is that the table we were given was way at the back of the restaurant with no ventilation and the air was quite warm and stuffy."

  • "Please, please, try a period with NO MUSIC - suggest 5.30 to 7.30 for the older crowd. If you must have music not the inane base- only throbbing you had on August 1. I cannot recommend your restaurant because of the horrible noise which everyone had to talk above."

  • "I have been coming to 'cesca for a number of years even when the food quality had dipped because the overall experience was very pleasant. So it was a pleasure to return last night to find the kitchen in renewed top form. "

  • "Maybe that old adage about not eating out in a NYC restaurant on a Monday night is true after all? Not sure. Took a group of four there on Monday night. Slow service on drinks. Waiter was fine, but seemed to be covering a lot of floor. Ordered apps to share; got rabbit, octopus and tuna. Tuna was browning, had clearly been out in the heat a bit too long, portion was tiny. Octopus could have used a nice long 20-25 massage before poaching and grilling. The rabbit was the only saving grace, it was tasty. The mains were fine, except my steak had sat in the window for way too long and by the time it got to me, it was less than luke-warm, it was downright cold. There was no check-back, so I had to walk the plate back to the kitchen."

  • "We had dinner here on a Sunday evening with an elderly and frail friend and two young (20s) people. We were seated in the back where the noise level was tolerable and, at least, there was no piped in music from the bar, which is in the front. The menu is extensive enough to suit a variety of tastes. We find the small versions of the pasta are large enough for a main course when we have a first course or salad. (Size is European menu size.) The sauces are rich. With one bottle of wine, appetizer, and main dish for five, we paid almost $300. Service was very good. We were not rushed to make dinner decisions and no one took plates away from those of us who finished early, thank goodness!! Overall a good experience for our friends."

  • "I've come to expect great service, wonderful food and an excellent experience. Brought four cousins visiting the city. They loved their meals (pork chop, veal bolognese, pork chop, chicken liver ravioli). Our server allowed us tome to chat. Great energy. Overall, another great evening."

  • "I followed some of the recommendations from other patrons and was delighted. We tried the steamed muscles in a saffron lemon grass sauce paired with the Bergaglio Gavi by the glass and were very pleased. As a follow on we had the Milanese (breaded veal chop) and the roasted chicken, both were perfectly done and paired nicely with the Sassaia, a Super Piedmont red. The service was attentive and not overbearing making for a great evening out. We look forward to our return."

  • "Used to be better. Nice room. Decent service. Marginal food."

  • "Cesca is a neighborhood restaurant with consistently good, fresh, carefully prepared food. The only thing that keeps me from going very frequently is that the price is a bit on the high side. It is also a bit crowded but I'm OK if I get my favorite corner table or sit in a booth in the bar.. I dine out to talk with my companion and like to be able to hear what is being said."

  • "Hadn't been there in a while and stopped in once and booked again within the week. Reliably good food, pleasant atmosphere, enjoyed a lot."

  • "Cesca is wonderful in every way for a dinner date. Great food and service and very cozy atmosphere. Love it!!!! Try the fried cauliflower sometime. Makes a fun starter to share with one or two of their wonderful cocktails."

  • "We had a delicious early dinner before going to the theater. My husband had a fish stew special dish that they offer on Friday nights. It was wonderful. All of the fish was fresh and well cooked, and the tomato based sauce was delicious and sweet. I had their trout dish which was also fresh and delicious with interesting tastes. Because the dinner was early we didn't get additional courses, but I would highly recommend the restaurant and would definitely go back. Prices weren't out of line for the quality of the food. It wasn't noisy when we were there because it was so early, but I can't comment on the noise level at a later hour."

  • "After three days enjoying the fast paced ,loud hustle and bustle of NYC , a cousin recommended Cesca's . What a beautiful, romantic soft place to fall at the end of the day !!! We felt like we were visiting a well appointed villa in Italy. Every detail was just right. We could actually have a quiet conversation and hear each other. Atmosphere gets an A+. Okay wine list, very good quality, delicious food.Diverse menu. If we lived in NYC this would be one of our routine stops !"

  • "We've been going to Cesca for years. Sadly, this is the third disappointing visit in a row. The menu has changed and is boring. The food is mediocre. Feh. We won't be returning."

  • "We were two couples and, although we all appreciated the food and service, we were all quite disturbed by the loud music. After complaining to our waiter, the music was lowered. But why subject your clientele to such loud, inappropriate music? People go to restaurants not only to dine, but also to have conversations in a pleasant, quiet atmosphere. If you HAVE TO have music (and personally we don't see any need for it), why not just have some unobtrusive, easy listening in the background?"

  • "This was my third time at 'cesca, and it was wonderful, as always. The decor and lighting is intimate, our waiter was great, and the food was imaginative and flavorful. I'm definitely looking forward to going back."

  • "Great unknown gem for Brunch. Very quiet but fabulous food. Must try the bread basket with the cheese torta and the polenta with eggs and bacon."

  • "Overall food was very good. Mussels were some of the best ever and pasta also very good. Grilled pork chop was delicious but veal chop lacked flavor. Sommelier was excellent and found us a very good wine at a reasonable price from a rather pricey wine list. Service was terrible. At each course something went wrong. Seating is comfortable and atmosphere very relaxing."

  • "Everything was outstanding from the time we arrived and were greated to when we finally paid the check and left. Godfrey was an excellent host and went out of his way to make our dining experience enjoyable. Michael our waiter, was charming, attentive, and very personable.."

  • "Even tho this upper west side restaurant resides in the basement, the decor is very comfortable and nicely appointed. The exposed kitchen - and I mean all if it from the dishwasher to the gas ranges - keeps the staff on their toes producing beautifully plated, delicious food. The salmon with capers and tomatoes had the best herb crusted crispy skin I've ever had. Definitely go!"

  • "Our only quibble is that they just raised their corkage charge from $25 to $30, which is a bit much for this type of restaurant."

  • "Went to this restaurant twice before the Allman Brothers at the Beacon loved both times. Will keep going."

  • "We had dinner prior to a concert at the Beacon. Everything was delicious but the scallops were probably the best I ever had. E e don't go to NY often but we will have dinner here again. The server was so very attentive without being pushy. Wine was refilled and dishes cleared right away but we never felt rushed. Overall a perfect meal."

  • "One of the best Italian restaurants in NYC! And my #1 choice for a great meal on the UWS."

  • "We had a great dinner. Our waiter Ian was amazing. We moved to bar after dinner where we were ignored but finally served one drink rudely so we left. We loved the food so we will come back just we won't stop at bar afterwards."

  • "Have been to Cesca numerous times, however food was extremely disappointing this trip. We had the squid ink pasta, which was almost inedible due to salt content and the pork chop, which was overcooked. Not likely to return, which is too bad since it's a nice spot and the service is very good."

  • "I come here at least once every (frequent) visit to NYC. Everything about it is really terrific. The food is extremely well prepared, thoughtful menu and well-conceived dishes, great staff attitude, and very easy-going and professional ambience. You know you are in a really good restaurant, without arrogance or pretensions. I've introduced a number of local and visitor friends to Cesca, and everyone loves it. Definitely worth going (way) out of your way to dine here."

  • "Food and service great. The hostess should be fired. Horrible first impression getting in the door. Had a reservation on Wed Feb 12 at 7.30."

  • "Great atmosphere, great service. Food is quite good; the primary downside was a weak selection of appetizers. A tad on the expensive side (dinner for two adults and a 13 year old was $240 before tip) but a just a block from the Beacon Theater."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Couldn't get a reservation on weekdays, so decided to go for lunch on Sunday. No problem getting a reservation for that. Unfortunately, the menu was Brunch with none of the regular menu items. That was disappointing. Everything we ordered was totally acceptable. Just way too limiting in choices. Next time, we'll hold out for lunch or dinner."

  • "'Cesca delivers the goods like no other in the immediate Beacon Theatre vicinity -- and possibly beyond. Spacious with myriad seating choices for parties of 4 / 6 / 8 / or more, it has both rare breadth and comfort so as to be as familiar as dining in your own home. Cozy and handsome bar adds to pre or post theatre activity -- and wonderful fare. Look forward to my next visit."

  • "Delicious food and beautiful, restaurant. Our only and unanimous critique is that they serve the red wine too cold."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "The atmosphere at Cesca is very comfortable along with being well appointed. Many varied table configurations allow for groups of any size from small and intimate for two as well as for large tables for friendly dining in large groups. Great, interesting and unusual appetizers. The fontina with roasted vegetables was fantastic. Good size portions seem to be the rule at Cesca. I would recommend this restaurant to all."

  • "I was very disappointed with brunch. I have had dinner here several times and have enjoyed it quite a bit but brunch was terrible! The waitstaff was friendly but seemingly very inexperienced and slow. The food flavor and presentation was poor. Had a chopped salad with salmon. Mostly big chunks of iceberg lettuce with a thin strip of grilled salmon plopped on top. My friend had a seasonal frittata which was dry and overcooked. The meals came with nothing....no bread unless you ordered a large, elaborate sweet-roll/muffin basket for an extra cost."
