A word from Centre Street Sanctuary
Located on the former site of the Blessed Sacrament Church Rectory, Sanctuary lends its namesake for those wishing to feel comfortable with the choices one makes in their dining experience without the worries of overspending. The ambiance is unique. Everywhere you look, you will see material sourced from old churches in Massachusetts, whether you are sitting at our bar constructed out of an old church door or sitting in our dining room in one of our upholstered church pews. Our menu is unique, too. Chef Christian Ellis has taken comfort food to another level. Our goal is for you to have something consciously sourced and familiar but never done quite like this. Choose from "In The Beginning" (appetizers,) "Selections" (a uniquely designed entre page,) or "Creations" (Chef Ellis" inspired dishes) while enjoying a glass of wine, beer, or uniquely designed cocktail. Our regulars come in for the food and stay for the service. Our team will make you feel right at home. All Are WelcomeContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "Delightful staff--from hostess to servers and a surprisingly delectable, affordable menu. The meatballs, greek salad, soy molasses wings, and kale were amazing!"

  • "Prices are a little high for the portions you get but the food was excellent. Everyone got a different dish at dinner and happily cleared their plates. There was bit of a mix up with our bill that took some time to sort out at the end but the staff was very helpful and apologetic. I will definitely go back when in the mood for upscale dining in JP."

  • "generous portions. Trying out live music did not work for us otherwise will return soon. The owner came over and greeted us which was very nice. Good luck!"

  • "Love this place and want to see it succeed! Located in the new development around the former Blessed Sacrament church, it feels good as soon as you walk in. The stained glass and bits of church furniture set a warm tone. It's a friendly place, with a well-chosen seasonal menu, wonderful dishes like the house-smoked duck breast, fish in potato crust, and dry aged beef. The service is just right -- a great bartender, and friendly wait staff the know when to help and when to let you take your time. There are off-the-menu specials that are worth asking about. My new "gotta take you there" place for friends and visitors."

  • "On a Sunday night of a holiday weekend, the place was pretty empty. I hope that was an anomaly, as it's a very comfortable, friendly place with good service and interesting food. Atmosphere is pub-like, with half the space in the bar area. But the menu is decidedly not pub food, despite the homemade potato chips you get to nibble on while you read the menu. I had the duck, which was quite tasty with the cranberry jus (although it was cooked a little unevenly--a tad underdone in the middle and a tad overdone on the edges) and it went well with the sweet potato puree. Would definitely try this place again."

  • "Food was fantastic, I can't wait to go back. Server was on point and super friendly. No parking available in lot but plenty of on-street parking."

  • "Friendly service, but a bit frazzled because it was Valentine's Day. Will have to go back on a quieter evening to get a real feel for the place."

  • "Great food. Great location. Great drink list. Hyde Square needed a gem like this and Sanctuary delivered!"

  • "We had previously had brunch here and liked it, so we thought we would try dinner. The food choices were interesting but not prepared well."

  • "Great edition to JP. Decent menu, great potato chips served instead of bread. Our server was great and really made our night."

  • "Needs a lot of atmosphere. The decor was not good and the walls a very drab color which brings down the mood of the place. The food was fairly good and the music was great."

  • "Made a reservation for NYE. Our waiter informed us it was his first night, and had been given our party of 12 along with three other tables. We sat down at 7:30 and did not leave until 10:30. Our server was sweet, but watching him flounder without assistance was painful. The food was tasty... When it came, and an understaffed bar took 30 mins to pour my beer. The place has potential, if they get their act together."

  • "Santuary is a great restaurant. I have eaten here 3 times and was more than happy with my entree each time. Last time I brought my Dad and he said it was the best short rib he'd ever had. I was initially skeptical because it always seemed pretty empty. I actually feel badly because I think this restaurant deserves more recognition and I think more people should visit it. The restaurant locale is a little more "over the tracks" so to speak in the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain. I think this is the reason that the socialites and foodies haven't heard of it, or haven't decided to go. The area is "up and coming". Anyway, quiet or not, it's definitely worth a visit. You won't be disappointed. Prices were reasonable, friendly, quick service."

  • "My husband and I were looking to go out to dinner for his birthday. Our two teenagers joined us. We were pleasantly surprised with Centre Street Sanctuary. It has a "hip" vibe and the entrees we selected were good. I had the salmon (delicious) and the rest had either Sirloin tips or the NY Strip (good pieces of meat). The only thing I would prefer is to have nice bread instead of chips placed on the table prior to dinner."

  • "Very good service. The place was hopping with a fun happy diverse crowd. Warm. Food was good, not great but above average. Some real comfort food. Prices are average. The noise level is high with happy conversation, so if you want a serious time to talk it over or gaze into each others eyes, then not for you."

  • "Went for a late dinner on a Saturday night. We were excioted about the additionto the neighborhood were hoping for good food, good wine and good conversation. We got none of those. The place wasn't very crowded but it was SO loud. There was nothing to dampen the sound. We could hardly hear ourselves talk. After about 5 minutes, we seriously considerred leaving but we decided we'd give the food a chance. It turned out to be quite average -- certainly no reason to return. The wine selection was really poor. I'm told brunch is good there. I think it'll be a while before we check it out."

  • "The food is really inconsistent. It's a great addition to neighborhood and staff are great. But they need to work on food. Things are way too salty - and I like salt. Even the kale was overly salty. And the fries too They could also use a few more things on the menu."

  • "Had an early dinner on Halloween when all of Jamaica Plain was buzzing with costumed families. We had "wild things" at the table next to us but the place was otherwise deserted. Service was attentive and friendly, seemed like a nice place to hang out. Very crisp not oily fish and chips, a large portion with a very garlic tartar sauce, and I enjoyed my perfectly cooked duck breast in a garlicky marinade with roasted brussels sprouts which were delicious. Nice selection of beers and a good wine list will make me try again. Did not stay for dessert. I would be willing to try again, especially since free parking in back makes getting there easy."

  • "The mushroom appetizer was delicious. We also got gnocchi with a squash sauce- the flavors were good but it was almost soup-like and not what we were expecting. We asked for some bread to sop up all of the extra sauce, and this seemed to create quite a challenge for our waiter, and apparently the kitchen. We were brought a grilled bread appetizer and charged 2 bucks. Oh well. The vegetarian choices were limited, and many of them felt like the same ingredients reorganized into different dishes, so it felt like even less of a choice. Great beer selection!"

  • "I took a group of 8 here for brunch and couldn't have had better service. Everything was very good and the waitress didnt even flinch when we sent her back to separate out the checks. Highly recommend."

  • "Needed a place to dine with our college son during Parent's Weekend and was pleased to find Centre St Sanctuary. Great selection of appetizers - and variety of entrees. The NY Strip steak was wonderful - better than at some famous steak houses and the grilled Salmon was wonderful. Huge selection of beers and cocktails adds to the experience. Prices were reasonable across the board so it was a great night out."
