A word from Centre Street Sanctuary
Located on the former site of the Blessed Sacrament Church Rectory, Sanctuary lends its namesake for those wishing to feel comfortable with the choices one makes in their dining experience without the worries of overspending.
The ambiance is unique. Everywhere you look, you will see material sourced from old churches in Massachusetts, whether you are sitting at our bar constructed out of an old church door or sitting in our dining room in one of our upholstered church pews. Our menu is unique, too. We have taken comfort food to another level. Our goal is for you to have something consciously sourced and familiar but never done quite like this. Choose from "In The Beginning" (appetizers,) "Selections" (a uniquely designed entre page,) or "Creations" (inspired dishes) while enjoying a glass of wine, beer, or uniquely designed cocktail. Our regulars come in for the food and stay for the service. Our team will make you feel right at home. All Are Welcome

We loved the peaceful atmosphere, the church pews and decorations were fun (and comfortable to sti on) and the salmon dish, the duck and cod dishes were all quite tasteful and beautifully arranged. The chocolate dessert was amazing!! Thursday was live music night, which added to the enjoyment. A wonderful place for a meal.

Centre Street Sanctuary is a good place to meet a group a friends. We were one of only a few groups there on a Sunday evening. They have a good wine and beer selection and at least for us, it was nice and quiet. The food and service are only ok - the bacon on my gluttony burger was chewy and the fries that came with everything were standard, nothing special. My fiancee got fish and chips, and they did not stand out.

Our waitress was just the right amount of attentive. We had a surprisingly cozy atmosphere though only separated by screens from busy Centre Street. I would order the cheese croquettes with horseradish and the sweet pea risotto again in a heart beat. Hope to find an excuse to get back there soon!

Music a bit too loud inside, But from outside patio area, the blues guitar sounded great, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal watching the urban view and passers by from the small summer outdoor area. Very good food and eclectic and savory for the second time we have been here.

Outdoor patio lacked ambience and the food portions were really small for the price of the entree. I ordered the salmon and my friend ordered the duck and we both thought the entrees were just ok. I would not recommend the restaurant.

A good way to judge a restaurant is on its burger, and my boyfriend said it was one of the best burgers he's had. I tried it and everything but the meat was delicious; it was bland/under-flavored. I ordered the fish special and it was just what I hoped: tasty, perfectly cooked salmon, over a bed of garlicky spinach and potatoes. Our server let us try the vinho verde before we ordered it. Wine list was NOT just your usual pinot gris and savignon. They def have some more interesting wines. The creme brulee was unfortunately the worst I've had. The burnt sugar crust was over burnt. The rest was thick and chewy...yuck. I was honest and our server took it off the bill. Great bar with a beautiful stained glass window. Will probably return again!

I hadn't heard much about this place prior to going, but I drive by it all the time. I was so glad we went! The menu was great and our server (Amy, I believe) was super friendly and had a great spark. The "our daily bread" app was a bit too garlicky for my taste but the meatballs were uh-mazing. If I had one criticism (and this certainly would not prevent me from going back), it would be that we had about 5 minutes between receiving our appetizers and our meals... not enough time to eat without something going cold. We were also there on trivia night, which sounded really fun although made it difficult for those not participating to talk without yelling.

I was lucky enough to receive a gift card to this really great place. I'd never heard of it and am always interested in trying new places. I absolutely loved it! Right from the get-go they served irresistible home made potato chips. The berry salad was amazing! Its now one of my most favorite salads ever! The ravioli was wonderful as well; I was able to save half of it to have for lunch the next day. I got two delicious meals out of it and couldn't have been happier! The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The nice & competent staff along with the beautiful décor made for a wonderful dinning experience. I am looking forward to returning and bringing friends & family.

We were greeted by a very cheerful host who offered us either inside dining or a table on the patio. We opted for the inside as it was 94 degrees outside and the had the air conditioning set perfect . We started bout with the fried mac and cheese it was served in a very tasty marinara, I forgot when we were first set ed the brought out homemade potato chips and bean dip bother the appetizers were delightful. For my entrée I had steak tips and mashed potatoes. The tips where marinated in a bourbon based glazed. The meat was so tender it melted in your mouth. For dessert I had the creme Brule delicious. This was by far one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time.

I found this place by chance just doing a search on open table for restaurants in JP - we couldn't have been happier! In fact, I was so happy I can back for dinner the next night! Made a reservation the first night (Friday) but was able to walk in Saturday night just after 8:30 & was seated immediately. We recently celebrated my daughter's graduation from college at the Center Street Sanctuary, and I can comfortably say that I've never enjoyed such attentive service at any restaurant, ever. The staff bent over backwards to meet our every need, and made sure that our dinner was a special one. The food, too, was wonderful ... hearty and delicious, and very reasonably priced. We had fun with the dueling cheese app, and I made a meal of the PEI mussels and stacked vegetable tart. Everyone else loved their meals! About the only downside was the noise level ... while the staff turned it down a little for us, once the musician for the afternoon arrived at the bar side, it got a little noisy. Overall, though, I'd highly recommend it.

We were excited to dine here for Mother's Day! We arrived and were seated almost immediately which was a plus however our waiter was unfriendly, took forever to take our order. There were other staff just walking around that could have assisted. He took our orders maybe a half an hour after we had been seated, our food then took another 45 minutes to an hour, not once did he apologize for the delay or check in on us. The meals were brought out one by one, and by the time the last meal had been brought out everyone was pretty much done. The manager brought the last meal out with two pieces of fish, and came back to the table 10 minutes later with a third piece how unprofessional. I could go on about the awful service not enough characters.

Food was good, but very very average with surprisingly small portions. Service was fair at best - never offered to refill waters or brink a drink for our toddler in a highchair, when we asked for "one more minute" to look at the menu we got 15, one of our meals was missing 1/2 the ingredients that were listed on the menu, and the waitress was generally very slow and not attentive (until it was time to run the credit card). And - as silly as it sounds - no one ever wished my wife a Happy Mother's Day! With so many other options in the area, we probably will not be back.

Love this place and want to see it succeed! Located in the new development around the former Blessed Sacrament church, it feels good as soon as you walk in. The stained glass and bits of church furniture set a warm tone. It's a friendly place, with a well-chosen seasonal menu, wonderful dishes like the house-smoked duck breast, fish in potato crust, and dry aged beef. The service is just right -- a great bartender, and friendly wait staff the know when to help and when to let you take your time. There are off-the-menu specials that are worth asking about. My new "gotta take you there" place for friends and visitors.

On a Sunday night of a holiday weekend, the place was pretty empty. I hope that was an anomaly, as it's a very comfortable, friendly place with good service and interesting food. Atmosphere is pub-like, with half the space in the bar area. But the menu is decidedly not pub food, despite the homemade potato chips you get to nibble on while you read the menu. I had the duck, which was quite tasty with the cranberry jus (although it was cooked a little unevenly--a tad underdone in the middle and a tad overdone on the edges) and it went well with the sweet potato puree. Would definitely try this place again.

Made a reservation for NYE. Our waiter informed us it was his first night, and had been given our party of 12 along with three other tables. We sat down at 7:30 and did not leave until 10:30. Our server was sweet, but watching him flounder without assistance was painful. The food was tasty... When it came, and an understaffed bar took 30 mins to pour my beer. The place has potential, if they get their act together.

Santuary is a great restaurant. I have eaten here 3 times and was more than happy with my entree each time. Last time I brought my Dad and he said it was the best short rib he'd ever had. I was initially skeptical because it always seemed pretty empty. I actually feel badly because I think this restaurant deserves more recognition and I think more people should visit it. The restaurant locale is a little more "over the tracks" so to speak in the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain. I think this is the reason that the socialites and foodies haven't heard of it, or haven't decided to go. The area is "up and coming". Anyway, quiet or not, it's definitely worth a visit. You won't be disappointed. Prices were reasonable, friendly, quick service.

Went for a late dinner on a Saturday night. We were excioted about the additionto the neighborhood were hoping for good food, good wine and good conversation. We got none of those. The place wasn't very crowded but it was SO loud. There was nothing to dampen the sound. We could hardly hear ourselves talk. After about 5 minutes, we seriously considerred leaving but we decided we'd give the food a chance. It turned out to be quite average -- certainly no reason to return. The wine selection was really poor. I'm told brunch is good there. I think it'll be a while before we check it out.
