Diner Reviews
  • "Central has become a "hit or miss" establishment. Overall, the atmosphere of the restaurant is generally good and the service is typically very good...but the food is not consistent. Two out of the three entrees from out party were okay; however, the third was unedible. It seems like there must be a sous chef on site that like to be heavy handed with salt. For those of us who must watch the salt intake, that can be a problem. The final food prep person should check those things befor food leaves the kitchen."

  • "We had one if not the best dining experience ever Friday night. We ordered the Amberjack and the Whole Snapper entree's and they were fabulous. I think it was the first time Chef Leo offered WHOLE Snapper and if you are ever there and this dish is on the menu stop and order it before it is gone. We also went there Saturday for the Beer tasting, shine sipping and BBQ whole pig. We had the greatest time and everything was so well planned out. It felt like we were at a giant family gathering, so much fun!!"

  • "The Black-eyed Pea hummus and flatbread was an outstanding appetizer - and a great bargain, too. Andrea loved her duck, and my amberjack was very good. It could have been cooked just a bit less."

  • "Took my mother out for lunch and it was wonderful! Montgomery doesn't have much to offer, but I would recommend this place any day! The food is moderately priced, but well worth every penny. The waiters and waitresses are polite and courteous. The food was well prepared and delicious. One thing I didn't expect though was a bit too much herb in the shrimp and grits (but that's okay, it was still delicious). The dessert was scrumptious, although the creme brûlée should have been warm. I'd give it five stars for Montgomery!"

  • "Central is a sophisticated yet unpretentious restaurant in downtown Montgomery near the Entertainment district. The food is amazing and the atmosphere perfect. From appetizers to desserts, it is all excellent and you will not be disappointed in your experience. Has to be the best restaurant in Montgomery."

  • "Our group of 10 loved the overall dining experience! The exposed brick, soaring ceilings, chandeliers, wood floors made for great ambiance! The service was spectacular and the food was scrumptious!"

  • "We had an amazing dining experience. The menu is so varied and luscious, but our server Jenny helped guide us to make the best choices. She was so fun and energetic. If you are in Montgomery and want a great meal in a unique atmosphere, Central is the place to visit. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "We were visiting from out of town and always like to try a local nonchain restaurant. This is nestled downtown near the river and was great! From the very cool decor in the restored warehouse, to the charming staff, to the interesting menu selections and the excellent food......we had a wonderful dinner! And then walked to the river park and enjoyed spending a small time downtown and getting a taste of Montgomery. We will definitely go here again if we are passing through again."

  • "So as the title states this was my first time going. We went for dinner and it was delicious but I was sold before I ate a bite. The ambience is phenomenal! It was elegant yet rustic all at the same time."

  • "Good food, imaginatively prepared, with departures from the common American fare, simply and attractively served. Low-key ambiance. Much flair in the cooking, none in the serving. Servers friendly, efficient and attentive. Valet parking"

  • "My wife and I had been looking for a new restaurant, something with ambience and style, as well as great food, of course. Central supplied all of that, plus a great staff! We had an enjoyable evening, and as first-timers there we were treated to a history of the building. We highly recommend."

  • "From ambience to food, our visit here was unforgettable. Although parking was a beast due to a concert in the local vicinity, the experience made up for it. The staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, fast yet attentive. We added a child to our reservation and the restaurant was more than accommodating. I highly recommend the pimento cheese spread for an appetizer....YUMMY!"

  • "The entire experience at Central was excellent. We met the chef as we walked in who was very genuine and hospitable. The bar service prior to our reservation was excellent. The entire plane is beautiful, rustic, and very classy. The meal was outstanding as was the server. We both had the salad wedge as an appetizer and the brined/smoked pork chops with snap peas and carrots. Delicious! Central is now on my rotation when traveling through Montgomery. I highly now recommend Central to anyone living in or passing through Montgomery!"

  • "My wife and I went to Central for an anniversary dinner. Everything was great. First of all, the location in Montgomery's Alley district is good, as the restaurant is close to some other interesting spots. The restaurant is in an old warehouse, and they've done a good job with the interior design. As for the meal itself, the server was attentive and made some good suggestions. The food was all very good--I particularly liked the duck wontons appetizer and the duck quarters entree. To top it all off, the server brought us complimentary champagne when we told her it was our anniversary. I'll definitely be back."

  • "One of the best fine dining experiences my husband and I have encountered in the Montgomery area! We will definitely visit Central again. It's our new favorite!"

  • "Has very nice decor and an open kitchen. Service was quick and attentive. The menu had a good assortment of options with additional seasonal fare. We started with the Fried Green Tomato stack. It had a peppery breading and the it was soft on the edges, but had firmness in the middle. The queso fresco was a nice touch and added some salty tang. The buttermilk sauce had a hint of citrus, that paired well. My wife had the Buttermilk brined fried chicken. It was cooked perfectly and moist. I had the Smoke and Cured Pork chop topped with granny smith and red onion slaw. The chop was also cooked nicely and reminded me of ham. The sides for both dishes were good and fit the dish. We ended with the Banana's Foster Bread pudding which was also good."

  • "Our first time at Central was in March for our Anniversary and was so pleased that we wanted to share it with our Son on his visit home. It was a wonderful experience the second time around. If you want to impress a guest I would surly take them to Central!!! "

  • "This was our first date night since our second child and it was perfect. Server was prompt and knowledgeable but didn't hover. She told us a little history on the building that was really interesting. The food was impeccable, great presentation and delicious. The owner was walking around greeting the guests, which made you feel like he was really involved in making sure everything was just right. And it was!"

  • "When I placed my reservation I asked for a good table and I mentioned that it was my wife's birthday. I was so impressed that the lady that seated us and everyone else in the restaurant commented about my wife's birthday. It was very nice. The service was wonderful and the food was great. We really had a good time. I was so pleased that the internet reservation went so well and they had valet parking. Just a nice birthday evening with my wife...."

  • "Our experience at central was absolutely amazing. Chef leo really has a menu like no other. Although it was very very nice , it was not stuffy at all. Our server, marvin, had great knowledge of the menu. The wine presentation was spectacular. I would recommend central to anyone who is looking for a great dining experience! ! "

  • "Central is an unusual find for a city like Montgomery, AL. Fined dining in a reclaimed/restored building in a a sleepy Southern state capital. Let's hear it for benign neglect! We started with drinks, a Manhattan for me and a glass of Mahua White Zinfandel for my wife, followed by the calamari and black-eyed pea hummus. For the main course, I had the meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes and haricot vert. My wife had the shrimp and grits. We had the bananas Foster bread pudding for dessert (comp'd, because it was our anniversary). The staff was friendly and outgoing, offering suggestions as asked, even pointing out the free dessert for our anniversary. I highly recommend Central."

  • "Quality and quantity of food did not meet expections nor price. Gouda grits were gummy, not hot and not inspired. Chicken with rice was just ordinary and I found myself hungry shortly thereafter. Drinks were good if pricy. The meatloaf was very good and the tamal dish tasty. Bread pudding was so-so but too dry and lacked punch. Overall, I and my guest found food was not up to price nor hype. I've had lots better in Montgomery."

  • "Central offers a rare brunch on special occasions. We went on Mother's Day and enjoyed it tremendously. Chef put on a very nice spread of artisan salad items and the main course selections were a mix of the classic (prime rib) and regional specialties (shrimp and grits). All very nicely crafted. Central is our "go-to" chef-driven restaurant in Montgomery. Dining there is always a pleasant experience."

  • "We typically love central but they really had an off night this past Saturday (May 10). The food was just okay and often missed the mark. The menu was definitely not in line with what was delivered to the table. It was close, but there were enough misses to make the experience feel sloppy and underrated. Our server wasn't having the best night either. Kind of despondent , never anticipating and not thrilled to be working a Saturday night. At 350 dollars for 3 adults and two kids that split an entree.....I think we'll start looking around a bit more before venturing out to central again. Love the restaurant, bad night for them. "

  • "We had two sparkling wines at the bar waiting on our seats: Italian and champagne. We got out seats earlier than reserved. The food is excellent."

  • "We have been to Central a few times and enjoyed the food, so decided to go this time for our 35th wedding anniversary. It was very busy and noisy, though, this time due to several large groups. And I had noted our anniversary occasion when making the reservation, but there was no acknowledgement of this by either the waiter or receptionist. It also would have been nice if the waiter had offered bread when he brought our initial wine and/ or soup. The mushroom soup was very good and the Ricotta Dumplings were excellent. I had the meatloaf primarily based on a friend's earlier raves about it; it was good, but the spicy sauce and heavy amount of mashed potatoes is not for everyone. The dessert choices are great!"

  • "Space is great (old grocery). Cocktails fabulous. Ordered wood fired vegetables as a side - they were sautéed green beans with what appeared to be canned mushrooms on them - not wood fired as expected. Our seating area was cold with air blowing on us so we had to move around table to other side. Waiter stopped pouring our bottle of champagne after 2 pours so we had to finish it. He seemed to lose interest in our table when we were not ordering dessert. Just passing through but many locals there."

  • "We are not from the Montgomery area, my wife found Central on trip advisor and we were lucky she did. The location was good for walking distance from our hotel which was nice since there was light rain that night. The service was very good and Jeremy was knowledgeable about the wines and the menu . The dinner specials were both outstanding....fresh Halibut and Elk chops, both of which were cooked perfectly. We will go back whenever we are in town."

  • "As frequent travelers, my wife and I seek out local dining options. Central was well worth the visit. For lovers of Pimento Cheese, Central's is a must - quite possibly the best we have ever tasted! The Mushroom Bisque was full of flavor, as was the open-faced Meatloaf. As good ole Southerners though, I can tell you the Collard Greens are award-winning. Our server, Christine, made our experience complete. If your travels take you to Montgomery, make sure to have lunch or dinner at Central - you will be very satisfied!"

  • "food was most inconsistent. my filet was extremely tender but without much flavor. my spouse's pork chop was not possible to eat - extremely salty and dry. it was replaced by the snapper which was outstandingly good! the bread pudding was poor, nothing as good as bread pudding at Ruth Chris in B'ham a few nights later. service was very good and attentive. "
