A word from Central Park BoatHouse
With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Tasteless food. Bored server - not at all friendly. Very loud people on either side of me. Not the nice experiance I had 4 years ago. Terrible disappointment and waste of money."

  • "The setting is of course a gem…and the food is great, the service is great. If you happen to be there on one of the nights when the fireworks happen, well that is just an added reason to celebrate. And if you also happen to get a table by the water…well, your luck is doubled. I'll be back for more FUN!"

  • "Food was average at best w/ some of the highest prices in the city. Go for the view & a cocktail but be prepared to be underwhelmed if you order food. Rack of lamb ($46) was overcooked & potatoes that came with it were undercooked & raw. Gato & Rafele were FAR superior & food was cheaper & EXCEPTIONAL!!!"

  • "What a gem of a find in Central Park. We are from Sydney Australia, and so are spoilt for great outdoor eating venues. Central Park Boathouse was certainly up there. Great views across the lake to the city backdrop. Food was great too, and although not a place you might afford to eat every week, it was actually good value for the food you got. We will definitely go back."

  • "This past week we had lunch at the Biathouse, we checked the dress code online and saw 'business casual'. We dressed in skirts and tops. I know that there is both the cafeteria and the restaurant, we expected that the dress code would be more relaxed in the cafeteria. However we were a bit disappointed with the dress code in the restaurant as the ambiance is lovely for a more formal environment, we were surprised to see diners in jeans shorts and running gear. The food was outstanding- the dress code given the setting was a lot more casual than we expected."

  • "We were there to eat lunch to celebrate our 15th weddingday. It was perfect! Littlebit touristic but that we expected and was no surprice. The food was great and the service nice. We sat outside and the view was romantic!"

  • "Loeb Boathouse is a goregoeus romantic gem in the middle of Central Park. Views are amazing, both day and night. This was my second time dining at this restaurant and will definitely go again. We were there with my children, ages 5,12,14 and they loved it, but take in consideration that it is a good option for children who enjoy great food and who love going out to different restaurants and know how to be sitting, as this is a beautiful setting where people go to enjoy a nice dinner. Both times we witnessed a proposal, so that was very nice. The lake makes it a magical experience in the middle of one of the most visited city parks."

  • "Arrived during a violent thunderstorm.Despite the fact that the place was 3/4 empty we were haughtily told we couldn't sit until all of our party was together and would lose our reservation if they were 15 minutes late. Maybe necessary for a busy night, but not during bad weather when you knew there would be many cancellations. The service continued to be lacksidaisical throughout, more what I would expect in a Catskill summer camp. Our waitress was inattentive and preoccupied. The food, however, was spot on, and although not a place you go for the food, everything was quite up to par and I must say , I can't remember having had a better crabcake. Tip was added on, which explains the poor service."

  • "Nice location, but during hot summers also first row should be in the shade. Summer is very much appreciated, then it is the place to be, however, it is impossible to dine in full sun."

  • "I made a reservation for my daughter and I. We first rented bikes and then arrived for our lunch. The waiter, was cordial, but seeing that we were not ordering alcoholic beverages, to boost up our bill, was not very accommodating. There they automatically add 15% gratuity. It took forever to get bread, and only one slice. My daughter ordered lemonade but it didn't come until the end of the meal, when we had requested it multiple times. The food was fair, I had a vegetarian dish consisting of tofu and mushrooms and sautéed spinach . My daughter had salmon. Nothing to wow us. We skipped dessert. The menu is very limited. The best part is the ambience and the view of the lake. You're probably better off eating at the cafe for lunch."

  • "If you are looking for a relaxing, elegant, fun place for a great meal or special occasion The Boathouse is the place. The views are spectactular and you feel as if you are sitting in the middle of a large retreat, not in a city while listening to the birds and watching the sunset over the pond. We never felt rushed and brought our 13 year old grandaughter for her birthday which the staff made to feel special. At the last minute I had to move our reservations out some and The Boathouse was most accommodating. We will defineately come again on our next trip to NYC."

  • "My fiancé was really excited about the Boathouse as she's a massive Sex in the City fan. It's a stunning location but unless you're right on the balcony you can't fully appreciate it. If you're on a romantic date, be sure to ask for a booth or at least the booth like tables for two that are a couple of rows back. We were sat that close to a lady who was telling her friend everything about her upcoming surgery I reckon I could do the procedure myself! Food was good. Service, slow 'n' sweaty (It was a hot New York day) understaffed I imagine. Overall it was okay. I would go back for my Grandmother's 80th birthday but not for a date, romantic dinner, proposal spot or even for 4 friends catching up to talk about sex in the city..."

  • "The right place to be during torrential rain: inside the Boathouse looking over the pond. Our table loved the crab-cake opener, fell asleep trying to eat the arugula salad, and enjoyed the halibut and swordfish entrees. Desserts weren't exceptional, unless you happen to love sweetened bananas (given the caramel treatment in a 'tarte Tatin'). Cheapest bottle was $55. The staff was cheerful and attentive, but the real stunner was finding an undisclosed tip attached to our bill -- we were only four, not 'six or more.'"

  • "We had supper at thei Boathouse during a downpour, so the windows to the lake were closed and it was so noisy we had to raise our voices to converse. I was serve limp prociutto blanketed over a square block of (not so) fresh mozzerella and basil cream. Our fresh cherry tomato pasta with fresh basil leaves was instead a thick, cooked down sauce with a few slivers of basil, undetectable in the flavor. We had to ask and wait for a fork after the entrees were served. The ladies room was agag with sewer gas. Not kidding here. The poor woman, hired to stand there collecting tips for I don't know what, told me that the management was aware of it. If you don't have a table nect to the lake in nice weather you don't have anything at the Boathouse."

  • "We arrived and it was noisy and not at all "dressy." It was loud and kids were everywhere. We sat right away. However, no one came to our table for 15 minutes, not even a hello or I'll be right with you. The glasses on the table were dirty and water stained. The arugula salad was a plate of arugula and three slices of a roasted strawberry. Our server didn't check on us once. The runner brought our entrees before our plates were cleared and had to go back to the kitchen. Entrees were a disaster. I took one bite of tuna tartare and pulled plastic out of my mouth, which turned out to be a fish scale. We finally got some attention and then paid the check with gratuity already added. Which I believe is illegal in NY. Overall bad experience."

  • "Myself and partner had a lovely dining experience at The Boathouse. We made a reservation, but were nearly 20 mins late. The Maître D kindly still accommodated us and had another table for us in less than 10 mins. She was extremely organised and professional. The overall ambience of the restaurant is very relaxed & serene despite every table being occupied and the restaurant being extremely busy the whole time we were there. There was no pressure to finish your meal and have the table back by a certain time. Our food was amazing, everything tasted great. We will be returning the next time we vist NYC."

  • "A party of three New Zealanders traveling with our 20 year old son. Great food & wine and wow what a spot we were lucky to get a lake side table on the beautiful lake front well worth the journey and worth pre booking from NZ ... Would we go again ? Yes in a NY heart beat ."

  • "Terrible wait-time and honoring our requests(8:30 reservation). After waiting for more than 1/2 hr,we were then refused a table by the water which we requested and repeatedly reminded the maitre-d who always agreed. After 9, when our party of 5 was getting cranky and hungry, we again asked to be seated. We agreed to a back table because it was getting late. About 2 minutes after we were seated (we hadn't even looked at the menus), people left a lake-side table. We stood up because we thought we were to be moved to that table. The maitre-d refused and said it was for another party. We also refused to move so he finally agreed to let us have the table. This was a terrible experience. The Boathouse has to get their priorities straight."

  • "This was our 32nd wedding anniversary and I would say everything was suburb!! The service was perfect food out of this world and truly a great great place. The swordfish was outstanding and the wine list was very broad and appealing to all tastes. The hostess was exceptionally friendly and took the time to chat with me and wish me the best."

  • "Just lovely setting Food was good but nothing great. Chocolate cake was dry but the chocolate gelato was delicious. The heirloom tomato salad was yummy but the pretzel stick bread was stale. Swordfish and Branzino were good. Beef was ok. Big problem it is very dark outside if you are walking to the bus at night and one can easily trip as my sister almost did if I wasn't holding onto her. NEED LIGHTS."

  • "We were a family group of 4 members. We got a great table next to lake with outstanding view. Everything was very good, starting from the lady guiding us to table and our waitress serving. Thank you very much! Lobster as main course was very good!"

  • "the description of the ingridients should mucah easier to be understood. additional, I'd would say, as NYC is melting pot, with turist all over the world, a menu written in spanish or portuguese, it gives a certain touch of CRM so important nowadays."

  • "First of all, the hostess was extremely rude. We arrived a couple minutes before it opened so we stood and waited. She didn't tell us to form a line or warn us how long the line would be, so we waited another 15 minutes when we realized she had told others to form a line. It seemed as if we were the first there, and last to be seated. made the reservation close to a week in advanced and got sat at a table with a view of a pole. They sat people with no reservations in the best tables with the best views. The waitress was fine, and the food was decent but overall it was a disappointment."

  • "The hostesses were not friendly at all and very unwelcoming. As our first point of contact, we were not impressed and a bit disappointed. While being sat, the hostess had an argument with the busboy, saying "I'm gonna kill you" as he poured our water. Nice.. Our server was good, food was delicious, ambience unsurpassed. However, when our server dropped the check, he added gratuity to our bill!? A party of four??? I was once again disappointed. I understand adding gratuity to large parties, but not to a party of four. He was trying to secure a tip which made me feel cheap; his tip would have been better had he not added it. We ate at a lot of wonderful places while in NYC, not sure if The Boathouse will make my list of recommendations"

  • "Undoubtedly a nice and romantic lake-side setting. But that's about it on the plus side. The food is at best average. Not bad, but rather tasteless and uninspiring. The white aspargus salad contained consisted mainly of ruccola salad and I couldn't find more than traces of aspargus. The rest of the dishes equally disappointing. - The restaurant claims to uphold some sort of dress-code. They don't. As long as you wear at least shorts and a t-shirt, you won't feel under-dressed. - General impression is that the BoatHouse is a classical tourist trap. If you still want to go there (the setting is indeed great), skip the dinner and settle with a drink in the bar. That'll give you a better chance to leave with a smile on your face."

  • "Made reservations (and good thing we did!) and were immediately taken to our table at our reserved time. There was a LONG line of people waiting to get in but did not make reservations, so I was concerned that would be late getting us in. Food was excellent, waiter was very personable and extremely attentive to our needs, view was spectacular...overall great experience. Highly recommend."
