I have read the reviews of others on the site and disagree with the comments of bad service and mediocre food. We had a wonderful lake-side table. Our waiter was helpful and friendly. I have been at the restaurant for brunch and I agree that the delay in seating can be upsetting. However, the idea is to be egalitarian about the lake-side tables. I expected mediocre food with a great view. That being said, the food was excellent. The heirloom tomato salad tasted like they had just picked the tomatoes that day, and my vegetarian entree' was exquisite. My friend's grilled scallops were great as well. The service was wonderful in every aspect, and of course the view of the lake with the building in the background is amazing. The bar was crazy busy though and the bartender was brusque - he was very busy and perhaps he felt he hadn't time to chit-chat, but was short to the point of rudeness with me when I was being friendly.

Service was outstanding and the view, even though a rainy day, was magnificent, sitting in the midst of Central Park and surrounded by water and lovely grounds, makes for an exceptional experience.Only complaint was that people should be made aware that you have to walk into the grounds and down to the restaurant (certainly not far, only 5 minutes) but if you're not aware of this and it's pouring rain (like it was for us) you will at least be sure to bring an umbrella. While we've learned to ask the price of specials, especially veal chops, we didn't think to also ask the price of the mixed drinks. We paid $18.00 for a Grey Goose vodka gimlet.

We went on a Monday so we were more likely to get a table by the water. We sat at our table (luckily right on the water) and the scenery of Central Park, the white linen tables and the beautiful meal were well worth it. It's no more expensive than any other good restaurant in NYC. Everything we had was wonderful!! The food was very well done and I have to say I am already excited to go back and eat there again! Amazing venue, watching the sunset over Manhattan was stunning. Food was great, I particularly loved the Duck Breast special entrée served with roasted nectarines. Tip - don't expect a late night on a week night. We went on a Wednesday and were the last people there at 10.30. The setting can't be beat -- the water from the rowboat lake laps at your feet, the trees are a lovely green, and the buildings at the edge of the park frame a gorgeous view. We watched rowers having a good time and a gondola escorting groups out on mini-excursions. The restaurant is open air if possible, but huge glass windows are used when it's too chilly or windy. The food was delicious and the service efficient and helpful. Make an afternoon visit to the boat pond with the model sailboats, stroll a short distance to the Boathouse, enjoy your dinner, and stroll back through the park. I had the special marinated shrimp & cream grits (although I'm not that fond of grits, it was good) . Another guest had Roasted Amish Chicken.
