Seating by the window is definitely better although we've been seated away and the food and service makes up for missing the view of the water. The food is always remarkable -- we've enjoyed the steak in the past but this time I had a phenomenal swordfish steak and my husband's lamb was so good that I even liked the bite he gave me! We reserved a table before we left the UK - which I would recommend as the restaurant was busy. The staff were very attentive and could not be faulted in any way. The food, crab cake starter and monkfish main for my partner and scallopes starter with swordfish main for myself were beautiful and left both of us wanting more! The ambiance of the place was very special although we were not lucky enough for a waterfront table - this had no effect at all on the evening, so much so my partner proposed! The celebrated ambience reminds me of a country club. It is open and bright, open to the glorious view. Although the window seats are prized, there really is not a bad table in the place, including the bar. The food is astonishingly good. A place of this visual and ambient appeal would not really have to have superior food. They could get away with much less and still pull in the tourists. But they do not rest on any laurels. The menu is beautifully conceived and executed. It will be difficult to match such an exclusive location in NY City. In spite of the enormous success of this restaurant it is a real pleasure to see that the maitre D and his staff show no sign of wear and create both a professional and friendly atmosphere.The food is relatively simple, but of great quality.

Elegant but unpretentious, and mercifully quiet enough (on a Monday night anyway) for conversation. No TV's in the dining area, yay. Food was good but not roll-your-eyes-in-ecstasy good. My only one comment would be that where I was seated there was a large group bheindus and their table/chairs were close to my chair. This meant that the waiter was having problems waiting the large table and this meant that each time he was giving out food to the large group I had to stand up and move away from my chair otherwise he kept knocking into me.
