A word from Central Park BoatHouse
With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I always know Tavern on the Green but I didnt know theres another jewel restrurant inside central park. Love the atmosphere very quite and pleasant place to dine. Great view. Host was great. Went in 45 minutes early and was told we have to wait no problem, we went to the bar next door. 20 minutes later host find us with so many people and let us know our table was ready. Great gesture. Food is very good. Just don't order the cookies for desert. 8 small cookies for 9 bucks was alittle like burning money. Overall great night. The only downer was the check - expensive..."

  • "Beautiful night. Great ambiance. Average Wait staff. Marginal food selections. We wanted to love everything about this well known landmark... However, the Park being closed to all vehicles in the evening made an inconvenient walk for anyone with mobility issues. The food was good... But we were wishing for a little more diversity. It was a busy Saturday night...So our waiter was understandably preoccupied. Maybe it was our fault for having too high of expectations."

  • "I've been here several times and service was a hallmark, until this visit. Food, ambience, view incredible. I will come back."

  • "Location and view can't be beat. Food quite good. But reception and wait staff way below par. The mark of a tourist trap, which this place does not need to be Dismissive, almost rude hostess and glacially slow, inattentive wait staff. A shame really. Could be one of the best restaurants in town if they tried a bit harder."

  • "To sit by the window watching rowers on the pond is a fantastic experience. The sheer visual beauty of the scene is the best part. Crab cakes were very good, also cappuccino and we watched turtles swimming with their necks stretched up and a gondola poling by. I felt transported to Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party."

  • "The view is one of my favorites in Manhattan. It is what makes this restaurant unique."

  • "We had a 2PM booking and arrived at 1:45, we were sent to the bar. We were not seated till 2:30PM. The hostess was rude and kept telling people to be quiet and stay in line. I had a flight to catch and very nearly walked out. There was a line back out into the cafe including people with reservations and those trying to make reservations. The people without reservations should have to line elsewhere as it caused confusion and several groups to walk out while we were waiting. Tables sat empty while the hostess tried to work out who should go where, not a difficult task. Very disappointing start but the food was pretty good. Take tourists but patient ones."

  • "Scenic, full professional wait staff, great food. We arrived 30 min earlier than expected, they were unable to seat us early, we were seat 15 min past reservation...but, a very comfortable wait area by a nice bar, w pretty scenery made it seem quicker"

  • "Great lunch spot with a view food was good! Wine list was great! Best New York restaurant for lunch."

  • "We prebooked a table and were lucky to have one of the nicest in the restaurant. The service was excellent. We had water and bread right away, and a very nice female waiter. The food on the other hand...I decided on todays special, which was lobster ($38). It was like having lobster at McDonalds. The lobster was spread on a sausage bun which you buy in any groceriestore. Served with a big pile of chips and ketchup in a papercup.(like at McDonalds) There was a tiny bit of cabbage/carrot shred on the side. Actually it was terrible. My sisters chicken was ok, but the cold potato on the side didn't match the warm(dry) chicken. I understand that people go there because of the atmosphere and the location, but it can't be because of the food."

  • "Our lunch at the Boat House was spectacular from the food to the ambiance. We decided that the next time we will make a later reservation (perhaps 3:30 ish and then go to the theatre and then out for dessert afterward! It's a great place to go if you are doing the museums in upper Manhattan."

  • "Literally, The Boathouse has been used as a backdrop for films and print for many years. The ambience can not be beat, the crab cake is to die for, and the people watching is second to none. Take a boat out & row on the Lake. I return to this place every time I come to New York & it never disappoints. Enjoy!"

  • "The best food here is the brunch - dinner is very mediocre, but the restaurant has a great ambiance."

  • "We came early, but got a place at the bar for a bear - which tasted execellente after walking through Central Park in the heath. The food was very good, and the view over the lake is very charming."

  • "I had low expectations, since I knew this was a tourist place and I'm a typical New Yorker-foodie. But the food was not bad, and the portions were large. My main course (halibut special) was a little cold. Service was attentive enough, and better than I expected for a place that adds the gratuity automatically. We were there with out-of-town guests, and since it was a beautiful night we thought they would enjoy the view of the boats on the little lake. Overall, not bad, just know that the patrons are probably 97% tourists. Request ahead to be seated outside."

  • "Third visit in 8 years on sightseeing/shopping visits. Beautiful venue and view. Previous visits were in spring and fall-summer is extremely busy! Waited for table (even with reservation). Service was good, there was a wait for food, they were very busy. Crabcake was very fishy and obviously not fresh. Fish and chips has zero taste and soggy. Linguine with clams was fair-the clams being overcooked and so tough, inedible. The food was so much better on recent visits, very disappointing. I would recommend a visit for drinks or dessert, or enjoy the view from the patio in nice weather. The food is definitely not worth the long wait (1-2 hours without a resevation) or the cost."

  • "We had a great meal at the Boat House in Central Park. The service was excellent as was the food. The only negative was people waiting at the top of the stairs for a table to become available. Should be queuing out of sight. Suggest you book in advance for this restaurant and be prepared to pay a little extra for the location."

  • "There are many praising reviews of the Boathouse, so we were looking forward to a treat. Luckily we had made a booking weeks in advance, as the queue grew very long while we were there. We had a prime table, right on the front of the patio, so the venue and location scored very highly. The service was efficient but stand-offish to the point of being unfriendly. The menu looked very promising, but instead of the expected excellence, did not stand out as particularly exceptional."

  • "I loved the boathouse for the atmosphere. The staff was great and say us on the water. No judgmental looks over our post-day-in-NYC-with-no-time-to-freshen-up appearance. Super sweet to our 12 year old. I was not nuts about the dinner menu but knew that going in. I got the arugula salad (very good) and lump crab cake (decent). My husband said his meal was ok. My son ordered the filet, and I thought it was less than good, to be honest. But still, the atmosphere, the scene, the ...everything... Is just so great that you have to go. Perhaps brunch or lunch menus and food are better."

  • "I love the boathouse for entertaining out of town visitors. The walk to the restaurant gives you a chance to explore Central Park before settling down for dinner or drinks. The boathouse is also a perfect spot for date night or celebrating any occasion. I hosted my birthday outing here last summer. The food is great, the ambiance is wonderful - highly recommend."

  • "Food was great but the service was really lacking. No one came by to ask if we wanted anything else. Had to ask for coffee and then no milk or cream was offered. Dishes weren't cleared until we asked. Had to track down the waitress for our bill and then tip was automatically added to the bill. I took my niece there as a special treat but would not go back Very disappointed"

  • "I have been wanting to come here for years. Luckily we made reservations because walk-ups at 1pm on a Friday were looking at a 1 1/2 hour wait. We were pleased to be seated in the open air patio. Our waiter seemed more stuffy than anything. But we always make it our goal to make people smile. And we did succeed. For the food, the Strawberry Arugula Salad was very good. I also liked the bread selection. For lunch, my boyfriend ordered the chicken, which he said was "OK". Nothing spectacular. I ordered the special...the Lobster Roll. It was pretty bland. There were huge chunks of lobster that were really tough and rubbery. It was not worth $38! The Boathouse definitely does NOT live up to the hype! I wouldn't recommend eating here!"

  • "Good food, crowded and noisy, many tourists but that's to be expected. food was very good but service was poor, our waiter was hard to get a hold of. Overall the view on the "lac" at sunset and the good food make the Boat House a nice place for dinner."

  • "As we arrived, I was told I could not be seated until our party's fourth member arrived (she would soon be there), and I was told one of the bottles I brought along could not be corked because it was already on their list (for a 100% markup, though I understand this is common). The staff were quite unwelcoming. When our group's final member arrived, we were given an Applebee's-style buzzer and told to wait yet again. Once seated, at least one champagne glass had a lipstick stain, and the appetizers, especially the arugula salad, were bland and underwhelming. While our waiter was charming and understanding, and the entrees and desserts were excellent, our treatment at the evening's beginning was inexcusable considering the high price tag."

  • "My husband and I booked in advance and were given a great table for two at the front of the balcony. View was special, food great and the service was friendly and professional. Open Table made the process of booking ahead very streamline."

  • "The individual servers were very pleasant as was the hosting staff. It just felt as though there were no manager on duty. Timing off. Took forever to get anything. Everyone seemed to be running around without any direction. Food was good and the views were beautiful."

  • "A friend and I went here to have a celebratory supper! And oh was it just the right place. We went right after work, 6:30 reservation. The wait service was attentive and our fellow diners were friendly. The food was good, not exceptional, but definitely not bad. Overall, you pay extra for the ambiance and feeling of "not being in New York." Always a hit in my book."

  • "This was our first time in New York and dinning at The Boat House was a dream coming true. A great experience that made our Central Park visit to become even more especial. My family loved it. Food was wonderful and price was fare. We totally recomend!"

  • "We were recommended to dine here by a friend from NYC. I am so glad we were able to do so- we were seated right by the water and could see all the activities taking place and also enjoyed some of the view of the city. We had a great meal. The breads served were absolutely wonderful. Our waiter was very accommodating and was at our service very quickly. I would highly recommend this to anyone going to NYC as well."

  • "We barely saw our waiter, Kenny. I had to flag him down at every step- bread, water, check. When we did see him, he mumbled a few things and would promptly leave. We felt totally unwelcomed. I guess he didn't care about service since he just adds auto-gratuity on to the check. We were a table of three. I get this is a touristy place, but if this is the restaurant's (rude) policy it should be posted for guests to clearly see. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. My salmon in pea puree was bland and tasteless, but cost almost $30. I used to enjoy this place for the ambience, but I will not be going back."

  • "Would not recommend for dinner, have heard brunch is better. I told the hostess and made mention in the Open Table reservation that this was a special birthday dinner for my daughter. Hostess acknowledged my bday dinner note for my daughter when we checked in. I was hoping that a little dessert or something would have been done for her. Nothing was done. Spoke to the GM when I left and told him of my disappointment and he said he was sorry but I should have said something earlier. Had heard dinner was overrated and overpriced but the scenery was lovely, my daughter had always wanted to go there since seeing the movie 27 Dresses."

  • "The food was delicious. But the service wasn't great. My husband sat for about 45 minutes without w drink and without the waiter asking of he'd like another. The bathroom was poorly maintained, they did have a bathroom attendant stationed inside with a tip jar out, but the toilet had urine on it and the countertop was soaking wet. It happened to be pretty crowded and many people were standing by the steps to get down to the tables. The managers were just standing around also the the steps, every now and again they would help the host seat someone but that was the extent. Also when the bill came I was surprise to see the gratuity added in when we were only a party of 2. I'd go back for the food and the view maybe for lunch."
