A word from Central Park BoatHouse
With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!

We were on honeymoon and made it known to the staff prior to our arrival & unfortunately the message was never passed on. The girl that shows us to our table was great and more attentive then anyone else! Food was fine, expensive for what It was, service nothing special at all and we didn't bother staying for dessert. Wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

"Minor" detail, we took our grandmother to have lunch there for her birthday! "Bread server": Straight face the whole time. Everytime we wanted bread, we had to deal with it. Second time we order bread, we threw the bread towards one of the plates, so the bread fell out of the plate. Awkward and embarassing situation. "Server's helper": Asked him for paper napkins. 10 minutes went by, so I thought he might have had forgotten me. Called him again just to get a rude response "you already asked me that!". I was so angry by that, our main server came talking to us "where are you from?" and etc. He apologized TWICE in the name of his colleagues. I wish I had never chosen that restaurant for such a special date. I am NEVER going back there again.

We celebrated our anniversary here last year and were back again this year. All of our selections (breads, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts) were delicious and the service was kind and attentive without being intrusive. And it's hard to beat the lovely and peaceful setting, open to the air and right on the lake. Like going to the country for a few hours. We'll be back next year!

I booked this restaurant from Australia several weeks ago for our 20th anniversary lunch & made a special request for a nice table. The day b4 our lunch, we were in Central Park so I popped in 2 reconfirm and again put in a special rqst for a nice table-lakeside. The man at the entrance who assigned guests to their seats seemed as if he couldn't care less. From here on, I thought that I hope the service isn't all like this. We returned today and unfortunately service was ALL BAD! Food was very average, or very dry-literally. Best things were the pretzel & the coffee. Unfortunately they don't care for service because gratuity is included in the bill. Don't waste your money here. There are much more deserving places to eat at in Manhattan!!!!

My wife and I got married at the Boathouse and we go back every year for our anniversary. This was by far the worst service we're had in our many trips to NYC. The tip that was included in the bill I was not happy about giving, on that night I would have only given him 10% due to the poor service. Once seated, it seemed to always take awhile to get his attention, having only checked on us once the whole meal. The table next to us (2 feet away) got 10 times better service for some reason.

Made reservation asking to be seated outdoors.Upon arrival, was told "it's too hot to seat anyone outside." It was warm out, but inside was much warmer,my wife and I were sweating. At the outdoor seating area were people with suits and dresses.I don't know if it was a private event or if they were allowed outside because of how they dressed, but regardless I was lied to.We dressed in the stated dress code, yet others wore shorts and t-shirts.There were flies we kept swatting away, food was overpriced, bland, and small portions left us hungry. When we were sat eating in the hot, overpriced and overrated restaurant eating mediocre food with flies swarming around, we joked we should have gone to Olive Garden. The sad part is we kind of meant it.

We had a lovely time at this restaurant during our stay and especially enjoyed the amazing view. Our meals were good with the desert of the crepes being a definite highlight as that is all I can now remember about the food! The only real negative I can comment is that it felt like we were being rushed through our meal so a second seating was possible. This could just be the quick service that you generally get in the US which we are not used to however, for a romantic evening it is nice to take your time between each course to enjoy and savour the experience.

If there is something called tourist-trap this must be it. For what you get the food is expensive, the personal is uninterrested. They give you no attention at all. There is no extra at any time. Not in food, not in service. We had different meals and all had the same conclusion. Its a nice environment, though...

Was a bit surprised at how good the food was. Often with the "scenic" restaurant comes the less than fine food. Loved the bread guy with5 different choices who circulated, was not hard to "flag down" and was not stingy! Very much enjoyed my heirloom tomato gazpacho and branzino with summer vegetables. My daughter liked the arugula/strawberry salad and loved the swordfish. No room for dessert. So pleasant to sit outside by "the water" and no noise of trucks passing by. A welcome NYC respite.

The Boathouse is a classy restaurant with beautiful views across the Central Park boating lake. The menu choice and the service were excellent with a recommendation from the waiter (who had previously worked in Venice) leading to us experiencing the most amazing crab cake ever! Good size portions. Relaxed, happy atmosphere. Also recommend the clam linguine. The restaurant is a MUST for a NYC experience. It is best to book ahead to avoid long waits.

This was the second time we've had a delightful experience eating here! Both times we enjoyed a varied lunch menu, excellent friendly service, and wonderful view of the row boaters on the lake. This time, early Sept, we were surrounded by many tourists. Last year, in mid-October, it was more of a Metropolitan atmosphere of people. Each time, we and our friends all ordered something different and we thoroughly enjoyed all. We like to take a walk through the park to get there, but if that is inconvenient, you can park in the Metroplitan Museum of Art's parking garage and take a short shuttle bus to the restaurant. When you go, dress nicely. It is a special place and shorts and a tank top or printed tee shirt are too casual.

Service is predictable and underwhelming. Food was good for a lunch menu although the offerings were somewhat limited. The restrooms are in dire need of an upgrade. For a restaurant in this part of town, catering to an upscale customer, the restroom accomodations were dingy, dark and unfresh.

Every time we are in NYC we try to have lunch at the Boat House. We have even stopped for lunch while driving back from Rhode Island. We love the view and the ambiance, and we frequently have some kind of magical experience. As often as we go it would be impossible to not have had a few disappointments. This time was one of the magical ones; the day, the food, the waiter, everything was as good as it can be. A recommendation we would make for everyone. For us, something we do every time.

We chose the Boat House to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary and were absolutely glad we did. On a beautiful late summer night, the open air setting looking back to the skyline created a wonderfully relaxed and romantic atmosphere. While it is not an eclectic, foodie-type menu, there was sufficient variety to satisfy most palates. Our appetizers and main courses were well prepared, fresh and delicious. Our server, Amanda, took great pride in her job and the restuarant and it showed in the way she interacted with us. She even suggested that we make sure to return when it is snowing so we can see how beautiful the restaurant and the Central Park are in that setting. It's my fourth visit to the Boat House and would gladly recommend it.

The Boat House was recommended to us by a friend. We weren't let down. The ambience and service were second to none, however the waiter did point out the Dakota building to us and I know from previous visits that it's was clearly not the Dakota. One disappointing aspect was that I ordered the Tenderloin of pork 'med. to well done ' and it really was quite rare. Tasty but never the less not cooked to my request . Over all however we had a very enjoyable evening.

Came here a second time for my mother-in-law's 79th birthday lunch (first time was dinner for my wife's birthday). Always a pleasure coming to the Boathouse - it was a gorgeous summer day, the view is lovely, the service is great. Lunchtime is kid-friendly - we had our 20 month old with us. It was great to have a nice lunch in a fancy restaurant that is child friendly. There were other toddlers and kids there enjoying their experience, and the place is outdoors and loud enough to keep the kids noise from being intrusive. The food is good - not amazing - but certainly good enough. Good food, plus great view/ambiance, and excellent service gives the Boathouse 5 stars.
