A word from Central Park BoatHouse
With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I anticipated the restaurant would be picturesque and the food would be delicious (both of which were true) but I was so appreciative of the wonderful service. On a very busy afternoon the wait staff was very patient and kind with my family of four even when one of my children spilled a drink. We will remember the boathouse as a very special NYC experience. • "Brunch was wonderful in the past. Dinner just as lovely. Staff was wonderful, my waiter was exceptional and intuitive. It was wonderful to be in conversation with my friend without being interrupted every 5 minutes. My waiter was on top of our service without being annoying. I would recommend the Bronzino, delicious and my friend enjoyed her salmon just the same. A wonderful experience."

  • "We have heard so much about your restaurang from our friends in Stockholm, Sweden. We had high expectations. We had the most wonderful lunch. The service was fantastic and so were the food and atmosphere. We will come next time in New York."

  • "The atmosphere of the Boathouse was charming. The service was excellent and the food was very good. I ordered the salmon which was delicious. My friend ordered the fish and chips which she felt was marginal. I would definitely return to the restaurant to try other items on the menu. I'd love to be able to visit in the summer or fall so that I could take advantage of outdoor dining and the breathtaking view of Central Park."

  • "You need to book in advance, so take the time for planning a visit to The Boathouse. You will not regret it. The food is like a dream, and the waiters will spoil you. The view over the lake and the park is the perfect frame for this delightful event."

  • "Too crowded and having a reservation didn't help. We still had to wait 1/2 hour. And after waiting 30 min to be seated, we then had to wait at least 30 min to be served. Don't know why the "scenic view" restaurants just can't get it right! Service was especially poor."

  • "I booked a table at 3:00pm and got it at 4:00pm. The staff left his smile at the entrance. The service was rude. The food was OK but overpriced. The coffee is probably a better option i guess"

  • "Food was just ok Limited menu Felt rushed by staff Nice views by waterfront"

  • "Was so excited to finally go to the famous Boathouse. Tragically, was disappointed. Lovely setting and elegant décor. But that's it. Mass catering, tables too close together and food so so average. Bog standard pasta (you could make better at home) and worst of all a cheeseboard comprising various plastic processed cheeses served at FRIDGE temperature - just murder for cheese. Won't be recommending it as great food, but it was a nice place to go."

  • "Love to go here but food was only a 5 this time versus an 8-9. Hope this was an anomoly"

  • "The atmosphere is so beautiful here, that its an added bonus that the food is so good. I've been coming here for twenty years, and it never disappoints. The staff is just fantastic as well. The walk through the park is a great way to finish off the experience."

  • "We had a window side table with a great view of the pond for our excellent lunch. The food was well prepared and delicious. Service was very good and the waitstaff and hostesses were very pleasant. The only criticism I would have is the cost of bar drinks-very pricey so be prepared!"

  • "Is was my wife fifty birthday and I wanted to surprise her with a romantic lunch. Everything went perfect:the Restaurant Boathouse is very beautiful and de food excelent, and the views were very romantic. We took the salmon which was really perfect and also the steak, but the best were the desserts and the canddle on the top. We thank the waiters who helped to make everything unforgetable. We will be back in our next journey!"

  • "I first visited the Boathouse ten years ago with my wife, it left such an impression on me that on my son's 40th birthday we went back to the same venue and really enjoyed it. I only visit New York on rare occasions from Ireland now but it is so nice to take in the whole atmosphere of the Park. Thank you and Regards Edmond Thompson"

  • "We had a great lunch at the Loeb Boat house. Service was 1st class. They also looked after us with a table right next to the window. I would highly recommend this restaurant for food, service and ambiance. They even have a courtesy shuttle bus to take you out of Central Park and dropped us so we could grab a cab."

  • "Thank goodness I read other reviews before my own dining experience. I felt I knew exactly what to expect and this held true. I was totally satisfied with my selection of the lump crab cake. Absolutely wonderful. Prices were quite high but what do you expect when dining in NYC's Central Park. The view was beautiful as expected. The service was adequate, nothing exceptional. We did get a seat at the window, though it was so sunny out and the awnings could not be used due to high winds, so we asked to be changed to a different table which worked out fine, as we could still see the lake view but did not have the blaring sun to content with. Overall, satisfied with our dining experience."

  • "I was recommended the boathouse by a friend and was not disappointed. The whole experience was fabulous. The atmosphere, the service and particularly the food were amazing. I would definitely come again and would recommend it as a must do when visiting NYC"

  • "Having reserved for 2 PM and requested a table near the water (for a birthday celebration), I arrived at 1:50 -- and was not seated for forty minutes, and then only barely. No tables near the window for four were given to parties of two (only to parties of three or more); we were on our way to seats elsewhere when a table for two opened up miraculously, but not by design. We were then in the sun, and no waiter offered to lower the outdoor shade, which we hadn't noticed until apparently another table made the request. This restaurant either takes far more reservations than they acknowledge, or ignore seating requests for small parties."

  • "My wife spent a decade in NYC from the mid-1960s, when the boathouse was in her words " a hotdog stand alongside the lake." Now it is a busy, upscale restaurant, with a wide-ranging menu and wine list suited to its special location in Central Park. We had booked lunch on what turned out to be a rare spring-like day in early March. The restaurant filled rapidly. Service was friendly and efficient. Our meals - an original salad, grilled striped bass (one of the day's specials), and a shared dessert - were good. The wine list was expensive and did not mention any wines by the glass, although these seemed to be available from the bar. Definitely worth the visit, but more for an occasion than for everyday dining."

  • "We come here every time we visit NYC and it never fails to impress. Great food, fabulous service and atmosphere. We were thorughly entertained by Clay our waiter who really has the whole service thing worked out. We stayed loneger and spent way more than we intended but it was well worth it. So much better than the very ordinary meals we've had in NYC at similar prices."

  • "We had a great lunch at the Boathouse on a February Monday. After a nice walk in the sunny Cental Park, we had a very good meal with excellent service. We were very happy to have a table just in front of the window with a nice view over the icecovered sea. Absolutely one of the best moments on our visit to New York!"

  • "The Boathouse is a fantastic and romantic place to have lunch. After a stop at Tiffany's we walked to the Boathouse where we had reservations for lunch. We were seated at the floor to ceiling windows as per our request. Because it was unusually cold on this day, it was a little chilly and drafty along the glass. Either way we didn't let it bother us as the food, service and view was perfect. A great start to a memorable day!"

  • "Had lunch in Central Park at the Boat House on a glorious sunny winter afternoon. Had a table overlooking the lake- only negative was that the lake was frozen, so no row boating after lunch!! Service was very good- server made recommendations which were fabulous. Food well prepared and presented. All dishes had distinct flavors. Would recommend to anyone that they have a dining experience at the Boat House!!"

  • "I cannot write a review because when I called to confirm the booking I was told we didn't have a reservation which i was most annoyed about when i had received an email several weeks prior to visiting New York confirming my reservation. So we didn't go to the Boathouse after all as we decided that if there was a mistake with the booking what other mistakes would we encounter."

  • "We booked reservations at the BoatHouse, in spite of the bad food reviews at Yelp Site. Decided the view and ambience would be worth it. We found the staff friendly and helpful and the snowy tree lined lake view was stunning. The expensive martini was strong and perfectly shaken. The crab cakes and sashimi artfully presented, and tasting ocean fresh. The entrees were amply sized with perfectly crunchy side veggies. I had chicken and my husband fish. I'm sorry for those who stayed away because of unrepresentative reviews. Glad we took a chance.... 'twas delightful."

  • "It was my boyfriends 30th so we were in NY for the weekend. This was recommended to me by a friend and I will definitely be recommending it to anyone else going to NY. The food was delightful and the atmosphere was lovely. We were sat at a table right in the window overlooking the beautiful frozen lake. I would love to come here in the summer as I can imagine it is stunning at this time of year. Overall; good service, wonderful ambience, gorgeous food and amazing scenery. I will definitely be returning."

  • "The Loeb boathouse in Central Park is set in the most amazing location. From the moment you enter you get a feel for the quality and ambience. The service is first class, from being shown to your table to being shown the menu and talked through the specials. We treated ourselves to a three course lunch and was not disappointed with any of the food we received, the portion sizes are surprisingly on the larger side for the price you pay, however, this is no complaint. Our three courses were served in a timely fashion with no long waits between courses but without ever feeling rushed, we were given water at every opportunity. We were both thrilled with our experience and will be recommending the Loeb to all our friends visiting NYC"

  • "My friends and I were visiting New York and wanted to try lunch at the Loeb Boathouse. The atmosphere was amazing and the service was impeccable. The food was average. I had their blended loose leaf tea which was some of the best I have had. I would definitely recommend this as a good place for light appetizers, tea and a fantastic view. But as far as the meal is concerned, you can definitely find better meals at that price in other areas in New York City."
