A word from Central Park BoatHouse
With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Third visit in 8 years on sightseeing/shopping visits. Beautiful venue and view. Previous visits were in spring and fall-summer is extremely busy! Waited for table (even with reservation). Service was good, there was a wait for food, they were very busy. Crabcake was very fishy and obviously not fresh. Fish and chips has zero taste and soggy. Linguine with clams was fair-the clams being overcooked and so tough, inedible. The food was so much better on recent visits, very disappointing. I would recommend a visit for drinks or dessert, or enjoy the view from the patio in nice weather. The food is definitely not worth the long wait (1-2 hours without a resevation) or the cost."

  • "We had a great meal at the Boat House in Central Park. The service was excellent as was the food. The only negative was people waiting at the top of the stairs for a table to become available. Should be queuing out of sight. Suggest you book in advance for this restaurant and be prepared to pay a little extra for the location."

  • "I loved the boathouse for the atmosphere. The staff was great and say us on the water. No judgmental looks over our post-day-in-NYC-with-no-time-to-freshen-up appearance. Super sweet to our 12 year old. I was not nuts about the dinner menu but knew that going in. I got the arugula salad (very good) and lump crab cake (decent). My husband said his meal was ok. My son ordered the filet, and I thought it was less than good, to be honest. But still, the atmosphere, the scene, the ...everything... Is just so great that you have to go. Perhaps brunch or lunch menus and food are better."

  • "I love the boathouse for entertaining out of town visitors. The walk to the restaurant gives you a chance to explore Central Park before settling down for dinner or drinks. The boathouse is also a perfect spot for date night or celebrating any occasion. I hosted my birthday outing here last summer. The food is great, the ambiance is wonderful - highly recommend."

  • "Food was great but the service was really lacking. No one came by to ask if we wanted anything else. Had to ask for coffee and then no milk or cream was offered. Dishes weren't cleared until we asked. Had to track down the waitress for our bill and then tip was automatically added to the bill. I took my niece there as a special treat but would not go back Very disappointed"

  • "I have been wanting to come here for years. Luckily we made reservations because walk-ups at 1pm on a Friday were looking at a 1 1/2 hour wait. We were pleased to be seated in the open air patio. Our waiter seemed more stuffy than anything. But we always make it our goal to make people smile. And we did succeed. For the food, the Strawberry Arugula Salad was very good. I also liked the bread selection. For lunch, my boyfriend ordered the chicken, which he said was "OK". Nothing spectacular. I ordered the special...the Lobster Roll. It was pretty bland. There were huge chunks of lobster that were really tough and rubbery. It was not worth $38! The Boathouse definitely does NOT live up to the hype! I wouldn't recommend eating here!"

  • "Romance is practically mandated here. On the water, in Central Park, with excellent food...hard to beat."

  • "Good food, crowded and noisy, many tourists but that's to be expected. food was very good but service was poor, our waiter was hard to get a hold of. Overall the view on the "lac" at sunset and the good food make the Boat House a nice place for dinner."

  • "As we arrived, I was told I could not be seated until our party's fourth member arrived (she would soon be there), and I was told one of the bottles I brought along could not be corked because it was already on their list (for a 100% markup, though I understand this is common). The staff were quite unwelcoming. When our group's final member arrived, we were given an Applebee's-style buzzer and told to wait yet again. Once seated, at least one champagne glass had a lipstick stain, and the appetizers, especially the arugula salad, were bland and underwhelming. While our waiter was charming and understanding, and the entrees and desserts were excellent, our treatment at the evening's beginning was inexcusable considering the high price tag."

  • "My husband and I booked in advance and were given a great table for two at the front of the balcony. View was special, food great and the service was friendly and professional. Open Table made the process of booking ahead very streamline."

  • "The individual servers were very pleasant as was the hosting staff. It just felt as though there were no manager on duty. Timing off. Took forever to get anything. Everyone seemed to be running around without any direction. Food was good and the views were beautiful."

  • "A friend and I went here to have a celebratory supper! And oh was it just the right place. We went right after work, 6:30 reservation. The wait service was attentive and our fellow diners were friendly. The food was good, not exceptional, but definitely not bad. Overall, you pay extra for the ambiance and feeling of "not being in New York." Always a hit in my book."

  • "We had dinner there in a rainy evening. The service and food were wounderful but some people Drinking and laughing at a high level of noise ruined the food experience."

  • "We were recommended to dine here by a friend from NYC. I am so glad we were able to do so- we were seated right by the water and could see all the activities taking place and also enjoyed some of the view of the city. We had a great meal. The breads served were absolutely wonderful. Our waiter was very accommodating and was at our service very quickly. I would highly recommend this to anyone going to NYC as well."

  • "We barely saw our waiter, Kenny. I had to flag him down at every step- bread, water, check. When we did see him, he mumbled a few things and would promptly leave. We felt totally unwelcomed. I guess he didn't care about service since he just adds auto-gratuity on to the check. We were a table of three. I get this is a touristy place, but if this is the restaurant's (rude) policy it should be posted for guests to clearly see. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. My salmon in pea puree was bland and tasteless, but cost almost $30. I used to enjoy this place for the ambience, but I will not be going back."

  • "We were quite surprised and pleased with the quality of the food and attentiveness of the service. Our water side table made the experience that much more enjoyable. Both us and our out of town guests were delighted with this hidden gem."

  • "Would not recommend for dinner, have heard brunch is better. I told the hostess and made mention in the Open Table reservation that this was a special birthday dinner for my daughter. Hostess acknowledged my bday dinner note for my daughter when we checked in. I was hoping that a little dessert or something would have been done for her. Nothing was done. Spoke to the GM when I left and told him of my disappointment and he said he was sorry but I should have said something earlier. Had heard dinner was overrated and overpriced but the scenery was lovely, my daughter had always wanted to go there since seeing the movie 27 Dresses."

  • "The food was delicious. But the service wasn't great. My husband sat for about 45 minutes without w drink and without the waiter asking of he'd like another. The bathroom was poorly maintained, they did have a bathroom attendant stationed inside with a tip jar out, but the toilet had urine on it and the countertop was soaking wet. It happened to be pretty crowded and many people were standing by the steps to get down to the tables. The managers were just standing around also the the steps, every now and again they would help the host seat someone but that was the extent. Also when the bill came I was surprise to see the gratuity added in when we were only a party of 2. I'd go back for the food and the view maybe for lunch."

  • "The setting is of course a gem…and the food is great, the service is great. If you happen to be there on one of the nights when the fireworks happen, well that is just an added reason to celebrate. And if you also happen to get a table by the water…well, your luck is doubled. I'll be back for more FUN!"

  • "We dined here while we spent the last leg of our honeymoon in NY. It was recommended to us by a family member who had dined here previously. It did meet our expectations, it was a romantic venue, lovely view of the lake and skyline in the background. We got a waterfront table which was great, we had booked our reservation time a couple of months in advance, not sure how far you need to do it, however the restaurant was really busy (Friday night). The food was delicious, we had the fillet steak and lamb shank. My wife particulary enjoyed the cranberry bread. The only negative thing was that it is a bit on the pricy side but we were there for a special occasion so that didn't matter"

  • "Food was average at best w/ some of the highest prices in the city. Go for the view & a cocktail but be prepared to be underwhelmed if you order food. Rack of lamb ($46) was overcooked & potatoes that came with it were undercooked & raw. Gato & Rafele were FAR superior & food was cheaper & EXCEPTIONAL!!!"

  • "Lunch on Fri 7/11 at 2:30 p.m. You MUST have a reservation or you will either wait for hours OR there will be NO availability. Lots of people were turned away. Reservation does not guarantee you will get seated at your time -- luckily, only 2 of us, so we only waited 15 minutes. We were 1 table away from water -- nice view. If you are from out-of-town, plan on extra time to find the restaurant in Central Park. Signage is minimal and restaurant's phone directions were not helpful. Even GPS was of minimal help. Food -- very good. Had crab cake (not the caliber of a Maryland cake, but NO filler :) and pasta dish with shrimp (good). Service was ok, but not deserving of tip beyond standard %. Big tourist spot but lovely lunch."

  • "Recommended by friends to go here, booked dinner reservation on line, very relaxed ambience, excellent views of Central Park. Good menu choices. Waiter service was excellent, not rushed. Food was well presented and full of flavour. Good wine choices, not over priced."

  • "I've been wanting to try the Boat House, and I made a reservation for my family a few times (without me) and they've given great reviews. But when I went, I felt that it could do better. It was for my birthday and I requested for a table by the lake-not given. I know that a lot of people request for this. But we were early and there were still so many vacant spots by the lake but the host decided to put us inner in the restaurant. I also felt rushed by the servers to decide on my food. I didn't feel this from other good restaurants, not even from Michelin-starred restaurants. Be that as it may, the servers were very nice and polite. I'm willing to give this restaurant another try. I also was not given a note that cabs can't get in at PM."

  • "This past week we had lunch at the Biathouse, we checked the dress code online and saw 'business casual'. We dressed in skirts and tops. I know that there is both the cafeteria and the restaurant, we expected that the dress code would be more relaxed in the cafeteria. However we were a bit disappointed with the dress code in the restaurant as the ambiance is lovely for a more formal environment, we were surprised to see diners in jeans shorts and running gear. The food was outstanding- the dress code given the setting was a lot more casual than we expected."

  • "What a gem of a find in Central Park. We are from Sydney Australia, and so are spoilt for great outdoor eating venues. Central Park Boathouse was certainly up there. Great views across the lake to the city backdrop. Food was great too, and although not a place you might afford to eat every week, it was actually good value for the food you got. We will definitely go back."

  • "Loeb Boathouse is a goregoeus romantic gem in the middle of Central Park. Views are amazing, both day and night. This was my second time dining at this restaurant and will definitely go again. We were there with my children, ages 5,12,14 and they loved it, but take in consideration that it is a good option for children who enjoy great food and who love going out to different restaurants and know how to be sitting, as this is a beautiful setting where people go to enjoy a nice dinner. Both times we witnessed a proposal, so that was very nice. The lake makes it a magical experience in the middle of one of the most visited city parks."

  • "I had long wanted to have a meal at this restaurant. First visit, no reservations and no room. Second visit, reservations but thwarted by picket line. Third visit, bingo! We had a great dinner here on a lovely Sunday evening. The service was very good (they graciously accommodated us 1/2 an hour before our reservation), they provided good guidance on gluten-, soy-, and dairy-free selections and the food was very well executed. I had fish on pea puree that was yummy, but my daughter had the better dish, a delicious pork tenderloin. The sorbet selection for dessert was perfect. This is quite a busy restaurant so not really romantic, but a great view over the lake and the park and it was lovely to stroll through the park after dinner."

  • "If you are looking for a relaxing, elegant, fun place for a great meal or special occasion The Boathouse is the place. The views are spectactular and you feel as if you are sitting in the middle of a large retreat, not in a city while listening to the birds and watching the sunset over the pond. We never felt rushed and brought our 13 year old grandaughter for her birthday which the staff made to feel special. At the last minute I had to move our reservations out some and The Boathouse was most accommodating. We will defineately come again on our next trip to NYC."

  • "We had supper at thei Boathouse during a downpour, so the windows to the lake were closed and it was so noisy we had to raise our voices to converse. I was serve limp prociutto blanketed over a square block of (not so) fresh mozzerella and basil cream. Our fresh cherry tomato pasta with fresh basil leaves was instead a thick, cooked down sauce with a few slivers of basil, undetectable in the flavor. We had to ask and wait for a fork after the entrees were served. The ladies room was agag with sewer gas. Not kidding here. The poor woman, hired to stand there collecting tips for I don't know what, told me that the management was aware of it. If you don't have a table nect to the lake in nice weather you don't have anything at the Boathouse."

  • "The right place to be during torrential rain: inside the Boathouse looking over the pond. Our table loved the crab-cake opener, fell asleep trying to eat the arugula salad, and enjoyed the halibut and swordfish entrees. Desserts weren't exceptional, unless you happen to love sweetened bananas (given the caramel treatment in a 'tarte Tatin'). Cheapest bottle was $55. The staff was cheerful and attentive, but the real stunner was finding an undisclosed tip attached to our bill -- we were only four, not 'six or more.'"

  • "We arrived and it was noisy and not at all "dressy." It was loud and kids were everywhere. We sat right away. However, no one came to our table for 15 minutes, not even a hello or I'll be right with you. The glasses on the table were dirty and water stained. The arugula salad was a plate of arugula and three slices of a roasted strawberry. Our server didn't check on us once. The runner brought our entrees before our plates were cleared and had to go back to the kitchen. Entrees were a disaster. I took one bite of tuna tartare and pulled plastic out of my mouth, which turned out to be a fish scale. We finally got some attention and then paid the check with gratuity already added. Which I believe is illegal in NY. Overall bad experience."
