Diner Reviews
  • "As always, David Hale and his team provide not only perfectly prepared and beautifully presented food, but impeccable service all of which creates unforgettable dining experiences. And the bar is second to none. The cocktails alone are worth visiting. Central since it's opening keeps getting better and better."

  • "Menu seemed a bit limited, noise level too loud - felt like I was in an echo chamber, and it was difficult to talk."

  • "I like Central a lot. Be forwarned, it appears they have made recent, slight tweaks to the menu. I went this week, looking forward to having their warm, spinach bacon and egg salad for lunch, but it is off the menu, as is their bacon sweet onion tart, which was another one of my favorites. However, there are many excellent options that remain. A constant standout is their dry-aged beef burger, and the fried chicken. If you can, save room for dessert as well. I have never had a bad experience, or bad meal, and their servers are gracious, prompt and knowledgeable."

  • "This use to be my favorite place in DC but in the last 6 months the service has been terrible multiple times and now they have consolidated the menu to the point where it is not even worth going back..."

  • "This as my 2nd visit on a trip to DC. I enjoyed my 1st meal better, but my husband & I enjoyed our meals. Sea Bass with Arugula Salad could have used a bit more pizzazz, but was very good. My husband enjoyed his hangar steak, & we shared a delicious, refreshing beet salad. The beet salad was a bit difficult to eat..everything was diced into tiny pieces & it was served with a fork. Suggestion: a spoon would've been far easier. I did think, however, that 17.00 was pricey for this starter salad! I'm a chef . We dine out often, but I don't think that we often have to pay 17.00 for a non-entree beet salad! The trio of ice cream & sorbet for dessert was delicious, particularly the homemade vanilla bean."

  • "The reservation included a request for quiet table. Instead we were placed right in front of the kitchen. After awhile, the staff did accommodate us with a slightly better table. While the food was very good (especially the gazpacho), the noise level was was too high, and the ambiance left a bit to be desired. After numerous high quality visits to Central, this time it missed the mark."

  • "The food was good, but not incredible. The celebration cake was fantastic. They tried to sit us next to the kitchen, but it was so noisy we asked to be seated outside, which was great. The wine list was decent, but not overwhelming. I was disappointed with only two local wines, both of which were over my budget."

  • "Central never fails to please. The menu options are wonderful: sophisticated comfort food for American francophiles. Servers are knowledgable, efficient and full of personality. The dining room is very handsome and seems larger than it is because of very high ceilings. All of the elements are right, the most important of which is the food. The best Parisian bistro food, improved, brought to Pennsylvania Avenue. Bravo Michel."

  • "We had a nice outside table, watching the Washington scene go by. The food, wine and service were excellent and the bill was not too expensive, given the fine food and drink. Loved it and will go back with friends and family. Great location and dining experience."

  • "I enjoyed our evening, but having been to this renowned restaurant before, I expected more. We were told when reviewing the menu that is was a shortened list due to the holiday, July 4th weekend. The entree I ordered in the past, Mussels, were at best average when ordered this night... Not tasty and not served hot. We were treated well, but our server seemed a bit rushed and was also trying to fit between our table and our neighbors's table to help each of us. Not the greatest dining experience. I am hoping it was due to the holiday weekend and will never happen again. What a shame!"

  • "We have been to Central on special occasions and each time it's a culinary feast! Everything is outstanding - the food, the service, the ambience. It is our "go to" place when we want to show our out-of-town friends and family a vibrant part of Washington, D.C."

  • "I have wanted to go to Central for years and it far exceeded my expectations. Incredible food, fantastic services, lovely atmosphere and a tasty, eclectic wine list. I highly recommend the fried chicken, believe it or not. The best I have ever had. Truly an outstanding meal."

  • "Excellent food (Steak Tartare appetizer, fried chicken, crab cake burger, and the steak au poivre all were fantastic!), professional, fast, and friendly service, and great down-to-earth atmosphere. Overall, highly recommended."

  • "Our first time at a Richard concept in along time and it was long overdue as the ambience didn't disappoint. Soft shell crabs were insanely delicious and the drinks were perfect. We sat at the bar and we knew why, best service at the bar!"

  • "We went to Central Michel Richard after a Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra concert at the National Museum of Natural History. We weren't too hungry, so only got a couple starters each. She had her favorite Faux Gras & Pate followed by a very tasty spinach salad. She also ordered a six-pack of macaroons to go for dessert. (Which she just reported were delicious even a couple days later.) I had the deviled eggs with anchovies and a beet salad. We got the cheese puffs for the table. Service, by Meg, was attentive and friendly. Sparkler displays to celebrate birthdays at a couple tables were amusing to watch from a distance. We will return."

  • "Food was serviceable; wouldn't make it a regular hang out or destination. Would have appreciated more attentive service (not hovering; but not having to search out the server). When at the table, server was professional and good."

  • "I took some friends there for a going away dinner for a co-worker. They loved it! The main course and the desserts were delicious."

  • "The food is always outstanding, no question about it. The service is normally outstanding, but just average this time. The level of service is completely dependent upon who you draw. If you visit often, you'll figure out who to avoid. If you are a first-timer, the odds are in your favor for a great experience."

  • "This was our fifth time at Central in the past 18 months. It's consistently good, with attentive service and delicious choices on the menu."

  • "The food is always good. Anything from the Fried Chicken to Lamb Shank. This time I had the ribeye with peppercorn sauce. It was great. Definitely a go to spot when you are in DC!"

  • "The food was sublime and our waiter was attentive but respectful of our space. I had the plat de jour - Lobster Americaine and my husband had their signature burger - both were delicious as were our appetizers - a frisee salad and French onion soup. The wine recommendation was excellent. And to cap it off, a lovely raspberry tart dessert that had a celebratory candle on it. A wonderful evening and definitely a place I will go to again!"

  • "The dining room was freezing and the waiter seemed bored and distracted. The food was not amazing, as I expected, given the reputation of Chef Richard and the prices."

  • "We have been on holiday for over 2 weeks and this was our best dining experience by far. Soft-shell crab on bed of guacamole was out of this world. Lobster burger superb. Interesting wines to choose from. Will return when next in D.C."

  • "I'm not surprised Michel Richard was chased out of DC. We ate at Central prior to the Theatre. Some of the basics such as the "Special" filet were tough, flavorless and covered in overcooked asparagus. In an attempt to add flavor, a thickened wine au jus was added making the entire item disappointing. To top it off the brussels sprouts had the consistency of mush, clearly coming out of the bottom of a pot, perhaps from the prior night. Service as the restaurant was ok. The restaurant itself is showing serious signs of age. Our menus had disgusting stains. The tables, chairs and facilities all are showing signs of neglect, much like the food. With the new artists coming to DC, go elsewhere and support those that still care."

  • "We came at 5 because we had a commitment at 7. my husband had the pre theatre special and we were very impressed with the quantity and quality of the food, his creme brulee dessert was large enough for us both to share. I had the lemon snitzle which I love and the cheese puffs to start which are fabulous. The food is consistently good here, the waiters attentive, it's just a great all round experience."

  • "it took forever to get seated even though I had a reservation. The front desk seem to be a little confused on the concept of a reservation. 30minutes after my reservation I got seated but it was another 10 minutes before I got asked if I would like a drink. After that the sevice was great and the food was great. I had the roasted chicken witch shouldn't be missed."

  • "Great place to revive with cocktails, retro and reimagined. Soft shell crab on guac a nice summer touch. Frisee, ditto. Creme brulee enormous. Energetic, noisy, whatever -- we talked business without much trouble. But it's never empty."

  • "I recently celebrated my birthday dinner at Central on 6/14/14 and had quite the memorable night! My friends and I dined here, arrived a tad late, added a few more folks to the table and the front desk team, including our server could not have been more courteous, polite, and accommodating! I had the lobster burger, that was absolutely heavenly! I've been told that the fried chicken is the best here so, I had a little bit of that as well and IT WAS DELICIOUS. Also, had the birthday cake - it was just chocolate goodness, one bite after another. I will definitely come back - thanks again for a fabulous birthday dinner Central Michel Richard staff!"

  • "The food was wonderful as ever! We were quite disappointed, with the table we were given: having company from out of town, we had asked for a table in the back if the restaurant, but when we got there, we were told that not able were available in the back. The table we were given was in the front, where it was quite noisy."

  • "The food is good and the service is good but it is loud and they move you quickly through dinner Because of the service and the noise level, it is not a place one feel's comfortable lingering"

  • "It's been about 3 years since the last time I was here and their food has dramatically declined. I ordered the Lobster Burger which was not good at all, especially for the price. The trout was good and the fried chicken was good, but not as good as they advertised it to be. I also feel that the menu was a lot more limited than last time and they had a lot less interesting food. For dessert, I ordered the lava cake, and usually the center of lava cakes are hot but the whole thing was a bit luke warm. The service was fantastic, but the food not worth paying the prices they are asking for. Will go elsewhere until they improve."

  • "They had no record of our reservation, even though I had email confirmation from Open Table, but it didn't matter because they had empty tables and could accommodate us. One of the specials was soft-shell crabs. We ordered them, and they came very heavily battered and deep-fat fried -- a very poor way to cook soft-shells. What crabmeat there was was somewhat mushy and overwhelmed by the batter. Disappointing, since I was entertaining guests from New England and wanted them to taste Maryland crab. The gougeres we ordered first for the table were good. Very high noise level -- conversation was difficult."
