Diner Reviews
  • "We live in Novato and made the quick drive up to Petaluma after a recommendation from a friend. Wish this place was our neighborhood restaurant. Fresh, local, impeccably prepared food to rival anything in San Francisco at extremely reasonable prices."

  • "We were going to go to a concert at the Mystic, which is conveniently across the street. We arrived in plenty of time and let the server know up front that we were under a time constraint. We were able to order quickly and our food arrived piping hot soon after giving us plenty of time to relax and enjoy our meal. I ordered the Mary's chicken breast over polenta with a mushroom sauce and mixed green, delicious! My SO ordered the salmon, he also liked his dish. Wrap: the food was great and we weren't so overfull that we wanted to go take a nap, so we were able to enjoy the concert without being uncomfortable. A memorable night!"

  • "We stayed in Petaluma 3 nights. We like the food and restaurant so much we ate dinner there 3 times which is something we would hardly ever do."

  • "i was very upset when i heard the place had a fire and was closed for repair. this was my first visit back since the reopen and had a wonderful meal as always. thank you for reopening."

  • "Perfectly prepared food, from the smoky bacon and bleu cheese in the little gems salad to the tender scallops served with pureed potatoes and some vegetables. I'm not such a fan of pureed potatoes, so might prefer to sub another kind if ordering the scallops again. My friend said the halibut cheek was wonderful, and the beets in the salad were cooked exactly as she wanted them. The server was friendly, professional, efficient, even though she had a full station to care for. We never felt rushed. Large room, high ceilings with panels to absorb noise, fun artwork. Most of the food is locally grown and you can actually get grass-fed beef there, which makes a big difference to me. I can hardly wait to return there."

  • "This was one of the best restaurants I have been to this year - fresh ingredients, outstanding flavors and preparation - excellent service. Pricing a little high, but absolutely work it."

  • "Central Market isn't only for locals. It draws from all over the Bay Area. The farm fresh focussed menu rewards with every dish."

  • "I consider myself a foodie, I've been to many incredible restaurants all over the world and this was unexpectedly one of the best I've ever been to. I've never even written a review prior to this. The food was heaven, the grilled calamari starter and chicken breast for the main complimented each other perfectly. The service was impeccable, from the owner/chef greeting us as we came in, to checking in how we were enjoying the food as we dined, to our waitress being patient and knowledgable with great suggestions. I hope to come back soon, or at least start a campaign to bring this gem back to New York with me."

  • "First time back since Central Market reopened and there just seemed to be something off. The food was as good as usual with the exception of the beet salad that I have had many times before. Too much dressing made it soggy and the beets were in huge chunks that were awkward to eat. The service was good but our experience was also marred by the lack of air conditioning. There didn't seem to be any air circulating and my companion and I mentioned it a couple of times to the waitress but she never apologized or said that she would see if something could be done. This has always been my favorite restaurant in Petaluma so I am hoping it was just an off night."

  • "Our party of 7 enjoyed every last bite of their meals…from the heavenly beet salad and clam chowder starters to the short ribs and grilled scallops, they definitely know what they're doing in the kitchen. Only draw back, the noise level…more than "energetic" as the restaurant filled."

  • "We had a great dining experience, except their booths are very low and uncomfortabe. The seats are all cracked. I suggest they replace with new ones."

  • "A bottle of champagne, shared a dozen oysters, followed by an amazing clam chowder with corn and local organic bacon. I had the waygu steak, which was amazing, my wife had a beautiful pasta dish, with shrimp, perfect fettuccine and saffron base. Wait staff were exceptional, chef came to our table to make sure everything was perfect. Couldn't ask for much more!"

  • "I went with 2 of my lady friends to have dinner....the salads we ordered became our whole meal, they were so delicious and fresh tasting. I ordered the unique carrot salad..never knew there were purple carrots! and my friends both ordered the house salad. I have ever had better bacon pieces in the home grown pork bacon chunks that my friend shared with me. I felt healthy and fresh when I left."

  • "Great experience in the midst of a challenging situation for the restaurant as a water main broke in the street just outside their door. This might have kept the noise inside down due to turning away patrons at the request of the City officials, but it didn't dampen the service or the quality of the meal in the least. It was disappointing that there are no more, and maybe fewer vegetarian and vegan options than at any other restaurant."

  • "Central Market is our favorite place for a nice night out. Always delicious, from the appetizers to the desserts."

  • "You know an establishment is good when it fills up on a Tuesday for dinner. The place was packed by 6:30pm. I suggest reservations at least a couple days ahead of time. Groups larger than 8 may have some difficulty fitting in, call directly so they can accommodate. The food was very good, between all of us we had almost every dish on the menu. Happy hour Oysters were super yummy. All the apps were very good and well priced. The wine list is somewhat limited but the selections that they have are great (try the dry creek Zin). For desert try the strawberry pie or the peach pie very good. They are a bit limited on the vegetarian menu so just ask the Chef to make up something for you. The wait staff is very friendly with speedy service."

  • "We celebrated a birthday with a party of 7 - the round table allowed us all to be a part of the conversation through out dinner. Food is absolutely amazing with flavors that are simply delish! I highly recommend Central Market"

  • "We had a delicious meal at this unusual restaurant. It looks like it used to be a market or something. The ambiance is very casual but the food is serious stuff. There were so many interesting items on the menu that it pays to share so you get to taste more goodies. Memorable dishes were a grilled carrot salad with different varieties of carrots, the chicken bomba and the wood-grilled chicken. Desserts were made in house and were outstanding. The vibe is busy and noisy but fun. "

  • "Fresh, fresh, everything fresh: bread, butter, popping big peas, crispy broccoli, and locally caught salmon - so moist and smooth - and a creamy butter-ladened sauce perfectly spiced with fresh herbs. "

  • "Always come here when we are up in the country. A great little wine list that rotates, both regions, varietals, and countries (besides Sonoma Wines) Cabbage rolls are always delicious, as are all the appetizers that are so seasonal (we hear the Chef has a Farm/Ranch now) Love the Sardines and Mackerel when they are in season Ask for Amy the server, as she is both efficient and well versed in the food and wine She also smiles a lot, and is always refreshingly pleasant"

  • "It's a real pleasure to dine in a restaurant with staff who really know their jobs. Our questions were answered, recommendations were made based on a few questions, food and drink were served fresh and in a timely manner. That sounds simple, but it hasn't been the case at some places recently. Of course the food was fabulous, tasty, interesting and presented in a pleasing fashion. Lots of local, fresh ingredients. And as always, interesting wines to choose from. We'll be back."

  • "We had the best dinner a few nights ago...the menu had so many wonderful things to choose from we had a hard time deciding. The clam/corn chowder was out of this world, the best chowder we've ever had. We also greatly enjoyed the scallops with cauliflower. Cooked perfectly, this pairing was unusual and amazingly good. Dessert was the finishing touch with fresh lemon granita and strawberries. A nice wine list with several wines by the glass...We're already looking forward to the next time!"

  • "The food is creative and well prepared. It is plated beautifully. I had a calamari appetizer in a zinfandel sauce that was absolutely delicious and my husband had an outstanding corn clam chowder, The stuffed chicken meatball over mashed potatoes was wonderful. The apple pie was one of the best we have ever tasted. The only negative and it wasn't that bad was the sound level. We highy recommend Central Market."

  • "We love Central Market. My family treated me to a late Mother's Day dinner. We have a 9 year old granddaughter, and the menu is very limited for that age group. I would strongly recommend adding spaghetti and meat balls as an option for those needing a more simple option for dinner. Other than that, we all were very pleased with our meals (party of 6, including the nine year old)."

  • "I found this restaurant on Petaluma main road when I went into Petaluma to run some errands and picked up one of their cards so I could look up their menu online. And boy and I glad I did. Farm fresh food. High quality. Great warm ambience. Friendly wait staff. I really enjoyed the meal, the space, the people. "

  • "Great space and feeling. Fresh beautiful foodstuffs; the choices this chef makes are always intriguing and then deeply satisfying. There are so many different offerings there's always a surprise or two. There must be four or five different meals or side dishes that I think are the very best I've had anywhere. Great wine list, excellent service from staff who know exactly how fast to move and exactly how attentive to be. It's the perfect place!"

  • "my only complaints would be the amount of overroasted cauliflower peices on the scallops entree. . maybe a little too heavy handed with the salt season as well; the puree, however, was outstanding. The charcuterie plate was delicious, and the house mustard amazing. Salmon was perfectly poached. The favas were a tad starchy, but the brown butter sauce. Also, consider using unsalted butter w/ the bread, please. Overall, very tasty."

  • "A very bad experience with the service and attitude; the head chef/owner was rude and aggressively hostile when one of the dishes was returned due to a mistake by the staff. We waited for over 15 minutes for a simple correction to the dish and all the others in our party had to wait while their food got cold. It went downhill from there. I would never return and recommend that you avoid this place. The food is ok but not great. "

  • "We were in a position to try something new in the town of Petaluma with another couple, as one of our favorite restaurants, Le Bistro (up the street) was closed that night. We chose Central Market and were unfortunately not impressed. The meals (overall) were just O.K. - My wife had the lamb and it was VERY well done (chalk like consistency). We were encouraged by our (great) waitress to send it back (rare for us to do) and things went down hill from there (happens). As you can imagine, we won't be back."
