Diner Reviews
  • "Our dinner at Central Kitchen was quite fun and truly delicious. Everything our party selected for the meal was terrific. We shared all items, and loved comparing notes on our individual reactions to each dish. The dishes themselves were interesting, fresh, inspired and sooooo tasty - without exception. Great time, great staff, great food. Thank you!"

  • "I love Central Kitchen. The menu always has an unusual surprise. This visit, we enjoyed the perfectly seasoned fried green tomatoes and padron peppers the most. The squid a la plancha came with a black olive crust that brought out the briny flavor of the the squid. Our server suggested fantastic wines by the glass. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Surprised to discover simple facade. Surprising when entering. Very spartan interior. Not expected such good food. Way too noisy..."

  • "Fantastic-- All the appetizers, salad, and the Cod ( entree ) were excellent. We tasted 10 out of the 16 dishes ordered."

  • "This was my first tine here and I must say it was amazing. We tried the 'let the restaurant decide' and we were not disappointed. We ended up getting to sample like half the menu and there wasn't one thing we didn't like. Extremely inventive and complex flavor combinations in every bite of every plate. The wait staff worked as a team and was super attentive. Will definitely be back again."

  • "What a great restaurant, the space, the food, wine list , professional attentive, knowledgable service staff, every dish artistically presented, we will return!"

  • "Interesting and delicious. The sewer pipe water feature just inside the door tells you that this is going to be different. The relatively small menu is highly creative. For example, the refreshing cantaloupe and cucumber salad has "compressed fruit" and greens atop a creme fraiche and yogurt panna cotta. The hen roulade entree was moist and, like the fruit in the salad, intensely flavored. From the starter through the dessert, the food was delicious. (At Commonwealth, which also has a very innovative menu, the food was at least as interesting but not as uniformly delicious as at Central Kitchen.) The restaurant has two rooms, side by side, both appealing in a renovated-rustic style. The waitstaff is friendly and professional."

  • "We had a great meal and a wonderful experience. We had the croquettes (delicious), the potatoes (very good), and the pastas (both were amazing, especially the agnolotti (sp?). It was a great experience up to there. Then we had this very long wait for our entrees. During that time, our stomachs realized we weren't hungry and then we just sat waiting. I'm not sure what went wrong with the timing but it was maybe 30 min. before the entrees. My husband had the salmon, I had the pork. Both were very good but just weren't as exciting as the earlier dishes. The waiter was super nice but I like to hear something when there is a big lag. I will go back and am hopeful that was just a minor bump."

  • "Great food. Lovely space: open air dining. Perfect temperature. Attentive staff. Cucumber melon salad was delicious as well as the salmon dish, duck with the side of corn and bean mix, olive oil cake with berries/perfect and the sorbet with fruit and the little treats was yummy. Parking is a challenge but do-able."

  • "Good but not great for the $$$ cost. Beautiful presentation but flavors and textures were sometimes muddled. For example, chick pea fritters tasted like three day old falafel from the corner store. Added minus, they immediately soaked up the sauce on the dish. As a result, sauce and fritters were the same texture and flavor: mush. Similarly, Roasted squid dish was overwhelmed by salt from the chopped olive marinade. And, roasted alliums were dressed up with a lot of oil and some cream foam. But, you could basically do the same on your grill at home, replacing the foam with creme fraiche. Overall, the food was good, but for me, at $65 a person, I expect better than good. Service was incredible friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "The food is as always outstanding! But our waiter abandoned us for 45 minutes and we had to flag down another waiter to check on things. Were told our meal was "being plated" which suggests it was imminent but another 20 minutes went by before we were served. Service is the only thing that keeps this from being an outstanding destination."

  • "Central Kitchen is a small but light and airy space. The food was flavorful, simple and delicious. The service at times could be a bit more professional -- one server continually expected me to pass over my plate to her on the other side of the table -- but we really enjoyed the casual, calm ambience and the beauty and simplicity of the food."

  • "Service was good, but if I am going to pay $20+ for a few pieces of beef filled pasta, the food should be simply amazing. Sadly, it wasn't. Maybe my expectations are too great, but small portions of high priced bland food is very underwhelming. A so-so evening."

  • "Central Kitchen's veggies are always good -- but it's the fish and seafood that really stood out on our most recent visit. The entire table ordered the tasting menu, which we all thought was a good value, and the starter salads were good (standout was a concoction with figs and almond butter), but dinner got better and better with the tender, charred squid, the toothsome chitarra with uni butter, mussels, and bottarga. One diner had halibut while the others had hen roulade. CK managed to incorporate some asian flavors (sesame, ginger) and various places in the menu without being too heavy handed ... creating intriguing flavor combos rather than a new version of something that your chinese grandma does better (looking at you, Betelnut)."

  • "Some of the best food in San Francisco. Creative and balanced dishes, with brave flavors and absolutely topnotch ingredients. The wine was fantastic, a perfect pairing, and the without exception the waitstaff were enthusiastic, professional, knowledgable, and down to earth. It's my second time here, and though it was WAY past the range of what I should spend on dinner I'll be back as soon as I can!"

  • "We had an exquisite meal of pork angloti with brown butter and toasted wild rice and poached halibut with mushrooms and artichokes. Both dishes were beautifully plated with earthy yet sophisticated flavor combinations."

  • "We went for brunch on Father's Day. The food was outstanding! The very best of "contemporary American." Good wine selection. But the service was so poor, unfriendly and aloof that I would hesitate to recommend it. We moved from NYC a year ago and are overall used to more friendly service at these prices. But aside from friendliness, this was outright rude and I don't think characteristic of SF. I would be embarrassed to invite anyone to this place to get this kind of treatment, be it our NYC friends who visit, SF friends, or business associates, even if food is great. I would give more detail but OT imposes a character limit that makes it impossible to give meaningful details of the bad service. E.g.: we got our check while still eating."

  • "I really enjoyed Central Kitchen. We arrived early for our reservation but they were able to find us a table right away and the seating is open and airy and a bit noisy but manageable. You can see the kitchen from parts of the restaurant too, something I always find interesting. The food was quite good. We had a cheese course appetizer, followed by a pasta and a salmon dish. The cheese was excellent, although I think it would have been better at the end of the meal instead of the beginning. The pasta dish had mussels and the taste was super, but the dish was a bit too rich with a lot of oil or butter left on the plate after each serving. The salmon was cooked to perfection and we finished every bite. You can order it cooked as you wish."

  • "I was stunned at how great the food was at this restaurant. It is located in an area that at one time was dangerous. Now, families walk down the street, hipsters and the like. The salad I had was the best I have ever eaten. And it was unusual; presented like a wreath with a broth in the middle. The salmon was outstanding and not like the typical salmon you get at most San Francisco eateries. It had a mushroom broth with the salmon cooked to perfection with a crispy top. It could not have been better. This restaurant is EXCELLENT."

  • "Wonderful dinning experience with the exception that I fund myself questioning the Music being played. Was the level bordering on too loud? Did the choice of music fit the space? Were other dinners also noticing the music? Was I spending too much time focusing on the music instead of the food and the dinning experience? Odviously, I did. My conclusion... The music stold the show! Central Kitchen's food and service although exceptional was unfortunately diluted by the music."

  • "We were in SF for a special holiday weekend and found this restaurant. Central Kitchen had a somewhat limited menu, but the waiter was both knowledgeable and attentive, giving great detail on every ingredient in their delicious food. We tried the pork pate, grilled ramps and mixed greens, short rib stuffed pasta, salmon and dry aged ribeye steak for two. All were delicious, including an unusual mixed green salad that had peas, asparagus and other greens, along with an outstanding vinaigrette and parmesan cheese. Definitely a strong showing, will look forward to trying it again."

  • "I loved my pasta with mussels. Wonderful flavors. However, my boyfriend could not find anything on the menu that really turned him on, with only about 5 items to choose from. He had the salmon, which was excellent, but he had cooked salmon at home the night before. The chocolate custard dessert was excellent, with an artful presentation. We shared the summer vegetable salad, which was interesting, but small for $13. So, as I said before, the food was excellent, but the choices were limited, and the prices were a little high."

  • "Central kitchen was a great all around experience. The service was second to none. the music was right up our alley. good food presentation and innovative successful culinary feats all around. when our second wine tasted a little bit funny (potentially a corked bottle), we received a hefty pour of a zinfandel that was much better. great explanations of all the less common ingredients when asked. I will be back! dont be afraid to ask questions and make requests when eating here! so accommodating. "

  • "The atmposphere is really nice, open and airy with giant skylights that give tons of natural light, and few walls to get in the way. We sat down and we were asked if we wanted water, said yes, and then asked again and one more time. It wasn't clear to us who our waiter even was until 20 minutes later. She was at best aloof. Ordered the short rib and the hen. The rib pasta was delicious, the hen was good. The pickled vegetables as an app we're amazing too. Overall the food was very good, but to be honest I really expect more service when I'm paying that much."

  • "Positives: very nice platings, interesting flavors and menu combinations, and a beautiful atmosphere. Negatives: good but not *delicious* courses (e.g. flavorful but overcooked pork), and being prodded by waitstaff (to the point our dessert menu arrives before the last entree--honest mistake but emblematic of the sloppiness and attitude). It was a fine meal, but the problem is that this place's prices are maybe two to three times the value I'd attach to the experience. In other words, their prices put them in a particular category of restaurant to which their offering doesn't rise (hence my overall rating being relative to restaurants in that category). I don't think I'll be back unless I hear it's very different."

  • "I have been meaning to go to Central Kitchen for a long time and am so glad I finally made it in. Our meals were fantastic. The waitress was attentive, but we never felt rushed. All in all such a wonderful experience in a great neighborhood! I would definitely recommend Central Kitchen. "

  • "The tasting menu was excellent, especially the raw scallops, pork belly and octopus. The wines paired with each dish went well and portions were good. Service was very attentive and friendly. Relatively easy parking in a residential area. I was glad I chose this restaurant to celebrate my close friend's birthday and definitely recommend it!"

  • "$80 brunch for two, with just one drink. Food was fine, but nothing outstanding justifying the price. Miley Cyrus- Wrecking Ball blaring at 11:30am, and our server said it was part of a playlist the owner insisted on despite complaints. I live 4 blocks away from this restaurant, and I'm pretty sure it's designed with suburban brunch tourists in mind. I have no plans to return or recommend."
